“Community service is a way to live out the idea of being Ambassadors for Christ. We can represent the way Christ cares for people by spending time helping organizations in and around Norfolk Christian and giving back to those in need,” says Cheryl Huggins, a science teacher in the Middle School. Every year our students are afforded the opportunity to give back to the community we live in. From monthly trips to work on the grounds of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, to reading to kindergartners and tutoring after school right next door at Suburban Park Elementary, NCS students grades 6 thru 12 complete a minimum of 20 hours of service every year. Concerned for their neighbors in need, three Norfolk Lower school students led an effort to Stomp Out Hunger in Hampton Roads and successfully raised over 1,000 pounds of food and $350 for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

Securing the Future for NCS

This Classic Event Is All About the Teachers

The Norfolk Christian of today exists because past champions of Christian education invested in their school for the good of future generations. Our Barnabas Foundation membership was initiated in 2011 for those who want the Ambassador mission to continue and thrive. Barnabas provides personal, confidential and professional financial stewardship resources from a unique Biblical stewardship approach of planned giving.

The John Elder Classic Annual Golf Tournament is all about honoring our Norfolk Christian teachers. It starts with the event’s namesake, John Elder, a teaching fixture in fifth grade for 38 years before his retirement in 2009. It ends with the proceeds going to equip the teachers through the Annual Fund and Worthy Servants Fund. SINCE 2009

Some examples of planned giving: • How to leave NCS a gift in your will. • Donating an asset to NCS (house, business, jewelry or commodity). • Making a gift to NCS that also provides you an income stream. • Gifting appreciated stock to NCS that also provides you with a tax benefit. • Utilizing an IRA to make a charitable gift. • Considering what the Bible says about leaving behind money for your family and charities.

Honorary Scholarships Add to Endowment Fund

Annual Report - 2015

In 2012 results from an extensive survey of NCS parents, alums and past parents revealed a clear desire to grow the school’s modest endowment fund. Adding $1.2 million to the endowment was a resulting goal of the Honor the Past . . . Secure the Future Capital Campaign. To date $90,665 has been received towards this goal, with $150,000 of this amount coming from honorary endowed scholarships. These scholarships are donor established funds to provide students with annual financial aid awards for either NCS or college tuition. Equally important is the desire to boost a young person’s passion in a particular area of study. Norfolk Christian gift policy encourages donors to establish such funds with guidelines that match the donor’s heart for giving with the school’s mission of preparing Ambassadors for Christ.

The Grace Mutzabaugh Scholarship and Endowment Fund Grace Mutzabaugh served as a teacher and later as Principal of the Norfolk Christian Lower School in the formative years of the school’s history and embodied the founding mission to prepare students as ambassadors for Christ. In 2013 one of Miss Mutzabaugh’s former students established an endowed financial aid scholarship towards Norfolk Christian tuition to honor Grace Mutzabaugh. Each year the financial award encourages a rising senior student who plans to pursue a post-secondary education in teaching with the student also performing a one semester internship at one of the Norfolk Christian lower schools. Scholarship administered by Norfolk Christian 2015 Awardee: Jamie Fox

The Barb Thierry Scholarship and Endowment Fund Barb Thierry served as both teacher and principal in her 42 years at Norfolk Christian, serving a few years at our Beach Campus and most of her career at the Norfolk Lower School. Barb embraced the school’s founding spirit and mission as seen by her lifelong dedication to creating young Ambassadors for Christ and her ongoing participation in NCS activities. In 2014, an endowed scholarship was established in the name of Barb Thierry by a former student to honor Miss Thierry’s legacy by encouraging a rising senior student in their pursuit of Christian ministry and/or ongoing education at a Christian college or university. The award provides financial aid towards Norfolk Christian tuition. Scholarship administered by Norfolk Christian 2015 Awardee: Kendall Turner

The Virginia Mae Midkiff Scholarship Virginia Mae Midkiff served as a teacher of business education courses at Norfolk Christian High School in the 1960s. She embraced Christian education and high academic achievement and embodied Matthew 5:16: “. . . Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” She prayed daily that anyone, from students to strangers, who encountered her would see Jesus in her life. In 2014, an annual college scholarship was established in memory of Virginia Mae Midkiff by her daughter and alumna, Carolyn Midkiff Strahl ‘69. Scholarship administered by Norfolk Christian 2015 Awardee: Rachael Posch

MAKE IT HAPPEN Be part of Norfolk Christian’s most exciting outdoor athletic project ever! Give our student athletes the pride of having a HOME FIELD to call their own.

“There will be so much pride when we can step out of the gym onto our own field right here at home. It’s just not the same taking the field in places where you have no connection, and not only for the players. This is going to fire up our whole Ambassador community for outdoor sports and I can’t wait to be part of that.” — Charlie Fox Junior Class, Soccer and Lacrosse
