HOLIDAY FUN IN AUSTIN

Ways to celebrate the holiday season like a true Texan

Those visiting Austin for the holidays will find several festive ways to celebrate the spirit of the season.

One of the city’s longest-running holiday traditions is the Austin Trail of Lights. Every Tuesday through Sunday from Dec. 8 through 23, holiday revelers can head to Zilker Park in downtown Austin to see more than 2 million lights illuminating 90 trees and more than 70 other holiday displays and tunnels. Now in its 58th year, the annual event originally started as a small community gathering around a yule log and has since grown to welcome more than 400,000 guests from around the world each year to enjoy its jubilant display of lights and nightly entertainment. austintrailoflights.org

Another hallmark of the Austin holiday season is the Downtown Holiday Stroll. During the month of December, free entertainment and family-friendly activities take place throughout downtown Austin, including curated weekend artisan markets, pop-up carolers and ample photo opportunities at several decorated Austin landmarks. The festivities kick off on Dec. 3 with a Holiday Sing-Along at 6 p.m. that leads into the lighting of the Capitol tree: a 45-foot tree featuring 137,000 LED lights. The tree will then rotate during a programmed light show throughout December that plays holiday songs at the top and bottom of every hour from some of Austin’s favorite musicians, including Willie Nelson. downtownholidaystroll.com

Visitors can also finish their holiday shopping during their trip at one of Austin’s longest-running art and music festivals: the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Taking place Dec. 17 through 23 at the Palmer Events Center, the festival not only features nearly 200 local and touring artists selling their unique wares, but also live music. Guests can literally dance while they shop as they listen to a diverse lineup of Austin music acts, from newcomers to Grammy Award winners. armadillobazaar.com

FOOD CARTE BLANCHE

Endless options at Portland food carts

The people of Portland have found a way around the question everyone dreads: “What do you want to eat tonight?” Instead of having to pick a single cuisine to satisfy varying cravings, Portlandians head to one of many food carts that huddle in pods throughout the city. Those visitors who are not in the know may overlook the ragtag gathering of mobile kitchens, but to a Portland local, these pods serve as the perfect intersection of flavorful food options and comfortable community.

CARTOPIA

Located on Portland’s Eastside, Cartopia is the original Eastside food cart pod and beer garden and a landmark of the city’s vibrant food cart scene since 2008.

Burgers and beers at Bottle Rocket is an easy choice for picky eaters, while their menu of sides provide plenty of options for those who want to branch out. A LIFE-CHANGING QUEST

The

animated legend

faces

an existential crisis in ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’

Puss in Boots pounces back onto the big screen on Dec. 21 with DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” Nonstoplife caught up with everyone’s favorite fearless feline hero as well as the movie’s director, Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”), to talk about the highly anticipated release, which sees Puss in Boots embarking on his most important adventure yet.

It’s been 11 years since audiences have seen Puss in Boots on the big screen. Why did it take so long for this sequel to be released?

Puss: You cannot rush art. Did people rush Michelangelo with the Sistine Chapel? I think not. Trust me, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is worth the wait.

Joel, what was it like working with Puss in Boots?

Crawford: It was a true honor. Puss in Boots is a legend. He performed his own stunts, played his own guitar, died his own deaths — he gives it all for the movie. Though for someone larger than life, if I’m being honest, I thought he’d be taller.

Puss, this film deals with you trying to find the Fallen Wishing Star in hopes of using its magic to get back eight of your nine lives. Is it safe to say that the stakes have never been higher for you?

Puss: Of course. For the first time in my many lives, Puss in Boots the legend

comes face to face with his own mortality. It was very intense. I am a method actor, so it was very, very draining.

Joel, did Puss have any special requests to help get him through shooting a film as demanding as this?

Crawford: Puss did have very specific requests for his trailer. It always had to be stocked with cat toys, gazpacho, catnip and, weirdly, spray cheese in a can.

Puss, in the race to find the Fallen Wishing Star, you have to face Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack Horner and the Wolf. Luckily, you don’t face these adversaries alone. “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” sees you reuniting with your former flame, Kitty Softpaws. What was it like working with her again?

nonstop COVER STORY

Puss: Well, I cannot divulge any major plot details — Joel would not be happy — but what I can say is that Kitty and I have some issues to work out. Too much sour milk between us — more like curdled milk, actually. But you know what they say: you shouldn’t cry over spilt milk, you should make sure you lap it all up. Very quickly. Fivesecond rule. What was the question again?

You have a new partner along for the ride, too — a tea-cup mutt named Perrito. What can you tell us about him?

Puss: Well, traditionally cats and dogs don’t get along so well, so I initially had my reservations. But he kept showing up and he started to grow on me. Like a rash. But you know, like a good rash. Speaking of which, can you recommend a good dermatologist?

Are there any fairy tale characters you haven’t met yet that you would love to face in your next movie?

Puss: Does Darth Vader count? I think I could take him. I do know which one I’d want to avoid. I once glimpsed the Emperor after

he got his “new clothes.” Oof. Not enough catnip to make me unsee that.

I have to ask, do you keep in touch with Shrek and Donkey at all?

Puss: Yeah, I do my best. I try to text them, but Shrek is behind on technology. He still has a flip phone. He’s a very slow texter. Big thumbs.

Any chance fans will see the three of you reunited for another big screen adventure in the future?

Puss: Ask my agent.

Puss, you once told Kitty Softpaws that you are a lover, not a fighter. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, what romantic tips would you give to our readers?

Puss: Well, it’s quite simple really. Just be amazingly handsome and a fantastic dancer. Doesn’t hurt to always be ready with a romantic ballad on the guitar. But if you can’t quite manage all that, just take your date to “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” dreamworks. com/movies/puss-in-boots-the-last-wish

Viewers tuning in to the second season of “You Bet Your Life” with Jay Leno will discover the remake of the classic 1950s game show hosted by Groucho Marx has undergone some changes.

“We don’t do comedy up front anymore, we get right into the game,” Leno, who previously began each episode with a comedy bit alongside co-host Kevin Eubanks, told nonstoplife. “We also used to have a topic and people would go, ‘Oh, I don’t know anything about Broadway shows.’ So now we say, ‘Broadway shows or famous restaurants?’ That way they choose

Jay

BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER

hosts an all-new season of “You Bet Your Life”

the topic. There’s a $1,000 bonus question, too, so if they get one question right, then the bonus question is based on that first question. The show just moves quicker, and there’s more interaction with the people. I can walk over to them and give them the cash right away (with COVID restrictions relaxed), and that makes things a bit more intimate.”

Currently airing in syndication, “You Bet Your Life” features two pairs of strangers trying to answer a series of questions to win, as Leno put it, “month-changing money.” Unlike traditional game shows, however,

Leno is a natural host for “You Bet Your Life,” as he said that interacting with people is his “favorite thing”

the focus of the show isn’t so much on the game as it is on the contestants.

“The fun thing about this is it’s not a game show,” Leno said. “A game show would be, ‘The capital of Pakistan is what?’ This is a comedy show with a game attached to it. You’re talking to people, interviewing them, finding out their funny story and then, oh by the way, here’s a question for some money. That’s what I love about it.”

Leno prides the show on its diverse contestant pool, which has featured “every interesting, diverse type of personality that you can imagine.”

“We’re not making fun of anybody,” he stated. “We had this one guy — the most macholooking guy you could imagine — who was a bodybuilder and I said to him, ‘What do you do?’ ‘Oh, I’m a drag queen.’ And I asked what his name was and he had some silly name like Pretty Polly. It’s just very funny. We don’t pass judgement. Whatever it is, it is.”

While Leno credits part of the show’s success with the fact that people generally enjoy watching humans interact with one another, he also keeps politics out of the program, so it doesn’t alienate any viewers.

“People want a break from ‘I hate Trump,’ ‘I hate Biden,’ and I think that’s what led to the success of ‘You Bet Your Life,’” Leno concluded. “No one is giving you their opinion. It’s just two people from completely different walks of life having a good time and trying to win some money.”

youbetyourlife.com

Leno said that part of what makes “You Bet Your Life” so fun is that people aren’t risking hundreds of thousands of dollars. “This isn’t life-changing money. You’ll split like $5,500 or $6,000.”

VINTAGE VEGAS

Chapel wows with retro receptions

Not all the old razzle dazzle of Las Vegas has been lost to the digital age. Vintage vestiges of a bygone era have found new life, invigorated by a generation eager for old school flair. Even Las Vegas’s oldest tradition, the shotgun wedding, is making a comeback in glamorous fashion at a location that isn’t shy about its love of classic Vegas vibes.

Sure Thing Wedding Chapel is true to its roots as a vintage Vegas experience. Located at the epicenter of Old Vegas style, Fremont Street, the chapel is neighbor to glitzy neon signs and gorgeous mid-century architecture.

Inside the chapel, Sure Thing enhances the average elopement with thoughtfully selected vintage furnishings and a rotating selection of original art. The interior is intimate enough that

smaller occasions don’t feel empty, but large enough that bigger parties don’t feel cramped.

Musical accompaniment is available to add some ambiance to the nuptials. For an additional fee, a professional organist will play for any ceremony, or couples can take advantage of the chapel’s vintage record player and curated record collection at no additional charge. Nearlynewlyweds can even bring their own vinyl or play music from their phone on a Bluetooth soundsystem for a more catered experience.

As the only wedding chapel in Las Vegas that allows outside photographers at no extra cost, Sure Thing is designed to be as photogenic as it is memorable. Wedding packages provide the option to have Surely the Showgirl officiate or entertain with an act that pays homage to the iconic pink elephant on Las Vegas Boulevard. Surely dances, sings and will even pose for pictures if the right package is picked! The “Wedding & a Show” package is the only package where Surely will perform and officiate.

For something a bit more rock-and-roll, soon-tobe-spouses can opt for the lady Elvis officiant. The raucous rock star presides over a swinging ceremony that is both light-hearted and romantic but can be made a bit more adventurous when the burlesque show is tacked on.

Included in the price of the burlesque show is $100 in $1 bills to tip the dancer, who performs at the beginning of the wedding before Elvis takes the stage. Curious couples considering a quick pact can find several different packages at Sure Thing’s website. surethingchapel.com

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

Celebrate the holiday season in Las Vegas

From special seasonal productions to festive attractions the whole family will love, there’s no shortage of ways to get into the holiday spirit when you’re in Las Vegas.

Several of the city’s ongoing shows undergo merry makeovers during the holiday season, like “Tournament of Kings” at Excalibur Hotel & Casino. The Strip’s longest-running dinner show transforms the Tournament of Kings Arena into a medieval winter wonderland for its “Tournament of Kings:’ ‘Twas the Knight” holiday show. Running select evenings through Christmas, the production lets audiences relish a holiday feast fit for royalty — complete with a hand-decorated holiday sugar cookie for dessert — while they’re entertained by holidayinspired music, poems, songs, decorations and costumes. The majestic Merlin even summons snowfall upon the arena, since no holiday celebration ever feels complete without it! mgmresorts.com/excalibur

Las Vegas headliner Terry Fator always gets into the holiday spirit as well, and can be seen performing his seasonal spectacular, “A Very Terry Christmas,” at New York-New York Hotel & Casino select nights through Dec. 27. The Ice Rink at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is another favorite that holiday revelers won’t want to miss. Through Jan. 2, 2023, guests can go ice skating in the desert on a 4,200-square-foot rooftop rink, watch holiday films on The Cosmopolitan’s 65-foot-tall digital marquee, savor seasonal bites and cocktails and even roast s’mores over an open fire. Ice skate rentals are available, plus there are festive skate aid seal and reindeer rentals so younger family members can safely get out on the ice. cosmopolitanlasvegas.com

Since the holiday season is synonymous with twinkling lights, one of Las Vegas’ brightest off-Strip holiday attractions can also be found illuminating the Strip this year. An instant holiday classic when it debuted at Las Vegas Ballpark last season, Enchant — the world’s largest holiday light experience — now has two walk-thru light mazes in Las Vegas for guests to enjoy through Jan. 1, 2023: one at the Downtown Summerlin ballpark and the other at Resorts World Las Vegas. While both mazes are comprised of over 4 million lights, each one has its own holiday-themed story. Additionally, visitors to Enchant can go ice skating, purchase holiday gifts from local artisans, visit with Santa and more, making it one of the best ways for Las Vegas locals and tourists alike to create some merry memories. enchantchristmas.com

MAGIC WITH A FEMININE TWIST

This past June, Las Vegas’ only current headlining female magician, Jen Kramer, celebrated her 500th performance at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino — just one day before her 30th birthday.

A fixture at the property since 2018, the Yale theater graduate holds the honor of having the longest-running Las Vegas residency by a female magician in history. Her hit residency, “The Magic of Jen Kramer,” is easily one of the city’s most enjoyable family-friendly productions, showcasing Kramer’s impressive sleight-of-hand and mentalism skills as much as her charming (and contagious!) smile.

most hesitant audience members and has them happily volunteering to assist her with her illusions. That’s important during the 90-minute show, as the majority of Kramer’s head-scratching tricks — from making a signed $100 bill appear inside of a tube of lipstick to becoming “taste buds” with someone in the crowd — rely heavily on audience participation.

Shortly after “The Magic of Jen Kramer” begins, Kramer does a quick change into one of several gorgeous dresses she wears during the show.

Kramer does her best to interact with adults and kids equally during the show, too, so if she is creating a larger-than-life Facebook page for an adult onstage, she will oftentimes turn to children in the audience to help her fill that social media page with some funny facts. Kramer first became interested in magic when she was 10 years old, and it’s easy to tell that she’s passionate about sharing her love of the craft with kids around the same age.

Whether or not Kramer inspires a new generation to follow in her footsteps, audiences young and old are sure to love “The Magic of Jen Kramer.” The production runs Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. inside the Westgate Cabaret. Tickets start at only $19.99, plus taxes and fees. westgatelasvegas.com

A MUSICIAN MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Carlos Santana’s Las Vegas residency is leaving a lasting impact

Legendary guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana returns to the House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay this winter with his hit Las Vegas residency, “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live.”

Performing Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25 through Feb. 5, at 8 p.m., “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live” has been a Strip staple since 2012. The rockin’ residency not only gives fans the opportunity to see the iconic musician up close, but also provides Santana with a place where he and his wife, drummer Cindy Blackman Santana, can open their hearts, share their music and set their “motives, purposes and intentions toward the highest good of life, people and the planet.”

“One of the more beautiful aspects of playing in Las Vegas is that people from all over the world travel to see us,” Santana told nonstoplife. “I meet people from everywhere who have come to shed their skin, have some fun and, as Bob Marley said, ‘Forget your troubles and dance.’ We offer that and so much more. Our intentions are to touch your heart.”

Throughout the groovy concert experience, the 75-year-old plays a mix of his greatest hits alongside songs from his most recent album, 2021’s Blessings and Miracles. Part of the long-running residency’s success can be credited to the fact that no two performances are ever the same, as even Santana doesn’t always know what song he’s going to play next.

Did You Know...

Since May 2012, “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live” has raised more than $230,000 to benefit both The Milagro Foundation and the House of Blues Music

“Musically, we are always mixing it up,” Santana said. “Our friends who attend will always hear their favorite songs (like “Oye Como Va,” and “Smooth”), but we add new melodies and grooves as well as break out some deeper cuts nightly and songs by others that inspire us and share a message that we wish to convey. The set list is energy-filled, but we always leave space in the set where not even I know where we are going to go. We call it ‘willingness to allow willingness.’”

While there’s no doubt Santana enjoys celebrating life through his music each night, the thing he loves the most about his residency is the difference it makes to young people in need. A portion of the proceeds from all tickets sold goes toward benefitting both the House of Blues Music Forward Foundation and Santana’s own The Milagro Foundation.

Santana said that his latest album, Blessings and Miracles, was created during the COVID-19 lockdowns “to bring light in a time that was filled with fear, darkness and separation”

“With The Milagro Foundation, we get to be of service to give children around the world the best education, health services and access to art and music that they need to grow, prosper and make a positive difference in the world,” Santana stated. “Being of service to humanity and making a difference in the lives of children — there is no blessing bigger than that.” houseofblues.com/lasvegas/ santana

ONE ROCKIN’ MUSICAL LEGACY

“Bat Out of Hell – The Musical” sets up shop in the Entertainment Capital of the World

Even though he misplaced his passport and missed the final round of auditions in New York, Canadian singing sensation Travis Cormier was destined to play the starring role of Strat in the Las Vegas resident production of “Bat Out of Hell – The Musical.”

“I did a couple of auditions on a Zoom call from my home in Montreal, where I sang and performed in my living room in front of the creative team, and shortly after I was on a flight to Vegas to join the ‘Bat Out of Hell’ family,” Cormier recalled. “I have always been a big Meat Loaf fan, ever since I found my parents’ CD collection when I was a kid. To have the opportunity to sing those songs and to honor the legacy of Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman is such a huge privilege for me.”

Performing at Paris Las Vegas Tuesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. with an additional 9:30 p.m. performance on select dates, “Bat Out of Hell – The Musical” brings the legendary anthems

of the late Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf to life as it tells the story of two star-crossed lovers (Strat and Raven) from opposite sides of the tracks caught in a city teetering on the brink of disaster. Throughout the 90-minute production, audiences will not only hear such timeless hits from Steinman and Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell albums as “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” but also two previously unreleased songs: “What Part of My Body Hurts the Most” and “Not Allowed to Love.”

“There are so many elements in the show that make this musical so great and special,” Cormier stated. “Everyone in the cast has an extraordinary talent, the band is amazing, there are incredible dance numbers and I think the story will resonate with people. Aside from the great music, there’s also a lot going on visually with special effects and pyro. It’s exciting from beginning to end!”

While Cormier said that performing in the rock musical has inspired him to write some new songs, the one-time runnerup on the Canadian version of “The Voice” feels blessed just to be able to keep Steinman and Meat Loaf’s musical legacy alive and help new generations discover their work.

“I think Jim Steinman’s poetic lyrics and melodies and Meat Loaf’s voice were a match made in heaven,” Cormier concluded. “The music they created is so moving that you can’t help but feel strong emotions when you listen to those songs. I think that everyone who has experienced love or loss can relate to the music. They left a legacy — songs that will live on forever.” batoutofhellvegas.com

FUNNY BUSINESS

Downtown Las Vegas is serious about its comedy scene. In addition to being home to some of the city’s best comedic shows, it boasts several venues that regularly showcase some of the funniest stand-up comics in the business.

One of the best places for audiences to tickle their funny bone is inside the intimate Delirious Comedy Club at Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino. The 83-seat club hosts locally and globally celebrated comedians every Thursday through Sunday at 8 and 10 p.m., like Las Vegas favorite Don Barnhart and the man who beat Carrot Top on “Star Search,” Bob Zany. Although the lineup changes weekly, audiences are guaranteed to see three or four hilarious comics performing every show. Surrounded by the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Mesa serves up a vast outdoor playground for adventure. From hiking and biking to cruising calm waters and scaling majestic mountains, nearly every recreational pursuit can be enjoyed here. Two regions make up the bulk of the adventurous terrain for visitors: the Tonto National Forest, just north and east of the city, and the Superstition Wilderness, a region full of wild west history and a rich cultural heritage that is still celebrated today.

One of the best ways to learn about the world’s most complex desert ecosystem is at the Nature Center in Usery Mountain Regional Park. Themed hikes, lunch and learn lectures and ranger-guided nature strolls are hosted all season long inside the park’s trail system. Most guests head straight for the park’s most popular peak at the top of the Wind Cave Trail where stunning views of Greater Phoenix can be enjoyed at 2,840foot elevation.

At Lost Dutchman State Park, visitors are also treated to a lengthy calendar of events each winter with daily programs centered on desert education and entertainment.

Mesa’s lakes and rivers are also great locations to experience Arizona’s desert flora and fauna up close. Birders love the tranquil riverbanks at both Granite Reef and Phon D Sutton recreation areas, located on the Lower Salt River. Visitors often report seeing the herd of wild horses that reside here, spotting them just before dawn and at sunset as they graze on river grass and cool off in the water. Lake cruises and water sports are plentiful at both Saguaro and Canyon lakes, with each one offering unique canyon-carved shorelines for exploration.

Now, visitors can log their journey on the all-new Adventure Explorer Passport, a collaboration with leading adventure enthusiasts at Wildjoy and Visit Mesa, the area’s destination marketing team. The mobile-friendly platform invites visitors to get outside and check off their adventures by checking in on the passport, all while earning points that can be turned in for prizes. The digital passport features a list of curated adventures, selected by Wildjoy founder and fun seeker Lacy Cain. The list ranges from easy to moderate experiences, and each one is marked by geo-coordinates making the check-in experience seamless on the passport. Guests can also download the accompanying Adventure Explorer Guide that features a detailed listing of Arizona birds, wildlife, flora, outfitter listings and helpful tips on how to prepare for your visit to the Sonoran Desert.

Focused on sharing the pursuit of genuine wild joy, Cain founded her company to push people to get out into nature and experience the power of simply being outside. Wildjoy’s online reviews and endorsements of Arizona adventures can be found throughout the Wildjoy website and across their social media channels.

SADDLE UP SCOTTSDALE

For over half a century, Arizona has had many horse aficionados galloping to the Sonoran Desert for the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.

Founded way back in 1955 by a host of Arabian horse owners, the first all Arabian Horse Show in Scottsdale owes a debt of gratitude to Ruth and Ed Tweed, Helen Wrigley and Anne and Fowler McCormick. While each equine enthusiast was a sponsor, it was Helen Wrigley herself that hosted the inaugural event at the stables and arena at the Wrigley’s mansion near the Biltmore Resort. Some 100 horses and their owners participated in the show, while Ed Tweed, then president of the Arabian Horse Association, provided commentary from a truck bed.

After the show’s beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, it was the McCormicks turn to host. For two years, their home’s horse arena served as a venue, as they transformed a newly purchased 150 acres in Scottsdale into the show’s next home, a horse facility known as Paradise Park.

In 1989, the show moved to the HorseWorld facility. Later rebranded as WestWorld, the facility has been host to the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show ever since. Now, more commonly referred to as simply “The Scottsdale Show,” the event boasts over 2,400 horses, over 350 commercial exhibitors and attracts over 300,000 attendees annually, making it the largest Arabian horse show in the world.

The magnificent steeds compete in a variety of categories that highlight the unique traits

of the breed. Competitions in dressage and English and Western pleasure riding showcase the Arabian horse’s manners and intelligence. Their ability to work on a ranch is tested in the cow horse category, where Arabian horses are used to herd cattle. No matter the category, no guests leave doubting what made the animal a favorite in the eyes of the Tweeds, Wrigleys and McCormicks.

DESERT BEAUTY

Discover the Sonoran Desert on a visit to Phoenix

Phoenix sits in the northern part of the Sonoran Desert, one of only four deserts in North America. But unlike the stereotypical desert, the Sonoran Desert is lush with saguaro cactus, mesquite trees, creosote bushes and similar vegetation. For Allegiant passengers who haven’t explored this diverse landscape yet, winter is the perfect time to check it out.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN

The 140-acre Desert Botanical Garden near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport showcases 50,000 desert plants, many from the Sonoran Desert. However, visitors who want to learn about the Sonoran Desert specifically can do so on the Sonoran Desert Nature and the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert trails. Regardless of the trail, all have signs giving information about the plants on display and boast colorful artwork by Rotraut (through May 14, 2023).

This 21,099-acre regional park at the base of the McDowell Mountains offers visitors more than just hiking trails. Its Nature Center introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Programs like nighttime creature walks are available, too.

For those who still want to hit the trails, the park has more than 50 miles of multiuse trails. Physically-fit hikers can get a workout on the 15.3-mile Pemberton Trail while those who simply want to enjoy the desert can hike the easy 3.1-mile North Trail. maricopacountyparks.net/mcdowell-mountainregional-park

DESERT BELLE

At Saguaro Lake, the Desert Belle treats passengers to an 80-minute narrated cruise that tells the story of the local Sonoran Desert as well as points out geological formations. Passengers often spot bighorn sheep, bald eagles, wild horses, deer or bobcats from their seats on the boat’s openair upper deck or climate-controlled lower deck. In addition to the basic narrated cruise, Desert Belle hosts live music cruises on the weekends, craft beer cruises on Fridays (for those 13 years and up) and wine cruises (also for those 13 and up). desertbelle.com

The treatment leaves you smooth and sleepy after a salt scrub, warm wrap and luxurious lavender oil scalp massage. Once your treatment is over, leisurely lounge in the serene outdoor jacuzzi spa or enjoy a steam in the locker room’s wet sauna. Even the showers in the spa have aromatherapy spray you can spritz during your wash. Want to experience the famous mineral waters? THE JETPEEL FACIAL AND HALOTHERAPY AT AGUA CALIENTE’S SUNSTONE SPA

Regularly rated as one of the top spas in the United States, Sunstone Spa is part of the Agua Caliente Casinos. An ode to its name, gemstones are incorporated across the spa. The massage oils are infused with crystals, and the treatment beds have heated gemstone pads. There is even a gemstone massage that incorporates custom-carved sunstones. The Rancho Mirage spa has recently introduced the JetPeel technology as a facial treatment. The JetPeel, favored by celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore, gives a refreshing, deep cleanse while exfoliating and helping with lymphatic drainage. Another interesting treatment that the Sunstone Spa offers is Halotherapy, a salt therapy treatment that claims to be beneficial for congestion, allergies and asthma. Outside of treatments, there’s plenty to pamper yourself with in the 10,500-square-foot spa. The lounge rooms have anti-gravity grounding chairs, and the men’s and women’s spa areas each have a jacuzzi, dry sauna and eucalyptus steam room. aguacalientecasinos.com/spa

A Delightfully Danish Christmas

A California Christmas might leave some folks with visions of palm trees instead of sugar plums, but in the Santa Ynez valley, the town of Solvang has created a celebration of the season that is not to be missed. The Solvang Julefest is a month-long festival of holiday cheer, with beautiful lights, tasty treats and decorated streets humming with song. The event spans from November 27 through January 1, and special stand out days provide even more wintery wonderment.

Even without the additional pageantry of the season, Solvang still shines in the winter months thanks to its strong architectural background. Solvang’s rich heritage dates back to 1911 when adventurous Danish-Americans traversed the plains from Iowa to establish a settlement in the golden state of California. After purchasing a stunning 9,000 acres of the former Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, they situated their new community adjacent to the historic Old Mission Santa Inés and created a little Danish home away from home. This Danish architecture that the town has

created and preserved provides a perfect backdrop to the holiday season, earning this town its moniker of “Most Christmassy Towns in America” from Time Magazine

During the entirety of Julefest, visitors are invited to participate in the Nisse Adventure. Hidden throughout the city are mysterious little Scandinavian gnomes known as nisse. Visitors are encouraged to hunt for these little creatures, each with their own QR code that helps hunters keep track of all the nisse they’ve found and gives them clues on where more may be located.

Nisse aren’t the only magical beings invading the quaint Dutch hamlet. Santa’s Workshop makes a stop in town November 27 and is open every Saturday leading up to Christmas day. Children can visit the portly red cheermeister and share their Christmas wish list. Santa will be joined by his usual cadre of elves and his ever loving spouse, who all help transform downtown Solvang into a winter wonderland.

A tree lighting ceremony on December 3 adds even more sparkle to the already twinkling town, which will then play host to the Julefest Parade the following day. Mr. Claus himself will be in attendance, along with over 400 other participants marching down Alisal Road, Copenhagen Drive and adjacent streets in a spectacular display of holiday cheer.

Exploring the town during Julefest is highly encouraged, as the pedestrian-friendly village hosts three museums, 30+ restaurants and bakeries and 150 retail shops, all of which

join in on the joyous jubilee. Some of the best restaurants the area has to offer can be sampled in quick succession thanks to the Solvang Food Tour, operating December 4, 11, and 18. For four hours, a professional tour guide leads guests to tastings of local wine, beer, Danish baked goods, chocolate and the fabled aebleskiver, a delicious Dutch pancake ball, all while sharing stories of Solvang’s unique history.

Candlelight tours every Friday in December provide another opportunity for a festive foray into the frosted avenues of Solvang. These tours, however, are led by a Christmas character who not only takes guests on a historic walkabout, but cajoles them into caroling as they wander the winter wonderland.

Elverhoj Museum of History and Art in Solvang hosts a Makers Market each Saturday before Christmas. A curated group of talented artisans from area studios and workshops will showcase and sell their handmade goods on December 4, 11, and 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance to the market is free, and once in, shoppers will be treated to an assortment of gifts perfect for those who couldn’t make the trip. For those who do make it, Solvang’s Julefest is the only present they will need.

Sample DAOU’s awardwinning wines and more at the family estate

Long before Allegiant began pouring DAOU Family Estates wines on its flights, brothers Georges and Daniel Daou harvested their first grapes on Daou Mountain near Paso Robles, California. Today, Allegiant passengers can sample their award-winning wines and enjoy Lebanese-inspired dishes while overlooking the vineyards at the winery.

DAOU FAMILY ESTATES

Georges says the brothers became passionate about wine after their family relocated to France during the Lebanese civil war. Before they became winemakers, though, they moved to the U.S. and founded DAOU

68 nonstoplife

Systems, a networking company that made transferring medical records easier. The sale of that company in 1982 allowed them to buy their Paso Robles vineyard.

Today, the 212-acre hilltop estate produces some of California’s finest wines. Over the past decade, DAOU wines have been awarded scores of 90+ points more than 200 times. Its best-selling vintages include DAOU Soul of a Lion, DAOU Rosé, Pessimist by DAOU and DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon, which is available for sale on Allegiant flights.

WINERY EXPERIENCES

Allegiant passengers can visit DAOU Family Estates by flying to Santa Maria on the airline and driving to Paso Robles. From there, it’s a 20-minute drive on tree-lined roads, past vines and up DAOU mountain to the Spanishstyle tasting room. Once welcomed onsite, visitors can taste inside under wrought-iron chandeliers or outside on the patio overlooking the property’s rolling vineyards.

The winery also offers several visitor experiences such as the Discover DAOU Experience, which introduces guests to DAOU’s Reserve and Estate collections. A similar option, The Best of the Best Tasting Experience features three glasses of the winery’s finest wines: the 2020 Estate Chardonnay, 2019 Estate Mayote and 2018 Estate Soul of a Lion.

For those who want to learn more about winemaking, the Discover DAOU Vineyard Excursions take guests into the vineyards for a 90- to 120-minute tour while the Cabernet Clone Experience begins in the experimental vineyard and includes a private tasting of three estate clonal selections. All experiences require reservations.

AT HOME

For passengers who can’t make it to the winery, DAOU offers On-Demand Virtual

Tasting videos. Participants purchase one of four tasting flights: DAOU Select ($130), Reserve Reds ($180), Reserve Whites ($135) or DAOU Journey Collection ($125). Each three-bottle flight comes with instructions on how to conduct a tasting using videos led by Katherine Daou.

Those who want to simply share DAOU wines with family and friends can download DAOU+, the winery’s app. Users can purchase exclusive wines updated weekly, gift them to others and reserve tasting experiences if they do get a chance to visit the winery. Future benefits may include personalized event invites and access to a personal sommelier. daouvineyards.com

Allegiant’s Commitment to Our Communities

A month after Hurricane Ian swept across Florida, Allegiant continues its efforts to aid and restore the regions most impacted by the devastating storm. In addition to an immediate $100,000 monetary donation, the Las Vegas-based company is currently in the midst of sponsoring a nationwide blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross.

Enabling community safety, preparedness, and recovery in the event of a disaster is one of Allegiant’s key philosophies. Many communities in which Allegiant team members live and work were in the storm’s direct path, and employees and customers far and wide wanted to help. In order to ensure our efforts would go directly to those who need it most, we teamed up with the American Red Cross — a trusted organization when it comes to providing critical disaster relief.

One of the most efficient ways to make a difference is through a monetary donation, which is why Allegiant announced the $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross two days after the storm made landfall. In addition, the company activated an online giving platform to empower anyone wishing to make a donation to disaster relief efforts.

On Nov. 1, Allegiant and the American Red Cross launched a month-long nationwide blood drive encouraging team members, their friends and families, and passengers, to give a life-saving gift straight from their heart. Donating blood in the aftermath of a crisis is one of the best ways people who do not live in the area can help. Donating blood can not

only help fortify local supplies, it can also help reduce local demand, ensuring more blood is available for those in need elsewhere.

Florida is such a critical part of Allegiant’s network, as we serve 10 airports in the Sunshine State, and are currently building the Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor near the Punta Gorda Airport.

If you or anyone you know is affected by Hurricane Ian and needing a safe place to go, you can find information for open Red Cross shelters on redcross.org, the Red Cross emergency app or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).

TRAVELER INFORMATION

SAFETY FIRST

Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following:

• Location of the nearest emergency exit

• Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed

• Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency

SEAT BELTS

Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards.

CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS

Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel.

SMOKING

Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
