Pittsburg State University Kelce College of Business Renovation and Expansion | Gabrielle Foster and Norah Swift Harrington | Arch 609 | Spring 2019

This project proposed a change to the existing school currently housed in a 1950’s high school. The building struggles with study space, adequate teaching classrooms and low ceilings. Posed with renovating the existing building and adding a new wing, 50% of the existing building was demolished. A innovation hub was added to connect the two buildings. Surrounding the hub with classrooms on the first floor, and offices located on the second and collaboration space throughout the building. The proposal created student centered learning and collaboration space.

Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania 1881- Founded as the first business school in the United States. Meant to train future leaders to conduct corporations and public organizations in a rapidly evolving industrial era.

1921- Industrial Research Unit was established and MBA degrees were awarded.

Early on- Faculty were tightly connected to group of businessmen, bankers and lawyers in the School of Political Economy. Curriculum included social science and law courses.

2014- Student Life Space was opened.

Space with additional conference rooms, meeting rooms, study rooms, and serves as a incubator space for startup companies.

1942- During WWII, full-time faculty dropped from 165 to 39 due to being called for special posts.

1972- Vance Hall was constructed 1946- The first multidisciplinary program was created with the for the graduate programs, School of Engineering and admin offices, lecture halls, and Applied Sciences. meeting areas.

1983- Steinberg Hall-Dietrich Hall expanded to house more offices, lecture halls, conference rooms, and common areas.

1959- Adopted changes to curriculum that taught liberal arts education for almost half of the degree program.

Haas School, University of California Berkeley 1898- Founded as the first business school in the United States. Liberal arts education was the core of the business education, drawing professors from other disciplines.

Courses included legal, political, and historical studies.

After WWI and through the Great Depression- Enrollment increased from 3 students in 1898 to 1,540 students in 1938.

1915- Changes were made to the curriculum to have a more professional focus. After WWI, the program adopted a two year liberal arts education and two year commerce study.

2008 - 2017- Curriculum overhaul and a $300 million capital campaign were launched to transform the building and curriculum on the School’s approach to leadership and research.

Opened fourth building, Connie & Kevin Chou Hall.

1942- New two year track for business administration was offered and the college was renamed to Department of Business Administration.

1980- Began to offer a joint program with the College of Engineering called Management of Technology.

1991- Berkeley-Haas Entrepreneurship Program was founded.

1941 - 1945- Several research centers opened in the school focusing on economics, labor and employment, and real estate.

1955- The Graduate School opened and a year later a doctorate program was offered.

1972 - 1976- An evening MBA program was initiated. A career planning and placement center were to be implemented thru donations.

UTM Innovation Centre

Moriyama & Teshima Architects | Mississauga, ON, Canada | 2014 The new Innovation Complex serves as the new gateway to the University of Toronto Mississauga campus. It also serves as incubator for partnership and collaboration where all users can take part in academic, administrative, and social activities. The heart of the building, or the Rotunda, is the perfect example of a space for these activities.

Student Center at Georgetown University ikon.5 architects | Washington DC, USA | 2014 The New South Student Center is a renovation and addition located along Georgetown’s campus corridor re imagined in the new master plan. This ‘living room’ gives students a sense of identity and comfort. There are areas for collaboration off of the Great Room, individual study spaces, cafe, and gallery to help foster an environment of creativity and enthusiasm.

UW Foster School of Business PACCAR Hall lmn Architects | Seattle, Washington| 2010 The core concept of PACCAR Hall is integrated communities: social, natural, and campus context. The central atrium serves as the heart of the building where many community activities are held. This design required a new construction (PACCAR) to connect to a renovation project. Its forward thinking approach to design allows the building to grow as business education does. Flexible common spaces, multiple entry sequences, ‘convergence zones’, developing technology capabilities are just some of the ways its doing this.

Right now the proposed masterplan walk from the east side of campus ends at the oval on the north east entrance. Our proposal extends the masterplan walk all the way down Cleveland. Creating a paved pedestrian only pathway until Broadway Street and extending towards downtown.

We first looked at the spirit of entrepreneur and compared that to a mountaineer. Where the end goal is clear and there are multiple different ways to get there. Comparing that to a maze with the end located in the center, then simplifying it down and leaving our innovation hub in the center with the north to south walls acting as a way finding mechanism and relating to the spirit of an entrepreneur.

We demolished all of the first floor only spaces with the exception of the band room, leaving about 50% of the building remaining for renovation.

The first floor is mainly catered to students with the classrooms, advising and outreach centers. Collaboration space is spread throughout the floor and the innovation hub acting as the heart of the building and main collaboration space.
