IN AUTOMOTIVE KNOW the

Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate

With all car manufacturers – even exotic ones –being forced to embrace electrification due to netzero government policies and consign their purely internal combustion treasures to museums, what we’re witnessing right now is a final push by some of the most storied sports car marques to unleash their unabashed give-it-everything-you’ve-got curtain call. And behold, the latest and last DBS from Aston Martin, the DBS 770 Ultimate, which kicks off Aston’s 110th birthday celebrations.

James Bond was described by his creator, Ian Fleming, as being a “blunt instrument wielded by a government department”. It’s questionable as to whether the UK’s defense budget bean counters would sign-off the cost of a $387,600 supercar, but 007 would look very much at home in the 770 – which refers to its 770PS or, in real money, 759 bhp. That’s more horses than any series-production Aston before, and an increase of 44bhp over the standard DBS.

They say power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Therefore, this 5.2 twin-turbo V12 could pose very bad news indeed. But as a blunt instrument, goodness, it does the business. It wasn’t like the DBS was short on oomph to start with. With a gargantuan 664 lb-ft of torque available from just 1,800 bhp, it’ll take huge restraint not to shred the tires at every green light. Zero to 62 mph takes 3.4 seconds as it limbers its way up to 211 mph. That’s not an improvement on the standard car, surprisingly. Where most of the difference lies is the feel, with upgraded steering, tightened front stiffness and adaptive dampers. The handling is now more precise, and the steering has more feedback, while overall ride quality is unharmed.

Then there are the aggressive, yet elegant, looks at which Aston is so masterful; additions include a new front splitter, a ‘horseshoe’ engine vent to help pull more air through the radiators, loads of carbon elements, and a new rear diffuser. Most gob smacking are the 21 inch multi-spoke alloys, inspired by Aston’s wild and one-off Victor project, finished in either satin silver or satin black. Inside, there’s additional 770 jewelry, leather, Alcantara, and carbon everywhere you look. The infotainment system remains the Aston’s weak point, and brand customers will need to wait until next year for the next-gen Mercedes-sourced UX.

The DBS 770 Ultimate is limited-edition; 300 coupes and 199 Volantes will be built and, we’re sorry to report, they’re already all sold out. Getting one’s hands on this brute-in-a-suit may require a statesanctioned assassination or two.

Ferrari Purosangue

This is the most controversial Ferrari ever to roll off Maranello’s hallowed production line. Ferrari specifically says, ‘don’t call it an SUV,’ but there’s no way around it. ‘Super’ SUVs are not new. Supercar manufacturers have been blending their genes with that of the Range Rover for several years now. See the Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus, and the slightly less exotic offerings of Maserati, Bentley and Porsche (which now sells four times as many SUVs as it sells 911s). They’ve recognized that people love these supercar brands, and they love luxury SUVs even more. But Ferrari purists are, understandably, upset.

The Italian icon’s first-ever four-door is called the Purosangue – pronounced purosang-way. It’s a fabulous name. The best since Testarossa (redhead). It means ‘pure blood’ in Italian, or ‘thoroughbred’, which is fitting for a marque whose symbol is the prancing horse. Makes you wonder why it’s taken them 76 years to use it. It seems they were waiting for a challenge and to goad the naysayers. Is the Purosangue a real Ferrari?

Well, contrary to our initial concerns, it certainly looks like one. It’s a cohesive design; a high-riding and roomy GT that’s just the right parts aggressive and elegant; well proportioned; innovative in its aero without being nerdy; and, crucially, masking its girth so that it looks lissom and genuinely athletic. There are familial nods to other cars in the current Maranello model line-up: the SF90 at the front, the 296 at the rear,

maybe a bit of 812 and Roma in the middle, references to the Daytona of the late 1960s and early ‘70s, and an overall Berlinetta shape. This was one of the most high-wire automotive briefs of the last half-century, and Ferrari have nailed it.

It is a supercar with added practicality, not a steroid-injected luxe load-lugger. You really find this behind the wheel. The normally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 is a final hurrah for the company’s last un-boosted gloriously cacophonous leviathan. Mounted midfront for perfect weight distribution, it absolutely roars with 715 bhp arriving at 7,750 rpm and 80% of its Kratosian torque available from just 2,100. Other road users are swatted away like flies with even the smallest gap in which to overtake. Zero to 60 mph takes under 3.3s and the top speed lies beyond 193 mph. The smoothness and precision of its handling – aided by active suspension and rear-wheel-steer - blows anything else of this shape into the weeds.

Your $400,000 (you’re sitting down while reading this, right?) also buys you rearhinged rear doors like on a Rolls-Royce, four bucket seats with massage function (another Ferrari first), and enough luggage space for several sets of skis and golf bags.

Even if you took the prancing horse badges off, we’ll say this: It looks like a Ferrari, sounds like a Ferrari, and goes like a Ferrari. The Purosangue is the real deal and is surely the most desirable car in the world.

Detroit’s latest three-ton $100,000 SUV is surely the most presidential mode of transport, short of acquiring the keys to The Beast or Air Force One. American through-andthrough, and with a blue-collar badge, the GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate makes the Cadillac Escalade look prissy. If it were an actual president, it’d be Theodore Roosevelt, who was an amateur boxer and wrestler.

While its materials, ride, and 6.2-liter 420 bhp V8 drivetrain will do little to worry its more efficient European rivals, such as the Range Rover, Mercedes GLS or Audi SQ7, it makes up for it in size and intimidation. Zoom up to someone’s fender and they will get out of your way. Likewise, you can cruise straight into restricted and sealed-off areas as guards will assume you’re the Feds. And it’s not all brawn and no brain, because it comes with the latest state-ofthe-art semi-self-driving technology; so long as you’re looking where the car is going, you can take your hands off the wheel and spend as long as you like fumbling for the phone/potato chips/Glock you dropped down the side of the seat. The car will take care of overtaking, braking, accelerating, indicating and lane changes on more than 200,000 miles of compatible US and Canadian highways, with more coming online all the time.

‘Vader Chrome’ – a dark-tinted chrome trim – makes everything look extra menacing. And four extra Bose speakers over the standard Denali’s 14 are mounted in the front-row headrests, so you can cue up your own banging entrance music; on which note, each of the three rows of seats can accommodate heavyweight champs and NBA stars. The interior is trimmed in umber-colored full-grain leather, open-pore wood, and flourishes of aluminum. It’s business-like, as opposed to trendsetting.

Despite its 210in length, it’s surprisingly maneuverable and comes into its own off-road, where it’ll leave a rooster tail of dust en route to its top-secret desert or mountain destination. On tarmac, it’s genuinely quick with 60 mph arriving in six seconds. Bullet-proof glass, bomb-resistant chassis and a transfusion bag of the chief executive’s blood are all optional extras.

LEGO x McLaren

As McLaren marks its 60th anniversary, the supercar maker has teamed up with the LEGO Group to release the first-ever double pack of LEGO Speed Champions featuring two of McLaren's most iconic supercars: the McLaren F1 LM and McLaren Solus GT. In celebration of McLaren’s 60th milestone and the launch of the first double-pack together, designers from both LEGO and McLaren recently came together at LEGO’s HQ in Billund, Denmark to celebrate the brands’ long-standing partnership.

The Top Drop-Tops for Spring Cruising

There is simply no finer feeling than taking that first top-down cruise on the day when the weather finally turns the corner and we exchange heated seats for abundant spring sunshine. Those who don’t already own convertibles start feverishly searching the web and/or Road & Track, while calculating how much they can possibly afford to spend on a new car. Suddenly taking out a second mortgage looks extremely tempting, interest rates be damned. And there are some devilishly good reasons for doing so, thanks to the very best British and Italian marques who understand that while man’s need for open-air driving may be atavistic, it sure as hell doesn’t hurt to have 600-plus horses and a race-bred power plant. So here are our picks for this season’s five wickedest whips, from understated and elegant to “where are my heart meds?” — plus a few in between.

When Maserati first debuted its new MC20 supercar in 2020, we started counting the days until the legendary trident-badged marque debuted a drop-top (or “spyder” in Italian sports-car speak) version. Finally in late 2022, they unveiled the MC20 Cielo — that’s Italian for “sky” — declaring the new convertible would be characterized by an incomparable “Sky Feeling.” The MC, you might recall, stands for Maserati Corse (“racing”), so this is a vehicle dually devoted to “driving pleasure in the great outdoors” and “all the prerogatives of a true supercar.” One hundred percent made in Italy, it was developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena and produced at their historic factory on Viale Ciro Menotti, linking the Cielo’s state-of-the-art styling and engineering to Maserati’s deeply impressive heritage and competition pedigree. With 621 hp courtesy of its 3.0L, Twin-Turbo V6 “Nettuno” engine, the MC20 Cielo rockets from 0 to 62 mph in just under 3 seconds and tops out at nearly 200 mph. No wonder British GQ has dubbed it “the thinking person’s mid-engined, drop-top supercar…more likely to be driven in circles around [London’s] Royal Opera House” than buzzed along in some less cerebral locale. However, we think a car as perfectly balanced as this — for an Italian exotic, it manages to command attention without screaming “Look at me!” — with its unmistakable Maserati styling and smoothly powerful core, can be driven anywhere you damn well please, with the maximum of pleasure to be derived from the experience.

Ferrari 296 GTS

While Maserati certainly more than holds its own in the supercar sphere, there will always be those purists among us for whom it remains a “baby Ferrari” — and for these men of means, only the real thing will do. Nor does the marque ever fail to deliver a pulse-racing new drop-top for its Ferraristi to salivate over; there’s a reason the waiting list to buy any new Prancing Horse typically runs close to a couple of years. This season the object of obsession is the 296 GTS, proffered as the “evolution of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined two-seater ‘berlinetta spider’ concept,” and powered by a new 120° V6 engine coupled with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) electric motor. That makes it the most powerful ride on this list, with a whopping 818 horsepower, kicking it from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph. EVO magazine calls it “compact, pure and almost classically styled,” noting that while it is “wildly potent,” it’s also a rare Ferrari that “seems to want its driver to enjoy peace, to take in the sights and sounds” sans the roar of the larger-cylindered engines the Maranello-based marque built its reputation on. Now that Ferrari has declared this to be “the age of the V6,” the 296 GTS is leading the charge as a “peerlessly elegant epitome of the open-air hybrid concept [with] unprecedented architecture for a spider,” the brand says. Lighter, faster, more nimble — and, dare we say, a little more laid-back? This is certainly a Ferrari for a new era.

Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder

If you’ve ever looked at a Ferrari and thought “Nice, but a bit tame,” odds are good the object of your lust has a raging bull on it in place of a prancing horse. Lamborghini has carved out quite a niche for itself by dialing up the classic Italian combo of eye-popping performance with aggressive styling, with the key difference that any idea of restraint has been chucked out the window. This has not only made its mouthwatering models popular with the roaring-down-CollinsAvenue crowd, but also with those who like to whip their rides around the track on the weekend. And Lamborghini has answered their prayers with the ultimate drop-top for just such a requirement: the Huracán EVO (for evolution) Spyder. Its 640 hp may be less than that of the 296 GTS, but thanks to its naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10, this

beauty “roars with authority as the exhaust announces the presence of a formidable machine,” whereas the Ferrari emits more of a throaty growl. The EVO Spyder is nearly as fast, as well, with a 0 to 62 mph clock of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 202 mph. “The Huracán EVO Spyder incorporates all the performance, next-generation vehicle control and aerodynamic features of the EVO coupé, with its own unique personality and a driving excitement that only an open-top car can offer,” as Stefano Domenicali, the dashing chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, puts it. “The Spyder continues the Huracán EVO’s evolutionary charge: extremely easy to drive while excelling as a highly responsive, fun super-sports car…. [Its] design, performance and exhilarating open-air drive experience are literally breathtaking.”

Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate Volante

Now on to the Brits. Keep the noise down a bit, please. There’s a reason they call them “secret” agents. That’s more like it. The Aston Martin DBS Volante, is, of course, the kind of car James Bond would drive. And 007 would especially chomp at the bit to get his hands on the just-announced open-top edition of the new DBS 770 Ultimate, the “final celebration of the DBS nameplate and the most powerful DBS to date.” The Volante version, limited to just 199 examples worldwide, will of course lay claim to nearly 800 hp as its name suggests, though few details had been released as of press time. The car is expected to be powered by an amped-up version of the standard DBS’s 5.2-liter twin-turbo V-12, which is of course nothing to sneeze at, boasting even more cylinders than the Huracán EVO Spyder — and, therefore, in point of fact, perhaps even a bit too vocal for the likes of MI6, unless you soft-pedal it. Aston Martin’s styling, however, is much more at home in civilized surroundings; one can’t really imagine pulling up to Blades, the semi-fictional London gentleman’s club in St. James, for a confab with M at the wheel of a Lamborghini. Until and unless you can get your gloves on one of the 770 Ultimate cars, we’d wager that the “stock” DBS Volante is more than adequate for the average millionaire, whether British or not.

Morgan Plus Four

When it comes to quintessential British sports cars, none are more retro-exclusive and elegantly evocative of the grand old days than those of the Morgan Motor Company. It was, after all, the very first car purchased by the ultimate Anglophile, Ralph Lauren, when he first became a success; and, even more tellingly, he still owns it today. Morgans, while continuing to be built mainly from a combination of ashwood, aluminum, and leather, are nonetheless representative of the very latest in engineering and a hell of a lot of fun to drive — while offering a more exclusive-seeming and much more gentlemanly experience at a fraction of the price of the other cars on this list, amongst which it can doubtlessly hold its own. Do not expect the Plus Four — the follow-up to the Plus Six Morgan launched in 2019, though all but indistinguishable from Ralph’s ride of 50 years ago — to keep pace with an Italian supercar. Its BMW-sourced 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder engine delivers a relatively modest 251 hp and a top speed of 149 mph, but that’s hardly the point of a Morgan. It simply exudes exponentially more class, out of all proportion to its price tag. For a hand-built British motorcar that wouldn’t look out of place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, it nonetheless can emit a serious growl when the pedal is pressed with extra verve. When our friend Duncan Quinn drove one around London’s Mayfair recently, people popped their heads out of shops and restaurants all down the street to see what looked so stately, yet sounded so menacing when provoked. The sheep’s clothing in this case is impeccably tailored by Savile Row.

The Little Car Company

Without a fully-grown driver to draw attention to its products’ scale, and maybe by losing the first word in its name, you’d swear blind the Little Car Company were producing full-size replicas from motoring’s most valuable archive. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that was an all-original 1926 Bugatti Type 35, 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa or 1963 Aston Martin DB5 convertible before you, such is the attention to detail and craftsmanship.

The 75%-scale electric versions of three of the most iconic roadsters ever created are manufactured under license from these prestigious and uncompromising supercar companies in a small unit at Bicester Heritage, a historic vehicle heartland on the site of a World War II Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire, UK. The Little Car Company was launched in 2019 when Bugatti sought to celebrate its 110th birthday by recreating the ‘Bugatti Baby’ which Ettore Bugatti built for his youngest son Roland. That was a 50% scale electric buggy, built in 1926 and based on a Type 35 too, but the Little Car Company made theirs large enough to accommodate an adult. Like the original, the Bugatti Baby II is a limited edition: 500 are being built, priced at $38,400 before taxes and shipping. Power is available up to 10kW and there’s a top speed of up to 42 mph (in some countries, like Canada and the US, it has to be restricted).

Inspired by a one-off built by Aston Martin which was delivered to the Buckingham Palace nursery in 1966, the DB5 Junior’s production run reflects that of the real thing – 1,059 – and is priced from $59,600. Power is up to 10 kW and a top speed of up to 45 mph, and there’s also a more potent No Time To Die special edition which is loaded with 007 gadgets including mini guns, rotating license plates and smoke screen priced from $109,500.

The Ferrari is the most exclusive. In close collaboration with Ferrari’s Centro Stile and Classiche Department, 299 examples of the Testa Rossa J will be built, priced from $103,500. There’s an even rarer $130,000 ‘Pacco Gara’ version designed for racing, with 14 kW of power, a roll cage and Sabelt harnesses, adjustable dampers and brake bias.

Getting permission from the likes of Ferrari to do anything with their brand is a major hurdle. How did Little Car Company CEO Ben Hedley do it? “We took a Bugatti Baby II to Ferrari very discreetly, brought it through the back gate at Maranello and put it in front of the board. They said, ‘we thought you were bringing us a toy, but you’ve brought us a little car.’

Hedley, who studied mechanical engineering at Cambridge University before becoming an entrepreneur, has also been COO of Linley, the high-end furniture maker founded by King Charles III’s cousin Lord Snowdon. This gave him core insight into the luxury industry. The little cars he produces are “not replicas, they’re reinterpretations. And we’ve had a bit of fun with them, like the little manettino dial for the mode selection on the Ferrari’s Nardi steering wheel. Or the missile switch on the Aston. We feel like the naughty cousins of these car companies”. There’s also a Pur Sang version of the Bugatti, boasting a ‘speed key’ to unlock extra horsepower, which is inspired by the modern Chiron hypercar, and a Carbon Edition inspired by the 261 mph Mistral; both are aimed at collectors. One wonders how many ever get into the hands of children.

IN AUTOMOTIVE KNOW the
50

Each little car is based on a digital 3D scan of all the full-size vintage car parts or archived design drawings. Each uses the original suspension geometry design and the aluminum is hand-beaten. The paint is original Bugatti, Aston and Ferrari paint. So too the leather and other materials, and those iconic badges in enamel or silver. In the Testa Rossa J, the pedals are taken directly from the F8 Tributo. The handling is as authentic as an enthusiast could hope for, and is developed, tuned and signed-off by the chief test driver from each supercar marque –all professional racing drivers. There are different driving modes to manage the amount of power at the rear wheels and various safety features with children in mind, but generally the cars are designed with the over-14s in mind.

The cars are built to order and are fully-customizable, and the waiting list is eight months. However, there are a handful of stock cars ready to drive away from Harrods and Selfridges department stores in London and a few Ferrari dealers in the US. “If you teach your kids to learn to drive in a Ferrari, that’s the most amazing way to learn,” Hedley tells me. “I think the manufacturers have twigged that if you learn to drive in, say, a little Ferrari, that young person may go on to drive a full-size Ferrari. That’s brand loyalty for life.”

Once Upon A Vine

Harlan Estate has been endowed cult status for its high demand, limited availability, and exceptional viticulture.

Expressing a sense of place through taste has perhaps never been more successfully or poetically achieved than by Harlan Estate. Some aficionados endow cult status to this California winemaker. Its high demand, limited availability, and exceptional viticulture command four-figure prices per bottle, to start. Identity is at the heart of this remarkable family-run vineyard, which has a robust, long-standing relationship with Nobu Hotels.

And what is that exceptional quality that makes wine from this estate so idolized? A rare and valuable element of the forest. “There’s a mindset that we should make wine that is more and more transparent of the place,” says Francois Vignaud, Harlan Estate Wine Director. In that sense, the forest is an essential part of the character. Without the trees and the fog playing fundamental roles, this estate’s extraordinary wine might simply be ordinary. “We know that from the early vintages of Harlan Estate until today, there’s a common thread in the identity of our wines, and it’s that forest element. Whether it’s with older vintages, of the forest floor, the mushroom type of aromas…or it’s the fresh aromatic herbs that you would find in more recent vintages. But there is a common thread of that forest influence in the wine.”

The visionary was William (Bill) Harlan. A California native, he spent years following his many passions and living firmly in the moment. After growing up in a modest environment, he won a scholarship to attend Berkeley in the late 1950s. As a student, he discovered a region about 45 minutes north where they make wine, and you could go and taste it for free, and, even better, they wouldn’t check your ID. He fell in love with the region and decided to make a documentary about it. “It is at this point that the romantic idea of one day having a vineyard started. Having a vineyard, and perhaps raising his family there,” explains Vignaud.

IN SPIRITS KNOW the

Other than being an avid gardener growing up, Bill didn’t have knowledge of the wine industry. But as someone who was endlessly eager and curious, that wasn’t going to stop him. As a few examples: He raced motorcycles, he flew planes and started a flying school; he hitchhiked the entire length of Africa; in the ’60s he was a pro poker player for three years. Throughout his young life of impetuousness and adventure, he retained the idea of one day having a wine-growing property. After the oil crash of ’73, with a couple of college friends, he built a real-estate company, Pacific Union, through which he eventually was able to capture the right piece of land.

“There is a pivotal moment in Bill Harlan’s life that helped crystalize the vision behind Harlan Estate, and it’s a trip that he took to France in 1980, in Bordeaux and Burgundy,” says Vignaud. “This trip really changed everything, because there, Bill discovered two major elements of inspiration for him. One, the fact that there are these great families who have taken care of their properties and passed it along for generations. For someone who lived in the moment, there was something incredibly inspiring, to have the ability of building something that will go way beyond your lifetime and possibly past other generations. And that’s where the idea of creating this family wine-growing estate grew. It ultimately led to building a 200-year plan, which is the idea that the property and the land can be passed along for generations. The second biggest learning and inspiration came from Burgundy, which is: the essence of location. If you want to produce a fine wine, location is absolutely everything.”

Returning to the Napa Valley in 1980, Harlan realized, by observing where most vineyards were planted, that no one was really going up in the hillsides and planting above the bench lands. It was a very important observation that motivated him to start looking for land on the hillsides, specifically in the western hills with east-facing slopes. This would allow the gentle morning sun to ripen the grapes, and by the time the hot afternoon sun came around, the vines would be shaded. “So you retain acidity in the fruit, freshness in the wine, and potential aging capacity for your wines,” Vignaud says.

Strategy was officially in action. He had seen that historically there was some great Cabernet produced on the bench lands between Yountville, Oakville, and Rutherford. And after four years of research and negotiations, in 1984 he purchased the first piece of forest on the hill to start Harlan Estate.

IN SPIRITS
KNOW the

It was, truly, a forest. “There were no vineyards, no infrastructure,” Vignaud says. “No roads, no electricity. It took a little bit of time to figure out exactly where to clear some of the forest and start planting the first vines. It ultimately led to, today, having 40 acres of vines planted on a 240-acre property.”

It is still largely forested, which is fundamental to the elite character of Harlan Estate wines. According to Vignaud, two unique aspects set Harlan Estate apart. One is, of course, its location, in the Western hillsides of the Oakville appellation. The other is how much forest surrounds and composes the property, and the degree to which that forest influences the overall environment, and ultimately the identity — the organoleptic character — of the wine itself.

“Over time, we’ve understood how much of the forest is impactful to the identity of our property,” Vignaud says. “The forest amplifies the effect of shading the vineyard. By nature, it brings a taller canopy and provides further shade. It’s a microclimate regulator: Every morning, you have the fog rolling into the Napa Valley from the San Pablo Bay, just south of Napa, and it tends to cover our vineyards in the morning. The trees play their role in capturing the moisture from the fog, and really conducting it into the ground, but also holding onto the fog for a little while longer. So we have the capacity of benefitting longer from that moisture provided by the fog, simply because the trees keep it.”

IN SPIRITS KNOW the 54

A vital element of its success is the abundance of life on the property. That creates a “virtuous circle of natural balance” of interaction among the forest, the vineyards, and the wildlife. “The species that grow on the property naturally influence what ultimately will fall on the ground, what will nourish the ground, and what will be pulled from the vines into the fruit and its character,” says Vignaud. “And there’s a lot of underbrush species that grow naturally, lots of aromatic plants — we’re talking about bay leaf, sage, rosemary — that grow naturally all around the property. Those tend to have that aromatic impact, ultimately, in the wine. So there’s that element of forest floor, in a sense, that you find as a thread of identity in the wine year after year.”

Cory Empting, Director of Wine Growing, who oversees viticulture and winemaking, and who is part of the estate’s second generation, refers to the work they do in the vineyard as “farming from bedrock to treetop.” This takes into consideration the entire environment, from the vines themselves to how much of the forest is part of the property’s overall footprint. Speaking of the second generation, Bill’s children, Will and Amanda, took over for their parents about two years ago. “There is this continuity of generations, and not just of the family, but also of the team that works with the land directly,” says Vignaud.

Self-sufficiency is increasingly a focus, especially with a view to the estate’s 200-year plan. For example, last year, 2022, is the first year that the entire property received no irrigation at all as they transition to dry farming. This helps the vines to be more self-sufficient in their own environment in the long run. “The vines have an incredible resilience, a capacity to even better express a sense of place through a little bit of that stress and struggle,” Vignaud says. “It’s been a very important aspect of our farming practices, to have a vineyard that is as self-sufficient as possible. But it goes way beyond that. It’s really having a vineyard and a team that is in tune with the environment and really positively interacting with the environment. So as many natural practices as we can have, we have implemented them and will continue to implement them.

“We see what we do as a constant dialogue between the natural environment and our team working with it. The wines are a reflection of this relationship between the land and our team,” Vignaud asserts. “We try to express a sense of place through wine. Because we know that between our land and our team, nobody else has it. For me, tasting Harlan Estate is being able to be transported to this very place, this corner of land we have in the western hills of Oakville, surrounded by this diverse forest and these hillsides. It’s really diving into the place and, of course, the time, the growing season, the mood that the property experiences.”

As the crown jewel of the awardwinning QUI Tequila line, the Nobu Rare 2008 Reserve delivers beautiful aromas of wood, tobacco, caramel, and vanilla, with a full and rich palate. Flavors of sweet oak, toasted almond, and a hint of maple, validated by the palette of Chef Nobu himself, give the Nobu Rare a long, buttery finish. Time Travel on the California Mille

IN Classics KNOW the 58

I have long dreamt of doing the historic Mille Miglia in Italy, not least because my idol, Sir. Stirling Moss won it back in 1955 in a Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing. The raw conditions, the intense passionate crowds, the unbelievable danger and the thrill of unlimited speed on public roads has always captivated me. Stirling once said to me “it was madness chap”, but as he said it, he gave a cheeky smile.

So a few weeks ago, when I was asked if I would like to participate in the California Mille, an official variant of the original race, I leapt at the chance. Chopard (the event sponsor) offered me their second entry in this years Hagerty run event, as long as I could find an eligible car. With my imagination swirling with nostalgia, I quickly asked my friends at RK Motorsport if I could borrow the perfect vehicle; their unrestored 1962 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster!

Fast forward to an early morning start in Berkeley, California, surrounded by the sound and smells of vintage automobiles. Believe me when I say I was ready to time travel. Now I must preface the rest of this narrative by saying that the California version promised a lot less risk taking and a little more luxury than its namesake, but the level of excitement and anticipation from everyone involved was still a tonic for adventure. And with my girlfriend Mailani as my navigator, we were committed to the task.

Our route took us all over Northern California, through once vibrant Gold Rush towns, enduring the searing heat of the open plains, and absorbing the sweet cooling air of the vineyards. The miles passed with almost hypnotic cadence. While the speed limits were mostly observed, we kept up a spirited pace on the twistiest country roads, through valleys resplendent in the super bloom, that made me feel like I was in the French Alps one moment and the Scottish Highlands the next. Holding onto the thin, wooden Nardi steering wheel, I felt a kinship to my hero, Stirling, as he too must have felt a similar connection to the car and roads. To drive a car with this period technology, you have to slow down to go fast. You must take your time with the gear shifts and rely on the massive torque of the Mercedes engine to power you out of the turns. You give extra space to brake down into a corner and allow the weight to transfer in the turn and settle before you hit the gas. It became rhythmic, familiar, and thanks to the amazing pre-race preparation by RK, she ran without a burp in every condition we threw at her.

And we weren’t alone in this enthusiastic reverie. At one point we were closely following a mad Italian up a narrow twisty pass, with vertical drops to one side. I could hear him flat on the gas all the way up, as he pushed his little 1953 Fiat 1100 with 40 BHP to the max! I am sure in his imagination, he was on the original Mille representing his country against the might of German engineering!

It was those moments that brought me the most reflection. Seeing cars from an era when the world was recovering from the greatest war, knowing that in their own way, the auto industry represented the hope individual nations felt about their future. How the skill and ingenuity of the workers created these incredible machines was inspirational to me. Every day, I would get to drive behind extraordinary cars, each unique in approach to design and engineering and each with a story to be told. Ferrari, Porsche, Fiat, Lancia, Mercedes, most over 70 years old and still running today, along roads that the earliest settlers of this amazing country took years to navigate.

Without question, this nostalgic automotive adventure came to its most memorable climax when we drove into Yosemite National Park early one morning. The record snowfall this past winter, combined with the early Spring warm temperatures, made one of the most beautiful places on earth look even more stunning than ever. Mailani and I ran the entire 1000 miles with the top down, and our perseverance paid off as we emerged into the amphitheater of one of nature’s most epic vistas! We parked up alongside McKeel and Soon Hagerty (our hosts), speechless, and to be honest, a little tearful at the timeless grandeur of our surroundings. As we all stood, humbled by nature, it struck me that our presence here is fleeting and our lives so complicated, that maybe the best therapy in the world is to break away and come face to face with something truly eternal.

After a lifetime of driving fast for a living, I rediscovered something invaluable over those 1000 miles; driving is still the freedom to go wherever you want, and that no matter your wealth or status, driving belongs to us all, and adventure is one fantastic wrong turn away.

Paired with a red leather strap, the Happy Sport beats to the rhythm of the Chopard 09.01-C movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Iconic since their invention by the Chopard workshops in 1976, five dancing diamonds stage their joyful flurry on this creation. Profoundly respectful of tradition, Chopard is always keen to associate its creations with local history and customs. The Year of the Rabbit offers the Maison an opportunity to interpret the luckiest animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar. Symbolizing strength and bravery, the rabbit is depicted seated, with its muzzle pointing towards 2 o'clock and its long ears raised. Its posture, like the stylised drawings on the animal's coat, lend it an elegance and a touch of mischief eminently suited to the identity of the Happy Sport collection.

Chopard L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Rabbit

A work of gold and lacquer, mechanics and craftsmanship, the L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Rabbit timepiece celebrates the advent of the year of the water rabbit through an original 88-piece series inspired by the Chinese zodiac calendar. The 39.5 mm-diameter case in ethical 18-carat rose gold frames a dial portraying the rabbit – a cautious and alert animal – and its relationship with the moon. Its dial graced with Urushi lacquer, gold powder and mother-of-pearl inlays is made by a Japanese artisan drawing on centuries of expertise. It brings a sense of both symbolism and prosperity to this coveted edition. Finally, its L.U.C 96.17-L in-house movement endowed with a 65-hour power reserve testifies to the watchmaking expertise of Chopard manufacturer's skilled artisans. Faithful to tradition and the preservation of craftsmanship, Chopard works with the finest Japanese artisans specialized in the traditional Maki-e lacquering technique. The 88 iterations intended for the L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Rabbit are produced by the workshops of the century-old company Yamada Heiando and crafted by master artist Minori Koizumi, a meticulous task requiring no less than 160 hours of work. In accordance with this refined ancestral technique, gold flakes – placed between layers of lacquer made from the sap of the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree – light up the background. The artisan’s attention was focused on each detail of the little scene so as to reveal its realism and lyrical beauty.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City, Serena Uziyel dove straight into the world of design, working with an impressive range of luxury brands like Moschino, Calvin Klein, and Donna Karan. Instantly attracted to shoe design, Uziyel was able to learn the extraordinary craft of shoemaking from craftsman Grandmaster Giuseppe Joseph Amolo. Devoted to traditional handcrafting techniques, Uziyel managed to meld modern design with classical training to produce an incredible line of accessories in 2019, titled Serena Uziyel. “One of the most precious values to me is heritage as it’s found in traditions and rituals,” explains Serena, “I have been raised in a family where women are powerful, inspiring, and courageous. Their integrity and moral values are exhilarating and promising. My grandaunts were milliners in the late Ottoman Empire and the beginning years of the Turkish Republic until the 1950s. They owned a small millinery shop behind the ancient streets of Beyoglu. After the loss of their father at a young age, they became entrepreneurs to support themselves and began crafting hats catered

to the elite society of Istanbul. These stories from my roots have always uplifted and inspired me.I find my inspiration everywhere. I am inspired by life and what life has brought me to this day, mainly through history, my roots, and the women in my family.” Aiming to become a strong female voice in the world of accessory design, Uziyel’s hands-on process carries on ancient craftsman techniques through a fresh, modern lens. Since the launch of her brand, Serena has faced many challenges, including a 1.5-year preparation process and the breakdown of the global supply chain during the pandemic.

“During the pandemic, we launched our Fiocco Moccasin initiative in support of the World Health Organization,” says Serena, “where we donated 100% of proceeds from a specific silhouette on our website. This initiative received social media support from Kate Bosworth and Jamie Lee Curtis, which we truly appreciated.” Willing to learn and grow in the face of adversity, the Serena Uziyel brand has flourished, designed for the modern woman with a sense of discovery, and an appreciation for craftsmanship, quality, and uniqueness.

The latest collection draws inspiration from the mysteries of nature, including delicate details like embroidered metal-thread flowers. Serena names the Sienna as her favorite piece from the new styles, a design inspired by the layered jewelry of Uziyel’s grandmother.

“When sketching, I was taken back to a time when my grandmother’s jewelry box was like a book of short stories on travel and romance,” Serene reminisces. “Each piece had a story that she would recall as she layered the memories on each day, adornments that are both beautiful and nostalgic. Sienna is a modern interpretation of these layers, each delicate and different when worn together, and has a lasting impact.” While each piece is as beautiful as it is timeless, Serena ensures that every style from her collection is extraordinarily unique, incorporating handcrafting methods in each of her designs. “I love working with my hands, touching the materials, feeling the textures, and surfaces, and developing different techniques,” she explains. “While the products made with traditional handicrafts reflect historical accumulation, the emotion passes to the owner of the product in the most effective way. We offer all of our customers a unique/unidentical pair of shoes/ bags that are created with high-quality materials and craftsmanship. In such mechanized and technologically intertwined times, we push the boundaries a little bit more each time, modernizing and bringing to life many different techniques created by hand.”

Her unwavering dedication to the traditional craft has led Serena to her proudest moment as a designer, the approval of her longtime mentor. “Through my training with Giuseppe, I was given the opportunity to experiment with every phase of the shoemaking process,” Serena recounts. “Giuseppe always said “a shoe is to be put on your feet and not under your arm,” meaning that a shoe should be aesthetically appealing but it must also be comfortable- he taught me the importance of combining aesthetics with comfort. He had a serious personality but he also knew how to relish in the joyful moments of life as well. One of the most important things that I learned from Giuseppe is that shoe design and shoe making is much harder than it looks, you need to give the most of yourself to build a unique shoe. Even though he was tough, he took me under his wing and taught me every aspect of shoemaking. I am forever grateful for his guidance and kindness. I remember the day I crafted my first shoe and showed it to him, it was an intimidating moment for me, and I could not initially understand from his facial expressions if he liked it or not. He turned the shoes over and over, and then asked me to try them on and walk; only then did he nod and say “Bravo” in Italian. Thankfully he liked them, which was a great relief.”

With a goal for Serena Uziyel to become a staple in each new customer’s wardrobe every season, Uziyel is well on her way with the support of some of the world’s top fashion platforms. Devoted to forging intimate connections with customers and building the Serena Uziyel family, Serena aims to reach as many inspiring women around the world as possible, recently announcing a collaboration with talented female artisans in Turkey. “It is valuable and important for me that these local female artisans are part of the creation,” she explains, “we bring a modern perspective to traditional craftsmanship while also contributing to women's employment by teaching our highly skilled women the ancient techniques with a new perspective.”

Bringing a unique story and fresh new take on the women’s accessory world, Serena Uziyel is truly special, embracing classic tradition while adapting to modern life - all while cherishing exceptional quality above all.

Born in Poland, Stefanowski frequently spends his time traveling to Europe for business, and when abroad, he enjoys staying at Nobu Hotel Warsaw. The extravagant hotel seamlessly blends beautiful experiences in one impeccable location for visitors. Breathtaking art-deco found in the early 20th century historical building combines with a stunning new wing. With 116-rooms and expansive meeting and event spaces, the alluring hotel is a perfect place for accommodations and the entrepreneur’s business meetings.

Stefanowski’s Deluxe Crystal Vodka is crafted from the purest water with selected ingredients of wheat and rye cereals. Their combination creates a soft, delicate taste with a subtly perceptible malt. To emphasize the grand character of the vodka, the company distills ten times and then proceeds with five-fold filtration by using coconut shells to activate carbon to efficiently absorb any impurities with micropore molecules. Then crystal and amber are aligned to enhance purity. Then a third stage takes 24k gold and real diamonds to enhance the ultimate drinking experience. The filtration process is repeated twice, and the goal is flawless purity of the vodka. To obtain the desired result, each filtration process must last two years.

Stefanowski and his vision have dominated the field with this brilliant technique that outshines all rivals and illuminates the road on this entrepreneur’s successful business journey.

The artist has been involved in about 100 collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad. As a creator he focuses on existential problems and references his personal experiences to elaborate the pieces.

Globally renowned for his captivating drawings and groundbreaking painting techniques, the proud artist believes that human existence is complete when people’s attitudes towards tradition, culture and religion are appreciated. Bak consistently focuses on large scale virtuoso graphic matter created on medium density fiberboards. The overall work relates to current events, mythological themes, spontaneity, and the act of self-expression.

While many of the polychromo installations he co-authored reside in iconic palaces and churches throughout his homeland of Poland, Bak is most looking forward to checking out the brand new Nobu Hotel Sevilla, where modern luxury and historic charm combine to create a unique and unforgettable experience. Situated in the vibrant and colorful Plaza San Francisco, the hotel provides the perfect base to explore the Andalusian capital’s intoxicating mix of Mudéjar palaces, baroque churches and winding medieval lanes.

INITIO Parfums has a very cool concept. The brand, which was launched at the Cannes Film Festival, is the result of years of intensive research. The Latin word “initio” means “from the beginning,” and, with its collection of seven fragrances, the brand aims to return to the origins of perfume. With INITIO, perfume is used as an object of power. The brand’s aim is to educate people

on the animalistic potency of perfume and its role as an invisible pheromonal force. INITIO returns the magic to perfumery, where the only limit is one’s imagination. Combine the lines Absolutes with Magnetic Blends on your skin to create a mixed scent that is entirely personal. Fellas, don’t be shy! We’re here to remove the stigma - men should visit the spa

WORDS by Jennifer Bradley Franklin
106

“I love spas,” says travel journalist and content creator Travis Levius, who recently enjoyed a luxurious full-body massage at Nobu London Portman Square's Wellness Center. “It's one of very few places where you're guaranteed to look and feel better going out after coming in.”

If visions of men indulging in all manner of treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate seems foreign, consider that the latest study from the International Spa Association (ISPA) shows that nearly 50% of spa-goers in the United States

are male, up from less than 30% in 2009. While most treatments can be as effective for both male and female spa visitors, spas are increasingly tailoring treatments for more masculine sensibilities and to address the unique rigors and stresses of modern life. For spa novices, there’s no better time to take the plunge than while traveling. “Spa visits while traveling add a nice reset to my often hectic day-to-day,” Levius says. “I seek spas to help me relax, add some balance to my on-the-go itineraries and reduce anxiety.” Here are some services to add to your travel spa bucket list.

Man, Handled

At the spa at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, guests can book a head, neck and shoulders massage, complete with hydrating, scented oils kneaded into the connective tissues of the upper body. It’s the perfect foil to sitting at a computer or the dreaded “text neck.” The 60-minute men’s facial by German celebrity aesthetics practitioner Dr. Barbara Sturm is customized to the unique needs of masculine skin and is designed to cleanse, tone, soothe and hydrate skin, particularly addressing the irritation that can come with shaving.

107

Say Spa…..ahhh

Make a day of it at the 21,000-square-foot Pearl Spa at Nobu Hotel Marrakech. It’s easy to do, thanks to grand Moroccan hammams, steam baths, saunas, a heated indoor pool, relaxation areas and a gym with state-of-the-art workout equipment. Book a 90-minute body ritual of gentle exfoliation, a body wrap, invigorating scalp massage and a customized aromatherapy massage. It’s the perfect pick-me-up while traveling.

Essential Relaxation

The 22,000-square-foot Esencia Wellness Spa at Nobu Hotel Miami Beach offers hotel guests complimentary access to the extensive wellness offerings on site, including a hydrotherapy circuit with plunge pools, saunas, whirlpools and aromatherapy showers, as well as a relaxation lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. Book a 50 or 80-minute “Zen CBD” massage using oil infused with six herbs, including ginger and arnica, designed to relieve pain and promote relaxation. For some variety, choose one of three “Essense of Omakase” experiences, each of which includes a spa amenity, 50-minute treatment, an enhancement to heighten the experience and a refreshment.

Dream a Little Dream

The Nobu Hotel City of Dreams Manila in the Philippines’ bustling capital city, creates a serene oasis complete with a full-service spa. Let the expert therapists knead out your travel-induced knots in a hot stone massage using warmed smooth basalt stones. Or, spring for an aptly titled “businessman facial.” The 1 hour and 15-minute treatment uses Doctor Babor Men’s products, made with energizing ginseng, taurine and hops to perk up dull skin, with an algae peel-off mask and a scalp massage.

Luxury for the Long Run

You don’t have to be running the annual London Marathon to enjoy a marathon massage at the spa at Nobu Hotel London Shoreditch. Whether you’ve put in 26.2 miles or have just spent the day dashing around the city, a 60 or 90-minute deep tissue massage using stimulating ho-leaf and rosemary muscle melt essential oils, hot stones and warm steam towels is an ideal way to unwind. Add on a five element foot soak in relaxing and detoxifying Himalayan salts and an acupressure foot massage, and you’ll be ready to face whatever your time in England’s capital city holds.

Artful Experience

All of the Nobu Hotels worldwide bring the calming principles of Japanese wellness to their guests. Now, both Nobu Ryokan Malibu and Nobu Hotel Palo Alto have introduced traditional Japanese onsen bathing rituals in new “Art of Bathing” packages. As a vital part of Buddhist purification rituals, onsen dates back to the sixth century and centers on the belief that participants can shed impurities and revive the soul. Spa guests at both California properties include Japanese snacks, custom bath salts with relaxing essential oils, access to a deep teak onsen soaking tub set to jawdropping views and more. Such a set up makes holding onto stress nearly impossible.

Make the Most of It

For spa newbies, taking time to unwind in a spa setting can feel foreign. “Remind yourself that at the end of a spa visit, you'll feel refreshed and ready to tackle life's daily challenges with better ease,” says Levius. His advice? “Take a breath, turn off those electronics, and treat yourself to some well-deserved restoration.”

Santorini

On Location

Santorini is one of the most sought-after islands to visit in the Cyclades Islands of Greece. The dramatic landscape is filled with rocky promotories, undulating hills, and whitewashed villages cascading down the cliff sides. While it’s touristy, it’s full of magical sunsets and one-of-a-kind beaches. It’s also home to fresh seafood, Greek wines made from ancient vines, and superb service. Once you drop your bags at Nobu Hotel Santorini, here is what to do and where to go on the island.

Selene

Fine Greek dining restaurant Selene has been an island mainstay since 1986. Now part of the Greekowned hotel Katikies Garden, renowned chef Ettore Botrini has taken over Selene’s kitchen and is furthering its legacy as a prime example of fine dining on Santorini. Not only are the dishes artfully plated and use local ingredients, but the restaurant’s setting is romantic and historic. It is located in an 18th-century monastery and also has a wine cave with the most fabulous Greek varietals.

This 100-year-old taverna in Firostefani first opened in 1922 and is run by the grandson of the restaurant’s founder. Aktaion’s original mission is still true today: Serving customers delicious Santorinian dishes with genuine Greek hospitality. The simple restaurant setting, with signature Grecian architecture, overlooks the ocean. We recommend ordering skordomakarona or moussaka paired with a crisp glass of wine from one of the island’s historic vineyards while watching the orange sunset.

Domaine Sigalas

Santorini’s most well-known indigenous grapes include Assyrtiko, Aidani, and Mavrotragano— and Domaine Sigalas just outside of Oía produces some of the best, thanks to its pioneering winemaker, Paris Sigalas. He pairs technical prowess and innovation with the ancient winegrowing traditions on the island resulting in elevated wines. Not to mention, the vineyard embodies Santorini’s dreaminess. The winery offers a variety of tastings so you can try all of the delicious wines the vineyard has to offer— plus the spirit they produce, Domaine Sigalas Tsipouro.

Ammoudi Bay

This picturesque bay within Santorini’s capital Oía is accessed either by boat or by foot, via steep (but walkable) stone steps that guide you down a volcanic cliff from the city to the water. The turquoise bay is brimming with local seafood restaurants, a small port, and little shops. There is also a popular ledge to jump off and swim in the salty sea before enjoying fresh octopus and traditional horiatiki salad.

Akrotiri Village

Called the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” Akrotiri Village is a Bronze Age prehistoric settlement and one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece. It was eradicated by a volcanic eruption and is revered for how advanced it was for its time. The buildings that are preserved show multiple stories, impressive masonry, and a sophisticated drainage system. Historians believe that this village was the inspiration for Plato’s city of Atlantis.

Gavalas Winery

This family-owned winery in the popular winemaking region of Santorini called Megalochori is known for its Assyrtiko, Aidani, Mandilaria, and Mavrotragano, a Greek dessert wine. Gavalas is a fifth-generation winery, the only winery in Santorini that vinifies indigenous rare varieties of Voudomato and Katsano. Tastings include the whole range of wines and a tour of the winemaking areas, where the sommeliers and enologists will walk you through the specific process.

Charter a boat—a luxury catamaran, yacht, speedboat, or sailing boat—with Santorini Yacht Charters for a half or full day exploring the rocky island. Hiking Red Beach

Santorini’s undulating landscape is best explored by foot, and the island has several hikes that will help you take it all in. For adventure lovers, the Nea Kameni volcano hike is one of the best. It’s a hike on the largest of two uninhabited volcanic islands in the center of Santorni’s caldera. Another popular route is hiking from Fira to Oía, a lengthy hike along the edge of the caldera. We also recommend Imerovigli, where you can visit Skaros Rock, see many churches, and hike between ancient sites.

This volcanic sand beach is a sight to behold. It’s Santorini’s most famous and beautiful beaches and nearby the ancient site of Akrotiri, for those who want to combine activities in one day. The beach’s sand has red and black pulverized volcanic rock that many say resembles Mars. When swimming in the water, there are warm streams of water from the underground thermal springs.

A millennia of history and culture, plus refined luxury sensibilities, make Marrakech a jewel in Africa’s crown.

Words by Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Founded in 1062, Marrakech has been a political, cultural and economic center for centuries. The Red City, so dubbed because of the red-orange clay favored in the construction of buildings and the city’s walls, is now a prime destination for luxury, thanks to its proliferation of palaces, palatial spas and traditional hammams, gardens, renowned restaurants, stunning places of worship, stately riads and a world-famous medina, named a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. Discriminating travelers looking

for an elegantly designed abode will find it at the Nobu Hotel Marrakech, opened in January. The 71-key, all-suite property—Nobu’s first in Africa— boasts spectacular views of the Koutoubia Mosque and the arresting Atlas Mountains, in addition to a circular rooftop pool and the brand founder’s eponymous signature sushi restaurant. No matter where your Marrakech explorations take you, a serene oasis at Nobu awaits. Here are just a few of the must-visit Moroccan treasures you’ll want to explore.

Fashion Lover

The souks, or markets, of Marrakech are among the most famous in the world, and it’s easy to get lost wandering the labyrinthine streets and alleyways lined with stalls selling shimmering lanterns in hammered copper and brass, leather goods, brightly colored glassware, fragrant spices, pashminas, jewelry, perfume and more. Haggling with hawkers, many of whom operate stalls that have been in their families for generations, is a rite of passage for visitors. If you’re on the hunt for one the city’s most famous wares, hand-made carpets, head to Palais Saadien, for a dizzying array of Arab and Berber rugs. Another Moroccan tradition, caftans, gets a modern update at AYA, where designer Nawal El Hariti creates custom wearables and whose client list includes celebrities from Queen Consort Camilla of the United Kingdom to Sarah Jessica Parker. Visit an exemplar of slow fashion at Marrakshi Life, where you can watch the team of artisans weave fabrics in the traditional way as they create gender-neutral tunics, caftans, pants and more. Time-honored craftsmanship meets modern style at Nasire Bags, where brightly colored leather doubles as functional artwork in the form of purses, laptop cases and chic duffles.

184

Zen Seeker

If you need a retreat from the bustling souks and frenetic streets, take a walk in one of Marrakech's renowned gardens. Jardin Majorelle, the onehectare botanical and architectural masterpiece, is one of Morocco’s most noteworthy. Enclosed by outer walls, French painter Jacques Majorelle began creating its winding paths, vibrantly hued buildings in both Moorish and Art Deco styles and exotic plants in 1922. In 1980, French fashion visionary Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé acquired the property to save it from developers. Now, the gardens (under new ownership) are as beautiful as ever. You might even find a meditative moment in one of the city’s more than 140 horsedrawn carriages, a tradition that dates more than a century. As the distinctive green vehicles from another era stride through the old town, it’s a wonderfully chill way to appreciate the history all around you. End your pursuit of relaxation with a visit to Nobu’s nearly 22,000-square-foot Pearl Spa, where a heated indoor pool, palatial relaxation areas, hammams, jacuzzis, steam baths, saunas and much more set the scene for the ultimate zen experience. Book a signature treatment, inspired by Japanese traditions, and feel any stress melt away.

Foodie

Resist the temptation to pigeonhole Marrakech’s dining scene into just the traditional. Of course, you should make finding a flawless tangia—often sheep’s meat with fragrant spices tucked in a terracotta urn and cooked on a hammam’s coals and not to be confused with tagine—a priority, but there’s so much more to explore. For a chic meal, find a lunchtime table on the rooftop overlooking the media at L’mida , where kefta meatballs, lentils croquettes and beet and orange blossom salad are signatures. Make dinner reservations at NOMAD, where the culinary team leverages intensely local ingredients—think argan oil, Atlas Mountain honey and hyper-fresh produce—to create modern Moroccan fare. Don’t sleep on shaved cauliflower salad with herbs, strawberries, toasted almonds and caramelized onions; Agadir calamari with harissa, ginger and braised eggplant; and hibiscus flower ice cream. End a culinary tour with the city’s most inventive cocktails at Baromètre Marrakech. Founded by the Hadni brothers, the speakeasy dedicated to mixology excellence delivers with dramatic, avant garde drink presentations using traditional spices and herbs. You can’t go wrong with any bartender recommendation, but the signature Marrakech Market is an ideal expression of the terroir.

Art Aficionado

The city itself is a work of art, with its Menara Airport being called “one of the most beautiful airports in the world” to its historic buildings infused with Berber-Arab, French and Andalusian influences. Make time to see the Koutoubia Mosque. Built in the 12th century, its minaret towers 253 feet in the air. Though non-Muslims are not permitted to enter, a walk around the perimeter is awe-inspiring, particularly during the melodic call to prayer. For a historical deep dive, visit Dar Si Said, the city’s oldest museum where you’ll find age-old carpets and rural rugs, riders’ costumes, brocade, jewelry, pottery, ceramics, woodwork and more, most focused on the region surrounding Marrakech. Combine your artfocused exploration with another garden stroll at Anima, a short drive outside the city. Developed by Austrian universalist artist André Heller, the fiveacre botanical park is connected by shaded paths and punctuated with whimsical pavilions, ponds and vibrant, arresting works of art. The park’s name comes from the Jungian concept of connecting with the spirit, something facilitated by the stunning environs, a partnership between nature and artist.

Outdoor Adventurer

Morocco’s sub-tropical climate, with hot summers, mild winters and mostly dry days make it a mecca for varied outdoor activities. The country is a prime destination for horseback riding enthusiasts, and Marrakech has myriad schools catering to riders from novices to experts. Book a lesson at Marrakech Horse Club, Domaine Équestre La Palmeraie or Charly Jumper. Craving more variety? Local adventure tour operator Dunes & Deserts has something to suit just about any adventurous personality. Depending on your preference, you may choose a cycling tour through the wadis and villages in the nearby Jbilets Desert, a ride through the Agafay Stone Desert’s dunelike hills on a quad (or four-wheeler), or speed through the desert in a powerful Japanese Yamaha Wolverine with jaw-dropping views of the Atlas Mountains beyond. Looking for a more traditional mode of transportation? Go for a guided camel ride to the Agafay oasis.

Nobu Hotels Magazine Celebrates The Launch Of Miami Sushi Club With Chef Nobu Matsuhisa

Marking the one-year anniversary of Nobu Hotels Magazine, we kicked off Formula 1 weekend alongside Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Chris Stamp to launch Miami Sushi Club - with a night we won’t soon forget.

Hosted at the exceptional Nobu Restaurant Miami, VIP guests gathered for an evening of laughter, luxury, and truly fabulous food. Teaming up with McLaren Automotive, we celebrated in style as guests were treated to a VIP look at some exceptional McLaren vehicles before indulging in an evening to remember. We sipped on vibrant craft cocktails from Brother’s Bond Bourbon, and enjoyed the company of friends new and old as we took in the unmatched Miami sunset from the tropical oasis of Nobu’s outdoor patio. Decorated with enchanting florals and an exclusive look at Chris Stamp’s latest Miami Sushi Club collection, guests enjoyed a private dinner alongside Amalgam Collection’s detailed model car replicas signed by McLaren driver Lando Norris and CEO Zak Brown. Only 500 pieces were ever made of the 1:18 scale model replicating Lando Norris’s 2021 Monco car in the famous Gulf livery that garnered him and McLaren a podium finish. We were lucky enough to dine with three that will be soon auctioned off!

With extraordinary accents from Italian jewelry house Buccellati, no detail was overlooked, and guests enjoyed exceptional barware, floral vases, and displays of some of the designer’s most spectacular pieces (along with the chance to chat with creative director Lucrezia Bucellati herself). With guests like Victor Cruz, Paul Wesley, Michael Leiters, and Nic Brown in attendance, we embraced the Miami magic with a seven-course bespoke menu highlighting everyone’s Nobu favorites. Working alongside Brother’s Bond Bourbon to create the perfect cocktail pairing for each dish, guests sipped on inventive blends that added new depth to timeless classics. From a vibrant mix of yuzu and blackberry served alongside the Black Cod with Miso, to the refreshing balance of cucumber and lime with the Salmon Nashi and Yellowtail Jalapeño, each course offered something truly special, and it’s safe to say this was a Nobu meal unlike any other. Partnering with Apheta and Northern Trust, we worked alongside Chef Nobu Matsuhisa himself to host a celebration worthy of one of Miami’s most prestigious weekends. Treated to exclusive Miami Sushi Club styles, bottles of Brother’s Bond Bourbon signed by co-founder Paul Welsey, and beautiful accessories from Buccellati, every element of the evening embraced the finer things in life. A oneof–kind large-format Fittipaldi-signed art silkscreen print from artist Alan Thornton was on display, as well as glittering jewels, and formidable cars from Amalgam collection, we celebrated the city to its fullest - the perfect way to ring in the launch of the brand-new Miami Sushi Club.
