LETTER FROM THE
PUBLISHER
T
he summer is always a great time to connect with friends and family. It’s also a reminder that we are allowed to let go ourselves and take some time off. The summer is going great this year, we saw family and had friends visit (that’s one of the perks of living in Orlando). But mostly, it’s been just our family of five (and Pizza our beloved dog) spending quality time with each other and enjoying Lake Nona and participating in community events. We are trying to enjoy the moment and savor these days before the fall season is upon us. — Omar Hickman

y furry little friend “K” is the cutest little chihuahua. She has been by my side through a lot and I love her to pieces. People who have never owned a dog just don’t get that bond that forms between man and beast. It truly is special and the companionship is meaningful and valuable. This issue is a tribute to all pets for all the happiness they bring into our lives. Snap a funny photo of you and your dog and tag us on instagram #Nonapets.

s it possible for Lake Nona to get any cooler? The answer is YES! And this time, we have Tavistock Development Company to thank for their vision of the much anticipated Pixon, Lake Nona’s first micro-apartment community. Can I add, with the most forward-thinking design and functional aesthetics? I guess I just did. Aside from these noted attributes, it will be home to three fitness studios. Now, these are not your average fitness studios, these are Lake Nonian Owned fitness studios! Neighborhood Barre, Rukus Cycling Studios and Club Pilates.

Pixon will also welcome Rukus Cycling Studios, a national boutique indoor cycling concept. They will sit in a 2,600 sq. ft. space with 44 stationary bikes. Rukus is known for high-energy, immersive rides with an array of class types. Lake Nonian Jim Kilp owns and will operate Rukus Cycling Studio. He has done a great job keeping us up to date and excited for the grand opening of Rukus through the studio's own Instagram page @RukusLakeNona. I strongly suggest following be-

OK, so I can barre-ly wait to take my first class at Neighborhood Barre. Neighborhood Barre will be the first in all of Florida, so kudos to Elizabeth Diaz, owner, and mastermind of bringing us this fascinating experience, a great complement to our community. Ms. Diaz said, "This studio will change your outlook on fitness with consistent long-term results and approachable classes. Neighborhood barre is the perfect addition to Central Florida's diverse range of fitness options. We're in a great location in Lake Nona and happy to be part of a community that makes wellbeing a priority." All I can say is that we cannot wait to meet you Ms. Diaz!
Both fitness studios and retail patrons will have access to the lobby. Envision 16-foot-high ceilings, communal tables, comfortable seating and traditional arcade games in a modern setting. The color scheme is vibrant, inclusive to the two handdrawn murals. One, by local artist Carissa Bloemeke, is chalk art on a 30 ft. wall, and the other is spray paint that covers 1,000 sq. ft., by Colombian artist Ledania. Can the Pixon get any more interesting and bold? Actually, yes! It is also the home of Cecilia Lueza's (Tampa artist) large exterior mural that spans 250 feet along Tavistock Lakes Blvd. All this girl-power has me doing cartwheels along with the arrival of all the other businesses at the Pixon, such as Foxtail Coffee

cause pricing, discounts and exclusive updates are shared on this platform. What really has me pumped (no pun intended) is that Rukus Cycling Studios focuses on cardio and strengthening the upper body with its signature Rukus Bands. This is particularly important to know because you will NOT have the dual benefits elsewhere. Another perk is that in addition to live classes, Rukus offers classes on-demand in a dedicated room featuring live and encore rides from their instructors. Club Pilates is a boutique Pilates studio that specializes in reformer fusion classes for all ages and fitness levels. Our very own will also be nestled at the Pixon, encompassing 1,900 sq. ft. (OMG that's pretty spacious for a boutique space—YAY!). This studio will be the 6th location in Central Florida. It will feature 12 stations with reformers, springboard, BOSU equipment, and a TRX training area. Their mantra is, "meet your new home away from home," and I can clearly see why. They offer more than low-impact, fullbody workouts; they offer a range of

BOXI PARK:

ith bright lights, cups raised high and the mix of chatter and tunes echoing into the streets; Boxi Park’s newfound presence makes the statement that summer is officially in full swing!
Strategically set in the art district of Shoreditch, London lives the world’s first shipping container pop-up mall. Consisting of an array of global and local retail brands fused with a modern street-food market vibe, it creates a unique shopping and dining destination for the cultured and curious of heart. Instead of volleyball courts and areas for kids and pups to roam and play, expect trendy popup shops featuring lifestyle brands, art galleries and cafés. And even though it’s all black exterior and radical approach to shopping and dining sets itself apart, the beauty of building with boxes is that no two

parks are exactly the same. Even so, and in the midst of their own uniqueness, we find commonalities that transcend beyond continents and coasts. Both parks, whether in the corner of Lake Nona Town Center or in the middle of creative Shoreditch, provide a place to gather and with it, a sense of belonging; not only as a literal, physical space but as a way for individuals to feel part of a community too. Nothing beats having a family-friendly option for entertaining your kids, an upbeat bar selection after a long day at the office or your favorite team playing on the big screen for you and 1,000 of your closest friends. No matter where we find ourselves in the world, we remain drawn to the chance to gather in quality but interesting atmospheres (bonus points for good food too) which is exactly what this new wave of venues thrive in providing. Innovation and creativity play a key role as these container parks ironically engage us to think outside of the box, reimagining ways to bring people together. Maybe their success stems from their ability to integrate form and function into an all-inclusive setting, allowing us to spend less time driving and deciding and more time finding what we truly came for, connection. You can visit Boxi Park in Lake Nona Town Center on Thursdays and Fridays starting at 4pm and during the weekends at 11am. l

Standing tall on ‘USA Today’s 10 best’ list for places to eat, the outdoor district includes walk-up style restaurants serving a cuisine curated specifically for the park itself. And with options ranging from lobster waffle fries to prosecco pops, its popularity has come as no surprise! But although it’s been rightfully recognized as being the first-of-its-kind among the east coast, even further east and across the pond lies a similar concept but the originator of its kind.

LIFESTYLE | PAWSITIVE ACTION
Making a
Pawsitive Difference BY MEREDITH MILLER
M
arcy is an active supporter of Pawsitive Action, but her involvement didn’t start under the best of circumstances. If you’ve ever lost a pet, whether they were a year-old or fifteen, you know the heartbreak it can cause, especially when it comes as a surprise. As Marcy was beginning to investigate the process of enrolling her 8-year-old dog, Opie, into service training, she instead was faced with an unexpected and unexplained loss of her best friend. During that time, the staff she turned to at a Kissimmee facility encouraged her. When she was ready to adopt a new dog, they told her to seek out Pawsitive Action and get involved. About a year ago, Marcy did just that. And what she found was an organization changing lives, just outside of Lake Nona.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a condition that is often triggered by a traumatic experience, either firsthand or as an observer. And it can lead to symptoms that include reliving the experience, nightmares, flashbacks and extreme anxiety. Veterans and first-responders, such as firefighters, police, ER teams, 9-1-1- dispatchers, etc. are often victims of PTSD, not only because of what they have personally experienced but also because of the things they’ve helped people through. When the trauma is over, these individuals carry the experience for the rest of their lives. Service dogs can help with all of these symptoms. They pick up on cues from their partner and react - providing emotional support, a place to focus and even taking physical steps to help their human. Marcy shares a successful example of the Pawsitive Action program, a woman we’ll call Sarah and her partner, “Jack.” Sarah was a female combat medic and witnessed a lot of wartime action. She lost her arm trying to save

soldiers and suffers from aggressive nightmares. Without assistance, Sarah’s flashbacks can escalate, but with Jack, it’s a different story. He can sense when Sarah is having a nightmare and quickly jumps up to turn on the lights, causing her to wake up.
heading for someone specifically or looking around for an individual after a few classes, if “their” person is late. It’s another way our program is different. We don’t try to match veteran “A” with puppy “A,” we allow bonds to form naturally and it adds to the likelihood of success.”
How do dogs do it? We may not have that all figured out yet, but Marcy has experienced it firsthand. “It just so happens the first time I met Sarah and Jack, I was struggling emotionally. It had been a rough day and I was trying to put my issues on the back burner to show up and do my job. But the minute I met Jack, he bounded over and jumped into my arms. I just sat there holding this gorgeous blonde pup and feeling instant joy. Sarah told me he must have known I needed “something extra” that day. And she was right. Somehow, he just knew.”
Together, the human and dog teams go through classes and form their partnership. At the end, the dog receives certification as a service animal. But it doesn’t stop there. Veterans and first-responders who receive a dog (and training) through Pawsitive Action are 100% sponsored for the lifetime of the dog. Which means, ongoing training and
COURTESY OF PAWSITIVE ACTION
Thanks to Pawsitive Action’s unique program and training, applicants who are accepted into the program and paired with a dog—over 200 teams so far—are almost always successful. Less than 5% of dogs have ever returned home and one of those being only after a veteran passed away. It’s a staggering success story when compared to other programs and Marcy credits it as a major win not only for the program but for dog and human partnerships. So, how does the program work? It starts with applicants who submit a request to Pawsitive Action, along with a DD214 (discharge papers from the military if applicable) and a recommendation for a dog from a medical professional. After being approved and entered into a class, participants begin training, around the same time the dogs start their life. “The puppies choose their person,” Marcy says. “Not right away but as the class meets consistently, you’ll see these cute little bundles
Pawsitive Action relies on sponsorships and donations to be able to continue the mission of making partnerships happen. If you’re interested in helping, please visit them online (www.pawsitiveaction.org) or on Facebook and donate. You can also help by volunteering your time — whether you want to cut grass or work at a fundraising event. If you love dogs and people, there is a place for you.
staying active in the community is an integral part of the program. “We encourage our participants to recertify their dogs every year. It helps give them a goal and a focus and it continues to strengthen the bond they have with their dog and the larger community.” Pawsitive Action has seen a lot of success, but it comes at a cost. From start to finish, a veteran or first responder who receives a dog and becomes part of the program, is given a gift of about $7,500. And
And as for Marcy’s story, it probably won’t surprise you to learn she has another dog in her life. Two, in fact! Delilah is a pit bull mix recovering from her own traumatic experiences and Marcy is helping every step of the way. Trigger is also a member of the crew now and is a boxer who loves life. Marcy says he’s a good candidate for service training, so you may see him out and about at Pawsitive Action soon. Delilah and Trigger will never replace the space left by Opie, but as any animal lover knows — each one fills our heart in their own way, creating a special bond between human and dog. Nowhere is that more evident than at Pawsitive Action. l

TOP THINGS TO DO:
WEEKEND EXPLORATION IN SARASOTA BY MARGOT TEJERA
I
will be the first to admit, with the number of things there are to do in Orlando, you may never want to leave. But this summer, I am challenging myself and my fellow community to explore the beauty that the sunshine state has to offer. Years ago, I visited Sarasota, and I only had my eye on one thing — Siesta Key Beach, nothing else. Why? Because I didn’t see anything else that piqued my interest.
Fast forward to today, I stopped by Sarasota for a weekend trip to check out Siesta Key, one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. But I was stunned by what I saw. Over the past 2-3 years, the city of Sarasota approved plans for nearly 1,700 apartments, 1,400 condominiums, and 1,000 hotel rooms, some of which have been finished or are currently in the works for completion. With the increase of jobs and population during a time of booming economy, Sarasota has drastically changed and has added incredible restaurants, hotels, and art museums to the area. I cannot recommend enough how wonderful a trip is to Sarasota County. There is much to explore, and you may never want to leave. Here are the top 5 activities to do while in Sarasota.

FREE SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN THE ORLANDO AREA BY YAIMARY AGUILAR

fter our most anticipated scheduled vacations are over, what’s left? We like to keep our family active during the summer and there are endless free (or low cost) options to do so in Orlando. Before your busy week starts, gather your family and plan the next weekend. You can write down everyone’s favorite places and activities, taking turns to determine where you’ll go next. Enjoy the process of establishing new family traditions and look forward to creating memories throughout the season.
When heading outside, start with your local parks. Moss Park, East Lake Park and Lake Eola are perfect places for a picnic, volleyball and soccer games or to find playgrounds for younger kids. You can also enjoy a stroll around the lake or bike ride through the trails. If wildlife is more your style, take a hike or horseback ride in Split Oak Forest or the Isle of Pine Preserve. For a refreshing summer day, explore Kelly Park Springs. It’s great for activities like swimming, tubing, snorkeling or canoeing/kayaking. You’ll also find great options at Wekiwa Springs, De León Springs or Blue Springs — all a short drive away from Orlando. Don’t miss an opportunity to visit the botanical garden, Harry P. Leu Gardens. Here you’ll find 50 acres of landscaped grounds surrounded by lakes, with trails shaded by 200-yearold oak trees. It’s free to visit on the first Monday of each month during the summer! While there, ask how you can participate in the scavenger hunt for the “Fairy Doors” at the tropical garden.

If you are looking to expand your knowledge of American history, visit the oldest town in Orlando, Winter Park. While enjoying the beautiful rose garden and a variety of shops, you can stop at the Winter Park Historical Museum located in a former railroad freight depot. You’ll also find the only teaching museum in Orlando, The George D. and Harriet W. Cornell Fine Arts Museum located at the edge of Park Avenue in Rollins College. For African-American oral histories and art expositions, don’t miss the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. And art lovers, take a walk through The Menello Museum every second Sunday of the month. You’ll find galleries displaying paintings and sculptures at this unique spot in Loch Haven. The Orange County Public Library has a ‘Universe of Stories’ summer reading program that you can access online. Your family can register for
all type of events from book clubs, cooking classes, knitting class, art and crafts (DIY), storytelling for the youngest, science & math, coding & robotics events, to Minecraft camp and technology classes. While there, you can learn and research more of any topic when you explore the Library resources. Grab your beach chairs, blankets and favorite snacks for a classic family movie night at Old Town Kissimmee every Sunday during the summer. You can access the list of movies, dates and time online at myoldtownusa.com Stuck indoors? There are plenty of free learning websites and games for kids that like to spend time on the computer. Here is a list of our favorite fun, educational, and safe websites for your child to access and explore on hot summer days. Ten
learning websites for kids: Switcheroo Zoo for animal-based learning games, Fun Brain and ABC Ya to practice math and reading skills, Nat Geo for Kids to learn about geography, PBS Kids to hang out with favorite characters, Into the Book to practice reading strategies, Star Fall for phonics skills with read-along stories, Seussville to spend time with Dr. Seuss and his friends, Storyline Online.net for storytelling by movie stars, and Highlights Kids to conduct cool science experiments. ant to stand out from the crowd that will be wearing the "red, white and blue" theme this holiday? With barbecues and fireworks on the agenda, you'll want to be comfortable and carry the outfit from day to night. My suggestion is to start with an all-white outfit (romper, flowy dress, white denim/tee combination) then add a red touch with sunglasses, lipstick or an accessory like a bandana. If you don't fancy all white, pick a pattern such as stars, stripes or polka dots. It totally fits with the theme, and you can wear it all summer. You could also go with color blocking by wearing the navy/red or red/ white combo.
< FASHION FOR OUR PUPPIES We all love our four-legged babies! They deserve chic accessories as well and I have found some really cool brands that you probably haven't heard of before. BARC London is a must-see (I am using their leash in the photo). Easy, breezy and comfy is the must-have summer combo for any outfit — do we agree? July in Orlando means sunny weather along with surprise heavy showers. We need to keep it easy because as soon as the weather changes from sunny to extreme darkness (we have all witnessed that), we find ourselves running or fast walking to reach a roof and get protection from the rain and lightning. I recommend flats, sneakers and kitten heels for you to rock this summer. Breezy — because the temperature can rise a bit and airy clothes feel so much better. Comfy — because the heat and rain is already a lot, you don't want to add uncomfortable to the list! : ) Find examples of each must have in the featured photos.

CULINARY CORNER | SUMMER RECIPES
PROUD 4 of JULY th
BY YAIMARY AGUILAR
O
n this holiday, during the hottest season of the year, we don’t need an excuse to gather around and light up the grill. It’s easy to celebrate the independence of our great nation with delicious plates of food, games and fireworks. Although everyone celebrates the holidays differently, some traditions seem to shout 4th of July. Like filling the air with the smell of grilled hotdogs and sunscreen and sounds of families enjoying a day at the lake, at the park or at the beach. What more could you want? How about a way to make this special occasion one that doesn’t require cheating (or starving) to maintain your healthy habits? You know when you’re so stuffed with yummy holiday foods that you can barely walk? We all know that feeling! But there is another option. Whenever we can, we make healthier versions of our favorite summer foods. Below are a couple of the best fresh summer side dishes — that also happen to be budget friendly. Enjoy!
POTATO SALAD WITH DILL GREEK YOGURT DRESSING Prep time: 5 min Cook time: 10 min Serves: 4 Fresh dill is the selected herb for this light and refreshing potato salad, but if dill’s not your thing, try adding a different herb like parsley or cilantro. Ingredients 1 ½ lbs. Baby potatoes 2 tbsp diced pickles 1 tbsp fresh dill chopped ¼ cup mayonnaise (or veganaise) ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp lemon juice ¼ tsp salt Prep 1. Potatoes – place into a pot and bring to boil, then simmer until you can easily insert a knife through. 2. Dressing – dice the pickles and chop the dill. BABY SPINACH CAPRESE SALAD Prep time: 20 min Serves: 4 Simple but delicious with a classic flavor and a refreshing taste of summer. It’s the perfect accompaniment to your 4th of July BBQ. The addition of baby spinach not only adds more fiber and iron, it helps bulk this salad a bit, perfect for when you are trying to feed a lot of people. Ingredients ½ pint cherry tomatoes cut into halves ½ cucumber chopped 4 oz of fresh cubed mozzarella 2 to 3 sprigs of basil sliced 5 oz of baby spinach 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 ¼ tsp honey 1 ¼ tsp Dijon mustard 2 ½ avocado oil (or any oil of choice) Make 1. Vinaigrette – Whisk together the balsamic vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard and oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 2. Toss the vegetables in a bowl. 3. Enjoy.
LIME CILANTRO AVOCADO SALSA Prep time: 5 min What is healthier and fresher than an avocado? You’ll love this easy and flavorful recipe. Ingredients 4 avocado hass, the ones with the darkish skin (or 2 medium avocados), ripe but semi-firm 3 roma tomatoes chopped ½ cup red onion chopped, rinsed under cool water to remove harsh bite 1 garlic clove minced 1 tbsp (or 2, if your choice) fresh lime juice Pinch of salt and pepper Make 1. Toss ingredients in a bowl. 2. Enjoy with chips of preference or on top of grilled meats.
CLASSIC RED, WHITE AND BLUE FRUIT SALAD Prep time: 5 min This delicious dessert recipe is the easiest of the bunch to make, since it only calls for three ingredients and you don’t need to do any cooking. If you are not feeling like red, white and blue, toss together a bunch of your favorite summer fruits. They taste their best when in season, so get the ones that are at their peak now.
Ingredients 1 lb. strawberries quartered 1 pt blueberries 2 oz goat cheese for a bit of tanginess Make 1. Toss strawberries and blueberries together, and garnish with crumbled goat cheese. 2. Enjoy alongside any other picnic favorite or as a simple/healthy dessert.

How to Get Moving with Fido BY JASON KASHETA
W
hen I found out the theme for this month's magazine was pets, I'm not going to lie, I was excited. As an avid dog (and pretty much any other animal) lover, I'm excited to share a unique circuit you can do with your canine best bud. Dog parks (or a big back yard) are great places to exercise with your
four-legged pals. But not if you sit on the bench while they play. Instead, work in a bit of cardio and strength with the following easy-to-do circuit. Find a bench to do 15 push-ups - use the back of the bench if you're just beginning your fitness journey, the seat if you have some experience or put your feet on the seat and hands on the ground for inverted push-ups
— if you're an old pro. After the first set, grab your dog's favorite toy and give it a throw. While they're running, start your next set and repeat four times. Next, use the bench to do 24 stepups. This movement is exactly what it sounds like — step onto the bench with your right leg, bringing your alternate knee up before you step down. Complete 12 before switching legs. Rest for a quick dog toy throw and repeat four times. Finish with sprints. Start at one end of the park and call your dog to get their attention (this may or may not work if your dogs are anything like mine). Use your power to run as fast as you can to the other side of the park - or for about 25 to 30 seconds. Dogs love to give chase and it's a great way to get them excited. Walk back to your starting point and repeat 10 times. That's it! Outside of making sure everyone re-hydrates, your next step is to head back inside and turn the A/C to cool. For more circuit ideas or tips to get moving with your dog, contact me anytime at www.kashetabodyfit.com or on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ kashetabodyfit. El Qué Dirán si Mi Hijo o Hija No Habla Español Apropiado BY MARIANNIE SEGARRA
S

FACTS I H H
ABOUT OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY BY YEE LUI
A
s Independence Day approaches, people will soon be showing off their red, white and blue attire. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be on the grill. American flags will be proudly displayed. And of course, fireworks! On this important day in our history, here are five fun facts that you may not know.
1 2 3 4
America actually gained its independence on July 2nd, 1776, not the date we all know, July 4th, 1776. Although the Continental Congress voted in favor of its independence on July 2nd, the Declaration of Independence wasn’t formally adopted until two days later. The first American flag consisted of 13 stars spaced in a circle to portray equality among the Colonies. As more states were admitted into the union, a star would be updated on the flag which changed the layout. The current 50-star flag has been the official flag since July 4th, 1960 and was designed by a high school student from Ohio.
Did you know that July 4th is the most popular day for hot dogs? In fact, hot dogs are eaten more on this day than any other day of the year. It has been estimated that 155 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth — enough to stretch across America five times over! Hot dogs are so popular that there is an annual Hot Dog Eating Contest that is aired live on the Fourth of July. Competitors from around the world chomp down as many hot dogs as they can in 10 minutes to be named the world champion of the Hot Dog Eating Contest with the Mustard Belt! The 2018 winners were Joey Chestnut with 74 hot dogs and Miki Sudo with 37 hot dogs!

Even though beer is now the popular libation for the Fourth of July, Revolutionary War fighters celebrated with rum. According to history, on the second Independence Day in 1778, George Washington ordered double ration of rum for American soldiers. Now that’s a grand way to celebrate!
