DRIVEN TO DRINK?
As the not-so-newest member of the NonTox HQ team, my journey over the past couple of years has been eye-opening as I’ve come to understand my relationship with alcohol.
I started drinking at 18, which was later than most of my friends. But from the get-go, I was binge drinking I had no idea what my limits were and frankly, I didn’t want to know them. I was in full rebellion mode, pushing boundaries and daring anyone to stop me My brother’s grave illness demanded all my family’s attention, leaving me feeling scared, lonely, and ignored. In the midst of this turmoil, alcohol became my escape. Blackout drunk was my way of not feeling anything at all
Fast forward a few years and many blackouts, I met my long-term partner, became a step mum, and found new focus. My life was busy and fulfilling, and I unintentionally stopped drinking. I still had the occasional drink, but it was infrequent However, when I did drink, it was to escape My justification was simple: “I can stop whenever I want.” And I did weeks, months, even years would go by without a sip, convincing me I didn’t have a problem
In 2018, my relationship ended, and my life underwent a seismic shift I had to navigate changes in lifestyle, living situation, and work. My grandmother, who had been my rock, had passed away, and I buried my grief in work and my step daughter With these anchors gone, alcohol crept back in. It was different now a bottle of wine in the evening, drinks with friends but I still believed I could stop if I wanted to
Joining NonToxicated opened my eyes to choices around drinking Lisa and Leanne never demanded that I stop drinking to work with them, but they encouraged me to try alcohol-free drinks. As the now designated driver in my social circle, this helped me avoid drinking to excess I began to see that I felt driven to drink an ingrained pattern from my teenage years.
Shifting to mindful drinking was surprisingly easy I learned my limits, chose drinks I genuinely enjoyed, and stopped drinking for the sake of it. It was a revelation to enjoy a drink for its taste rather than its numbing effect
A year ago, my health took a turn, leading to a diagnosis that made it clear alcohol and I needed to part ways. My symptoms worsened with alcohol, so I happily embraced sobriety. I had already discovered a love for alcohol-free drinks and enjoyed trying new things
Recently, another breakup challenged my resolve. I wanted to drink to numb the pain but quickly realised that wasn’t who I wanted to be anymore. I had a drink but didn’t spiral into old habits. It was a turning point I recognised that certain people triggered my urge to drink, and I chose to distance myself from them. It might seem like a weak move, but it’s about prioritising my well-being
I started my sober count again, feeling a mix of disappointment and breakthrough. I have much to ponder and many questions to answer, but I’m doing it alcohol-free. I will be 40 in October, and I know right now that it will be a sober birthday - and I am looking forward to it And that’s a step in the right direction.

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH 0.5%
ABV?
You’ve probably seen those beers with 0 5% ABV on the label and wondered, does 0.5% ABV really count as alcohol-free? The answer is yes!
Even though it has a tiny amount of alcohol, 0.5% ABV is way below the threshold to be considered alcoholic.
Let’s debunk the myth that 0 5% ABV is alcoholic and talk about why these beers are fantastic for anyone looking to avoid alcohol
Why Is 0.5% ABV Sometimes Seen as Alcoholic?
There’s a common misconception that any beer with 0.5% ABV or more is automatically alcoholic But that’s not true! In many countries, 0.5% ABV is just the legal threshold for defining an "alcoholic beverage," but that doesn’t mean these beers are truly alcoholic.
Officially, in the UK, 0.5% ABV is classified as ‘dealcoholised,’ while 0 05% ABV is considered ‘nonalcoholic.’
Will 0.5% ABV Get Me Drunk?
The short answer is no. 0.5% ABV is not enough to cause intoxication in most people In fact, you’d have to drink more than 20 beers with 0.5% ABV to reach the legal limit for driving!
While many think there’s a big difference between 0 05% and 0.5% ABV, the differences are actually negligible in terms of getting you drunk
Here are a few everyday essentials that have around 0.5% ABV:
Ketchup: 0.67% ABV
Burger Rolls: Up to 1.2% ABV
Ripe Bananas: 0 3% - 0 57%

Why Do Some Non-Alcoholic
Beers Have 0.5% ABV Instead of 0%?
Most high-quality alcohol-free beers are never truly 0% because it’s impossible to remove all the alcohol from beer Beers labeled 0% can taste watered down and are often not brewed traditionally they're mixed like a soft drink with malt extracts
Breweries aiming for 0.5% ABV ensure the beer still tastes great and avoids the potential negative characteristics of 0% beers. Naturally brewed 0 5% ABV tend to retain maximum flavor
So, there you have it – 0.5% ABV does count as alcohol-free! Although for anyone sober, we realise this is not the case.
