RE GIS T E RIN G TO BID
New clients must register online to bid (whether in person or in absentia). This can be done via our website www.noonans.co.uk Registrations will be subject to due diligence and Noonans reserves the right to cancel registrations. Once registered, any client bidding for the first time online will need to enter their card details so that a security check can be performed to authorise you to bid (www.noonans.co.uk >Your Account > Account Authorisation). This check is secure, your card details are not seen by us and no funds will be deducted. BIDDING P RIORITY
Please note that we prioritise executing commission bids as early as possible in order to secure the lot for you at the cheapest possible price. It is therefore entirely possible that a lot can sell at your top bid to another bidder. To avoid this happening we offer an optional ‘Plus 1’ bidding increment facility, whereby if the bidding is against you at your maximum bid the auctioneer will execute one further bid on your behalf. Please note that in the event of identical top bids priority is given to the first bid received. P L ACIN G B IDS
LIVE BIDDING VIA WWW.NOONANS.CO.UK You may bid in real time from your computer or mobile device. We provide an optional live video and audio feed of the auctioneer, allowing you to participate in much the same way as attending the auction. You may see your invoice and pay online directly after you’ve finished bidding. There is no additional charge for this facility.
ADVANCE BIDDING VIA WWW.NOONANS.CO.UK We strongly advise this method if you wish to leave bids in advance as it is the easiest, most accurate and flexible way to leave your bids and gives you total control over them right up to the point that the lot is offered for sale. Bids made online cannot be seen by others and only become live at the point the lot is being sold. Up until this time your bids can be easily altered or cancelled. An automated email is sent to confirm any changes made. There is no additional charge for online bidding. ADVANCE BIDDING VIA POST, EMAIL OR TELEPHONE Whilst we are still happy to execute all bids submitted to us using post, email or telephone, it should be noted that all bids left with us in these ways will be entered at our offices using exactly the same bidding facility to which all our clients have access. There is, therefore, no better way of ensuring the accuracy of your advance bids than to place them yourself online. If you are registered with Noonans you may bid by email to bids@noonans.co.uk or by telephone to 020 7016 1700. All bids placed by email or telephone must be received before 4 PM on the day preceding the sale. A bidding form is included in the back of this catalogue. If you wish to use this please fill it in carefully, to include all relevant information. Please ensure that you post this form so that it arrives, at the latest, the day before the sale. BIDDING IN THE AUCTION ROOM You are very welcome to attend the auction and bid in person if you are registered with Noonans.
Please note that the auction room is situated on the third floor of a Georgian building which doesn’t have a lift. You may pay for and collect your lots during the auction.

Iron Age Coins from Various Properties
511 CORIELTAUVI, Uninscribed issues, gold Quarter-Stater, Lindsey Scyphate S-type, highly stylised boar, represented by mass of lines and dashes, rev. large S shape surrounded by pellets, 1.38g (ABC 1773; BMC 3189-92; VA –; S 395). 512 EAST WILTSHIRE, Uninscribed issues, gold Quarter-Stater, similar to Savernake Wheel type, wreath, crescents below, pelleted spike, rev. horse right, singular tail, solar motif below in the form of a ring surrounded by pellets within a larger ring, clockwise solar spiral above, 1.19g/3h (cf. ABC 2101; cf. VA 246-1; cf. BMC 546; cf. S 48). Struck on a an of light yellowish gold, well-centred and good very ne, extremely rare and struck from unrecorded dies £2,600-£3,000 Provenance: Featured in The Searcher Magazine no. 492, August 2026, p. 12 We have here a new variant of the already excessively rare Savernake Quarter-stater. The wheel usually found beneath the horse has been replaced by a solar motif, while the spiral above rotates clockwise rather than anticlockwise. The horse, moreover, has a single tail, and the small ring ornaments normally scattered through the !eld are absent. In these respects the coin bears a close resemblance to the Peters!eld Wreath Face type of the Belgae (ABC 773). Nevertheless, its attribution to the Savernake series is secure: the form of the wreath on the obverse, the solar spiral above the horse and, most decisively, the horse’s mane—composed of pellets rather than rendered in the ladder-like form characteristic of ABC 773—all point to the Savernake types.
513 NORTH EAST THAMES, Uninscribed issues, silver Unit, Essex Serpent type, annulate horse right, single fore and rear legs, head turned back to face a curled serpent above, rev. small annulate horse left, corn ear motif below, serpent-like object above and behind, 1.31g/3h (ABC 2276; BMC –; VA –; S –). Well-struck and dened with an even grey tone, excessively rare and extremely ne £2,400-£3,000 Of this type, only three examples are listed on the Celtic Coin Index (02.0159, 96.3471 and 00.1656) and one example is recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (BH-CB5A59). This coin is the !nest of these examples.

The chronological composition of the hoard suggested that it had lain undisturbed for almost exactly 1,000 years, having been deposited perhaps during disturbances in the city which culminated in the murder of Pope John X in May 928.
Danelaw
527 Cnut of Northumbria, Penny, struck at York, CNVT REX around patriarchal cross, secondary cross with pellet in each angle, rev. + MIRABILIA FC around small cross, pellets in !rst and fourth quarters, 1.44g/3h (Lyon/Stewart MF.-1/CR-G; SCBI Glasgow 497, same dies; N 511; S 998). Good extremely ne, probably much as struck and with attractive golden-grey toning £700-£900 Provenance: The Hockwold Collection
A New Viking Variant 528 Penny, after the Two Line type of Alfred the Great, struck at an uncertain location in the Eastern/Middle Danelaw by the moneyer Landbeorht, EL FR ED REX around small cross, rev. LEDBE RT MO in two lines divided by two ringed #oral motifs, cross and four pellets above and below, 1.32g/6h (EMC –; N 475/1 var.; S 966 var.). Some unobtrusive edge loss, otherwise very ne and extremely rare, representing both a new moneyer and a new decorative variant within the early Viking coinage £1,500-£2,000 Provenance: Found in Cambridgeshire in the 1990s Presented here for sale is a late ninth-century penny naming the West Saxon king Alfred on the obverse, but probably produced outside Alfred’s area of control. The moneyer responsible for its production is named on the coins as Ledbert, which we might reasonably normalise to Landbeorht. Under Edward the Elder, a certain Londbriht is named on coins of a style associated with Winchester; towards the middle of the century, a Londberht was operating in the Midlands during the reign of Eadred; while later still, a Landbriht is found working at Southampton in Edgar’s Reform type. The present coin therefore represents the earliest known appearance of this name-form in the English series. None of this, of course, establishes where the present coin was struck. For that, we must turn to other criteria. At 1.32g, its weight is lower than might be expected of an official product of an English-held mint, even allowing for the small amount of edge loss. The reverse ornamentation points in the same direction: towards production within the Danelaw. Regular West Saxon coins of Alfred are generally restrained in appearance, prioritising consistency of design over decorative elaboration. The #oral rings appearing on the reverse of the present coin are therefore highly unusual. Their closest parallels occur on certain Viking issues of the later ninth century, including the Orsnaforda imitations, on which the letter Os are occasionally decorated with radial pellets. And !nally we have the !ndspot, in the Danelaw. In this context, it is perhaps signi!cant that the moneyer’s name, Ledbert, has a distinctly continental #avour—compare, for example, the nearcontemporary Liutbert, Archbishop of Mainz. It has long been recognised that many of the moneyers operating in Viking-occupied East Anglia bore names of continental Germanic origin, a pattern particularly apparent in the St Edmund Memorial coinage. As Naismith notes, ‘These continental Germanic names may have belonged to craftsmen from Francia whom Vikings forced or encouraged to migrate to England.’

Very fine, a trifle crimped, the flan slightly irregular, an extremely rare variety, this perhaps being the only known specimen £3,000-£3,600 Provenance: H.W. Morrieson Collection, Sotheby Auction, 20-4 November 1933, lot 332 [pl. IV]; R.C. Lockett Collection, Part II, Glendining Auction, 11-17 October 1956, lot 2012d; bt Seaby In the Morrieson sale of 1933 the current coin was bought by Lockett for the princely sum of £14 (for reference, a beautiful pattern Shilling of Elizabeth I, mm. key, in same sale fetched only £10). When the Lockett collection was ! nally dispersed in the 1950s the same coin was then cast into a large group lot, alongside thirteen other sixpences, with no mention at all of its distinguishing features. One wonders what Fred Baldwin was thinking, and can but recall Herbert Schneider’s remark that ‘the Old Boy had too much gin in when he started this one’.

Struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise very fine, rare £1,500-£1,800 Provenance: Found in the grounds of Hazelbury Manor near Box (Wiltshire) in 2020 (WILT-0CB2A3); The Hazelbury Civil War Hoard of English Gold Coins, Noonans Auction 271, 4-5 April 2023, lot 6 The present coin formed part of the Hazelbury Manor Hoard, a group of fourteen English gold coins of James I and Charles I discovered in the grounds of Hazelbury Manor, near Box in Wiltshire, in August 2020 (PAS WILT-0CB2A3) and sold through these rooms in April 2023. Found tightly clustered at depths of between six and twelve inches, the coins had evidently been deposited together in a leather purse or pouch, traces of which survived on one specimen. The hoard was concealed at a carefully chosen spot beside the ancient Wyres Lane, close to sections of medieval wall, seemingly to facilitate its later recovery. Its deposition has been dated to c.1643, during the English Civil War, and its composition entirely of gold makes it highly unusual among hoards of the period. Although a connection with nearby Royalist military movements and the Battle of Lansdowne cannot be proven, the date and location make such an association plausible.

804 Libertas Americana, c. 1783, a bronze medal by A. Dupré, bust of Liberty left with #owing hair, LIBERTAS AMERICANA, liberty cap on staff behind, rev. Minerva representing France, repelling attack of British lion, infant Hercules below strangling serpent in each hand, 47mm, 49.24g (Betts 615; Ford 14/295; BDM I, 647). A few triing edge bruises and surface nicks, otherwise a really bold good very ne, attractive chocolate-brown patina, very rare thus £4,000-£5,000 Provenance: SNC July/August 1976 (5835), this item illustrated on the front cover This handsome and evocative medal was purchased by a relative of the current vendor on the bicentenary of American Independence; we are delighted at the opportunity to bring it to market now, on the 250th anniversary of that great event. Conceived by Benjamin Franklin while serving as the American minister in Paris, the Libertas Americana was intended not simply to celebrate independence, but to acknowledge the decisive assistance afforded by France. Franklin "rst outlined the reverse in a letter to Robert Livingston of 4 March 1782: the infant Hercules, emblematic of the young United States, strangles the serpents of Burgoyne and Cornwallis while France, in the guise of Minerva, shields him from the British lion. Esprit-Antoine Gibelin re"ned the composition and Augustin Dupré engraved the dies; completed early in 1783, the medal bears on the reverse the dates of the rebels’ victories at Saratoga and Yorktown. On 15 April 1783 Franklin wrote to Livingston ‘I have caused to be struck here [in Paris] the Medal which I formerly mentioned to you, the Design of which you seem’d to approve. I inclose one of them in Silver for the President of Congress, and one in Copper for yourself: The Impression on Copper is thought to appear best’. Looking at the specimen offered for sale here it is easy to see why this view was held; the delicate relief is rendered spectacularly, while the rich, earthy patina gives the medal an elevated, almost classical quality.

Where a reserve has been placed, only the auctioneer may bid on behalf of the seller. 16 Authority to deduct commission and expenses The seller authorises Noonans to deduct commission at the ‘stated rate’ and ‘expenses’ from the ‘hammer price’ and acknowledges Noonans’ right to retain the premium payable by the buyer. 17 Rescission of sale If before Noonans remit the ‘sale proceeds’ to the seller, the buyer makes a claim to rescind the sale that is appropriate and Noonans is of the opinion that the claim is justified, Noonans is authorised to rescind the sale and refund to the buyer any amount paid to Noonans in respect of the lot. 18 Payment of sale proceeds Noonans shall remit the ‘sale proceeds’ to the seller 35 days after the auction, but if by that date Noonans has not received the ‘total amount due’ from the buyer then Noonans will remit the sale proceeds within five working days after the date on which the ‘total amount due’ is received from the buyer. If credit terms have been agreed between Noonans and the buyer, Noonans shall remit to the seller the sale proceeds 35 days after the auction unless otherwise agreed by the seller. 19 If the buyer fails to pay to Noonans the ‘total amount due’ within 35 days after the auction, Noonans will endeavour to notify the seller and take the seller’s instructions as to the appropriate course of action and, so far as in Noonans’ opinion is practicable, will assist the seller to recover the
‘total amount due’ from the buyer. If circumstances do not permit Noonans to take instructions from the seller, the seller authorises Noonans at the seller’s expense to agree special terms for payment of the ‘total amount due’, to remove, store and insure the lot sold, to settle claims made by or against the buyer on such terms as Noonans shall in its absolute discretion think fit, to take such steps as are necessary to collect monies due by the buyer to the seller and if necessary to rescind the sale and refund money to the buyer if appropriate. 20 If, notwithstanding that, the buyer fails to pay to Noonans the ‘total amount due’ within 35 days after the auction and Noonans remits the ‘sale proceeds’ to the seller, the ownership of the lot shall pass to Noonans. 21 Charges for withdrawn lots Where a seller cancels instructions for sale, Noonans reserve the right to charge a fee of 15% of Noonans’ then latest middle estimate of the auction price of the property withdrawn, together with Value Added Tax thereon if the seller is resident in the UK, and ‘expenses’ incurred in relation to the property. 22 Rights to photographs and illustrations The seller gives Noonans full and absolute right to photograph and illustrate any lot placed in its hands for sale and to use such photographs and illustrations and any photographs and illustrations provided by the seller at any time at its absolute discretion (whether or not in connection with the auction). 23 Unsold lots Where any lot fails to sell, Noonans shall notify the seller accordingly. The seller shall make arrangements either to re-offer the lot for sale or to collect the lot. 24 Noonans reserve the right to charge commission up to one-half of the ‘stated rates’ calculated on the ‘bought-in price’ and in addition ‘expenses’ in respect of any unsold lots.
