We empower eco-conscious businesses and consumers with sustainable alternatives, helping them make more environmentally responsible choices. Our products are designed to align with the SUPD and the new PPWR requirements, reinforcing our commitment to both sustainability and circular economy principles.

key features

sustainability & environmental responsibility

The Ocean Straw is an ocean-friendly, premium reusable drinking straw made in Barcelona, Spain. It is designed to fit into a circular economy. Reducing, reusing and recycling are key methods for circularity and saving the natural resources, ensuring that our actions today don't compromise the future.

PREMIUM QUALITY

Unique look and feel. Beautiful, natural appearance thanks to its unique raw material.

OUTSTANDING USABILITY

Maintain its shape and does not dissolve in liquid like paper straws. Designed for multiple uses - Can be washed in the dishwasher up to 10 times at 60°C.

WOOD & PLANT-BASED

Material’s main components are natural wood dust from industrial side streams and sustainably sourced bio-polymers originating from plants. No trees are cut to produce the material, but side products from the wood industry are used.

SAFE BY DESIGN - NO PFAs

Safe for both people and the planet. No PFAs coating - No glue that can break down into microplastics..

NO PERMANENT MICROPLASTICS

Does not accumulate in nature but circulates back to natural components (CO2, water and biomass) without leaving behind permanent microplastics or toxic residues (biodegradability of the material tested in a simulated marine environment with natural seawater: 75.5% relative biodegradation in 420 days).

COMPOSTABILITY

Compostable (EU standard EN 13432). Can be disposed of in existing organic waste bins for recycling in composting facilities.

LOWER CARBON FOOTPRINT

Straw's material made from renewable resources, facilitating the transition away from fossil-based materials. Fossil-based carbon is replaced by biogenic carbon, which is essential for maintaining the natural carbon cycle. This ensures that the carbon released during biodegradation remains part of the current cycle, rather than adding to long-term carbon emissions.

PRODUCTION

Produced in Spain using extrusion processing, a highly efficient manufacturing method that minimizes material waste. Existing plastic extrusion machinery is used, eliminating the need for new equipment investments and reducing environmental impact through the repurposing of existing machinery.

SUPD and PPWR

SUPD-compliant. Aligns with the PPWR requirements to reduce waste, promote reusability, recyclability, and support circular economy principles.

While our products biodegrade completely in natural conditions, we encourage responsible disposal - they should never be disposed of in nature. Keep our planet clean!

we collaborate with the best

Our straws are made from a patented granulate pulp developed in Finland by a pioneering company certified ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The granules are expertly processed and transformed into straws at our Spanish manufacturing partner's facility, renowned for its unique expertise in extrusion processing.

By leveraging the strengths of both partners, we produce high-quality, sustainable drinking straws that stand out in the market. This collaboration ensures that our products not only meet rigorous environmental standards but also deliver exceptional performance and durability.

innovative raw material

● Sustainable wood and plant-based material from Finland - Main components are responsibly sourced biodegradable bio-polymers originating from plants and natural wood dust from industrial side streams (no trees are cut to produce the material, but side products from the wood industry are used).

● Developed as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics like PP or PS, and to replace PLA due to its faster biodegradation.

● Complies with EU and FDA food contact requirements.

● Biodegradability: Material certified as industrially compostable EN 13432) (biodegrades without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other harmful residues).

● Does not accumulate in nature but circulates back to natural components (CO2, water and biomass) without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other harmful residues (75,5% relative biodegradation in 420 days - test ASTM D6691 in simulated marine environment using natural sea water).

● Does not contain PFAs or common food allergens.

ocean friendly

Researchers estimate that 8 million tons of plastics are added to the ocean every year. While half of the plastic that is produced is single-use, these items make up 89% of ocean plastic. Studies are projecting that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the sea than fish.

With The Ocean Straw, we aim to contribute to saving our oceans, reducing waste, and preventing the accumulation of microplastics which persist in the environment indefinitely and pose serious risks to ecosystems and human health.

material testing

The biodegradability, ecotoxicity and threshold values for heavy metals of the material have been tested by an independent laboratory (ISO/IEC 17025 certified).

laboratory testing

Test done into natural sea water, monitoring the production of CO2 (ASTM 6691). Based on these observations, the time for complete biodegradation has been estimated.

natural environment

Test done in the open water of the Baltic Sea, measuring the weight loss.

ecotoxicity testing

Test for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): no PFAS, were detected. Not considered harmful to plankton in the marine ecosystem (analysed in the Daphnia magna plankton toxicity test according to OPPTS 850.1010 & OECD 202).

end of life & recycling

The Ocean Straw is compostable according to EU standard EN 13432: This means that at the end of its life-cycle, it can be disposed of in existing organic-waste bins for organic recycling. The resulting nutrient-rich compost can be used in agriculture to improve soil quality.

lower carbon footprint

The straw’s raw material is made from renewable resources, facilitating the transition away from fossil-based materials. The fossil-based carbon is replaced with biogenic carbon. This substitution is essential for maintaining the balance of the natural carbon cycle.

Additionally, the straws are produced using extrusion processing, a highly efficient manufacturing method that minimizes material waste. Existing plastic extrusion machinery is used, eliminating the need for new equipment investments and reducing environmental impact through the repurposing of existing machinery.

Comparison with other alternatives

PLA straws

bagasse straws

Mostly produced in China, with a risk of child labor. PLA is not resistant to hot temperatures. Its production involves a great amount of chemical processing needed to turn starch into bioplastic (sulphur dioxide is used). PFAs may be used for coating and PLA can take up to 30 years to biodegrade. May alter taste.

Made from sugarcane fibers and mostly produced in China. Production may involve the addition of PFAs, or other chemical substances for coating. Typically single-use and less durable. They may soften or break down if left in liquid for an extended period. May alter taste.

bamboo straws

wheat straws

Bamboo is also mainly sourced from China. The process of turning bamboo into bamboo fiber may involve the use of chemicals and a significant amount of water, making it less sustainable than it appears.

Not strong or suitable for long-term use, especially with hot or acidic drinks. May not be the most suitable choice for people with wheat allergy. Can absorb moisture and alter taste.

grass straws

avocado straws

agave straws

rice straws

Not strong or suitable for long-term use - Single-use and not suitable for hot drinks.

Can be expensive to produce and buy.

Their production often involves the addition of PLAs, or other chemical substances for coating.

Can only last for up to an hour in cold drinks. Not suitable for hot drinks.
