Located on the site of the former Maud Street City Dock, which once housed seven fish packing houses that were integral to the area’s fishing industry, Fishermen’s Village has been a Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach favorite since 1980. “New memories are made each and every time you visit this iconic, friendly, all-encompassing pastime,” said Kathy Burnam, marketing and events manager for Fishermen’s Village. “Visitors from near and far fall in love with the ambience, the energy and the flavor Fishermen’s Village offers via the shops, restaurants, magnificent sunsets and pristine setting on Charlotte Harbor.” Boasting 30 shops and four waterfront restaurants, Fishermen’s Village is the perfect place for locals and visitors to shop and dine. Far from your typical retail center, Fishermen’s Village offers an array of specialty boutiques, like Love Fore Pickleball — a recent retail addition that sells almost everything needed for a game of golf, tennis or pickleball. The Secret of
Siesta Beach

By John Hardy
Many Allegiant snowbirds flock to Siesta Key near Sarasota to visit one of the best rated beaches in the world. But what makes Siesta Beach, ranked second on TripAdvisor’s 2023 Traveler’s Choice Awards, so different? Why is it so dazzlingly white, while most beaches are usually a mix of tan and gray? Why is it so powdery soft and distinctively cool between the toes, no matter how much heat is bearing down? It’s the sand! Simple, obvious and taken for granted, sand. A single grain of sand is essentially a very small rock. In a handful of sand there are several different types of rocks. Most beach sand is a mixture of coral, quartz and other minerals, giving sand a darker color and coarser texture. The Siesta Beach sand, however, is estimated to be about 99% ground quartz. The quartz was deposited over thousands of years through river systems originating in the Appalachian Mountains. Because high concentrations of quartz reflect light, the sand stays cool to the touch, sparkles

in the sun and makes Siesta Beach uniquely and irresistibly soft to walk on. The sparkling white sand is also a sprawling sandbox for all kinds of special events. A major draw and marquis event on the shimmering sand is the annual The Siesta Key Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting Festival. The exhilarating competition is a massive art gallery on the beach, attracting local, state and international sand sculptors. The competitors have 24 hours to create dazzling masterpieces, some over 10-feet tall. This year’s event will be held Nov. 15 Nov. 18, 2024. The Siesta Key Drum Circle is another popular and eclectic tradition. Every Sunday evening, the circle attracts big crowds with the muffled beats from all types and sizes of drums. Not only does the sand draw visitors from around the world, but also across several different species. At the end of spring, the cool white Siesta Key sand plays host to several sea turtle nests. The enigmatic endangered reptiles are camera shy, and interacting with them is a crime, so beachgoers are encouraged to give the turtles their space. visitsarasota.com

AWORTHTREK TAKING SeaWorld Orlando makes a splash with all-new family coaster By Heather Turk
SeaWorld Orlando was the first year-round operational SeaWorld park when it opened in December 1973
“SeaWorld Orlando is eagerly anticipating the spring arrival of our all-new family coaster, Penguin Trek,” SeaWorld Orlando Park President Jon Peterson told nonstoplife. “Guests will embark on an incredible expedition of Antarctica, all ending in a real penguin habitat. Penguin Trek is not just a new attraction; it’s a celebration of the wonders of the Antarctic world, bringing a chill of excitement to the warm Florida spring.”

they join a penguin research mission unlike any other. Featuring two exhilarating launches and a maze of twists and turns, the coaster moves at speeds of up to 43 miles per hour across a 3,020-foot track that traverses both indoors and outside. What truly makes the ride unforgettable, however, is its finale. As the coaster comes to a halt, guests find themselves in the very heart of SeaWorld Orlando’s own penguin habitat, home to five species of penguins. Penguin Trek will join seven coasters already at the park, including Pipeline, a first-of-its-kind surf coaster that opened last May. Featuring innovative dynamic seats that give riders unparalleled freedom of movement, Pipeline lets guests feel every bank and curve as it launches riders 110 feet up in the air at 60 miles per hour — making them feel like they’re really riding the waves! While SeaWorld Orlando may have plenty of thrill rides, the park is best known for its enriching animal exhibits and presentations. Not only can park guests get up close to such magnificent marine life as beluga whales, orca whales and dolphins during their visit, but they may also have the opportunity to view three smalltooth sawfish pups that were born last July — the first to be birthed in an indoor aquarium environment. SeaWorld Orlando also hosts several events throughout the year that visitors won’t want to miss, like its Seven Seas Food Festival. Happening select dates through May 19, the event showcases more than 200 food and drink offerings from around the world. Guests can pair their tasty dishes with refreshing wine, cocktail and craft brew selections while enjoying live entertainment throughout the park. Regardless of how guests choose to spend their day at SeaWorld Orlando, they’ll be making a difference, as a portion of the park’s proceeds always goes toward supporting SeaWorld’s longstanding conservation efforts. seaworld.com/orlando nonstoplife

Clearwater Marine Aquarium
A HOME
FOR HOPE Photos courtesy of Clearwater Marine Aquarium
See saved sea life at Clearwater By Nancy Foster Marine Aquarium
It’s so much more than a standard aquarium. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is actually a working hospital for the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured sea creatures, and this globally recognized facility has aided and saved thousands of them since it opened 51 years ago. Some of the rescued, however, can never be released and are now permanent residents of the aquarium. Clearwater Marine Aquarium may be most known as being the home of Winter, star of the 2011 and 2014 “Dolphin Tale” movies. Although Winter has since died, bottlenose dolphins Nicholas, Izzy and Hope join with rough-toothed dolphins Rudolph and Rosie to educate and entertain visitors from around the world. Along with the dolphins, rescued pelicans, river otters, turtles, fish and other marine life can be spotted from the common viewing areas. For an additional fee, guests can feed a stingray, learn how to care for a shark or get up close and poolside with a resident dolphin.
A curious river otter exploring the aquarium
Hope and Izzy play at Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Learning isn’t just limited to the facility. From the back dock, a 90-minute narrated Sea Life Safari excursion casts off and cruises the intercoastal waterway, sharing information about the area’s natural environment. The safari ventures to a small island in search of shells and shark teeth and conducts a net pull of sea creatures that are ID’d and then released. Behind the scenes, dedicated staff and volunteers are always on alert for marine life needing rescue. Each year during sea turtle nesting season, the organization identifies and monitors nests to increase the survival chances for sea turtle hatchlings. In 2023, despite the ravages of several tropical storms, 17,000 baby turtles safely migrated into the Gulf of Mexico in part thanks to the work of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Opening in March 2024 is a dynamic new Manatee Rehabilitation Center, dedicated to rescue, protection and conservation of the threatened species revered as the gentle giants of the sea. cmaquarium.org

By Gabriele Walkow
No trip to Destin is complete without an afternoon of fun in the sun at Crab Island. Visitors can soak up the rays and play in the shallow emerald-green waters at this stunning underwater sandbar. Spanning four acres, this ultimate outdoor water playground has been photographed and aired on national networks and shows such as HGTV and Good Morning America, and featured in publications worldwide.
Photos courtesy of Crab Island Information Center
Because Crab Island is not an island but a submerged sandbar that is completely covered by water, it is only accessible by boat or other watercraft such as jet skis, paddle boards, water taxi and the Crab Island Shuttle Boat. You can rent a boat at boat rental companies in Destin, Okaloosa Island or nearby Fort Walton Beach and be your own captain, or do an excursion and let a professional take you there. A variety of excursion options are available, as well as private charters on all kinds of vessels including captained tiki bar boats, catamarans and pontoon boats. Hundreds of boats gather daily during the warm spring, summer and fall months to enjoy the scenery and relax — floating on inflatables, snorkeling, paddling around the sandbar and watching for dolphins and other marine life. There is plenty to see and do for people of all ages.
Floating restaurants and mobile food boats offer everything from ice cream and BBQ to fresh coconuts, but not all of them accept credit cards. Alcohol is not sold at the sandbar, but you can bring your own in a cooler. Make sure you have a designated driver and pack your floaties and sunscreen. The Crab Island Information Center is a great place to learn more about Destin’s favorite sandbar and how to get there, schedule tours or boat rentals and purchase Crab Island souvenirs and apparel. Find it on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk at 302 Harbor Boulevard, inside the gift shop at The Edge Seafood Restaurant. destinflorida.com/thingsto-do/crab-island

To further educate audiences, this rescue team of gator trapping experts not only hand-capture these alligators but have also been featured on Animal Planet’s hit show, “Gator Boys.” In fact, many of the show’s episodes were filmed at the family run park.
THERE ARE AN ESTIMATED 1.25 MILLION ALLIGATORS IN FLORIDA AND AN ESTIMATED 200,000 IN THE EVERGLADES.
These “nuisance” alligators are rescued from residential areas surrounding the Everglades and released at the park, providing a sanctuary and protected habitat for gators that could otherwise be harvested for their skin or meat.
ALLIGATOR JAWS CAN EXERT UP TO 1,000 POUNDS OF PRESSURE.
The park is also home to exciting animal encounters with other rescued wildlife including tortoises, skunks, raccoons, snakes, pigs and baby alligators. These intimate encounters allow guests to spend 45-minutes with five uncaged animals for an up-close experience. The live alligator show is included with each Everglades airboat tour ticket. There is also a VIP tour option which includes round-trip transportation from area hotels. evergladesholidaypark.com

Anakeesta’s Treetop Skywalk boasts 880 feet of hanging bridges suspended 50 to 60 feet in the air
MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE Recent expansion continues to make Anakeesta one of Gatlinburg’s top draws By Heather Turk
Nearly doubling the size of unique guest experiences within the park, which is already home to the nation’s longest tree-based skywalk, Stone Village unveiled a new aviary-inspired adventure zone and a new double-rail mountain coaster last November. BirdVenture features three larger-than-life birdhouses, a dozen interactive adventure zones and a series of seven innovative serpentine slides illuminated with light features that wind more than 50 feet down the mountainside. Adrenaline seekers, meanwhile, will scream with excitement aboard the Hellbender Smoky Mountain Coaster, which offers breathtaking scenic views of Great Smoky Mountains National Park as it navigates riders down 3,350 feet of track. “Our BirdVenture and Hellbender Smoky Mountain Coaster aren’t just your out-ofthe-box amusement attractions,” said Bob Bentz, founding partner of Anakeesta. “Our team worked for several years picking the right elements, right design and studying our surroundings in the Smoky Mountains that inspired our themes for both. For instance, our brand-new mountain coaster is themed after the hellbender salamander, which is native to the Great Smoky Mountains. We thought it was the perfect fit. Salamanders wriggle down the mountains following the streams and rock formations, much like our new coaster, so it just made sense.” 60

Strolling through New Orleans’ Garden District

Only a few miles from the frenetic excitement of Bourbon Street, a walk through New Orleans Garden District is like stepping back in time. The quiet streets are lined with large oak trees, well-preserved magnificent mansions and architectural gems in this national historic landmark from as far back as the 1840s. It is easy enough to hop on the St. Charles Streetcar or walk along the streets on your own and see the beauty of the mansions within the historic area. However, Two Chicks Walking Tours offers a two-hour “Highlights of the New Orleans Garden District Walking Tour,” where the knowledgeable guides share the history about some of the legendary properties. twochickswalkingtours.com Highlights in the district include the BrevardClapp-Rice House at 1239 First Street. Not only was it once-owned by supernatural author Anne Rice, but the home also served as the setting for her novel, “The Witching Hour.” The Greek Revival-style mansion was

The Italianate architecture of the pink MorrisIsrael House at 1331 First Street is particularly eye-catching, with arched doors and windows and detailed cast iron features. Construction was completed way back in 1869. The Koch-Mays House at 2627 Coliseum Street has had a host of fascinating owners, including actress Sandra Bullock. The home is reminiscent of a Swiss ski chalet and was built in the 1870s for French Ambassador James Eustis. The historic homes are not the only interesting resting places in the Garden District. Seafood aficionados visiting Myrtle Beach this spring have come to the right place, as the area is home to several restaurants known for their scrumptious seafood.
Revel in the soothing sounds of the ocean while dining on the patio at Sea Captain’s House
HOOK & BARREL This eco-conscious restaurant in Myrtle Beach takes great pride in not only sourcing seafood that’s sustainable and not nearing endangerment, but also using biodegradable packaging for its to-go orders and nonbreakable plateware. Local seafood is delivered to Hook & Barrel fresh daily for dinner, with a fresh catch option that changes each evening based on what’s available. In addition to featuring a wraparound porch to dine on, the restaurant has its own steam galley where diners can watch select dishes being made, like the tasty She Crab Soup made with blue crab, cream sauce and Harveys Bristol Cream sherry. Celebrating the Holidays
Allegiant team members connect, serve and share through the season By Andrew Porrello
Each holiday season there is magic in the air at Allegiant. While a special part of the holiday season is helping our customers travel to and from their destinations, another is enjoying time with our Team in true Allegiant fashion. From parties to donation drives, here’s a glimpse into how we celebrate behind the scenes! With over 6,000 Team Members spread across the nation, we love the unique opportunity to get together in person. Allegiant organized bi-coastal holiday parties for Team Members to dress up, catch up, and celebrate with colleagues from near and far. Over 2,000 Team Members attended our West Coast party in Las Vegas, and over 1,500 Team Members attended our East Coast party in Clearwater, Florida. Being a part of the Allegiant Team goes beyond shared celebrations; it also means having the opportunity to give back. Each November and December, our Culture & Engagement team hosts an Annual Donation Drive. In 2023, over 30 teams worked diligently to gather food, supplies, clothing and more to contribute to their local nonprofits. The teams who collected the most donations received a party of their choice to celebrate their passion and dedication. One of our core values is being Biased for Action, and part of that means Team Members are empowered to create what we call “Network Groups.” These groups serve as a space to gather, educate other Team Members and provide a platform for discussions on topics that resonate with and are impactful to them. These Network Groups work with our Diversity & Inclusion Council and advance
the visibility of Team Members, while also increasing awareness and encouraging a sense of belonging for all. This winter, we hosted a special brunch on both the East and West Coast for members of these eleven groups to network and learn about each other’s mission. Prioritizing Team Member connections, actively engaging in community service and embracing educational opportunities are the driving forces behind our culture. We look forward to welcoming you on board again, inviting you to experience firsthand the contributions of each invaluable Allegiant Team Member. Together We Fly! nonstoplife

WISH COME TRUE Allegiant grants teen’s wish to become a pilot for a day By Andrew Porrello
When Allegiant learned of 14-year-old Ben’s wish to be a pilot, our employees teamed up with Make-A-Wish® Southern Nevada to make his dream come true. We flew Ben and his family from Reno, Nevada to Las Vegas, and he didn’t have to wait long before being welcomed by the crew. The pilots enlisted his help in preparing the aircraft for departure, showing him how they conduct their pre-flight checks, including an inspection of the exterior of the plane. Ben spoke to Air Traffic Control, requesting clearance for departure, and then it was wheels up to Las Vegas. After arriving, Ben headed to our West Coast Training Center where dozens of Allegiant employees gathered to celebrate our newest pilot. “We’ve been partners with Make-A-Wish since 2012 and have flown more than 2,000 kids and their families to their wish destinations, so we understand the transformational power of a wish,” said Gregory Anderson, Allegiant president. “But this is the first time we’ve had the honor of actually granting a child’s wish. Our team members wanted to create an unforgettable experience for Ben, and I believe they succeeded.” After receiving his pilot’s wings and uniform, Ben joined two Allegiant captains in the flight deck of the company’s full-motion Airbus simulator, where he “flew” his first flight to Reno, Nevada with his father and sister along for the ride. After the flight deck doors closed, the Allegiant captains gave Ben the same treatment a pilot-in-training receives, turning 72

over the controls to him and teaching him how to take off, steer the aircraft and land. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, but we know it takes a community to grant a wish,” said Scott Rosenzweig, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada president and CEO. “Allegiant Air continues to walk beside us in giving the prescription of hope for children with critical illnesses and provides us our home here at Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. And when we found out Ben’s wish, we only had one team in mind, Allegiant. They not only make our kids’ wishes come true but ours too!” Allegiant became a national partner to MakeA-Wish in 2012. Since then, the company has donated more than $7 million to the organization through in-kind flights and sponsorships. Allegiant’s partnership with Make-A-Wish extends beyond wish flights. In 2017, the airline donated office space at its Las Vegas headquarters to Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. This allows the nonprofit to reduce its administrative costs, dedicating those funds instead to wish fulfillment. Allegiant also donates $1 from every Wingz Snack Packs sold in-flight to Make-A-Wish and is the presenting sponsor of the annual Walk for Wishes event in Las Vegas.
