Nails have always been an amazing way to express one’s style, whether you like them long or short, colourful, or natural. While I usually know what design and shape I want to get done, I sometimes find myself struggling to decide, while I scroll vigorously through Instagram searching for nail designs to show my nail lady. I spoke with freehand nail artists Hannah Clisby based in Liverpool and Cari Lewis based in North Wales about what nail trends are up and coming. For those indecisive days, here are the SS21 nail trends for inspiration, so that you are always prepared for your nail appointment.

Swirls These 60s inspired nails will have you feeling groovy baby! This nail trend has become increasingly popular with celebrities such as Molly Mae and Kylie Jenner jumping on this trend. The 60s were all about creativity and experimenting with art, as well as drugs. The psychedelic art movement drawing inspirations from the Art Nouveau art style created the colourful curvaceous swirls we see in this trend. Clisby explained how popular this trend it “my clients love nail art, mainly swirls at the moment.”.

The new French The French manicure has returned but with a colourful twist. What used to be a simplistic manicure created by Jeff Pink in the 70s for the chic Parisian women, is now vibrant and youthful. This trend can be seen all over Instagram with nail artists such as Hang Nguyen and Sigourney Nunez showcasing their take of this modern French manicure. Clisby shared how this trend is becoming one of her favourites “I used to hate French tips, but they are really growing on me and I think there is so much more that can be done rather than a plain white tip.” Lewis also expressed her love for this trend “If I had a choice my favourite (trend) its French tips in different colours I think it looks so classy.”.

Pink, Orange, Green and Blue According to both Lewis and Clisby bright and pastel pinks, oranges, greens, and blues are the colours for 2021s spring and summer. Lewis said, “I think neon colours and patterns like swirls and dots will be popular, especially pink and green.”. This reflects the runway this season, bright colours were everywhere in Bottega Veneta’s resort 2021 collection and also in Stella McCartney’s fall 2021 collection. Influencer Vanessa Daniel and nail artist Anouska Anastasia both embraced this trend by posting photos of their colourful nails on Instagram. Clisby explained how Pinks have always been trendy “ I think oranges will be big this summer and pastel blues and greens, which haven’t been as popular over the years.”
