IN Watches

KNOW the

Independents Day

Small, personality-driven, and privately owned watch brands are reshaping the business of time. Here are the top 10 makers all collectors should know.

In the taxonomy of the luxury watch business, there are two kinds of watchmakers: Those that make their mechanical watches using parts supplied by other companies and those that make their own mechanisms (aka movements).

The former describes most big brands, from Cartier to Omega, while the latter, generally speaking, denotes artisanal, or “independent,” watchmakers who make up for their small production runs (a few hundred timepieces a year or less) with a personality-driven marketing approach that gives collectors the opportunity to meet the person behind the movement.

There is a caveat: Rolex, the behemoth of the Swiss watch business, straddles both worlds. The company makes virtually everything in-house, including alloying its own gold, but its annual production hovers around one million watches. By most watch lovers’ standards, that sort of volume disqualifies it from the “independent” label.

Since the start of the mechanical watchmaking renaissance in the late 1990s, the explosion of interest in independent watchmaking has reshaped the business. It’s no exaggeration to suggest that hotshot watchmakers such as Franck Muller, François-Paul Journe, and Philippe Dufour, to name a few pioneering independents, have helped grow the category by stoking interest among collectors. (In 2022, exports of Swiss watches topped a recordbreaking $27 billion.)

The appeal of wearing a timepiece by an independent watchmaker lies in its exclusivity. “It’s definitely about differentiating yourself,” says William Rohr, a watch industry veteran who, in 2018, founded the independent watch brand Massena Lab. “The guy who has a Submariner walks in a room and 50 guys are wearing a Rolex. But if he has a Journe on his wrist, the chance of seeing another guy with a Journe is very low.”

Among connoisseurs, the list of independents every collector should know is highly subjective and constantly expanding, as buzzy new makers land on the scene (see the recent social media hype over the Swiss artisan watchmaker Sylvain Pinaud). Some names, however, are a given.

F.P. Journe is chief among them. The most obvious heir to the scientific tradition of horology epitomized by watchmaking legends such as Abraham-Louis Breguet and George Daniels, Journe has garnered a cult following among high-end watch enthusiasts since founding his eponymous brand in 1999.

More recently, a handful of celebrated independent makers have followed in his footsteps. They include Akrivia, the brainchild of the Kosovan watchmaker Rexhep Rexhepi; Grönefeld, a Dutch label from brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld; Hajime Asaoka, the Japanese product designer-turned-watchmaker; Kari Voutilainen, the Finnish watchmaker beloved by connoisseurs for making almost every part of his timepieces in-house; and, of course, the British watchmaker Roger W. Smith, a legendary horologist who makes just 12 wristwatches a year at his workshop on the Isle of Man.

36

Rounding out the top 10 independent watchmakers are a handful of brands that are defined less by singular personalities than by their inventive, often avant-garde, approach to watchmaking.

MB&F (Maximilan Büsser & Friends), a Genevabased brand famed for its collaborative working style, is a cult favorite, as is De Bethune, known for its precision timekeeping and vibrant blue watches. Last but not least is H. Moser & Cie., whose minimalist timepieces often court controversy with their pointed takes on industry topics, and Urwerk, a maker of space-age wristwatches that reflect the complementary talents of master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei.

IN WATCHES

KNOW the

At the end of the day, no matter which flavor of “independent” watchmaker a buyer prefers, one thing is clear: “It’s the ultimate flex for a collector,” says Rohr. “‘I’m wearing a watch that’s 10 times more expensive than yours, but you’ve never heard of it.’”

37

The Shape of Things to Come

Watches in silhouettes other than traditional round are having a moment. Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Richard Mille are leading the renaissance.

Picture a wristwatch. Odds are you’ve imagined a timepiece with a traditional round silhouette and not a “shaped” style, referring to any watch that deviates from the classic form.

For most of the past century, round watches dominated the luxury watch category. But now, in an echo of the Art Deco period, when elegant rectangular watches such as the Cartier Tank or the JaegerLeCoultre Reverso made their debut, timepieces in a bevy of different shapes are having a moment.

“We’re seeing more and more customers looking for something that nobody else has,”

says Eugene Tutunikov, CEO of SwissWatchExpo, an online watch dealer in Atlanta.

Cartier, which prides itself on its plethora of shaped styles, has always been a leader in the category, but demand for the brand, centered on its square Santos collection, began to grow during the pandemic. “We’ve had stronger growth in Cartier than any brand in the last few years,” Tutunikov says.

The French Maison’s signature watch, the Tank, now known as the Tank Normale, is the quintessential shaped timepiece. Designed in 1917 by Louis Cartier—a grandson of Cartier’s founder, LouisFrançois Cartier—to resemble the World War I armored fighting vehicle for which it’s named, the model features “brancards” (or vertical bars) that represent the treads and a case that conjures the cockpit.

Over the years, the model has spawned countless iterations still sold today, including the off-centered Tank Asymétrique (1936), the curvy and elongated Tank Américaine (1989), and the angular Tank Française (1996). In common they share a pointedly non-round silhouette, and the ability to confer “It watch” status on anyone who wears them.

That goes triple for the much-beloved Crash. Introduced by Cartier London in the 1960s, the famously bent-out-of-shape model has attracted a new generation of watch lovers, including celebs such as Tyler, the Creator, who have gravitated to its iconoclastic appeal. (In 2022, a rare edition from 1967 sold in an online auction for $1,503,888, nearly double the highest result ever achieved for a Crash at auction.)

The 92-years-young Reverso is another shapely icon. With its elegant, rectangular design and swiveling case, revealing two different faces, the four-sided model is widely regarded as a paragon of Deco style. And like much of the era’s creations, it continues to be reinvented. Just this year, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced new iterations of the Reverso in various color schemes, with and without complications, proving that you can never have too much of a good thing.

For fans of contemporary watchmaking, Richard Mille’s distinctly shaped timepieces are the ultimate status symbol. Housed in the brand’s signature tonneau, or barrel-shaped, cases, RM models have been the horological talk of the town since they were introduced in 2001. But demand soared during the pandemic when eager buyers resorted to paying well above retail value for the brand’s most soughtafter wristwatches.

No catalog of shaped timepieces, however, would be complete without mentioning Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse collection. Introduced in 1968, the model comes in an elliptical case that resembles a rectangle with rounded edges. With a design inspired by the “golden ratio” of ancient Greek mathematicians, a so-called “divine proportion” equal to approximately 1.6181, the form is said to be the international hallmark of beauty. Go figure!

The Macallan reveals a new edition of its coveted Harmony collection in collaboration with Stella and Mary McCartney

The world of whisky and fashion collide as The Macallan, a renowned name in single malt Scotch whisky, partners with creative powerhouses Stella and Mary McCartney for the third edition of The Harmony Collection. This unique collaboration, inspired by their shared love for Scotland's natural beauty, marks the McCartney sisters' debut union in the world of spirits.

Stella and Mary McCartney's deep emotional ties to Scotland are well-known, stemming from their childhood memories of the Scottish countryside and The Macallan Estate. It's these cherished memories that served as the creative spark for The Macallan Harmony Collection Amber Meadow and Green Meadow, two exceptional limited-edition expressions.

These whiskies are a testament to the artistry of The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team, blending sherry-seasoned oak and bourbon casks inspired by Scotland's natural grasslands. According to Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker at The Macallan, Amber Meadow offers "warm meadows and mature barley fields" with a "rich, citrus-scented finish." Meanwhile, Green Meadow delivers a "sweet and fragrant" experience.

The collaboration doesn't stop at whisky; the McCartney sisters have also co-created TOGETHER: A Collection for The Macallan, featuring 11 exquisite lifestyle pieces. These items, designed by Stella and Mary and crafted by master artisans, include handmade glassware, ceramic flasks, and brass ice stamps, all reflecting the natural hues of The Macallan Estate.

Jaume Ferras, Global Creative Director at The Macallan, praised the partnership's innovation and craftsmanship. He noted that the collaboration with Stella and Mary McCartney is a celebration of "the highest quality of materials and incredible craftsmanship" and perfectly aligns with The Macallan's 200-year-old tradition of respecting nature.

To celebrate this unique partnership, The Macallan is offering The Harmony Hideaway, a bespoke experience for whisky enthusiasts to immerse themselves in Scotland's beauty and the new Harmony expressions.

TOGETHER: A Collection for The Macallan will be available as a limited set starting on October 11, 2023, with Amber Meadow and Green Meadow hitting shelves worldwide in October 2023 and December 2023, respectively. This partnership between The Macallan and the McCartney sisters brings together the worlds of whisky and fashion in a harmonious celebration of nature and craftsmanship.

With a rich history and commitment to sustainable aquaculture, this family-owned oyster farm has gained acclaim for its exceptional oysters. Join us as we dive into the world of Island Creek Oysters and explore what makes them truly special.

Island Creek Oysters has been cultivating the finest oysters since its establishment in 1992. Bennett's passion and dedication to sustainable aquaculture practices laid the foundation for Island Creek Oysters' success.

One bite of an Island Creek Oyster is enough to transport you to the briny depths of Duxbury Bay. These oysters boast a unique flavor profile that sets them apart from others. The combination of the cool, mineral-rich waters and the farm's innovative growing techniques gives rise to a taste that is simultaneously clean, crisp, and complex. Island Creek Oysters strike a perfect balance between sweetness and salinity, with hints of melon, cucumber, and seaweed that tantalize the taste buds. The result is an oyster that delivers a burst of freshness, leaving a lingering and satisfying finish.

Island Creek Oysters is more than just an oyster farm; it is a beacon of sustainability and community engagement. The farm embraces responsible aquaculture practices, minimizing its environmental impact and promoting the health of the surrounding ecosystem. By using an innovative tray system, the oysters are raised off the bay floor, allowing for better water circulation. Island Creek Oysters also takes part in various research projects aimed at advancing sustainable farming techniques.

Beyond sustainability, Island Creek Oysters is deeply committed to the local community. Through their foundation, the farm supports educational initiatives, marine conservation efforts, and shellfish restoration projects. Their partnerships with local restaurants and chefs further promote the farmto-table concept, fostering a sense of connectedness between consumers and the source of their food.

Island Creek Oysters have earned a revered place on the menus of some of the finest restaurants worldwide. The unique flavor profile and impeccable quality make them a favorite among renowned chefs and seafood connoisseurs. Whether enjoyed raw, with a dash of lemon, or elevated in mouth-watering preparations, Island Creek Oysters never fail to impress.

These oysters are not just an appetizer but a culinary canvas, inspiring chefs to create innovative dishes that highlight their distinctive characteristics. One City Five Ways

A vibrant art scene, hip nightlife, global culinary flavors and envelope-pushing fashion make this East London enclave a must-visit destination.

Established in 47 AD, London is one of the undisputed world capitals of culture. Though many visitors expect to see the big landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, London Bridge and the Tower of London, seasoned visitors know that myriad treasures exist outside of “The Square Mile” of the historic core. Shoreditch, one of London’s trendiest neighborhoods, is a prime example, having established itself as one of the U.K. capital’s epicenters of creativity, from fashion to food. Historically a financial hub, the East London enclave consistently draws top chefs turning out global flavors,

gallerists curating exciting collections, street artists and revelers looking for a hip nightlife scene. Visitors drawn to the district’s lively energy will find an ideal homeaway-from-home at Nobu Hotel London Shoreditch. The 164 rooms and suites capture an alluring blend of Japanese serenity and industrial drama, with a relaxing on-property spa, fully outfitted gym and an outpost of the brand’s signature Nobu restaurant and Nobu Shoreditch Bar, serving up flawless, handcrafted cocktails. It’s the perfect jumping-off point for exploring this exciting neighborhood.

Fashion Lover

London’s reputation as a fashion destination stems from historically expert tailoring and shoe-making fit for royalty. While you can’t go wrong with a visit to in-town destinations such as Savile Row, Marylebone High Street and Oxford Street, fashionistas will find plenty to explore right in Shoreditch. Start with a visit to Dragana Perisic, where the Serbian-born designer specializes in slow fashion and everything you see from—from handbags to accessories—is made locally. Looking to maximize your time? Plan a visit to Boxpark Shoreditch, a cutting-edge retail and entertainment experience housed in shipping containers. The vendors are constantly changing, so no matter when you visit, there will be an exciting mix of boutique and brand name shops. See what strikes your fancy along Redchurch Street, the six-block road packed with chic shops such as new and vintage homewares at Labour and Wait, upmarket French styles for men and women at A.P.C., casual clothing by British brand Folk, and much more. For a one-stop shop for curated brands such as JW Anderson, Diesel, Martine Rose, Y/Project and Our Legacy, wander the wares at htown, founded in 2002 by fashion stylist and retail expert Harry Fisher.

Zen Seeker

If just looking at lush botanicals feels restful, head to the Columbia Road Flower Market for a proliferation of blooms. While some of the more than 60 independent shops—selling everything from vintage clothes to antiques—are open during the week, the Sunday market comes alive with vendors. For a true garden experience, Victoria Park (or “Vicky Park” to locals) is London’s oldest public park, dating back to its establishment in 1845. Clocking in at more than 212 acres, it’s known to host frequent outdoor festivals and offer a wide range of outdoor activities such as boating on the lake, playgrounds for little ones, facilities for cricket, tennis and football, and near-endless lawns for simply enjoying the fresh air. Venture downtown to Sky Garden at the Walkie Talkie building, the city’s highest public greenspace with 360-degree views of the skyline, exotic plants and an open-air terrace. Wrap up your quest for relaxation with an appointment (or two!) at The Spa at Nobu Hotel London Shoreditch. Choose a fully customized Nobu Zen massage to work out all of your travelinduced knots or Five Element Acupressure Scalp Massage where an expert therapist will use essential oils to work out tension and leave your hair looking luminous. Regardless of which treatment you choose, you’re practically guaranteed to emerge stress-free.

LONDON SHOREDITCH 105

Foodie

London’s hippest neighborhood is also home to some of its best places for a bite, from under-the-radar supper clubs to Michelin-starred restaurants to global eateries. Settle in at the blue-tiled dining room of The Clove Club, currently awarded two Michelin stars, for Scottish chef Isaac McHale’s interpretation of modern British fare in an ever-changing tasting menu format with flawlessly paired wines. Stay in the neighborhood for a meal at The Daffodil Mulligan, led by Irish star chef Richard Corrigan, where the open kitchen sports a charcoal grill and a massive raw bar displaying fresh catches including giant scallops, octopus and bright langoustines. Start with seafood and move to hearty preparations and big flavors such as lamb sweetbreads, suckling pig and woodfired sirloin steak with buttery bone marrow. There’s been a Basque invasion of late, so it’s easy for those craving this unique brand of Spanish fare to find it at Sagardi and Brat. For flavors from farther afield, taste Thai-spiced fare at Smoking Goat, Burmese at Lahpet and Japanese at the izakaya-inspired bar and restaurant Apothecary. In short: you don’t have to leave Shoreditch to find whatever you seek.

Art Aficionado

Walk the streets of Shoreditch and you’ll quickly realize that the neighborhood itself is a work of art, widely considered the best place to see street art in the city. Take yourself on a self-guided tour, wandering the streets to look for murals covering buildings and even one of Banksy’s masterpieces, “Guard Dog” on Rivington Street. For something you can take home, head to Jealous Gallery for fine art prints spanning a variety of techniques by established and emerging artists (see some of the gallery’s work in the Victoria and Albert Museum). Expand your repertoire with a visit to the Howard Griffin Gallery, which works with artists who run the gamut from specializing in street art and graffiti to contemporary art to exhibit in their expansive two-level gallery space. Travelers with children—or those who are simply young at heart—won’t want to miss a visit to the Young V&A in nearby Bethnal Green. The museum has roots dating back to the 1870s and is dedicated to objet d’art for and by children. It offers inspiring architecture and a fun, interactive opportunity for kids of all ages to explore their creative side.

Outdoor Adventurer

London is famous for its myriad gardens and parks—in fact, it became officially designated as a National Park City in 2019—and one of the best, most British ways to experience the outdoors is on horseback. Venture closer to downtown and take a lesson at Hyde Park Stables, an equestrian center continuing the long tradition of horse riding in London’s best-known park. Anyone aged four years of age and up can saddle up with one of their majestic steeds. While it’s not technically outdoors, adrenaline junkies will get their fix at iFly at The O2, a massive new entertainment venue on London’s east side. Participants of just about any ability or age can experience what it’s like to fly, all without getting in a plane. Clad in a special flight suit, guests enter a vertical wind tunnel to feel the sensation of free fall while high-def cameras capture your acrobatics. Don’t feel like suiting up? Watch your companions fly from the 360-degree viewing platform. Those with a need for speed can ride along with pro drivers—and take the wheel themselves—through the London Motorsport Academy. Choose from speedy, luxe rides such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Bentley Continental GT, Lotus Evora, Ferrari 360 and Maserati GranTurismo.

ELEGANT EXPRESSION

Women are at the heart of The Macallan’s historic whisky brand

Single-malt Scotch whisky enthusiasts know that The Macallan offers rich, complex flavors. Fewer fans may know how integral women have been to the brand’s storied, 200-year history. In 1926, Janet “Nettie” Harbinson crafted The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926, which would eventually become the most valuable bottle of wine spirit ever sold at auction. Nearly 100 years later, in 2019, Scottish Highlands native Kirsteen Campbell became the first woman to ascend the position of The Macallan Master Whisky Maker. Leadership strategically places top-of-their field professionals—both men and women—around the globe, laying the groundwork for another 200 years of excellence. Here, Katie Nahat, The Macallan National Brand Ambassador South, shares some insights about how to make the most of each taste.

What drew you to The Macallan?

The whisky-making heritage, craftsmanship and sustainability efforts are just a couple of ways The Macallan strives to create artwork with each bottle. I really enjoy unveiling information that people might not know in terms of the fundamentals and processes behind the brand. I love to see people’s reactions when they try a bottle for the first time and learn how to taste the different notes and flavors of each whisky. It’s also important to me to create an experience that isn’t intimidating but rather a conversation among guests and being a guide through their personal experience.

If you're sipping something on an evening out, what will we typically find in your glass?

It really depends on the moment! I always enjoy something a little lighter during happy hours, like a play on a Boulevardier or a Penicillin cocktail with The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old. During dinner, I’m typically having The Macallan Rare Cask neat. It's so lovely and decadent with dessert and has a lot of rich flavors, like dark chocolate and dried fruits, that I lean towards.

109
110

For those who prefer their spirits in a cocktail, what are some that work particularly well with The Macallan?

What makes The Macallan truly exceptional is the remarkable versatility inherent in its expressions. Each possesses distinct flavors, characteristics and depth, providing an unparalleled foundation for crafting myriad cocktails. The rich, honey-spiced oak flavors in The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old pair perfectly with the bitter-sweet components of an Old Fashioned.

The Macallan Sour and The Cobbler are just two of many cocktails in which The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old is featured because of its fully rounded single malt in perfect balance, with flavors of fudge, citrus and soft spice.

How does the brand equip you as an ambassador to educate would-be drinkers of The Macallan?

I've had the privilege of visiting The Macallan Distillery a few times in person as well as Jerez [Spain, where our oak casks are crafted], and each time I go, it's a truly enriching experience. It's an opportunity to immerse myself in the world of whisky and engage with remarkable individuals like Kirsteen Campbell, witnessing her visionary ideas taking shape. Participating in numerous training sessions has allowed me to delve into every aspect of the process, seamlessly merging my personal passion for whisky with the professional pursuit of educating others.

If someone wants to add some bottles to their personal collection, where do you recommend they start?

For those beginning their journey into Scotch whisky, I suggest starting with The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old. It serves as an excellent introduction to the rich and diverse world of Scotch and embodies the essence of The Macallan's craftsmanship and heritage, offering a perfect balance of flavor and complexity. If you are seeking to add a unique gem to your bar cart, consider The Macallan Rare Cask 2023 release. Crafted from the finest and rarest sherry seasoned oak casks, it showcases The Macallan's full-bodied character, discovered by their Whisky Mastery Team. For those interested in expanding their whisky collection, The Macallan Harmony Collection is a limited annual release series that explores our future packaging journey. We recently unveiled the collection’s third release, Harmony Collection Amber Meadow, in collaboration with Stella and Mary McCartney to celebrate the lush, fertile lands of Scotland that connect all those who have stood upon them for generations.
