I couldn’t believe something that I discovered years ago while reading through old archive books of fashion and interior prints. The very first Copperplate-printed toiles were made in DUBLIN (Ireland) in 1752. For a country that hasn’t donated much to the world of aesthetics (music, poetry, dance and drink are another story altogether) I was so excited to discover this tidbit.

Toiles were single colour prints showing romantic and pastoral scenes.

The look rapidly grew very popular and both Benjamin Franklin and George Washington imported toiles for use in their homes. Thirty years later the French saw and mastered the technique and the most famous village where the industry boomed was Jouy, near Versailles. Hence Toile de Jouy,.
