AUG. 2017 A MIGHTY OAK IS PLANTED Kate S. Jennings, left, and Margaret Grigg Moore, right, converted a Cape Cod bungalow to provide a nursery school and kindergarten in Norfolk’s quickly growing Wards Corner. Known as Carolton Oaks School, the women welcomed 17 students on March 1, 1948. To honor their dreams and celebrate 7 decades of growth, we are sharing highlights of the last 25,550 school days through this calendar.

SEPT. 2017 AN UNLIKELY SCHOOL TAKES SHAPE The original school building was a residence-turned bakery located at 7822 Granby Street at the corner of Carrollton Court and Granby Street. Founders Jennings and Moore, pictured with early teachers and administrators, derived the school’s name, Carolton Oaks School, from an adaptation of the location of the school and the oaks surrounding the home. By 1950, the school had added a wing with seven classrooms to accommodate its growing student body.

OCT. 2017 ANOTHER EXPANSION TAKES ROOT In 1951, a brick house at 7324 Granby Street was leased and the adjacent property at 7336 Granby Street was purchased. In just seven short years, the school had outgrown the original house. In 1951, construction of an $80,000 facility began at the newly purchased site. In 1952, the south wing of the school was built and in 1954, the north wing was completed. On April 16, 1954, the campus was officially moved to 7336 Granby Street.

NOV. 2017 NEW FACILITY OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR OAKS The new building was one story and boasted 27 classrooms, including spaces for ballet, music and art. As the 1950s drew to a close, the school had nearly 450 students enrolled, with about 320 in grades one to eight and the remainder in the school’s kindergarten and pre-primary school. There were 34 faculty and administrators on staff. DID YOU KNOW? The pine tree shown in the photo was originally planted in 1951-52 as Moore and Jennings developed the property. It still stands in the Harris Courtyard,

EXPANDING STUDENT BODY CALLS FOR CONSTRUCTION The next 10 years included additions and improvements to meet the school’s expanding student population. In 1956, the brick house was purchased and remodeled. Classrooms and a hall connecting the main building and brick house were constructed. In 1957, a dining room was added, and the following year a gym, seen above, was built. In 1969 and 1970, classrooms were constructed on the other side of hall. DID YOU KNOW? The wood floor in the pictured gym, now known as the Watt-Baker Gymnasium, is orignial.

A LOWER SCHOOL WAS BORN In 1973, Carolton Oaks School was renamed Norfolk Collegiate School. Newly renamed, Collegiate purchased 9.5 acres previously occupied by Arrowood Academy, an elementary school at 5429 Tidewater Drive. MAY 2018 A SYMBOL IS RAISED On April 15, 2004, the Sue Faulkner Scribner Clock and Bell Tower was dedicated at the Granby Street campus. The tower was made possible by a bequest from Mr. A. Kenneth Scribner Jr., pictured inset on left with his wife Sue. The bell tower is a symbol of the pursuit of excellence in education. The four cast bronze bells feature the distinctive Westminster chime, which dates to the 18th century.
