Summer Under the Oak Program Guide

Welcome!

We’re committed to a summer filled with fun and adventure for campers of all ages at Norfolk Collegiate’s Summer Under the Oak. Camps are led by Collegiate’s talented teachers and coaches along with friends and experts from the Hampton Roads community.

Each Summer Under the Oak program is outlined and organized by week and division in the pages that follow.

Programs are listed in order by academic, artistic, athletic and adventure camps. Please use the colors below to help navigate to the different types of programs for each week.

CENTER FOR ACADEMICS Keep your mind sharp this summer and knock out your summer reading list, polish your writing skills and expand your knowledge of game coding. Go beyond the classroom and challenge your student in other exciting areas like robotics and science exploration.

CENTER FOR ARTS Hands-on art classes, musical theater and musical instruments take the spotlight in this center with creativity at every turn. With projects ranging from pottery to musical theater camp, you are sure to find something to tap into your creative side this summer.

CENTER FOR ATHLETICS Get outside, run around, try a new sport and brush up on your athletic skills before your competitive season begins. Pack your sunscreen, tennis shoes and gear-up for an active experience.

CENTER FOR ADVENTURE Travel to some of the area’s best nature sites or volunteer around Hampton Roads with your friends. These camps will have you raving about your summer fun under the oaks.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION CLASSROOM COURSES

CHEMISTRY

The Fuhrmann Driving Academy is bringing Driver’s Education to Norfolk Collegiate’s middle and upper school campus. This course is approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles as the classroom portion of Driver’s Education. You do not need to have your permit to take this class. Classes will not be held on the weekends.

This six-week course condenses the yearlong Chemistry course complete with labs, projects and a final exam. This course is for students who have successfully completed Biology and who have permission from the science department chair. Once completed, your student will have earned another credit to add to his or her transcript. Please contact Val Ortiz, associate director of college counseling and academic advising, or Alan Stell, science department chair, for more information. This camp will be located on the middle and upper school campus.

JUNE 15-19 LITTLE SCHOLARS: FUTURE-PRENEURS Are you a natural born leader? Do you want to experience the thrills of creating a ‘company’? Don’t miss out on this camp where you will create and sell handmade products at the Sale-A-Thon. This camp will dabble in the world of stocks and current events as they relate to businesses.

Leader: Little Scholars Rising Grades 6-8 Session 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

OAKS VOLLEYBALL Whether you’re a beginner or want to keep your skills sharp, this camp is designed to teach and reinforce basic volleyball skills for our budding athletes. Campers will learn volleyball fundamentals like positions, basic bump setting, spiking and the proper techniques for serving while working together in a fun environment to promote growth in each athlete. This camp offers one-on-one attention and a small taste of what true competition feels like. There’ll be plenty of opportunity for errors to be made, ultimately aiding in the growth process. This camp will be located on the middle and upper school campus.

ULTIMATE SPORTS Enjoy a week of fun and friendly competitions as campers focus on a different sport—indoor and outdoor—and learn the basic rules and fundamental skills involved for each sport. The importance of good sportsmanship will be stressed as campers participate in friendly competitions throughout the week.

JUNE 22-26 MAD SCIENCE: NASA JOURNEY INTO OUTER SPACE Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space. From the Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends children on a quest for exploration. Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch!

Leader: Mad Science Rising Grades 1-6 Session: 9 a.m.- Noon Cost: $175

SYLVAN: RADICAL ROBOTICS BOYS LACROSSE Boys Lacrosse will provide excellent lacrosse instruction while also improving campers’ skills in a fun environment. Each day is structured so campers receive quality instruction while also having the opportunity to play the game. Campers will learn drills and techniques taught to NCAA-level players in a low camper-to-staff ratio where all ability levels are welcome and encouraged. All of our coaching and teaching is provided by former or current NCAA coaches and players.

During this hands-on, half-day program, campers will invent, investigate and explore the world of robots and simple machines. Campers will investigate the world of science with hands-on exploration of real-world environmental concepts using LEGO. Students will use robotics to become detectives— investigating and answering questions about physics, life cycles, nature conservation and natural disasters.

PLAYFUL POTTERY Campers will explore the possibilities in clay as they work with handbuilding and experiment with textures and other surface applications.

Campers will be introduced to the potter’s wheel, learn beginning techniques and various glazing methods.

All pieces will be fired and glazed. This camp will be located on the middle and upper school campus. (MAX 12 STUDENTS) Leader: Cathy Wright Rising Grades 4-8 Session: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CAMP: SESSION 1 This camp is designed to give students an opportunity to earn volunteer hours for school or for the enjoyment of helping others. Campers will volunteer their time with a variety of organizations each day and make a difference in their community. They’ll receive 20 hours of community service for each week completed.

Campers will need to bring lunch, snacks and drinks each day. This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day.

CODEMOJI: CODERS 3.0 Our mission is simple: teach students to enjoy all things related to coding and the web while building problemsolving and creative-thinking skills. Our staff of professional programmers and educators deliver clear, entertaining instruction to ensure students have fun while learning complex coding skills using popularized emojis that represent HTML text, which lowers the barriers to new coders and increases their excitement and understanding of computer science. Students build animations, websites and video games, explore multiple coding languages, program robots, create STEM-based projects on and offline, and are encouraged to share their projects when they get home.

JULY 6-10 JUMP-START CHINESE Your child will join Ms. Wesi Boyer, former lower school strings teacher, on a journey in her native language of Chinese-Mandarin. Students will learn art, the sound of music and more in Chinese. Students will spend the afternoons learning about chinese food and culture.

FISHING CAMP Campers will create their own fish story as they travel to various area fishing spots and hopefully reel in the big one. They’ll learn how to bait a hook, cast and fish with various baits. Campers will participate in the Virginia State Junior Angler Program where they’ll earn an award certificate after catching and releasing six different species of saltwater fish.

Experienced counselors will provide guidance on fishing techniques and regulations and while demonstrating fish tagging of eligible species in support of state and national conservation programs. Campers will need their own fishing rod and reel, as well as lunch, plenty of water, a bathing suit and sunscreen. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day.

JULY 13-17 MAD SCIENCE: EUREKA Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all—their mind! With a little ingenuity, children will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home, and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said “Invention is 10% inspiration, and 90% perspiration,” this camp is 100% fun!

JULY 20-24 OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CAMP Come one, come all to the nature-based, exploratory adventure that is outdoor adventure camp. This camp will take it back to the basics of summer. Each day will host a wondrous activity including learning about edible plants and common wildlife in Hampton Roads, hikes and nature tours with experts at our local state parks such as First Landing and Sandy Point, a ropes course* and so much more. *Subject to local availability.

JULY 27-31 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDY SKILLS Campers will delve into middle school expectations and learn important study skills, such as time management, organization, note taking, testtaking strategies, how to effectively read textbooks, improved reading comprehension in novel study, memory techniques and a math skill refresher.

This camp is located at the middle and upper school campus.

MAD SCIENCE: CRAZY CHEMWORKS Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! This week of crazy chemistry is packed solid with cool reactions.

Campers put on some goggles and change liquids to solid and back again. They’ll handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes. Campers will also compete in the Slime Olympics!

SYLVAN: BUILDING RADICAL RACE CARS This fun-filled camp is a must have for the race car enthusiast. During Radical Racers class, campers will explore and design five different race cars and discover what makes them move and move fast! They’ll discover how race cars propel in different ways and decide how forces and design affect each car’s movement.

LITTLE SCHOLARS: PAY IT FORWARD Pay It Forward is a unique opportunity for students to learn how to impact the world around them. Our leaders will learn about public speaking, civic involvement and community outreach opportunities with an engaging curriculum to channel their desire to have a positive impact on the world around them.This camp will be located on the middle and upper school campus.

LITTLE SCHOLARS: BUILDERS Calling all inventors, creators, builders and designers.

We’ll create our own designs and make structures using recyclable materials, building blocks and many other interesting items. Skills necessary—none. Skills gained— communication, problem solving, reasoning, developing creativity and teamwork.

LITTLE SCHOLARS: ART SAFARI Grab your binoculars because we’re going on a safari around the world! We’ll visit different countries each day and learn about native animals through literature, games and art. Discover the thrill of the hunt without leaving camp.

FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS Campers will explore a different fine-art medium each day and complete projects using materials such as graphite, acrylic paint, watercolors, oils pastels and printmaking. Campers also will complete at least one make-andtake craft each day.

LITTLE SCHOLARS: MYSTICAL CREATURE ADVENTURES

WRITING HISTORICAL FICTION: TIME TRAVELERS

Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, Greek gods and mystical creatures—did we get your attention? Not only will campers have fun filling their days with discoveries about these legendary creatures, but they’ll also broaden their creative mind and gain critical reasoning skills. This is one adventure they’ll not want to miss!

Time Travelers camp allows children to journey through time as they explore a variety of different eras and places.

Over each session, campers read literature, play games and listen to the music that reflects their daily themed time period or place of travel. Campers use this experience to compose pieces of historical fiction reflective of that era.

We’re looking for the next rock-n-roll star this summer.

We’ll jam out with handmade instruments, learn hip songs and dance the camp away. Your rocking scholars will build his or her social skills, gross motor and fine motor skills.

We will show off our moves at a final performance!

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space. From the Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends children on a quest for exploration. Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch!

SYLVAN: RADICAL ROBOTICS During this hands-on, half-day program, campers will invent, investigate and explore the world of robots and simple machines.

Campers will investigate the world of science with hands-on exploration of real-world environmental concepts using LEGO. Students will use robotics to become detectives— investigating and answering questions about physics, life cycles, nature conservation and natural disasters.

PLAYFUL POTTERY Campers will explore the possibilities in clay as they work with handbuilding and experiment with textures and other surface applications. Campers will be introduced to the potter’s wheel, learn beginning techniques and various glazing methods. All pieces will be fired and glazed.

JULY 6-10 JUMP-START KINDERGARTEN

ROCK- IT SCIENCE: ART LAB Science is a highly concrete subject in which students rarely have the opportunity to be creative. By integrating art projects into science lessons, students will create super cool artwork and learn some super cool science, too!

LITTLE SCHOLARS: HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES & TOES S-T-R-E-T-C-H, wiggle and move! Campers will get their bodies moving through movement, fitness, music and yoga. This camp is for rising Kindergarten students who want to familiarize themselves with a full day school experience.

Campers will work on reading readiness skills through daily hands-on activities, use manipulatives to explore math concepts, use iPads during centers, learn about zoo animals, make creative animal crafts and visit the Virginia Zoo. Most importantly, they will be well prepared for the first day of school.

JUMP-START FIRST GRADE Jump-Start First Grade is a fresh start to a successful year! JUMP-START SECOND GRADE Campers will enhance their skills and confidence under the guidance of a veteran teacher. JUMP-START THIRD GRADE Campers will experience a week filled with activities to practice and review math, reading and study skills in preparation for the transition to third grade. JUMP- START CHINESE Your child will join Ms. Wesi Boyer, former lower school strings teacher, on a journey in her native language of Chinese-Mandarin. Students will learn art, the sound of music and more in Chinese. Students will spend the afternoons learning about chinese food and culture.

FISHING CAMP Campers will create their own fish story as they travel to various area fishing spots and hopefully reel in the big one.

They’ll learn how to bait a hook, cast and fish with various baits. Campers will participate in the Virginia State Junior Angler Program where they’ll earn an award certificate after catching and releasing six different species of saltwater fish. Experienced counselors will provide guidance on fishing techniques and regulations and while demonstrating fish tagging of eligible species in support of state and national conservation programs. Campers will need their own fishing rod and reel, as well as lunch, plenty of water, a bathing suit and sunscreen. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. This camp will leave from the lower school on Tidewater Drive each day.

MAD SCIENCE: EUREKA Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all—their mind! LITTLE SCHOLARS: SUPER SLEUTHS Get out your magnifying glasses and detective hat as we have clues to decipher and crimes to solve. While experimenting with simple detection techniques, your reasoning skills will grow and your problem solving skills will become better than CSI agents.

Pay It Forward is a unique opportunity for students to learn how to impact the world around them. CHAMPIONSHIP CHESS CLUB Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build your child’s chess skills while playing and learning through instruction.

SOCCER SHOTS Soccer Shots is a uniquely designed program that will introduce soccer to your child in a fun, safe and controlled environment.

Soccer Shots is a national leader in youth soccer development with the innovative lesson plans tailored to the distinct age-group. No soccer gear is needed, as all equipment is provided by the program leaders.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CAMP Come one, come all to the nature-based, exploratory adventure that is outdoor adventure camp. This camp will take it back to the basics of summer. MAD SCIENCE: CRAZY CHEMWORKS Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! This week of crazy chemistry is packed solid with cool reactions.

Campers put on some goggles and change liquids to solid and back again. They’ll handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes. Campers will also compete in the Slime Olympics!

SYLVAN: BUILDING RADICAL RACE CARS This fun-filled camp is a must have for the race car enthusiast. SUMMER STRINGS Let the wisdom and expertise of Wesi Boyer lead her to a love of music. Students will learn how to play their instrument and read music simultaneously under Boyer’s guidance. She also will assist with helping students find instruments to rent or buy, as needed. Boyer has been teaching violin, viola and cello for beginning and advanced students at Norfolk Collegiate for more than 10 years, is a retired violinist with the Virginia Symphony and is a member of Suzuki Teachers’ Association of Hampton Roads.

THE GREAT COLLEGIATE COOKING CAMP Spread the joy through tasty treats! TEA WITH ME: MANNERS & ETIQUETTE Calling all little ladies and gentlemen! Going beyond “please” and “thank you,” our new etiquette, manners and social grace camp will help refine your young prince or princess, teaching him or her to feel confident in any social situation. We’ll learn and put into practice table manners and how to set a table, etiquette for proper introductions and making a good first impression, conversational etiquette with elders and peers alike, telephone manners, and manners outside the home including sportsmanship and spectatorship, courtesy at public places, dealing with bullies and more. Students will practice their newly learned etiquette in a fun, magical environment where role playing, props, and hands-on activities and crafts give way to chivalrous knights and sophisticated young ladies. At the core of this class is the understanding that at the root of good manners are the development of interpersonal skills including kindness, humility and empathy—paying attention to what others need and may be feeling. Camp will culminate with a tea party where children can dress up and put into use all they’ve learned.

CAMP HOURS | Most programs are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with a supervised lunch and recess. Please refer to camp descriptions carefully as we do offer some half-day camps. Extended care is from 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.

Parents are required to sign their children out each day.

REGISTRATION | Applications may be completed online at NorfolkCollegiate.org/SummerPrograms. Completed applications and fees are due ONE WEEK BEFORE the start of each session.

REQUIRED FORMS AND IDENTIFICATION | In accordance with the Virginia State Law and the Virginia Department of Social Services, Norfolk Collegiate School requires the following information from each registered participant: A copy of the student’s Virginia Health Form (You can obtain a copy from your school. Current Norfolk Collegiate students will already have one on file.)

Identification verification through a copy of the participant’s birth certificate, passport, child military ID, OR proof of enrollment at a Virginia school (example: copy of a report card) CONFIRMATIONS | Your child will not be confirmed in a camp until all of the following documents have been received by the summer programs office: online registration and payment, Virginia Health Form and Identification verification document.

Parents will receive a confirmation email after registration is complete. Parents will also receive a detailed informational email regarding specifics of the program one week before the start of registered programs.

REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS | Refunds must be requested two weeks before the start of the requested camp.

Twenty percent of the total fee is non-refundable. No refund will be given if a camper is dismissed due to disciplinary action. Norfolk Collegiate Summer Programs reserve the right to cancel any camp due to low enrollment. Participants will be notified of cancelled camps at least two weeks before the start of the camp. Fees for canceled camps will be refunded or may be applied to another camp.

NORFOLK COLLEGIATE’S EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM | Morning and Afternoon Care is a place for your child to get pumped up in the morning for the day’s activities, and to wind down after a full day of fun and excitement. Morning care is held in the Lower School Cafeteria; students will be dropped off at our side entrance. Each camper will be escorted by their camp leader to their designated camp when it begins and back to extended care when it ends. An afternoon snack will be provided to campers enrolled in Afternoon Care. The hours of extended day care are 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., and the fee is $30 per week for morning care and $90 per week for afternoon care. This fee will not be prorated. *There will not be extended care services provided for camps at the Granby Street campus.

FIELD TRIPS | Some camps include field trips in the local area.

Transportation for these trips is provided by school buses with certified drivers. Norfolk Collegiate School Summer Program teachers accompany campers on all field trips. Your registration form includes blanket field trip permission; however, you will be notified of specific field trips before they occur.

EMERGENCY/MEDICAL INFORMATION | Please provide detailed information for your child in the medical and emergency contact section of the application. If your child does not attend Norfolk Collegiate, we must have a copy on file of their Virginia Health Form, which includes an immunization record and recent physical. If medication must be given to your child during camp hours (including EpiPens® and medication related to asthma), a separate form for medication administration and authorization must be completed by the parent/guardian and child’s physician. All medication must be dropped off in the Summer Program’s Office by the parent/ guardian.

LUNCH AND SNACK | Students MUST bring their OWN lunch in a labeled bag or lunch box each day. Students may also bring additional morning and afternoon snacks and drinks.

Refrigeration will not be provided for student lunches. Please make sure your lunch is labeled. Students registered for a morning and an afternoon camp will be supervised in groups from 12-12:30 p.m. for lunch and recess free of charge.

T-SHIRTS | Each participant will receive one camp T-shirt with his/her paid registration. Please be sure to include the participant’s shirt size on the application.

CLOTHING AND PERSONAL ITEMS | All clothing, equipment, electronic devices and other personal items should be labeled with your child’s name. Norfolk Collegiate will not be responsible for any lost items.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES | Campers will be allowed to use electronic devices when permitted and supervised by the program teacher and the device is being used for instruction purposes. All devices must be kept in personal book bags during lunch, recess and extended care hours.

STAFF | Staff members have been selected to ensure that all students have a safe and enriching summer experience. Each program has been created by a qualified coordinator who will lead the day-to-day activities. Additional assistance may be provided by camp counselors and high school volunteers.
