We see that in the past, fashion was about quality vs quantity. A nice wool suit would need to be of exceptional quality to be handed down from generation to generation and still look great and stand the test of time. Of course, things do eventually have to be replaced with new ones and we go with the same cyclical scenario. There are of course many reasons for the frugality of this example which include warstricken poverty caused by WW1 & WW2 and other factors yet good taste has never been about affordability. We know that adversity gives birth to innovation, and it is no different than fashion. In the days of the great wars, we see the birth of Quiet Luxury. These simple and elegant styles of dressing with minimal branding are all the basis of the Quiet Luxury aesthetic. Often made of only exceptional luxurious fabrics like fine Egyptian cotton, cashmere yarns, and incredibly supple silks. Quiet Luxury is more of a state of mind for style than a fashion trend.

The Quiet Luxury style has become a style synonymous with wealth and power, made famous by TV shows such as Succession There are fashion brands that focus specifically on this type of aesthetic such as Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Eleventy and Zegna to name a few. These brands don't rely on their logos or branding to sell their products or aesthetics, they simply rely on their quality and materials to make their point. Let’s be clear, fashion & style are two different things. Style is how I like to wear the hem of my denim or dress trousers, how I style my hair, or wear my beard. All these style factors have nothing to do with Fashion. Fashion on the other hand is something you buy. Unlike style, it's not something you can be born with or develop in your younger years.

People who have the Quiet Luxury aesthetic most likely are not aware that they possess such a defined style because they have been dressing in such fashion for their whole lives. In many cases, people that adopt such a style after embracing an opposite aesthetic are simply doing it to not show off their wealth and humble their appearance per se hence the term quiet.

The Quiet Luxury is simply a style of vestige certain people are accustomed to and or embraced by individuals who don't like to be loud about the designers they choose to wear on their bodies. Lacy Nicole is a name that people are hearing more and more often as of late. Lacy has a successful podcast about overcoming trauma called “Shame to Sparkle'' and she has recently launched a foundation by the same name. The Shame to Sparkle Foundation’s primary focus is gathering resources for mental health, and advocacy for those struggling with trauma and PTSD.

In today’s fast-paced world, the importance of mental health awareness cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to addressing trauma. Unresolved trauma can have a profound impact on various aspects of life affecting relationships, work, and overall well-being. It’s crucial to remember that acknowledging and addressing trauma is a step towards healing and growth.

Lacy is well-versed in trauma and hardships herself. As a child, she had a pretty traumatic upbringing. She had to take on a parent role at an age far too young for that responsibility and had a lot of issues derived from this. In her 20s, she experienced another trauma and ultimately following that, she was diagnosed with seven autoimmune diseases. She finally took charge of her healing journey and started speaking on victimadvocate panels. This ultimately birthed the creation of Shame To Sparkle Foundation which is primarily rooted in PTSD & trauma advocacy.

According to the Mental Health Americas report, over 4 million Americans have a mental health condition. Yet, there are still stigmas about mental illness. In response to this, Lacy said “I think society has a large impact on the stigmas. Even speaking publicly today; I hesitate because many attach labels of being a ‘victim.’ I believe the most courageous action you can take, when you are ready; is to share your truth and to hopefully help others or at the very least to validate yourself.” Honesty and openness is a major key to unlocking your freedom and health.

John Greer grew up in Newport Beach and is now the GM of the hottest restaurant in town. If anyone knows the ins and outs of Southern California, it’s this man. NOBLEMAN asked him some questions with the goal of helping you get to know this amazing man and also, get the most out of the amazing coastal city of Newport Beach. If you are a year-round local or just visiting the historic beach town, NOBLEMAN and John Greer have got you covered.

What inspired you to join the Nobu team in Newport Beach, and what do you love most about this coastal city? I grew up back and forth between San Diego and Newport Beach. While in my 10th year working at Nobu San Diego, my manager approached me about my time in Newport Beach. She said we were opening a brand new location and my name had come up as someone who may be a perfect fit to help open a location. My answer was obvious. What better reason to return to Newport Beach than to open a Nobu restaurant.

Newport Beach is known for its stunning beaches. Do you have a favorite spot to relax by the ocean? With so much coastline, there are so many beautiful places to choose from, but my personal favorite spot would have to be little Corona Beach in Corona Del Mar. Its stunning views while walking down to the beach and its seclusion once you arrive have made it my favorite spot since I was a kid.

Can you share some of your favorite dishes from Nobu Newport Beach's menu and the best wine or cocktail pairings for them?

My two favorite dishes would have to be our

signature Yellowtail sashimi with Jalapeño and our grilled lamb chops with Karashi-su-miso. For the yellowtail, I would pair it with our Jaded martini. The cucumber in the drink would cool off any heat present in the jalapeño, and the sweet agave flavors from the Casamigos Reposado would balance out the acidity and tart from the yuzu citrus sauce. For the lamb, our Matsuhisa Cabernet would be the one wine by the glass that could hold up to the gaminess of the lamb and the earthiness of the mustard miso sauce.

Is there something off the menu or a secret item that guests can order at Nobu? Our chefs are always creating special off-the-menu items. My personal favorite is definitely our Toro Carpaccio, with truffled soy, shaved fresh truffle, and a tofu creme fraiche. This is also a favorite for our Newport Beach regulars.

Newport Beach offers a diverse culinary scene. What's your go-to restaurant (other than Nobu) for a memorable meal? There are so many great new places, but for my personal favorite, you’ve got to head a little outside of Newport. Himizu Modern Dining on Brookhurst Street is my go-to any day of the week. They’ve got Japanese BBQ, innovative sashimi dishes, and a really cool vibe as soon as you walk in.

favorite spot has got to be Breakfast Republic. Great breakfast dishes and an awesome drink menu, and I love sitting on their patio counter facing the street and enjoying the weather.

What is your favorite outdoor activity in Newport Beach? Over the last few years, I’ve really gotten into golfing. There are so many courses in the area to choose from. Some offer great ocean views, and others let you explore the backcountry of Orange County. I’ve been lucky to be able to play some of the best courses in the area, but that doesn’t mean I’ve gotten any better. Still, a blessing to live in a place where I can play almost every day of the year.

Where would you suggest guests go for a fun night out after dining at Nobu? It really depends on the guest and what type of experience they are looking for. If they just finished a nice meal upstairs, and are looking for something more chill, I would recommend the rooftop bar at Lido House Hotel, but if they had drinks in our bar and lounge and are looking to continue the party, I would recommend heading to a place like Country Club where they would find the awesome DJ group Beat Ventriloquists (who also spin at Nobu on the weekends).

Are there any hidden gems or lesser-known places in Newport Beach that you think visitors should explore? Pearson’s Port is a family-owned fish market located in the back bay, just under a bridge that brings PCH across the bay. They always have the freshest fish that was caught earlier that day and my personal favorite, the Spot Prawns. It’s just such a cool and unique place to shop for dinner. My family has been going there for years.

What's your favorite boutique or store for men’s shopping? I don’t go shopping often, but when I do it’s usually something to make me look good on the job. My go-to is David August. He makes custom-fitted suits and casual wear

for men. I’ve known David since I was a little kid when my dad was getting suits from him. Their showroom is amazing and you’re treated like a VIP whenever you step in. Kind of the same experience we like to offer at Nobu Newport Beach.

How do you ensure guests have an authentic Newport Beach experience when they dine at your restaurant? Beach has a mixture of back Beach vibes with a sexy classiness that you don’t find in too many other places. That is hard to replicate in a restaurant setting where you need to combine service, food, and ambiance. I think we do a great job at Nobu of hitting all those marks. You can be at the beach or out on the boat, and within minutes be having a cocktail in our bar and lounge while enjoying the music being

ABOUT THE DRINK

This cocktail, like so many others, is the love child of two of my all-time favorite cocktails: A Boulevardier and a Gold Rush. Both of which use Bourbon as their base spirit, however, I’ve taken the Boulevardier’s combination of bitter Italian Amaro and rich Vermouth di Torino, then combined it with the sharpness of fresh lemon juice, and floral sweetness of the honey – inspired by a Gold Rush cocktail.

For me, Amaro is the spirit of Fall. It’s rich, herbaceous, spicy bitterness encapsulates autumnal flavors and adds complexity to cocktails. The most famous example, Campari, is internationally recognized but Amaro is incredibly diverse and each region in Italy has its own recipes, which are usually closely guarded family secrets. Amaro Averna was the invention of Salvatore Averna, a notable draper in Caltanissetta, Sicily – who was gifted the recipe for a bitter-sweet elixir from local monks in 1868.

This cocktail is versatile, a refreshing bitter-sweet aperitif cocktail suitable for pre-dinner or a warming digestif, by the fireside, in the fall evenings.

Aromatic Bitters, such as Angostura

Shake all ingredients over ice for about 6 seconds, until properly chilled, then double strain the cocktail into a rocks glass with fresh ice and garnish with orange peel, expressed over the drink.

Honey adds a vibrant floral sweetness to cocktails but it’s viscosity makes it challenging to incorporate properly in

drinks, so I find it best to make a syrup by mixing the honey with warm water to make it easier to work with. Mix 1 cup of honey with ½ cup of hot water, and stir until all the honey is dissolved. Store in a sterile bottle for up to a month in the fridge.

Well, this dream can become a reality - it’s called AmaWaterways river cruise. Our particular river cruise and land adventure was called “Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps,” where we visited 5 different countries in 10 days: The Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy (as a post-cruise land package) with the help of our ship the “AmaMora”. Life doesn’t get much better than this. The superb service begins before you even set foot on the sleek AmaWaterways ship. My knowledgeable travel consultant Dave Levine helped plan our luxurious journey down to every detail. AmaWaterways included a choice of 20 different excursions during our 7-night cruise making it easy to tailor the cruise to your personal preferences: whether you desire more laid-back times, a fitness-oriented activity, something family-friendly; or even a group tour where you ride a bicycle through three different countries in a single day! The cruise feels mostly designed for adults, yet is kid and family-friendly. We were traveling with our three boys and we all had the times of our lives. I will always cherish swimming in the pool as we floated down the Rhine with castles on either side of us. Exploring the world and different countries is amazing, but to do it on a luxury riverboat is a whole new level.

AmaWaterways carries a fleet of 25 bikes on board their ships and offers escorted hiking and biking tours to all guests but on our cruise there's a large group from an American cycling club so there were even more shore excursions offered to suit their needs. This is a theme of the voyage: the clients’ every wish and whim is expertly catered to.

Day one begins in Amsterdam, “the Venice of the North.” We meet our Cruise Manager Marc Coll (“Marc with a C”), an incredibly vivacious, charming, and intelligent individual. A great leader affects the whole atmosphere of any situation, and we are fortunate to have an extremely experienced and charismatic tour guide at the proverbial helm. Just outside Amsterdam, we spend the morning visiting windmills, strolling through nature, and watching cheese, clogs, and chocolate get made (not all at the same time, although that would be a wild sight to behold). In the second half of our initial day, we toured through the city via canal boat - a mini cruise before embarking on our river cruise aboard the lovely 156-passenger AmaMora. There’s plenty of free time for shopping and dining. One never feels rushed during shore excursions.

We are welcomed on board the ship for our orientation talk and a fantastic welcome dinner. I notice little details that make the whole experience feel special: like each female being handed a rose as she steps on board, gifts in our room, and snacks and beverages available at all times. We meet most of the staff, and we count an astounding 59 crew members for 122 passengers traveling with us this particular week. Spoiled, we will be.

The next few days we sail along the Rhine through picturesque Germany. The Rhine River is a scenic waterway that winds through several countries in Europe, including Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Known for its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and historic castles, the Rhine River offers a romantic and fun experience for visitors. The Rhine River is often considered one of the most romantic rivers in the world. Its serene and scenic beauty creates a perfect backdrop for couples to enjoy a romantic getaway, or families to share the adventure of a lifetime. Our cruise scenery was filled with lush vineyards, rolling hills, picturesque villages, and of course many of the promised castles. Sunset views over the river were particularly enchanting, as the golden hues reflected off the water, creating a magical ambiance.

I will always cherish swimming in the pool as we floated down the Rhine with castles on either side of us. Exploring the world and different countries is amazing, but to do it on a luxury riverboat is a whole new level.

The first German city we visited was Cologne, where we took a city tour, and then in our own free time decided to walk up all 533 steps to the top of the world-famous Cologne Cathedral. The view was worth the burn! We then experienced the elegant shop where cologne and perfume are reported to have first been invented. Of course we bought a bottle, and our boys have proudly worn their cologne every day since. We end the day with a tour of the Lindt chocolate factory. It was a day full of delicious smells and tastes. The next morning we cruised through the Rhine Gorge with the ruins of 40 castles perched along its banks. This was perhaps my favorite day. Doug and the boys and I all sat on our river boat, deciding which castle we would want to live in and dreaming about what life would have been like back in time. Our riverboat had German music playing and pretzels being served, adding to the backdrop of an unforgettable memory.

Our next stop was Rüdesheim, which is a quaint village of almost a Disneyland version of Germany, where everything is perfect and every day is Christmas. One of the highlights is a gondola ride to the top of a picturesque mountain, affording spectacular views of the whole surrounding valley. Our boys headed back to the boat for dinner, while Doug and I decided to try the local Rüdesheim coffee, which was accompanied with a serenade of an Elvis impersonator with a hint of a German accent.

We entered the home stretch of our river cruise with stops in the village of Ludwigshafen where you can take an excursion to Heidelberg and then on to a day in the splendid city of Strasbourg, France before reaching the storybook village of Lucerne, Switzerland, which was a personal highlight for me. Everything in the town is so picture-perfect - from the beautiful medieval buildings and bridges to crystal-clear lakes, to boutique shops and bohemian cafes, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps. Everything in Switzerland is so perfect and well organized, that I often feel as if I am in some sort of fantasy movie, rather than just being a simple tourist.

Alas, all good things must come to an end. We disembark our beloved AmaWaterways ship on Day 8 and begin our adjunct trip with AmaWaterways post-cruise land package to incredible Lake Como, Italy; a marvelous locale of marble palaces nestled amongst cypress trees, where the rich and famous vacation and live. Lake Como feels like a mashup between all the best parts of Switzerland and Italy- the architectural beauty, cultural friendliness, and excellent cuisine of Italy overlaid by the cleanliness and organization of the Swiss. 48 hours at this magical ending point didn’t feel long enough, just as the whole trip seemed to sweep by in a blissful blur. Time flies when you’re having fun and all that. Hence, time races by when you’re having the best time of your life.

To speak more generally, a luxury river cruise offers a heightened level of elegance and sophistication compared to a standard cruise.

POPPY & SEED ANAHEIM PACKING DISTRICT

Located in the historic Anaheim Packing District, the location is hard to miss, operating out of the greenhouse-like building at Farmers Park. This concept takes fresh ingredients as less of a suggestion and sees it as more of a mandate. Reed and his wife are not alone in this grandiose endeavor. They have brought on Ashley Irene, founder of Heirloom Potager in Santa Ana to create and maintain a culinary garden. Even in season vegetables such as Hatch chilies, calendula, and summer squash.

Poppy & Seed is much more than a greenhouse with fresh garden variety, it’s a full restaurant. Chef Michael shows his full spectrum of skills with his visions of classics to new culinary experiences. To start we recommend the octopus for an appetizer. With a wonderfully charred octopus that lays on a bed of lightly dressed blend of greens accompanied by crisped to perfection, smashed potatoes. The Hangar Steak is the crowd favorite, along with the Smoked Duck and Lamb Shank. Truthfully you can’t go wrong either way. You can truly taste not only the flavors but also the love of Chef Michael and the whole staff.

The Reed’s are California natives, with a rich depth of love for the coasts of southern California. They strive tirelessly to not only provide fresh and delicious food for their guests but also, create a farmer's market for locals to buy fresh produce to make themselves. This approach is ground-breaking and creates a deeper bond between the restaurant and the guests.

For many reasons, Chef Michael Reed has quickly jumped into our list of favorite chefs. He is a culinary veteran, who knows how to make dishes that not only stun visually but stun with each bite, with vibrance and flavor. Partnered with his lovely wife, their

Since November 2019, the Newport Beach Italian food scene has never been the same. This was when the new standard of Italian dining “Bello by Sandro Nardone” was opened. The opening was met with much anticipation and the excitement has not cooled off, rather it continues to roll fast like a fresh cheese wheel down a grassy, sun-soaked Italian hill.

The name “Bello” is derived from the word in Italian meaning “handsome”, this describes the layout perfectly. Who would’ve thought that the whiskey bourbon game is just as complex as the product itself. You must sip slowly to sense every layer. We sat down with founder of CaskX, Jeremy Kasler to hear his new innovation for the bourbon industry.

Kasler himself is a strong jawed handsome man, who has been all over the world. He speaks with intentionality and honor. The UK native has lived everywhere from Hong Kong to Sydney. He now resides in Los Angeles with his lovely wife.

He has always been business minded and a forward thinker. He started with selling wine and then moved to Chinese contemporary art for investments. What is the obvious next step? Well, Whiskey of course! Noticing that established markets are drinking more bourbon and of a higher quality. Also with emerging markets coming into play such as China, India and Brazil. Also a lot of distilleries are struggling to find resources to stay open. So where a need and an idea met, bourbon investments sounded like the future.

So from his revelations he created CaskX, an investment company for whiskey barrels. For a long time building a portfolio of whiskey casks has been out of the question for a lot of private investors due to a myriad of reasons. But CaskX is swinging open the door to top tier whiskey cask investments for everyone.

You might ask why is bourbon a good investment? Well as Jeremy puts it, “It ages in the barrel and improves in flavor so it will almost certainly be worth more after 5 years of aging. Add to that unprecedented global demand and the potential for investment is high.”

How did this project come about?

John Russo: After the success of my first book, “About Face,” I wanted to do another charity book. Since there are so many incredible charities, I was like, why focus on one when I can focus on 100? Little did I know how overwhelming the undertaking would be.

What were the challenges of finding, contacting, and photographing so many subjects?

John Russo: I think I knew it wouldn’t be easy from the start, but honestly, I had no idea until I dove into the project. We first made a list of people who were doing great things. I assembled a team at my office to work on the project. Thank God I had an incredible staff to help with this project. Jason Bush, Stephanie Szeto, Tas Limur, Gus Dering, Justin Miller, Asia Willis, and Rachel Hill all worked so hard on this. Without them, the book would not have happened. I also had some friends jump in to help: Nick Ferroni, Kate Moulene, and Irena Medavoy. They connected me to so many amazing participants.

Then the biggest obstacle was getting to the people you wanted in the book. Ahh, that is probably the most difficult aspect of doing a book, especially with celebrities involved. Our team had to reach out to their reps. Keep in mind these reps get thousands of requests. So you have to be super persistent and keep contacting them. Thankfully I have relationships with most reps. That is not to say the “ask” was easy. It was not. Most of the publicists I have worked with over the years were happy to help and bring this to their clients; sadly, some did not. It was a huge eye-opener and a big lesson learned on my part. But hey, I just rolled with it and moved on to other people. The people that we wanted in the book are, for the most part, very busy, and most do not live in LA. So lots of travel around the globe. It was a lot.

Did you have a sponsor finance the project? I can see it getting very expensive to travel around and photograph talent... Hair/makeup and styling etc. Sadly, no; in terms of the production, photoshoots, and writing, I financed it all myself. I could have bought a house in Aspen for how much this book cost me. Honestly, it was so worth it. I figured this would be my contribution to all of the charities to raise awareness and much-needed funds. Graciously most hair, makeup, and styling was a donation. There are some great people out there who want to help great causes.

Charity books are sometimes difficult to find a publisher. How did you find a publisher? Yeah, that’s the million-dollar question. I reached out to many publishers, and all were interested. Then I told them it was a charity book and that all of the proceeds were going to charity and no one wanted to touch it. I get it, everyone has to make money, so I was not surprised or annoyed with them. One of the gracious and super generous participants, Quinton Van Der Burgh, stepped up and said I’d love to finance the publishing. Thank God for him. He helped create a beautiful, timeless piece. I am forever in debt to him for his generosity.

What were one or two of the more memorable shoots? Geez, there were so many. But I would have to say traveling to Zurich, Switzerland, to photograph Elton John for the Elton John Aids Foundation. The shoot happened so fast; his team literally gave me three days to plan and fly to Zurich. But it was Elton, so you know, hell or high water, I was making that happen. He was so gracious and asked my assistants and me to stay for his concert and gave us front-row seats. And then I was in London photographing Livia Firth for the book; she mentioned Gisele and Tom; she literally called them in front of me. The next thing I knew, I was going to Montana to photograph them for their foundations. We went to their home and spent the day with them. What an incredible experience!

I see you have some big names, Serena Williams and Eva Longoria, who wrote forwards for the book. How did you get them? I have been photographing both Eva and Serena for years. They are both great girls! Always willing to help with a great cause. They are both huge humanitarians and have literally devoted their lives to Philanthropy, so it was fitting for them to write forward. I was so honored when they said yes! You know they are “true friends” when they show up for you. And they did just that, show up for me. I will never forget it. We have three other forwards, Irena Medavoy and Nicole Avant. Both jumped at the chance to help by reaching out to their friends to make to set up shoots and interviews. I absolutely love these women. And Quinton, our publisher, wrote a beautiful forward on the work he has been doing in South Africa. I am so humbled by all of them for taking the time to help make this book happen.

Is there anyone you wish you could have shot for the book but, for whatever reason, did not? Yes, of course, a bunch. If they are celebrities, the majority of the time, the request never gets to the talent, so that’s unfortunate. But hey, I get it. I’m never discouraged because I know I’ll photograph them for the next book! The confidence is real! Lol

Will there be another book? A series two? It’s such a great concept, and I don’t foresee a shortage of people doing great things. You nailed it, there is no shortage of people doing great things, and I want to continue bringing awareness to great causes globally. We need to focus on these amazing people and how they are making a difference. So the answer is, Yes, there will be many more books and maybe even a documentary! I’ll just put that in the universe; thank you.

Is there a cause or charity that you are passionate about? There are a few, but it breaks my heart when people are homeless. We live in the richest, most plentiful country, yet people live in tents under bridges. It’s mind-blowing to me that our governments don’t develop a plan so that no US citizen will ever have to be homeless. I am also passionate about caring for the elderly. Our country does not honor the elderly as other countries do. I want to work on a project that brings awareness to this problem.

You are one of the world’s most famous and recognizable photographers. You have been at the top of the game for nearly 20 years. How do you stay relevant in such a competitive field? Well, I don’t know about all that but thank you for the praise. Look, I love what I do at the end of the day. I mean, I really love what I do. It’s fun and exciting, and I get to travel the world. I feel very blessed to be where I am. Super thankful to say the least. I’m not in competition with anyone; people hire me for what I bring to the table and hire others for their creative eyes. There is so much work out there for everyone. I have stayed relevant by consistently producing great work that I am proud of, and most importantly, I am not an asshole. I am super happy at every shoot, and if I’m not, I will win an Oscar for acting like I am.

As they lifted some water bottles from the car, they heard a familiar voice call out to them. It was Jesse Williams, the man they were preparing the room for. He walked up causally, grabbed the waters quickly from them and offered a warm smile and a helping hand. Our team was taken aback by the simple act of lending a hand. This humility of Jesse Williams has propelled him forward in the industry, but also has kept him grounded and not out of touch with humanity.

Jesse Williams, a name that resonates with sophistication and talent, has firmly established himself as a modern gentleman in the entertainment industry. How would you define a NOBLEMAN?

I think that involves calm, patience, and kindness. You have to be decisive and clear, but also sensitive and tender and a great listener. That's where real confidence comes from not overcompensating and not trying to always puff your chest out. But obviously, start with etiquette. Have some grace, hold the door, be polite, and say thank you. Those basic things that you'd first think you'd teach your kid when you take them out in public.

Looking back, who has been your greatest role model that shaped you?

Definitely my parents, without question. They really both with theory and practice gave me landmarks and guiding lights for most things in my life. They were very different from each other and didn't always agree in terms of their global view, vision, or experience, but they did a really good job of setting expectations. So, I wasn't surprised when I saw things coming, because I was already prepared for that. That was something that I didn't necessarily appreciate at the time. But I have grown to really value and carry the best parts of that forward as a parent.

So, you got into acting later in life, what are some other jobs you worked before getting into acting?

I worked a lot of so-called, uh, I won't say “real jobs” because what we do is definitely a real job. But I worked in a lot of different spaces. I worked in restaurant service. I waited tables, I was a bartender, and I bar-backed. I worked in law firms for a long time. I found jobs on Craigslist, just like hustling random, odd jobs. I worked as a grip and a second camera operator and did student films and budget films. I've worked and provided my own spending money since I was 11.

You learn to create a little bit of independence and autonomy and just value work. I think that stuff helps you see people as people. When you get to understand people - when you can actually relate to them, it creates an opportunity for connection.

It looks like you enjoy traveling. Are there any travel experiences that stand out to you as particularly transformative or eye-opening?

A transformative experience that I had in my early 20s was when I went to West Africa. I lived in Benin and Togo for almost a semester during college and that was remarkable.

Do you have a favorite place to travel to just relax and kick back?

Maine. I've got a lot of family in Maine, and I've spent some portion of the year every year of my life there. I got a lot of family up there that I love, and we're on the water, and we're sailors. We live an unplugged life up there, so that's my favorite place.

You mentioned sailing, what are some of your other hobbies? Yeah, sailing is certainly a big one. Being on the ocean, whether it's just paddling out or being on a rowboat. Just alone or with others, just the quiet and the humility that you need to have on the ocean. I've gone on long sailing trips five days and nights, you know, without being on land or seeing land. I have been in storms and had to be buckled into my mast and real serious business, you know, and it's the ocean that will swallow you and not even notice. So those things certainly put things in perspective.

Just reading a novel, reading a play, or reading something without any worry about knocking out other work or what's around the corner. That's a really peaceful experience for me. I'm an athlete, so I love to bang around and play soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.

I heard you are starting to collect timepieces, tell us about that. I wouldn't say I'm a big watch collector. I'm new to it, but I do like a nice vintage, understated quality timepiece. I'll be in jeans and a t-shirt and a watch, and sneakers. Those are the two things I kind of do pay attention to, footwear and maybe a nice watch. I like a flat face, low profile, not huge in terms of the dial size. I'm more of a vintage throwback person. Pieces with a heritage that have been around, that are tried and true, and simple. There's not a lot of bells and whistles.

Are there any uncharted territories in either your career or personal life, that you're excited to explore?

Yeah, I'd like to be writing more. There are some things I want to get out. Maybe they don't work, but I need to get 'em out. Also, directing is something that I'd love to do more of. So those are two things creatively that I'm excited about. I'm most excited about being a dad. I know it's going to get hard as well as, be wonderful. Those are the first things that come to mind. I don't have big targets career-wise. I don't let that guide too much. I mean, I have ambitions. I have a work ethic and a drive, but I don't need to feel necessarily like I've made it to certain marks. I'm trying to honestly slow down and be present and just enjoy myself. I was at a sprint, I've been living at a sprint for a long time, and with a lot of different channels open in service to a lot of different people. I am now trying to be a little more intentional.

Can you share the values that drive you to use your platform for good?

It's how I was raised, kind of focusing on the collective, on working with people. I bounced around a lot from cultures and economic classes as a young person in the 80s and 90s, and I say that only because I had exposure, real life, and in-person experience with the many different planets that a lot of us live on in this country. I think empathy comes with that kind of an understanding. We are all working with different resources and tools. And when you know that and you have a sense of history, I believe it helps you approach things from a place of compassion and patience.

I grew up in Chicago in the 80s. There was certainly urban poverty, public health, and social justice concerns. So, that is carried forward, I was active in high school and college, certainly in Philadelphia. Philadelphia was a real formative place for me. The city has a rich history of activism and organizing. I learned a great deal there and that's when I started teaching in public schools and tutoring and serving my community as a young adult. I didn't start acting until I was almost 30.

So right now, I'm really proud of being on the board of directors at Advancement Project, which is an incredible national advocacy organization. Created by civil rights attorneys who do incredible work, running cases all the way up to the Supreme Court. They are providing legal services and undergirding local activists all over the country. So, we're dealing directly with legislation as well as on the ground, bootstrap organizing.

I put in a lot of energy and I'm proud of what's happening there. Also, I am blending arts and activism. There's no place better for that than Harry Belafonte's organization. Sankofa.org, so I'm on the board there as well. He's the pinnacle of walking that line. I was so privileged to have him as a mentor and a friend. We try to just walk and honor his legacy as we go forward.

Acting and directing, those are things I really do love. But the measure in my household very much was always, Who are you in service to? What are you doing for others? So, you got to have a balance there.

Flip the switch, nobody else can do it for you. The power company generates electricity at the power station and delivers it to your house where you live. Yet whether the lights and heat turn on in the rooms of your home, is unrelated to the power company. The power company is there at your command, but you must get up, rise, and flip the switch! When you do you activate the power flow. The power company does its part in placing electricity within your reach, though the strength to activate it, is in your command.

Flipping the switch does not force the power company to do anything, as what is made available is just accessed. I am responsible for flipping the switch, to turn it on.

I can’t call the power company and say, “I’m having a party tonight, Can you come over to my house, and turn on the power, flip the switch for me”. They will respond, “No! The power company already placed the electricity within your reach, at your command. Flipping the switch on is an autonomous turning point, a little thing that makes a big difference.

To pair with each dish, a selection of fine wines was offered from various wineries including The Setting Wines, The Mascot, Cakebread Cellars, Rusack, Lithology, Plinth, The Wine MVP by Will Blackmon, and Mail Road Wines. The sommeliers were able to guide guests through the history and story behind each winery and what makes some of the most prestigious wineries unique from one another.

Guests enjoyed champagne from Lallier, martinis from The Botanist, a nice cold beer from Peroni, a Purity Vodka custom cocktail, or scotch whiskey tastings from CaskX. Mixologist Irving Gonzalez from Snake Oil Cocktail Co. also created specialty cocktails with beautiful presentations.

Between courses, guests could get up close and try on impressive jewelry pieces and watches from Happy Jewelers or relax outside and listen to the band. Later on, attendees were surprised by a vibrant marching band followed by dancers, each presenting beautifully decorated cupcakes. A crepe cart also entered creating sweet treats before the chef’s second course.

Guests not only had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world of culinary excellence, fine wine, and cocktail craftsmanship but also contributed to making a positive impact on the community with proceeds from the event being donated to benefit JDRF – the world’s largest nonprofit funder of type 1 diabetes research. A silent auction was also held throughout the event, featuring a variety of exclusive items and experiences such as wine from the event, gift cards, travel packages, a Miele espresso machine, and so much more.

As the event came to a close, we were able to hear from our founders, our guest of honor, Michael Mina, and the mayor of Newport Beach, Noah Von Blom. Eleventy Takes Newport Beach for Collection Preview

Our friends at Eleventy Milano are expanding in So Cal with a new store in Beverly Hills and an expanded store at Gary's, Newport Beach. So to celebrate, we partnered to create an incredible night with friends of the brand. Guests arrived at a beautiful Pelican Hill home in Newport Beach, overlooking the glistening California coastline to enjoy an evening of food, drinks, and beautiful Italian clothing.

The highlight of the evening was the sneak peek look at the brand’s latest collection. The collection combines Italian timeless classics with a redefined modern elegance. VIP NOBLEMAN guests even had the chance to talk and get to know the men behind Eleventy, including Marco Baldassari, the co-founder and Creative Director, and and President, Geoff Schneiderman.

MR G'S Bistro Hospitality served an array of Italian-inspired small bites, prepared from scratch in the home's stunning kitchen, paired with handcrafted cocktails, spritz, and standout wines from Lithology. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon and the refreshing 2019 Chardonnay from Lithology, adding a further touch of elegance to the event as they watched the beautiful Newport Beach sunset.
