FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Community Sailing New Orleans came from one hopeful and ambitious idea: that Lake Pontchartrain, including its many opportunities for learning, personal growth, and career development, is an asset that should be available for everyone to enjoy. The Sailing Center is open to all in the community. But our mission’s core constituencies include the low- and moderate-income and minority communities in metro New Orleans, people of all ages with disabilities (physical and cognitive), veterans, women, and girls. When we opened our doors to the community in 2020, many minority and low income individuals had little or no access to enjoy one of the city’s largest natural resources — Lake Pontchartrain. For those with disabilities, the specialized equipment and staff that allow access to these activities did not exist in our community. Women and girls just needed a better shot at it. We are proud of the impact that we have made since then and will continue to make for decades to come. Community Sailing New Orleans has steadily expanded its reach and influence within the New Orleans community. In the past year, we experienced remarkable growth in our programming and witnessed a substantial increase in demand, serving more than 1,200 individuals — significantly more than the 425 individuals served in 2021. To better accommodate the growing number of enthusiastic participants and to extend our services to a broader, more diverse audience, we are excited that construction has begun on our new $4.5 million headquarters building. The new building will enable us to expand onshore and offshore classes; offer year-round STEM, career development, and environmental programming; and host community events — expanding program capacity to 2,300 people or more each year. Our program offerings will be limited while construction takes place, but we’re excited to open the doors to our new home in 2024. We are so grateful to everyone who invested in the new Libby and Robert Alexander Community Sailing Center. Your support plays an instrumental role in enabling us to achieve our vision of expanding opportunities and accessibility for the mission’s core constituencies to experience and enjoy the sport of sailing. We are profoundly grateful for your commitment to our cause, and we look forward to continuing our journey of enriching lives through the joy of sailing. With gratitude,

John Manard Warner Tureaud Board President Board President-Elect

About Us

Community Sailing New Orleans is part of a growing network of community sailing centers across the country. Starting in 1946, there are now over 400 community sailing centers identified by US Sailing and 42 accredited to national standards by US Sailing, including Community Sailing New Orleans. These public access facilities are almost universally run by nonprofits and fully open to and for the benefit of the public. Patterned after highly sustainable models and best practices adopted from successful programs in other cities, Community Sailing New Orleans brings high impact, low-cost programs to New Orleans. We are investing in the future of our city by building on the diversity and distinctive cultures that make us unique and unite us through the sport of sailing. Sailing together creates a greater understanding of our similarities and an appreciation of our differences, keeps us safer in times of disaster, promotes confidence in our young people, and opens minds to new possibilities. Community Sailing New Orleans occupies a half-acre site, leased for 65 years from the City of New Orleans’ Municipal Yacht Harbor Management Corporation. It includes 60 boats, floating docks, and a hoist. Our new $4.5 million headquarters building will be fully ADA compliant, provide technology equipped classrooms and infrastructure, and allow us to expand programming to meet the needs of the community. Construction began in the fall of 2023 and will be completed in 2024. The forefront of designing the facility was to ensure it was accessible to everyone. All ramps and piers are wheelchair accessible and transfer equipment has been installed into the docks. Seven of our keelboats are specially designed for sailors with disabilities, ensuring there is a boat for everyone. Structured to serve more than 2,300 individuals annually in the Greater New Orleans area, Community Sailing New Orleans makes Lake Pontchartrain and its environmental characteristics accessible to all. We have programming for everyone with a special focus on youth, individuals with disabilities, military veterans, and anyone facing economic barriers to sailing. In collaboration with local community partners, we have developed programs that increase independence, improve communication, enhance rehabilitation support, and provide additional workforce readiness skills.

Programs

Educate, challenge, inspire, engage. Those words are used to describe our impressive slate of safe, inclusive, community-focused programs. The center’s shoreside and on-the-water classes and workshops offer unparalleled access for all New Orleans’ residents to enjoy the personal enrichment offered by water sports. YOUTH PROGRAMS

DEVELOPING YOUNG MINDS, INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

Youth programming is offered in a supportive learning environment geared to those who have never been exposed to boating and want to safely develop new life skills.

• Crew to Captain: A maritime career development program, Crew to Captain is designed for high school students to find potential pathways to careers in the local maritime industry. Over a three-year period, students learn to sail and work towards their instructor certification while learning valuable professional skills and being introduced to post-high school graduation opportunities. In a survey, 100% of students reported an increased knowledge of potential career pathways in the maritime industry.

• Summer Camps: With beginner and intermediate programs, summer camps offer children a chance to learn how to sail or continue building their skills, with plenty of on-the-water activities taught by certified instructors.

• STEM Design Build Sail: Real-world science can be taught through studying the water, the wind, and the angles and shapes found on a boat. Such hands-on classes can open minds, inspire a love of learning, and engage critical thinking skills while also being a whole lot of fun. On shore “chalk talks” are followed by hands on activities and on the water sailing lessons.

“I loved learning the science behind what we were doing on the water and what actually made our boats go.” – Jonathan, STEM Student

ADAPTIVE SAILING

TRULY SAILING FOR ALL

People of all physical and developmental abilities and their families can experience the joy of boating through our innovative adaptive sailing programs. We are the only facility within 200 miles to offer a fleet purposely designed to accommodate all ranges of physical and developmental abilities. Students have a blast while learning how to sail and experience increased self-confidence, the camaraderie of teamwork, and improved leadership skills. Since 2021, we’ve trained the first Unified Sailing Team in Louisiana in partnership with Special Olympics Louisiana and other local partners. We also offer sailing lessons for blind and visually impaired individuals. TOLMAS VETERAN SAILING

HEALING ON THE WATER

In partnership with local and national military veterans organizations, we offer sailing as a therapeutic outlet and a pathway of reintegration into the community for men and women who have served, improving both physical and mental health. Our staff is trained in adaptive sailing techniques to best serve people with physical disabilities, posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. We match veterans with professional sailing coaches for basic skills and sailing workshops and classes. This program is free of charge to all veterans and active service members through the support of the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust. COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL SAILING

A COMPETITIVE SPORT

Community Sailing New Orleans is proud to be the home of Tulane University’s Varsity Sailing Team, which is nationally ranked in both co-ed and women’s divisions, and Ursuline Academy’s Sailing Team. The center also has played host to collegiate regattas and provides boats, equipment, and volunteers for high school sailing competitions. COMMUNITY ACCESS

THIS IS EVERYONE’S COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER!

All community members can purchase affordable passes to access the fleet to go sailing. We offer open-enrollment courses for youth and adults, ensuring sailing on Lake Ponchartrain is available to everyone in our community.

Navigating a course for the

Future

Community Sailing New Orleans began construction on a $4.5 million headquarters building in the fall of 2023. The 4,500 square-foot, two-story building will provide technology-equipped classrooms suited for year-round STEM and maritime career development programs, a community gathering space, storage space and a workshop to house and maintain our boats, and office space for our staff. Construction is scheduled to be completed by July 2024. With the new building, we will be able to serve over 2,300 people each year. Community Sailing New Orleans’ new home will be a community resource in the truest sense of the term: a place where everyone can grow, learn, and enjoy the rich natural environment of one of our region’s greatest natural resources, Lake Pontchartrain.

“My family and I are honored to be a part of this vital community asset. Support for the Sailing for All campaign is creating tremendous opportunities for so many more in the community to experience the educational and recreational value of sailing on Lake Pontchartrain. It’s a wonderful development for New Orleans.” - Libby Alexander, Community Sailing New Orleans Supporter and Tulane Sailing Team Alumna
