From Kevin Proctor NODA North West Regional Councillor
A huge welcome to you all this weekend! After fourteen years of serving NODA North West I am still hit with how special these events are! The enthusiasm towards them is the fuel for us to deliver them. Yet again you’re attending like a glorious stampede for the party of the year... proving that no one does it like NODA!
When NODA was founded, here in Manchester City Centre in 1899, its primary purpose was to “support, connect & celebrate amateur theatre”, imagine if those who gathered at that very first meeting - which was held just around the corner from where we are now - could see us today,
still doing exactly what NODA was created to do, 126 years later!
I thank you all for your continued dedication and loyalty to our wonderful organisation. I am truly grateful for your support and for your presence here this weekend. And finally, my sincere thanks go to the North West committee. Their commitment and countless hours they give - to NODA and to you - is what keeps NODA North West thriving.
Have a wonderful time celebrating your productions!
From Kay Rowan NODA President
It is a great privilege to share this memorable occasion with you at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel for the NODA North West Regional Weekend 2026.
It is many years since I last stayed in Manchester, but I remember it well – it rained!
I am sure that this weekend there will be no rain on our parade.
Since becoming President last September, I have had the pleasure of travelling across the United Kingdom, enjoying an inspiring variety of productions in venues that are as diverse as they are impressive. Most rewarding of all has been meeting so many dedicated and enthusiastic individuals whose commitment keeps amateur theatre alive and flourishing. The marvellous youth productions, in particular, give us a glimpse of the future, with their energy, talent, and imagination.
I am very much looking forward to spending time with you - renewing acquaintances and making new ones along the way. We are united in our NODA family by a shared love of a pastime that brings pleasure and excitement not only to ourselves, but also to our audiences and the wider community across every generation.
The POSTER and PROGRAMME competition
First of all.. make sure your poster and programme feature the required items to qualify!
(you’ll find the details below, of what you need to do, to make sure you qualify!)
When your rep visits your production . . . please give them 8 copies of your programme, poster or bothwhichever you wish to submit!
Posters from the North West must be A4 or A3.
It’s as easy as that!
Your FAQ’s...
WHY DO YOU REQUIRE SO MANY?

WHAT MUST WE INCLUDE?
POSTERS: must include the new version of the NODA logo (The ‘for every stage’ logo is the new one) Any designs with a previous logo will be disqualified.
PROGRAMMES: Must include the same NODA logo in a prominent place and also the NODA excerpt, we have different versions and layouts of our excerpt for a range of programme styles, all available to download and position in your programme at the design stage, so easy!

Did you know that was founded here, in Manchester, in 1899?
...and this year celebrates 127 years of national service to amateur theatre.
The earliest recorded amateur production in the UK was of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘HMS Pinafore’ (what were then known as Savoy Operas). The production was staged by ‘The Harmonists’ in April 1879 at the Drill Hall in Kingston-upon-Thames. Historians believe that amateur theatre was ripe before this, you only have to look at Shakespeare's ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for proof - though no hard/recorded evidence has been found to verify it.
As amateur theatre was becoming increasingly popular in the UK in the late 1800’s it was soon realised that amateur groups would benefit from an overarching association and so a meeting of interested parties was held at the Grosvenor Hotel, Manchester (15th February 1899, 7:30pm) on the site which is now ‘The Renaissance Hotel’. Representatives from eleven societies attended, the majority of whom were from societies in the North West of England, including Eccles Amateur Drama Society, Altrincham & Bowden Amateur Dramatic Society, Brooklands Amateur Thespian Society & Bolton AOS!
There was a considerable upsurge of amateur theatre activity at the end of the First World War with many more societies, groups and clubs being formed across the UK. Church societies were formed and a number of new amateur ‘Little Theatres’ were founded - many of which still stand and thrive today. Such vibrancy in our culture, then and now, amateur theatre has often provided a nursery foundation for professional talent. NODA began to emphasise the importance of artistic standards as a justification for amateur theatre work and soon introduced workshops as training opportunities.
District representatives were appointed - by ballot - to monitor, aid, encourage and reward societies in a focused area. Today, NODA still has a vivid presence in the ever thriving amateur communities throughout the UK making us the most regarded organisation of its kind. www.noda.org.uk
