SCIENCE Ever met a kid who isn’t curious? Kids are natural scientists. They want to know about the physical and natural worlds around them. How do planes fly? What keeps a tunnel from collapsing? How do robots work? How do nocturnal animals adapt to the dark? Science education nurtures their curiosity and arms kids with valuable life skills. Our activity-based books engage young scientists in the scientific process as they find themselves thinking critically, making predictions, conducting experiments, documenting observations, and making discoveries about the real world. These fundamental skills provide the building blocks for future learning. By aligning our books with the Common Core Standards, NSTA benchmarks, and STEM education, we promote a consistent, goal-oriented application of knowledge from a young age. Our books are fun and interactive, and they inspire readers to go outside the informational text and take their learning into the world, where the real science is!

Every type of plant and animal has its own scientific name in Latin. This helps scientists all around the world, no matter what language they speak, to make sure they are talking about the same type of plant or animal. The scientific name for honey bees is Apis mellifera. If you translate that into English, it means honey-carrying bee. Even if they are really carrying nectar and pollen, it’s a great description of a honey bee!

BRAIN ANATOMY The average human brain weighs about three pounds (1.4 kilograms). Although it may look like a gelatinous mound, the brain consists of many distinct areas, each of which has its own structure and function. In general, the brain is organized vertically, with higher mental processes taking place in the upper regions and basic life support occurring in the lower regions. All parts of the brain work together, but each part has its own unique characteristics and function.

The brain consists of many different regions, each of which has its own structure and function.

Have you ever wanted to peek inside a skull? What does a brain look like? And how does it work? It turns out that the brain is much more than a lump of tissue at the top of your spine. The human brain is the center of a complex communications system. It receives information from all parts of the body and the outside world. The brain processes and interprets this information, creating the sights, sounds, emotions, thoughts, and behavior you experience. In addition to all this work, the brain is responsible for keeping the body alive by regulating heart rate, breathing, and other essential functions. Are you curious about the brain? To develop an understanding of how this amazing organ functions, you’ll first have to learn about its structure and how the basic parts of the brain work.

8

THE BRAIN | CHAPTER ONE

The frontal lobes are often called the neocortex. They are the most recent parts of the brain to evolve and separate the human brain from other animal brains.

The brain can be divided into three main sections: cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem. The most dominant part of the brain is the cerebrum, a large wrinkled structure that sits at the uppermost part of the brain. It is more than 75 percent of the brain’s total volume. Higher mental processing takes place in the cerebrum. The cerebrum also controls your voluntary muscles—the ones that move when you want them to move. When you plan a vacation, read books, or learn a new language, you are using sections of the cerebrum are involved. Your memory is stored in the cerebrum. Without it you wouldn’t be able to remember what you ate for dinner last night or where you went on vacation three years ago. The cerebrum also aids in reason, helping you decide whether it is better to do your homework now or later.

MATH How tall are you? How many years have you been in school? Is it better to receive a penny a day for a month or a lump sum of $1,000? The world is built on numbers, and the sooner children gain a fundamental understanding of them, the better! Our books provide an accessible, fun path to math with activities, clear explanations, real-life examples, and lively pictures and graphs to illustrate complex concepts. Common Core State Standards require that students not only be able to answer questions through memorization of math facts, but also have a solid comprehension of why equations work. Through research and evidence-based inquiry, young readers examine the study of math through the lens of compelling subject matter, such as entrepreneurship and money. Their subsequent comprehension serves as the basis for a solid relationship with one of the most important tools of our world—math.

LANGUAGE ARTS Children, by nature, love language. They make up songs and stories, delight in riddles and jokes, and ask endless questions—“What’s this?”—in their efforts to define the world. Language is the foundational lesson that begins even before we are born and lasts all our lives, whether we are scientists, historians, accountants, lawyers—any role we adopt requires the ability to use language in a critical and creative way. Nomad books model detailed examinations of different types of texts to teach young readers to explore both the how and why of language arts. Not only do readers learn new vocabulary words and literary techniques, they also discover how to organize information and deduce meaning from context—crucial skills for academic success and beyond. By aligning our language arts books with Common Core State Standards, we provide a framework for kids to learn to communicate in a world that is engaged in constant conversation.

Explore Poetry! With 25 Great Projects Poems can be silly, serious, or fun, just like kids! Whether it’s the sing-song rhythm of a limerick, the serendipitous magic of a found poem, the deceptive simplicity of a haiku, or the easy familiarity of an acrostic poem, children are charmed by poetry. In Explore Poetry! With 25 Great Projects children have fun learning about many different forms of poetry while delving into different literary techniques such as personification, metaphor, and alliteration. Activities include many creative writing exercises designed to reinforce language arts skills, plus art projects that encourage children to visualize concepts and definitions. For those children who learn best while in motion, Explore Poetry! includes activities that involve construction, such as creating a magnetic poetry kit. Informational and inspiring, Explore Poetry! fits seamlessly into the poetry curriculum of grades 2 to 4 and serves as an enrichment resource all during the school year, especially April, Poetry Month. BOOKS TO INSPIRE LEARNING

SOCIAL STUDIES From Ben Franklin to Leonardo da Vinci, ancient Greece to the Wild West, our social studies books integrate history, geography, science, technology, and language arts to teach readers that the people, places, technologies, and events of the past continue to shape the present, and will continue to shape our future. Our books encourage readers to understand that their local and global communities are connected, and that learning about ancient Greece will promote a better understanding of modern America. The activities and projects in our books develop many of the skills that are central to the Common Core Standards for education. As informational texts, for example, our books provide key ideas and details from which readers can work out their own inferences. With a focus on language arts, our social studies books aim to encourage skill development such as critical thinking alongside acquisition of factual knowledge. And most importantly, we strive to motivate children to be curious, lifelong learners.

The American Revolution: Experience the Battle for Independence with 25 Projects How—and why—did a passionate collection of under-equipped American rebels go to war and win against the powerful British army? Desperate to be considered an independent country free from the unfair tax laws of the monarchy across the ocean, the rebel colonists relied on their cunning wit, their enthusiastic volunteerism, and their visionary leadership to win an impossible war. The American Revolution: Experience the Battle for Independence shows readers how rebel soldiers fought in horrific conditions while their families back home faced their own hardships for the sake of freedom. Students examine primary sources to discover the truth about events leading up to the war and engage in vibrant debate, strategic planning, and literary deconstruction to understand the official documents upon which America is founded. Hands-on projects engage readers’ design skills while essential questions require readers to activate their critical thinking skills to discover the truth about the most important moment in American history. Civic Unrest: Investigate the Struggle for Social Change From the American Revolution to the French Revolution, from the civil rights era in the United States to Arab Spring in the Middle East, the ongoing battle for freedom and democracy is a profound and fascinating study of the power of human will to change the world. And the story of civic unrest doesn’t end with a promise; the revolution doesn’t simply stop when protesters go home. Rebuilding, reorganizing, writing a constitution, and establishing new governments are all major milestones on the pathway to democracy.

Civic Unrest: Investigate the Struggle for Social Change examines both the history behind civic unrest and the methods people use to fight for basic human rights, such as freedom of speech and the right to vote. Civic Unrest also offers young readers the opportunity to learn about the structure of the U.S. government, the text and meaning of the U.S. Constitution, and how these elements were decided upon by the Founding Fathers. Student-driven activities, including interpreting data and debating issues, enrich learning and encourage immersion in the complex yet hopeful subject of civic unrest.

CONTENT STANDARDS

National and State Content Standards Nomad Press titles offer teachers some of the best resources on the market today to enhance classroom curriculum. All of our titles comply with national standards for social studies or science, as well as with Common Core State Standards.

Research has shown that older students struggle to comprehend informational, or nonfiction, texts due to a lack of exposure from an early age. Therefore, the Common Core State Standards have increased the amount of informational texts that students will read, write, and consider, starting at a younger age. So what exactly is informational text? Informational text is defined as text with the purpose of expressing information about the arts, sciences, or social studies. Informational texts include newspaper and magazine articles, online information, nonfiction books, textbooks, and reference materials. All Nomad Press books fall under one of the following categories of informational texts: literary nonfiction, expository, persuasive, or procedural.

Literary Nonfiction texts are typically written much more like a story—like a fictional story—with a beginning, middle and end. Texts in this category include letters, speeches, essays, and biographies.

Expository texts explain a specific topic. They often contain a table of contents, an index, or other navigational sections so that readers may read only the portions of the books that interest them.

Persuasive texts provide evidence with the intent of influencing the beliefs or actions of the reader. They often include claims and evidence to support those claims. A persuasive text will attempt to change the reader’s mind or opinion.

Procedural texts offer step-by-step guidelines that describe how to complete a task. They usually include drawings and diagrams to illustrate the process.
