When Chicago was incorporated in 1837, the motto ‘Urbs in Hort’ or ‘city in garden’ was adopted to portray the city as a beautiful gateway to the fertile lands of the west. Deploying this 19th romantic vision was the European concept of the Boulevard. However, with its American application, the Boulevard system precipitated a suburban exodus to the periphery, laying the seeds of future urban self-destruction of many post-industrial cities.

Rather than a problem, this project catalyzes the rupture between the urban fragments as a potential stimulus.

This project reconceives simultaneously the urban park and boulevards systems, by making a series strategic distinctions: 1. Opening Barriers, 2. Initiating Commonwealth, 3. Absorbing Influences, 4. Calorification of the Necklace, 5. Reactivating the Boulevards, 6. Reinforcing the Green Archipelago.

Architecturizing strips In their 19th century idealization, boulevards formed promenades constructing space for pleasure activities ranging from carriage rides to leisurely walks.

Currently, Chicago’s boulevards have not adapted with the times, becoming barriers between Chicago’s neighborhoods: manifold, underutilized and oversized.

By mutually introducing a combined system of sustainable 3Speeds transportation and specific urban scapes, Chicago’s boulevards revitalize their original dynamic character tailored to the 21st century living.

The 3Speeds circulation system (rail/ path/sidewalk) transforms the necklace into a calorifying motor, an arch connecting the different neighborhoods to downtown through the green archipelago.

The urban strips host diverse ephemeral events dispersed with the linear momentum along the promenade, ‘designed’ by the enclosed communities.

Each neighborhood governs its adjacent promenade, fostering new programs, giving Chicagoans agency in their city’s design, while highlighting every neighborhoods’ unique identity.

Lorsque Chicago a été constitué en 1837, la devise «ville jardin» ou «Urbs dans Hort» a été adopté pour représenter la ville comme une magnifique ouverture vers les terres fertiles de l’ouest. Le déploiement de cette vision romantique du 19ème correspond au concept européen du boulevard. Toutefois, avec sa mise en pratique à l’américaine, le système de Boulevard a précipité l’exode vers la périphérie, semant les graines d’un avenir urbain autodestructif typique de tant de villes postindustrielles. Plutôt qu’un problème, ce projet capte la rupture entre les fragments urbains comme stimulus potentiel.

Il redéfinit simultanément le parc urbain et les systèmes de boulevards, en réalisant une série de distinctions stratégiques : 1. Ouverture des barrières 2. Création du Commonwealth 3. Absorption des influences 4. Calorification de la ceinture 5. Réactivation des boulevards 6. Renforcement de l’archipel vert.

Les bandes urbaines accueillent divers évènements éphémères dispersés le long de la promenade, «conçus» par les communautés alentour. Chaque quartier régit sa partie adjacente de la promenade, encourageant de nouveaux programmes, donnant ainsi aux Chicagoans la possibilité d’agir et de participer à la conception de leur ville, tout en soulignant l’identité unique de chaque quartier. Les bandes urbaines s’adaptent elles-mêmes à la ville et à ses différents quartiers imprévisibles, excitantes et expérimentales, transformées selon les situations uniques métropolitaines, et concevant des espaces publics innovants.

Initialement conçus comme des espaces de repos et de détente, les dizaines de parcs de Chicago sont actuellement utilisés comme espaces de loisirs prospères absorbés dans le paysage artificiel du 19ème siècle. Renforçant cet archipel vert, chaque île identifie le système alternatif d’une nature modifiée, ils deviennent un catalogue de scènes interstitielles verdoyantes.

The urban strips adapt themselves to Chicago and its diverse neighborhoods – unpredictable, exciting and experimental, transformed according to unique metropolitan situations, creating innovative public spaces.

The promenade can inhabit farmer’s markets, fairs, Luna-Parks, wireless tree houses, bars and cafés, hubs, watchtowers, greenhouses or just stay as they are now. These architectural events are flexible and can be modified in time according to the neighborhood’s evolution.

Lush_scapes Initially designed as rest and relax spaces, presently, Chicago’s ten parks are used as prosperous recreational areas absorbed within the artificial 19th century landscape. Reinforcing this green archipelago – each island identifies with a different system of modified nature – they become a catalogue of green interstitial scenes: wilderness, agriculture, picturesque gardens,

allotment gardening, open space or sunbathing lawns.

These islands, surrounded by the city’s distinct neighborhoods, become the antitheses of the private urban context, the vanishing point of the calorifying strips.

As an architect and urban designer devoted the 21st century society and approach the city as a complex and multi-layered phenomenon I have realized that we can’t work as most architects did before, or still doing today, offering a well designed finished product to a welldefined society.

We are living in a world that is rapidly changing and constantly reinventing itself using the digital and technological tools. The overload of information and mix of cultures and disciplines demand a new way of thinking and working.

While working with Ecosistema Urbano on Dreamhamar I have learned - by doing - that knowledge and creation are becoming hybrid phenomena, which is transforming traditional closed and fixed structures into open and extremely flexible networked configurations.

En tant qu’architecte et urbaniste dédiée à la société du 21è siècle, avec une approche de la ville comme phénomène complexe, j’ai réalisé que nous ne pouvions plus travailler comme la plupart des architectes d’hier et parfois d’aujourd’hui, en offrant un produit fini bien calibré pour une société bien définie.

Nous vivons dans un monde qui change rapidement, et qui se réinvente constamment en s’appuyant sur la puissance digitale et technologique. La somme d’information ainsi que le mélange des cultures et des disciplines préconisent une nouvelle façon de penser et de travailler.

Au cours de ma collaboration avec Ecosistema Urbano sur le projet Dreamhamar, j’ai appris par la pratique que la connaissance et la création deviennent un principe hybride qui transforme les structures traditionnellement fixes et fermées en réseaux ouverts et extrêmement flexibles.

WHAT IS DREAMHAMAR? Dreamhamar (dreamhamar.org), is a participation and network design process led by Ecosistema Urbano, architecture firm and think tank that created the process to redesign the Stortorget Square in Hamar (Norway).

Hamar kommune decided to take a pioneer approach to the construction of the new Stortorget Square. Instead of handing the Hamar citizens a finished square, they were able to participate in a collective brainstorming process that will determine Stortorget’s new configuration.

I have joined Ecosistema Urbano in January 2011 and had the opportunity to work on Dreamhamar with a team of diverse proficiencies from competition to implementation phase. During this period, in parallel for working in Madrid, I was based in Hamar to share with the local citizens their view of the city and what they dream for Stortorget.

dreamhamar (dreamhamar.org), est un projet participatif de design en réseau (Network Design) mené par Ecosistema Urbano, bureau d’architecture et think tank qui a crée la méthodologie, dont l’objet est de redessiner la Stortorget Square, la place principale de la ville d’Hamar (Norvège).

La mairie d’Hamar a décidé d’embrasser une approche pionnière pour la construction de la nouvelle place principale de la ville. A la place de se voir livrer un ‘produit fini’, les habitants ont pu participer au procédé de brainstorming collectif qui déterminera la nouvelle configuration de la place.

J’ai rejoins Ecosistema Urbano en Janvier 2011, et eu l’opportunité de travailler sur ce projet avec une équipe aux compétences diverses, en couvrant l’ensemble des phases : de la compétition à l’implémentation. Durant cette période, en parallèle de Madrid je fus aussi basée à Hamar pour partager avec les citoyens leur approche de la ville et leurs rêves pour la nouvelle Stortorget.

Naturally, Dreamhamar is all about using democracy as a tool to reclaim public space. To implement the network design philosophy in the context of Stortorget, we have developed multiple satellites around Dreamhamar. These satellites were used for regrouping different stakeholders around a common cause: whether local – themes that are community related (such as “how to use the square throughout the changing seasons?”) or global - themes that are rather academic (such as “tactical urbanism”) - using the website as a free, open and reachable platform.

Implementing a varied and vivid set of networks allowed Dreamhamar to widen the project’s inputs and outputs, setting the grounds for a great amount of opportunities, therefore creating a dialogue within the networks.

Naturellement, la raison d’être du projet réside dans l’usage de la démocratie comme outil de revendication de l’espace public. Pour implémenter la philosophie du design participatif dans le contexte de Stortorget, nous avons développé de multiples satellites autour de dreamhamar. Ces micro-projets ont permis de regrouper différents acteurs autour d’une cause commune ; à l’échelle locale : thèmes liés à la communauté (par exemple l’utilisation de la place selon les saisons), à l’échelle globale : thèmes académiques (par exemple l’urbanisme tactique) en s’aidant du site internet comme une plateforme gratuite, ouverte et facile d’accès pour l’ensemble des acteurs.

L’implémentation d’une série de réseaux divers et dynamiques permet à dreamhamar d’élargir les entrées et les sorties d’information relatives au projet, de mettre en place les fondations pour de nouvelles opportunités favorisant les échanges au sein de ces réseaux.

The following components detail the set of networks that we developed for providing the fertile grounds to exchange ideas, enrich existing and new social connections and to change the citizens’ perception of the square.

Les éléments suivants détaillent la batterie de réseaux crées par Ecosistema Urbano pour fournir le terrain fertile à l’échange d’idées, à l’enrichissement des connections sociales existantes et nouvelles, et de transformer ainsi la perception de la place auprès des citoyens.

PHYSICAL LAB The Basarbygningen is Dreamhamar’s Physical Laboratory, where workshops, lectures and exhibitions took place through the fall of 2011. Not a gallery, nor a simple office or information centre. The laboratory was the most appropriate definition to reflect the hybrid use of the space. Facing Stortorget, the Physical Lab was open daily with free entrance. The strategic physical position and the open space played an interesting role within the local community - like a sponge, it would absorb any problem related to the square or the city, like a whiteboard it was a place to draw an idea, like a bar it was a place to meet new and old friends.

Le Basarbygningen est le laboratoire physique - le “Physical Lab” de dreamhamar, où les réunions, séminaires et expositions ont pris place lors de l’automne 2011. Ce n’est ni une galerie, ni un simple bureau ou centre d’information. Le laboratoire est la définition la plus adéquate pour refléter l’usage hybride de l’espace. Faisant face au Stortorget, le Physical Lab était ouvert gratuitement durant la journée.

L’emplacement était stratégique et l’espace ouvert joua un rôle clef au sein de la communauté locale : comme une éponge, il absorbait les problèmes liés à la place ou à la ville, comme une page blanche c’est un espace pour imaginer et dessiner une idée, comme un bar c’est un endroit pour retrouver ses amis et pour en rencontrer de nouveaux.

Moreover, the Physical Lab is a pop-up space, designed with a fresh new look and renovated in just a short time with much creativity. The idea behind this fresh and flexible design was to provide the space with an inviting air that could be easily adapted and used for various purposes (exhibitions, workshops, office, lectures...).

De plus, dessiné comme un espace éphémère – ‘pop up’ - le Physical Lab était conçut pour une courte durée, rénové rapidement, portant un nouveau design et un nouveau fonctionnement. Au delà du design innovant et flexible l’objectif était de donner à l’endroit une modularité qui pouvait facilement s’adapter pour être utilisé pour diverses occasions (expositions, ateliers, bureau, lab...).

THE CULTURAL RUCKSACK The Cultural Rucksack is a national programme that brings professionals of the arts and culture to Norwegian schools. The programme helps school pupils to become acquainted with all kinds of art and cultural expressions. This year, both the Education and Cultural Departments of Hamar Kommune have decided to connect the project to dreamhamar: 1292 school children have thought and painted their own ideas for the new Stortorget.

Le Cultural Rucksack est un programme national qui mêle les professionnels de l’art et de la culture aux écoles Norvégiennes. Le programme aide des élèves à se familiariser avec divers champs de l’art ou d’expressions culturelles. Cette année, le département de la culture et de l’éducation de la commune ont décidé de lier le programme à Dreamhamar : 1292 élèves ont imaginé et dessiné leurs propres idées pour la nouvelle place.

POSTERS PROMOTING EVENTS

ON-SITE WORKSHOPS / LECTURES The on-site workshops and lectures were used as activities to bring locals to participate in the process and create a community around Stortorget through various approaches. In order to bring people together, five different topics were used as catalysts: Each topic was introduced during a week that included two workshops and a lecture. +Technology week : How Hamar incorporate technology as a way to define a new concept of public space? + Activities week : What activities would the Hamarsings like to have on the square? + Environment week : How can we promote citizens to be more conscious and concerned about their environmental responsibility from design? + People week : How can we use the design of public spaces to improve/enhance/multiply and promote the interaction, creativity and auto organization dynamics between people? + Seasonal Strategy week : Can we design a public space as a responsive environment to the changing light/weather/temperature conditions?

The workshops and lectures were held in the Physical Lab and directed by community activators and creative guests invited by Ecosistema Urbano.

Local Community activators are creative and dynamic locals who worked with Ecosistema Urbano to lead the ongoing participation process. They have professional experience in terms of participation and workshops. Besides conducting the workshops, the community activators were in charge of generating participation, by creating and using local contacts.

Creative professional network are international experts who directed workshops, gave lectures and participated in building the local network among stakeholders in Hamar.

The on-site workshops allowed participants to meet, interact, brainstorm and discuss their proposals and thoughts regarding the square and the city.

The aim was to use creative methods in order to get the participants to know each other, and feel free to develop new and fresh ideas.

The lectures were both an opportunity to share the creative guests’ knowledge regarding each topic, and generate an open debate related to the community, along with specific guests who were invited to assist the lectures from the front row.

Les ateliers et les séminaires étaient utilisés comme des activités pour motiver les citoyens à participer au procédé, et pour créer une communauté autour de Stortorget au travers de différentes approches. Afin de fédérer les habitants autour d’un projet commun, cinq différents sujets ont été utilisés comme catalyseurs.

Chaque sujet était présenté pendant une semaine, en incluant deux ateliers et un séminaire.

- La semaine ‘technologie’ : comment Hamar peut-elle incorporer la technologie comme une manière de définir un nouveau concept d’espace public ?

- La semaine ‘activités’ : quelles sont les activités que les habitants souhaiteraient pratiquer sur leur place ?

- La semaine ‘environnement’ : comment peut-on motiver les citoyens à être plus conscients et concernés à propos de leur responsabilité environnementale dès le design du projet ?

- La semaine ‘habitants’ : comment peut-on utiliser le design des espaces publiques pour améliorer, accroître et promouvoir l’interaction, la créativité et l’auto-gestion dynamique entre les habitants ?

- La semaine ‘stratégie saisonnière’: comment peut-on créer un espace public comme un environnement réceptif aux changements de conditions de la lumière, météo, température ?

Les ateliers et les séminaires avaient lieu dans le Physical Lab, et dirigés par les Community Activators et les Creative Guests invités par Ecosistema Urbano.

Les Community Activators sont des citoyens créatifs et dynamiques qui ont travaillé avec Ecosistema Urbano pour mener le processus de participation. Ils ont une expérience professionnelle dans la gestion de la participation et des ateliers. Les Community Activators étaient aussi en charge de promouvoir et générer la participation, en créant et en utilisant leurs contacts locaux.

Les Creative Guests sont des experts internationaux qui mènent les ateliers, dispensent des séminaires et participent à la création d’un réseau local au sein des différents acteurs du projet à Hamar.

Les ateliers permettent aux participants de rencontrer, interagir et discuter leurs propositions et leurs réflexions concernant la place et la ville. L’objectif était d’utiliser des méthodes créatives afin que les participants se rencontrent, afin qu’ils se sentent libres de développer de nouvelles idées. Les séminaires étaient à la fois des opportunités de partager la connaissance des Creative Guests concernant chaque sujet, et de générer un débat ouvert lié à la communauté, avec des invités en lien avec le thème de la semaine qui étaient conviés à assister aux séminaires.

URBAN ACTIONS The urban actions are a series of events that took place at Stortorget, aiming to arouse expectation and call citizens to action on the square. They were a way of experiencing possible uses and solutions for the future square, but also to spontaneously change the urban environment for a short period of time.

Painthamar: Featuring the project’s opening event when Stortorget square was transformed in 3 days from a parking lot to a colourful creative space. This action was created and implemented

by Boamistura, an urban art collective from Madrid, Spain.

Creamhamar: This event transformed Stortorget into a huge living room offering Hamar citizens free lunch made from local products of surrounding farms. It was a tool used to gather people. This action was coordinated by Ecosistema Urbano and Gunvor Bakke and organized and implemented with 3rd year students from Bergen School of Architecture.

Greenhamar: An old car filled with flowers, a wooden platformbench-stage-playground made from 400 meters of wood and 10 tons of gravel, free homemade mushroom soup and bike powered organic smoothies – Greenhamar was all about bringing sustainable actions to take over the square and what used to be a road. It was coodinated with Gudbrand Kjøs and Frode Degvold Landscape architects and teachers at Vea School Statens fagskole for gartnere og blomsterdekoratører whose students developed and implemented the Greenhamar installation.

Playhamar: 5 trampolines on the square and the Physical Lab filled up with hundreds of children, parents, toys and laughs. The event lasted two days and during this period kids were bringing their own toys and exchanging them with other kids. Playhamar was carried out along with the local teacher Audun Jensen.

Arthamar: A fictive wedding, interactive screens, and poems written in leaves was some works of the 3rd year students from the Bergen school of Architecture when they came back to Hamar in October. The students were directed by the artist Eva Kun, and worked at locations that they considered interesting or challenging with installations and performances. They explored different areas trying to discover, putting into value or framing the qualities and potentials of these spaces. The goal was not to make a finished product but reveal, add and articulate qualities.

Les actions urbaines sont des séries d’événements dispensés sur la place, dont l’objectif est de provoquer l’attente et de motiver l’action des citoyens. Ces initiatives étaient un moyen d’expérimenter les usages et solutions possibles pour la future place, mais aussi de spontanément changer l’environnement urbain pour une période éphémère.

Painthamar: avec la volonté de dévoiler l’événement d’ouverture du projet, la place fut transformée en trois jours d’un parking vers un espace de création aux couleurs vives. Cet événement fut créé et implémenté par Boamistura, un collectif d’art urbain venant de Madrid.

Creamhamar : Cet événement transforma la place en un immense salon offrant aux citoyens d’Hamar un déjeuner gratuit composé de produits locaux issus des fermes environnantes. Ce fut un outil pour rassembler les individus. Cette action fut coordonnée par Ecosistema Urbano et Gunvor Bakke, organisé et implémenté avec l’aide des étudiants en troisième année de l’école d’architecture de Bergen.

Greenhamar: une ancienne voiture remplie de fleurs, une estrade de jeu conçue avec quatre cent mètres de bois et dix tonnes de graviers, soupe gratuite faite maison aux champignons et jus de fruit bio mixés à l’aide de la puissance générée par un vélo. L’objectif de Greenhamar fut de proposer des actions durables colonisant la place et la rue adjacente. Cette opération fut coordonnée avec les architectes paysagistes et les professeurs à l’école Vea School Statens fagskole for gartnere og blomsterdekoratører Gudbrand Kjøs et Frode Degvold, dont les étudiants ont développé et installé le dispositif Greenhamar.

Playhamar: cinq trampolines sur la place et le Physical Lab rempli de centaines d’enfants, parents, jouets et de rire ! L’événement dura deux jours durant lesquels les enfants amenèrent leurs anciens jouets pour les échanger avec les autres enfants. Playhamar fut conduit par un professeur local Audun Jensen.

Arthamar : un mariage fictif, des écrans interactifs et des poèmes écrits sur des feuilles fut le travail des étudiants en troisième année de l’école d’architecture de Bergen quand ils sont revenus à Hamar en octobre. Les étudiants furent guidés par l’artiste Eva Kun, et ont travaillé dans des lieux qu’ils considéraient comme intéressant et motivant, en établissant des installations et des performances. Ils ont exploré divers champs d’action, essayant de découvrir et de mettre en valeur le potentiel de ces espaces en faisant appel à leur sens. L’objectif n’était pas de réaliser un produit fini mais plutôt de révéler, d’ajouter et de manipuler ces qualités.

Alicantehamar : As part of the academic network of Dreamhamar, a group of 50 Architecture students from the University of Alicante (Spain), directed by their teacher Iván Capdevila, were involved in the design of the future Stortorget. They will be working from September 2011 to june 2012 on different proposals for Hamar’s main square. During one week they visited Hamar and interacted with locals around Stortorget. Jeffrey Schnapp Harvard MetaLab director, as part of the Dreamhamar international academic network, was also lecturing at Physical Lab and leading the student’s advisory board during Alicantehamar week.

Lighthamar : This was the launching event of the second phase of Dreamhamar. Ecosistema Urbano left the onsite action at Stortorget in order to focus on the urban proposal. The event combined an interactive lighting installation created by art collectives Uncoded + Fitzmedia, a new urban furniture for Stortorget (hamar stools) produced by local School Ungdom i Farta and the square invaded by singers from various local choirs, creating with Thomas Caplin (choir conductor at Hedmark University College) the first flash mob ever made in Hamar.

Alicantehamar : au sein du réseau académique de Dreamhamar, un groupe de cinquante étudiants de l’université d’architecture d’Alicante en Espagne, mené par le professeur Iván Capdevila, furent impliqués dans le design de la future place. Ils travailleront de septembre 2011 à juin 2012 sur différentes propositions pour Stortorget. Jeffrey Schnapp, directeur du MetaLab à Harvard faisant parti du réseau international de professionnels du projet, dispensa un séminaire au Physical Lab et mena le bureau de conseil aux étudiants pendant la semaine Alicantehamar.

Lighthamar : ce fut l’événement de lancement de la seconde phase du projet Dreamhamar. L’événement combina une installation de lumière interactive créée par le collectif d’artiste Uncoded + Fitzmedia, de nouveaux meubles urbains pour Stortorget (les petits bancs d’Hamar) réalisé par l’école locale Ungdom i Farta et la place fut appropriée par les chanteurs venant des différentes chorales locales, créant avec Thomas Caplin (responsable de la chorale au collège-université d’Hedmark) le premier flash mob jamais réalisé à Hamar.

DIGITAL LAB The Digital Laboratory is the online open platform where all information converged to enhance the participation process by gathering both local and global stakeholders under a single/ common virtual roof. Stortorget then became an online open tool for anyone interested in integrating the process, or just knowing about it.

The dreamhamar.org web platform is an open and participatory website that includes social network channels (facebook, twitter, flickr) and all the data and content from the Dreamhamar process.

Online workshops: Open to locals and creative people from all around the world, these workshops were an opportunity to work globally on the project, through specific themes with the support of experts.

The process showed an interesting mix of international people who joined the Tactical urbanism workshop led by architects Ethel Baraona+Paco González or the Public Space and People workshop led by sociologist Andrés Walliser.

Mobile app: dreamhamar.app is a digital application that was developed for the project to share georeferenced (text, image or video) ideas about urban aspects of Hamar. It also worked as a database of Hamar citizens’ thoughts, aims or desires for the new Stortorget.

Hamar experience: Weekly live broadcast to share dreamhamar’s progress and report the on-going activities. Every Monday at 6 pm Belinda Tato and myself interviewed someone from the local community. Besides allowing keeping track of the process, it was also a way to make it transparent.

Le Digital Laboratory est une plateforme ouverte en ligne où toute l’information converge pour améliorer le processus de participation en abritant à la fois les acteurs locaux et globaux sous un même toit virtuel. Stortorget devint alors un outil en ligne ouvert à quiconque serait intéressé d’intégrer le processus, ou simplement pour se tenir informé.

La plateforme internet dreamhamar.org est un site ouvert et participatif qui inclut un réseau de flux sociaux (facebook, twitter, flickr), avec l’information et le contenu du processus Dreamhamar.

Ateliers en ligne : ouverts aux habitants de Hamar et aux créatifs du monde entier, ces ateliers furent une opportunité de travailler globalement sur le processus de Dreamhamar, au travers de thèmes spécifiques menés par des experts. Le processus a démontré un mélange passionnant de personnes venant de différents pays, qui ont rejoint l’atelier ‘tactiques urbaines’ mené par les architectes Ethel Baraona et Paco González ou ‘l’espace publique et les habitants’, un atelier conduit par le sociologue urbain Andrés Walliser.

Mobile app : dreamhamar.app est une application digitale qui a été développé pour le projet afin de partager des idées geo-référencées (textes, images, vidéos) à propos des aspects urbains d’Hamar. Cette application a également servi de base de donnée pour les idées, les buts ou les désirs des habitants de la ville à propos de leur nouvelle place.

Hamar expérience : ce fut des rendez-vous hebdomadaires, diffusés en direct afin de partager les progrès et les activités en cours du projet. Chaque lundi à 18h, Belinda Tato (fondatrice d’ecosistema urbano) et moi même donnions des interviews d’un représentant de la communauté Dreamhamar. Au delà de nous permettre de maîtriser le déroulé du procédé, ce fut également un moyen de le rendre plus transparent.

ACADEMIC NETWORK Dreamhamar engaged various European universities and academic institutions into the network design process. Students with different backgrounds worked around Hamar’s main public space with their course, and contributed with their work and creativity in rethinking the square’s identity. Some of the European students involved also travelled to Hamar to take part in the urban actions, while some participated in the online workshops to guide their course.

Dreamhamar a engagé diverses universités européennes et institutions académiques dans le design participatif. Les étudiants de différentes origines ont travaillé autour de la place, et ont contribué avec leur travail et leur créativité à repenser l’identité de la place.

Une partie des étudiants impliqués ont également voyagés à Hamar pour prendre partie dans ces actions urbaines, alors que d’autres participèrent dans les ateliers en ligne. PRELIMINARY URBAN DESIGN From research to design, a multidisciplinary team of professionals – architects, urban designers, sociologists, engineers, artists… – will identify the needs expressed by the Hamar and Hedmark residents, and will develop creative solutions for the construction of the square. The urban design document is due for June 2012, and the construction of the square for December 2013.

The preliminary urban design is a document created by Ecosistema Urbano. It is the first phase of the design process: an urban and architectural approach to Stortorget, analysing its main characteristics and suggesting principles and tools to design the future square.

It defined the main aspects and gave some guidelines to work with. It was a starting point, a base to work with during the participation and network design process. It also acted as an introduction to Hamar and Stortorget for worldwide creative people engaged with the different workshops and activities inside the dreamhamar project framework.

/CREATIVE ARENA

The creative arena constitutes the largest area of the square, framed by the lively streetscape and the social nature ring.

The arena provides space for large events such as concerts or markets, but the space is also an arena for for playing and for daily life activities.

The creative arena allows for multi-functional use. It has a fi rm, durable pavement, and the elements above can be moved so that a ne landscape occurs depending on the people using it, time of day, season and events. It is aspace designed to promote social interaction.

The Preliminary Design proposed 3 Urban Atmospheres. Three areas of different atmosphere and special characteristics were suggested to organize the future Stortorget: 1. Lively streetscape: connection with the surrounding streets and buildings.

2. Social and nature ring: tree area and concentration of fixed elements (facilities, lighting system, benches, pavilions, etc).

3. Creative arena: open space with multipleuses and configurations to promote social interaction.

De la recherche au design, une équipe pluridisciplinaire de professionnels – architectes, urbanistes, sociologues, ingénieurs, artistes - identifieront les besoins exprimés par les habitants d’Hamar et développeront des solutions créatives pour la construction de la place. Le document de design urbain est attendu pour juin 2012, et la construction de la place pour décembre 2013.

Le design urbain préliminaire est un document créé par Ecosistema Urbano. C’est la première phase du design : une approche urbaine et architecturale de la place, analysant ses principales caractéristiques et suggérant des principes et des outils pour créer le design de la future place.

Ce document défini les principaux aspects et fournit les directives : c’est un point de départ, une base de travail durant le processus participatif. Il sert également comme une introduction à Hamar et à la place pour les créatifs venant du monde entier et engagés dans différents ateliers et activités au sein du projet.

Le design préliminaire propose trois zones urbaines aux atmosphères différentes et aux caractéristiques spécifiques, pour articuler la future place : 1. Lively streetscape : connexion avec les rues et les immeubles environnants.

2. Le cercle ‘sociale et nature’ : trois zones avec une concentration d’éléments fixes (équipements, système d’éclairage, bancs, kiosque, etc.).

3. L’arène créative : un espace ouvert à usages multiples et aux configurations encourageant l’interaction sociale.

/SOCIAL NATURE RING

The zone within the lively streetscape will have the shape of a variable ring, it contains all the fi xed elements of the square such as trees, linear benches, shelters, pavilions,...It is planted with various tree species of different height. The trees are planted in clusters, delimiting the lively streetscape and the creative arena, an forming micro-spaces for socialization. Technical installations such as water, sewage and electricity conduits will be underground, with many access points above ground. Ring formation of the technical devices makes the square fl exible since there are multiple opportunities for connection.

/LIVELY STREETSCAPE

The new Stortorget square is divided into 3 zones or atmospheres, caracterized by different use of materials, and providing different backgrounds for use: The outer zone connects to the buildings surrounding the square and, is called “lively streetscape“. Lively streetscape adopts the materiality of the neighboring streets and let it “grow” into the square via the streetscape area. This zone varies in width on all sides, and is daily used by shoppers, users of the culture house.

There is something great about making education an “art”; it spices up our daily lives, providing us with tools we never even knew we could use before. Like wearing glasses for the first time, art gives us a sense of depth. I would like to share with you an exciting project that is part of Dreamhamar, the network design process I was working on through 2011.

Il y a quelque chose de formidable à propos de faire de l’éducation un art ; cela met du piment dans nos vies quotidiennes en nous fournissant des outils que nous n’utilisions pas auparavant. Comme porter des lunettes pour la première fois, l’art nous donne une sensation de profondeur. Ce projet fait parti de l’ensemble dreamhamar, le procédé de design participatif sur lequel j’ai travaillé en 2011.

The Cultural Rucksack project (the official website in Norsk Den kulturelle skolesekken) is a national program that brings professionals of the arts and culture to Norwegian schools. The program helps students become acquainted with all kinds art and cultural expressions. This year, both the Education and Cultural Departments at Hamar Kommune have decided to connect the project to Dreamhamar, therefor giving the

young generation an opportunity to express and develop their ideas for Stortorget public space further by exploring it deeply with local artists.

For Deamhamar it was a great opportunity for creating a satellite dedicated to this network and ensuring participation, as the program is part of the school curriculum.

After Hamar Kommune delivered us the data of 12 schools, 54 classes and 1292 students participating in the process, from ages 12 to 16 and with the support of 4 local artists, at Ecosistema Urbano we had to figure out a way of coordinating and incorporating the process into Dreamhamar by allowing every student to participate while also reserving the possibility for some pupils to work with the artists. It wasn’t an easy task at first as we had more than a thousand pupils, 4 artists and less than two months to accomplish the whole process.

The project was divided into two phases: The first one is school workshops, where the teachers helped the pupils to structure and draw their ideas in A4 paper. Following a selection process, each class chose their representatives group that moved to the second phase to realize their ideas with the artists.

The second phase - artists’ workshops – involved 32 different teams of class representatives that worked with the artists on creating 1/200 models, based on their ideas at the Dreamhamar Physical Lab facing the square.

Pour Dreamhamar, ce fut une remarquable opportunité de créer un projet parallèle dédié à ce réseau et assurer que la participation à ce programme soit intégrée au cursus de l’école.

Après que la commune d’Hamar nous ai transmis les informations : 12 écoles, 54 classes et 1292 élèves âgés de 12 à 16 ans participants à ce procédé, et avec le support de quatre artistes locaux, nous devions définir le moyen de coordonner et d’incorporer ce processus au sein de Dreamhamar en permettant à chaque élève de participer, et aussi d’avoir la possibilité pour certains de travailler avec les artistes.

Le projet était divisé en deux phases : tout d’abord les ateliers à l’école où les professeurs aident les élèves à structurer et dessiner leurs idées sur du papier A4. Suite à la phase de sélection, chaque classe a choisi son groupe de représentants afin de réaliser leurs idées avec les artistes.

La seconde phase – les ateliers avec les artistes – impliquèrent 32 équipes composées de représentants des classes qui ont travaillé avec les artistes à la création de modèle en 1/200 basé sur leurs idées au Physical Lab de Dreamhamar.

OPENING

The results were fascinating. First, it was a real pleasure to see the pupils coming every day to the Physical Lab, starting early in the morning by discussing the ideas they have developed during the first phase with the artist, and finishing early afternoon with beautiful models.

Les résultats furent incroyables. Tout d’abord, ce fut un réel plaisir de voir tous ces élèves venir chaque jour au Physical Lab, commencer tôt le matin par discuter de leurs idées qu’ils avaient développés pendant la première phase avec les artistes, et finir leurs journées avec leurs jolies maquettes.

It was also an interesting opportunity to talk with some of the pupils. This gave us insights of what they want, how and why, a real tool to better understand the young generation of Hamar.

Many of the drawings produced by the pupils, while working individually in class, suggested building fountains, bridges and cafés on the square. The second phase of the process, mixing the pupils in small groups and giving time and space for discussing the propositions, a walk in the square and a look at contemporary references for public spaces, has truly opened their mind to other ideas and to the development of their collaborative skills.

Ce fut également l’opportunité de discuter avec certains de ces élèves. Cela nous a donné une idée de ce qu’ils veulent, comment et pourquoi : un outil efficace pour mieux comprendre la nouvelle génération d’Hamar.

Nombre de dessins réalisés par les élèves, alors qu’ils travaillaient individuellement en classe, suggéraient des fontaines, ponts et cafés sur la place. La seconde phase du procédé mixant les élèves en petits groupes et donnant du temps et de l’espace à la discussion des propositions, et une visite de la place avec un regard aux références contemporaines pour les espaces publiques ont réellement ouvert leurs esprits à d’autres idées, et contribué au développement de leurs qualités de collaboration.

On October 2010 I left Paris to Madrid for 15 months. Naturally, I was looking forward to something new, culturally and professionally. Nevertheless, as a young graduate architect, I was afraid of what was ahead of me – unemployment. Since the financial crisis hit Spain in 2008, more than 40% of the Spanish architecture offices closed, and the unemployment rate among young people was almost 50%.

While looking for work I came by an initiative offered by the European Commission – The European exchange program for young entrepreneurs. This cross-border unique exchange program is one of the few available for young professionals (in comparison to many others available for students), offering new entrepreneurs the chance to learn from experienced entrepreneurs in the same work field by exchanging knowledge. After completing six years of theory from BA to HMO, I looked at this as my opportunity to apply the theory into practice.

In order to apply to the program I had to imagine and create my future business, a three-year business plan, and write down my motivations for why and how the experience in Spain is going to alter my future. Only, while believing in it entirely, I didn’t know how it was actually going to transform my way of thinking and doing.

The European Commission approved my application and I could work during 6 months while receiving a monthly pay.

I chose Ecosistema Urbano, due to the agency’s focus on engaging community members in their project development processes and their innovative solutions for complex urban and architectural issues. I always viewed architecture as entrepreneurship, because of its constant concern with the notion of a project: to lead a collaboration of diverse areas of expertise toward a precise goal, in order to produce meaningful changes. Joining the Ecosistema Urbano team was, to me, an opportunity to collaborate while learning and sharing knowledge, motivations and methods.

En octobre 2010, j’ai quitté Paris pour Madrid et ce pour 15 mois. Naturellement, j’étais excitée à l’idée de vivre une nouvelle expérience culturelle et professionnelle. Néanmoins, en tant que jeune architecte diplômée, j’étais effrayée de ce à quoi j’allais être confrontée : le chômage. Depuis que la crise financière a frappé l’Espagne en 2008, plus de 40% des agences d’architectures en Espagne ont fermé et le taux de chômage des jeunes atteint 45%.

Quand je recherchais des alternatives d’emploi, j’ai découvert une initiative portée par la Commission Européenne – Le programme d’échange Européen pour les jeunes entrepreneurs. Ce programme transfrontalier d’échange est unique en son genre et offre aux nouveaux entrepreneurs la chance d’apprendre auprès de personnes expérimentées dans le même secteur grâce au transfert de connaissance. Après avoir complété six ans de théorie lors de mes études, c’était le moment pour moi d’appliquer la théorie à la pratique.

Afin de postuler au programme, j’ai imaginé et créé mon futur projet avec l’aide d’un business plan sur trois ans, ainsi que la description de ma motivation concernant les raisons et les éléments qui font que mon expérience en Espagne influencerait ma future carrière. Seulement, bien qu’y croyant réellement, je ne savais pas à quel point cela allait transformer ma façon de penser et de faire. La commission européenne approuva ma candidature ce qui me permis de travailler pendant six mois en recevant un salaire mensuel.

J’ai choisi Ecosistema Urbano, pour leur focus à engager les membres d’une communauté dans leur projet de développement, et pour leurs solutions innovantes concernant des problématiques urbaines et architecturales complexes.

J’ai toujours considéré l’architecture en tant qu’entrepreneur, car lié à la notion de gestion de projet : mener la collaboration de divers champs d’expertises vers un objectif précis, afin de produire des changements significatifs. Rejoindre l’équipe d’Ecosistema Urbano fut une opportunité de collaboration tout en apprenant et en partageant la connaissance, les motivations et les méthodes.

Le projet des Jeux Olympiques à Beyrouth et Tel-Aviv fut un projet de recherche, initié par Erez Ella. La mission consistait à valider la possibilité de proposer l’organisation conjointe des Jeux de 2020 au MoyenOrient par le Liban et Israël. L’idée, à la fois noble mais aussi utopique, m’a attirée non seulement car je suis originaire de cette région, mais aussi parce que je souhaitais apprendre la manière de structurer ce type d’argument.

Nos premiers pas consistèrent à effectuer des recherches : sur les JO en tant qu’institut, sur l’organisation de l’événement, sur les pays participants, sur le travail de recherche historique et stratégique réalisé par les pays organisateurs des précédentes éditions. Par la suite, nous avons étudié l’infrastructure au Liban et en Israël afin de proposer de futurs développements, et nous avons aussi analysé les contraintes politiques pour examiner si un tel projet était réalisable. La présentation finale fut dévoilée devant un membre de la commission des JO.

The proposal for holding the Olympic Games in Beirut and Tel-Aviv was a research project, initiated by Erez Ella. The mission was to check the feasibility of holding the 2020 Olympic Games in the Middle East between two countries - Lebanon and Israel. This noble and utopian idea interested me not only because of my origins, but also since I wanted to learn how to structure such an argument.

The work consisted of a general research on the institution of the Olympic Games, the organization, the countries that took part, a work of historical research and strategic - what was the proposal by the winning hosting cities? Then, we briefly looked into the infrastructure in Lebanon and Israel, suggesting future developments. We looked at the political constraints to take into consideration, whether such a project is feasible at that level. The final presentation was displayed before a member of the Committee of the Olympic Games.

5 FOR 1, COHOUSING IN MONTREUIL 5 POUR 1,HABITAT GROUPÉ À MONTREUIL A study case for HMONP (mémoire)

This imaginary project is a case study I have invented to conclude a year of studying for the part three in Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris la Villette.

The aim of this year was to give some practical knowledge to follow the large amount of theories absorbed during the past years in the various architecture schools. It consisted of classes in project management, constructions basics, programming, office management and more. During that year I have worked full time in Philippe Dubus following various projects and tasks in different phases to get familiar with the process of constructing in France.

The study case picks a project seen during this year and explains the phases, challenges, force relations, regulations and almost every part of the project, apart from its architecture.

My idea by inventing a project was to use the knowledge seen not only at Philippe Dubus, but also while working with other architects doing interior design and multiuse competitions.

The idea in co-housing is working with the clients, closely, in order to find a more adapted solution for shared housing.

The desire to promote and develop cohousing comes from the benefits that the clients can gain from it – economically (the price per square meter is lower than the market one), socially (it concerns cohabitation, sharing semi private spaces for the profit of the group) and ecologically (sharing spaces and utilities reduces the amount of energy use; creating a private project allows the clients to choose local and high-performance materials). In addition, the intimate relations between the clients and the architect can push the project into innovative grounds.

When constructing such a project, the architect offers the clients group guidance in determining, and establishing, their project of co-housing in the following steps: • Advising: in this phase the architect’s role is between an advisor and a mediator.

During numerous group meetings he helps the clients to define and write down their scheme guidelines (type of project,

Ce projet virtuel est une étude de cas que j’ai créé pour conclure un an d’étude de HMONP à l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris la Villette.

L’objectif de cette année était de recevoir une connaissance pratique afin d’appliquer la théorie acquise durant les dernières années au sein de différentes écoles d’architectures. Le programme comprenait des classes de gestion de projet, de construction, de programmation, ainsi que de gestion d’un bureau. Au cours de cette année, j’ai travaillé à plein temps chez Philippe Dubus Architecte, avec la responsabilité de mener divers projets et tâches, tout en intervenant sur différentes phases afin de ma familiariser avec les procédés de construction en France.

L’étude de cas met le focus sur un projet étudié cette année en expliquant les phases, challenges, forces en présence, réglementations et l’ensemble des éléments d’un projet, en plus de l’architecture proprement dite. Mon idée était d’utiliser non seulement les connaissances acquises chez Philippe Dubus Architecte, mais aussi lors de mes missions avec d’autres architectes pour le design d’intérieur et lors des différentes compétitions auxquelles j’ai pris part.

L’idée de la co-habitation est de travailler en proximité avec les clients, afin de rechercher des solutions plus adaptées à l’habitation partagée.

Le désir de promouvoir et de développer la co-habitation est soutenu par les avantages que les clients peuvent acquérir : économique (le prix par mètre carré est moindre que celui du marché), social (en partageant des espaces semi-privés au profit du groupe), écologique (partager des espaces et des équipements permet de réduire l’énergie consommée). La création de projets privés permet aux clients de choisir un prestataire local et des matériaux adéquates, et la relation privilégiée entre les clients et l’architecte peuvent conduire le projet sur le terrain de l’innovation.

• Localizing: researching a site in case of new construction or building in case of renovation.

• Programming: after individual meetings with the group members the architect defines and calculates the surface needed for each unit.

• Drawing: the architect conducts feasibility studies on the chosen site and draws sketches • Projecting: from here the scheme is more ‘classic’, providing drawings, supervising construction, depending on the contract type between the clients and the architect.

This study case was finished in November 2010, and today, since working at Ecosistema Urbano and on dreamhamar project, I realize there is further development for such projects, in a larger scale and on different issues. I would like to further investigate this kind of project by working in France and studying the legal system more comprehensively. The objective is to specialize in this and to hold workshops with the future inhabitants, helping them to construct their project by helping them to know each other, learn from one another and better understand their needs and how they can realize them.

Lors de la construction de ce type de projets, l’architecte offre au groupe de clients la marche à suivre pour déterminer et établir leur projet de co-habitation selon les étapes suivantes : Conseil : au cours de cette phase, le rôle de l’architecte se situe entre le consultant et le médiateur. Lors de nombreuses réunions de travail, l’architecte aide les clients à définir et à rédiger le plan de leur marche à suivre (type de projet, cible, besoins, localisation, etc.)

Localisation : la recherche d’un site dans le cas d’une nouvelle construction, ou d’un immeuble dans le cas d’une rénovation Programmation : suite aux meetings individuels avec chaque membre du groupe, l’architecte défini et calcule la surface nécessaire pour chaque unité Dessiner : l’architecte conduit les études de faisabilité sur le site sélectionné et dessine les esquisses Anticiper : à partir de cette phase, les étapes sont ‘classiques’ car les dessins et la supervision de la construction dépendent du type de contrat entre les clients et l’architecte.

Cette étude de cas fut complétée en novembre 2010. Après avoir travaillé chez Ecosistema Urbano sur le projet dreamhamar, j’ai réalisé qu’il y aurait de futurs développements pour ce type de projet, mais à une plus grande échelle et addressant différentes problématiques.

Je souhaite m’investir plus en amont sur ce type de projets en travaillant en France, tout en étudiant en profondeur les réglementations. Mon objectif est de me spécialiser sur ces problématiques afin de mieux comprendre le besoin des habitants et ainsi trouver des solutions réalistes ; pour ce faire, je souhaite conduire des ateliers pour aider à la construction des projets et ainsi aider les habitants à se connaître et à apprendre des uns et des autres.

Philippe Dubus is a Parisian architecture office in which I realized my professional training for part three (HMONP). The office works on a specific type of project – apartment buildings, primarily in Ile de France and the north (Le Havre, Lille, Tourcoing).

The experience of designing housing projects, especially social ones, represents a difficult task when trying to find alternatives to the strict rules of construction, alternatives that will eventually enhance the building. The challenge in realizing social housing lies in the design of simple and rational projects to cut construction costs, while maintaining real architectural quality.

While working at Philippe Dubus, I gained knowledge of the office’s working methods and of building regulations and norms - particularly in relation to housing. I worked both in project design and participated in meetings with consultants, during the formalization of documents produced by the office: building permits, details, etc.

Evolving as a project manager in competitions, or as a team member with project managers overseeing other projects, I had the opportunity to embrace many responsibilities - attend meetings, submit project status, provide technical information and more.

Philippe Dubus Architecte est une agence Parisienne, au sein de laquelle j’ai réalisé ma mise en situation professionnelle dans le cadre de la formation HMONP. Le bureau intervient sur un type spécifique de projet le logement collectif, essentiellement en île de France et dans le Nord (Le Havre, Lille, Tourcoing).

Le logement social représente un enjeu au niveau des solutions alternatives aux règles de constructions strictes qui permettent d’enrichir le bâtiment.

La problématique du logement social consiste en l’élaboration de projets simples et rationnels permettant de limiter les coûts de construction tout en conservant une réelle qualité architecturale.

Chez Philippe Dubus, j’ai acquis la connaissance des méthodes de travail de l’agence et des réglementations - notamment en ce qui concerne le logement. Je suis intervenue aussi bien lors du dessin de projet et de la participation aux réunions avec les intervenant extérieurs, que pendant la formalisation des documents produits par l’agence : permis de construire, carnets de détails...

En évoluant comme chef de projet lors des concours, ou bien en équipe avec les chefs de projet gérant d’autres dossiers, j’ai eu l’opportunité d’embrasser de nombreuses responsabilités - participer aux réunions, présenter l’état des projets, fournir les informations techniques...

With the disintegration of the traditional nuclear family as the dominant spatial fix in the Twentieth Century, a new typology for family life is needed for the city post-sprawl. The Aurora House re-conceives low-density metropolitan living by concentrating the traditional singlefamily residence into a courtyard house: By utilizing a marginal site and downsizing the conventional house by 1/3, the Aurora House sponsors more collective and ecological forms of life without sacrificing the necessary privacy of daily living. This new organization, a horizontal constellation of spaces, varies from individual to collective, while extending the exterior environment inside and expanding it socially. There, co-habitational activities may be forged between inter-generational families and friends, while fulfilling the new demands of a dispersed aging population.

In contrast to a conventional residence, the Aurora House is programmed as an inhabited landscape contained within a modernist slab: a single level compressed between a floor and roof plane. A glass wrapper is setback from the roof’s edge to create a walk-around covered terrace that activates the surrounding landscape by physically and communally connecting inside to out. Inside, the rooms are conceived as a continuous sequence of event spaces. Each room is equipped for the varying performances of daily living, framed by the outside, suggesting an architecture of simplicity and harmony between the built and the vegetal.

The Aurora House is located on an in-fill lot behind an existing tract of post-war houses overlooking protected wetlands. The site is modestly sloped, but then drops dramatically over a terraced escarpment, towards a large field, pond, and river below. The house extends the horizontal landscape inside with two transparent courtyards, bracketed by two elements of functional poché. This single plinth cuts into the ground allowing the structure to hover over the edge of the terraced escarpment, yet minimizes digging. Entered through an underground garage court, the house’s six spaces flow in a continuous loop around a series of separate bathroom and storages cores that flock and disperse to allow the rooms to be experienced as a single loft or as a series of individual rooms. Maximizing usable space while minimizing poché, each storage core contains all of the requirements of daily living, WC, shower, closets, etc; allowing each room to be experienced collectively when open or privately when closed.

Because no room is compartmentalized and isolated as in a conventional home, every room can be a living space during the day and a sleeping space at night. Continuous perimeter circulation inside parallels the covered roof terrace outside.

La maison Aurora conçoit à nouveau l’habitation de faible densité dans la ville, en concentrant la résidence de la famille célibataire traditionnelle en une maison sur cour : en utilisant un site commun et en réduisant la maison conventionnelle d’un tiers, la maison Aurora encourage des formes de vie plus collectives et plus écologiques sans sacrifier à la nécessaire intimité de la vie quotidienne.

Cette nouvelle organisation, une constellation horizontale d’espaces, varie de l’individuel au collectif, dans le même temps que l’extension de l’environnement à l’intérieur et de l’expansion sociale. Les activités d’habitation en commun pourraient se forger de manière intergénérationnelle entre les familles et les amis, et dans le même temps répondre aux nouvelles demandes d’une population vieillissante et dispersée.

En contraste de la résidence conventionnelle, la maison Aurora est programmée comme un paysage habité contenu au sein d’un pavé moderne : un simple niveau compressé entre un sol et un toit à plat. Une enveloppe de verre est enfoncée dans le coin du toit pour créer une promenade – terrasse couverte qui active le paysage environnant en connectant physiquement et collectivement l’extérieur de l’intérieur.

A l’intérieur, les pièces sont conçues comme des séquences continues d’espace d’événements. Chaque pièce est équipée pour les divers événements de la vie quotidienne, et encadrée par l’extérieur suggérant une architecture de la simplicité et de l’harmonie entre le construit et le végétal.

La maison Aurora est située dans un lot à l’arrière d’une étendue existante de maisons d’après-guerre dominant des marais protégés. Le site est légèrement pentu, mais ensuite chute radicalement sur un escarpement terrassé, à travers un large champ, un étang, et une rivière en dessous. La maison élargie le paysage horizontal à l’intérieur avec deux cours transparentes entourées par deux éléments de poché fonctionnel.

Le simple volume coupe dans le sol permettant la structure de planer au-dessus du bord de l’escarpement terrassé, qui minimise cependant le creusement. Au point de la pente maximale, la structure se met en porte-à-faux à travers le paysage qui s’ouvre au-dessous tout en découpant des cours privées dans la colline au-dessus.

En entrant par une cours d’un garage sous terrain, les six espaces de la maison flottent dans une boucle continue autour d’une série de salle de bains séparées et de rangements (servant également comme des noyaux) qui affluent et se dispersent pour permettre aux pièces d’être vécues comme un simple loft, ou comme des séries de chambres individuelles. Maximiser l’espace utile tout en minimisant le poché pour que chaque espace de rangement contienne les éléments nécessaires à la vie quotidienne WC, douche, placards, etc - permettant à chaque pièce d’être utilisée collectivement quand l’espace est ouvert, ou individuellement quand il est clos.

Puisqu’aucune pièce n’est compartimentée et isolée comme dans une maison conventionnelle, chaque pièce peut être un espace de vie durant la journée et un endroit pour dormir pendant la nuit.

Framing the central living spaces are two courtyards. Planted to continue the surrounding indigenous landscape, they are conceived as spatial dividers, like a family camp, to consolidate and share the conviviality and burdens of daily living without feeling overcrowded at night. The courtyards are excavated in plan to optimize views and passive solar gain, allowing light and air inside, while sinking the house into the hillside to maximize thermal insulation and intimacy from the urban context. At the highest point, the green roof touches the ground, extending the landscape continuum into a roof garden. The slab is heated by a geothermal heat pump run by on-site micro wind and solar power. Glass walls define the courtyards as well as the covered perimeter; operable low-e insulated glazing units are installed to counter the metaphysical shelter of the well-tempered environment. Instead, landscape itself is conceived as shelter.

Deux cours encadrent les espaces de vie centraux. Placées de manière à poursuivre le paysage brut proche, elles sont conçues comme des diviseurs d’espace, comme un camp familial, pour consolider et partager la convivialité et le poids de la vie quotidienne sans le ressentir de manière trop forte durant la nuit.

Les cours sont creusées en plan pour optimiser la vue et le gain de l’énergie solaire, permettant à la lumière et à l’air de pénétrer à l’intérieur, pendant que la maison est absorbée à flanc-de-coteau pour optimiser l’isolation thermique et l’intimité du contexte urbain.

Au point le plus haut, la roche verte touche le sol, étendant la continuité du paysage en toit de jardin. La dalle est chauffée par une pompe à chaleur géothermale qui fonctionne grâce à la micro-puissance du vent et du soleil. Les murs en verre définissent les cours autant que le périmètre couvert, un double vitrage à l’émissivité réduite est installé pour contrer l’abri métaphysique de l’environnement bien tempéré. A la place, le paysage lui même est conçu comme un abris.

Sophie is an early riser - after the shower she likes drinking coffee in front of the television.

Bruno enjoys working until late hours under the stars.

During the weekends, they like waking up with the sunlight.

Sophie is passionate about pole dancing, and she needs space to release her energy.

Bruno often works from home. As a Manga amateur he needs space to display his collection figures and use his video game console and computers.

Together, they like hosting – inviting guests and prepare dinners.

Their matrimonial life is just beginning and will evolve over the years.

Starting off from an ever changing contemporary lifestyle, and a very small space, Lighthouse offers a large living room that adapts and changes according to its ephemeral use. Lighthouse is a large room divided into smaller spaces.

Situated at the heart of Rueil-Malmaison historic center, which began to form in the late sixteenth century, like other typical plots in the area, the site is strap-shaped, deep and narrow, with a close proximity of neighbors. The buildings dominating the plots are of single volume – parallelepiped, covered with a roof of two slopes decorated with flat tiles.

The existing structures - a storage room and a bedroom measuring 9m2 each - are situated at the end of the plot, overlooking the 80m2 garden.

Based on the existing construction, Lighthouse is extended using a vertical simple and light structure and doubles its surface to the garden respecting its neighbors and creating maximum space.

The house is organized over three main levels; each floor is divided into two areas, according to an established program, while leaving the possibility to open it into one continuous space. The spaces are

Partant d’un style de vie contemporain constamment interchangeable, et d’un espace très restreint, Lighthouse offre une grande pièce à vivre qui s’adapte et se transforme selon les utilisations éphémères.

Lighthouse est une grande pièce divisée en petits espaces.

Au cœur du centre historique de Rueil-Malmaison qui commence à s’organiser vers la fin du XVI siècle, comme les autres parcelles typiques du lieu le site est profond et étroit en forme de lanière, avec une grande proximité du voisinage. Les immeubles qui dominent les parcelles sont d’une volumétrie simple – parallélépipède couvert d’une toiture à deux pentes recouvert de tuiles plates.

Les espaces existants - un cagibi et une chambre qui mesure 9m2 chacuns - se situent au fond de la parcelle, donnant sur le jardin intérieur. defined by their exposition to the outside. The great room is separated by vertical circulation made of steep and narrow staircases, placed in the width of the space that allows the physical break in space, while serving the various programs. Their light structure allows a real visual and acoustic communication while creating two types of use: an intimate one, and, when facing the garden, more open. A zenithal light highlights them. The stair’s form alters according to their uses.

The lower floor offers conviviality: the space is divided between the kitchen and the living room and opens to the outside through a wooden terrace. The kitchen, situated at the back, opens to the small living room, which can continue to the outdoor terrace and garden with a large bay window.

The middle floor is reserved for the workspace and services - bathroom and dressing room.

A large work area where the couple can share a desk. In the background is the bathroom, with a walk-in shower, toilet and sink facing the walk-in closet. installed in length, it protects the intimate space of the shower.

The upper floor is devoted to the well-being of the body - sports and sleep. At the end, there is the play area, which revolves around a metal pole dedicated to dance. When not used, it can be covered with cushions and turned into a resting spot. On the other side is the sleeping room where the bed is facing the window overlooking the garden.

L’étage inférieur offre le plus de convivialité : l’espace se partage entre la cuisine et le séjour, et s’ouvre vers l’extérieur sur la terrasse. Au fond se trouve la cuisine qui reste ouverte sur le petit séjour, et qui peut déborder sur la terrasse extérieure et sur le jardin grâce à une large baie vitrée.

L’étage intermédiaire est réservé pour l’espace de travail où le couple peut partager un bureau et les services - salle d’eau et dressing. Dans le fond se trouve la salle d’eau, dotée d’une douche à l’italienne, d’un WC et de l’évier faisant face au dressing. Installé en longueur, il permet de protéger l’espace intime du bain.

L’étage supérieur est consacré au bien être du corps - sport et sommeil. Au fond, se trouve l’espace play, qui tourne autour d’un pole métallique dédié à la danse. Quand il n’est pas utilisé, il peut être couvert de coussins et transformé en espace de repos. De l’autre coté se trouve la chambre, où le lit est face à la fenêtre dominant le jardin.

The question evoked by the BNP Paribas competition implies, first of all, a thought worthy of each of the contemporary habits related to habitat and work. Before bringing up how they interact, it is important to understand what these practices are and towards where they tend. It is a delicate topic as it relates to both the private sphere of domestic lifestyle but also the public one of the workplace. Reveal and confront these existing metropolitan situations will evoke this potential diversity. In the case of this competition, the testing ground was that of metropolitan paris: the city in which we live, we work and we stroll around every day.

The Haussmannian block is a powerful and recurring urban fabric composing the city’s landscape. In this project, we were interested in its spatial unit along with its intrinsic qualities and weaknesses: its social diversity, great density, internal courtyard impoverished of any functional usage and, finally, the monofunctionality of most parisian city blocks. As a result, we have designed &CO. &CO is a fictional building-block contemplated according to 4 non-exhaustive principles that question, each in it’s own way, the changing customs and lifestyles of our society: 1 / The mutualized spaces 2 / The métacourtyard or updating courtyard 3 / Mutating spaces or services on demand 4 / Non-stop block

Dans un contexte urbain comme celui de Paris, les questions de la fusion, de l’évolution mais également celle de la mixité ont largement été évoquées dans les récentes études entreprises pour le Grand Paris.

C’est en partant de ce constat que le projet s’est dessiné : révéler une culture métropolitaine. Sa représentation doit, certes, évoluer mais la culture partagée de la ville est belle et bien existante.

&CO est l’îlot envisagé pour répondre aux différentes questions posées par le concours. Il reprend des dimensions « standard » du tissu parisien, une orientation précise et s’impose comme contrainte avec le respect du PLU en ce qui concerne sa hauteur, c’est-à-dire 37m.

VÉLIB & ELECTOCAR

Voyageons sur le net, dans les revues, allons voir ce qu’il se passe ailleurs et arrêtons-nous sur des situations métropolitaines existantes.

Car il s’agit bien de la ville d’aujourd’hui, de ses situations urbaines, des collisions et des frottements d’usages qui la constituent. Tout ceci est bien palpable aujourd’hui, à l’état embryonnaire bien souvent mais réellement là. Reste à les révéler en les associant et les confrontant. En ceci, notre démarche se veut large dans la localisation et le choix de ces « instants volés », mais également localisée dès lors qu’elle intéragit avec le domestique.

C’est de la ville dans laquelle nous vivons, dans laquelle nous travaillons et que nous foulons tous les jours que nous avons eu envie de parler. Et plus particulièrement de l’îlot haussmannien et de son unité spatiale.

Forme urbaine puissante et récurrente de la ville, nous en avons extrait ses qualités intrinsèques et ses faiblesses : -La mixité et la richesse sociale, largement évoquées en littérature, -La densité et son rapport plein/vide remarquables, -La cour intérieure appauvrie très souvent de tout lieu de production et de richesse d’articulation. Elle est bien souvent divisée par des murs hauts qui séparent les bâtiments. Plus aucun rapport social ne peut se développer et sa seule fonction revient à accueillir les locaux poubelles et vélo.

- La monofonctionnalité de la plupart des îlots qui tendent à devenir des îlot-équipements, des îlots-Monuments ou des îlots résidentiels.

ACCUEIL & RESEAU

La question posée par le concours BNP Paribas Real Estate sous-entend tout d’abord une réflexion approfondie des usages contemporains.

Quels sont-ils ? Vers quoi et vers où tendent-ils ? C’est un sujet délicat en ce qu’il touche à la fois à la sphère très privée du logement et à celle «du bureau», plus publique. Avant d’évoquer leur mixité il est important de comprendre leur évolution dans notre société.

The mix of two architects in Paris: an office that specializes in interior design and private homes, and the other one specializing in the field of urban studies and planning. I worked with them for two months as part of a competition for Paris Habitat.

The office was both creative and innovative, with a rigorous approach involving many urban and spatial studies. I conducted independent studies and learned to integrate two levels of vision: The detail of a building and its urban integration across the district.

This housing project, located in the GPRU Porte de Montreuil (Paris), is open and generous.

The project proposes a garden unit in the heart of the plot so that all inhabitants can profit from the view. New trees create filters between different users of the plot.

The fineness of the building’s body, 5 to 10 meters wide, allows keeping optimal isolation for the heart of parcel and the housing facades.

Each housing unit reads through the facade as a unique one, different from its neighbor. Each property extends to the outside by a linear balcony.

The three daycare facilities open widely toward their interior courtyards without the safety nets disrupting the view from the apartments overlooking the garden.

The library opens widely on the corner of Rue de Lagny.

L’association de deux agences à Paris : l’une spécialisée dans l’architecture intérieure et les maisons privées, et l’autre dans le domaine de l’aménagement et des études urbaines.

J’ai collaboré avec ces deux bureaux pendant deux mois dans le cadre d’un concours pour Paris Habitat.

L’agence est à la fois créative et innovante, avec une approche rigoureuse menant des études urbaines et spatiales. J’ai conduis des études autonomes et appris à intégrer deux niveaux de visions : le détail d’un bâtiment et son insertion urbaine à l’échelle du quartier.

Cet ensemble de logements, situé dans le GPRU de la Porte de Montreuil, mérite d’être ouvert et généreux.

Le projet propose un jardin unitaire en cœur d’îlot pour offrir la vue à tous les habitants de cette parcelle. De nouveaux arbres créent des filtres entre tous les usagers de la parcelle.

La finesse du bâtiment lame, de 5 à 10 mètres, permet de conserver un ensoleillement optimal pour le cœur d’îlot et les façades de tous les logements.

Chaque logement se lit en façade comme une unité différente de son voisin. Chaque logement se prolonge sur l’extérieur par un balcon linéaire.

Les trois équipements de petite enfance s’ouvrent très largement vers leur cours sans que des filets de protection les surplombent ou perturbent les vues principales des logements. Enfin, la bibliothèque s’ouvre largement à l’angle de la rue de Lagny.

Capitalizing on nature as an instrument of prevention and cure, to participate in the pursuit of excellence in patient’s lives it the leading point of this project. The Bien-Etre (well-being) center and tactical planning aims to rethink the current functioning of the Gustave Roussy institute, specializing in the treatment of cancer, and imagine a changing environment foreshadowing of the future Bioparc campus.

Miser sur la nature comme instrument de prévention et de guérison, pour participer à la recherche d’excellence des conditions de vie du patient. Bien-être et tactique ambitionnent de repenser le fonctionnement actuel de l’institut Gustave Roussy, spécialisé dans le traitement du cancer, et d’imaginer un environnement évolutif préfigurant du futur Bioparc.

BE draws a suspended green promenade linking the tenth floor of the hospital to its base and the future campus; encouraging the patient’s getaway by offering an alternative treatment contrasting the site’s inherent tensions. At the promenade midway point, it establishes a link with the research laboratories, where to it’s end at the lower level, it absorbs the movements and flows, promoting interactions between the different users .

BE se dessine par une promenade verte suspendue reliant le dixième étage de l’hôpital à sa base ; encourageant l’évasion du patient, elle offre une alternative contrastant les tensions inhérentes du lieu.

La promenade établie en son centre le lien avec les laboratoires de recherche, quand le niveau inférieur absorbe les flux de déplacements et favorise les interactions entre les différents acteurs.

ACT makes nature as a tactical ally by using a ‘pregreening forestation’, the spatial quality between the future campus buildings is guaranteed. Until its construction, the mineral soil works as the terrain for ephemeral and light constructions, introducing a new source of entertainment in the park.

ACT utilise la nature comme allié tactique - à l’aide d’un ‘pré-verdissement forestier’ l’exploitation des espaces entre le gabarit des entreprises est garantie.

En attendant sa construction, le sol minéral est exploité comme le territoire d’activités éphémères, légères, introduisant des sources d’animation dans le parc.

What should be the starting point when planning a new town from a clean slate? The programme brief asks for a masterplan illustrating the town’s growth 20 years ahead. As much as a drawing can show a final vision of a town, it is inflexible and hardly adaptable to unpredictable events which can take place during its development. Typically, the accomplishment of a masterplan depends on the precise realisation of the built area form, fixed decades before. Furthermore, a masterplan, like a puzzle, separates the town into programmatic zones which can only function as a whole. The quality of a town depends on the interactions between these programmatic areas, and the relations between the inhabitants with their environment.

Instead of thinking about the final masterplan, we decided to research the process to ensure these relations within time. We suggest defining a series of parameters – levels of mixture, mass distribution, building regulation, space sharing, available square meter per person, energy dependence, as guiding lines for the town’s development.

These parameters, which are based on economic and environmental opportunities, establish the town’s future life style and spacial qualities. This kind of approach, inspired from maxwan’s urban plan for leidsche rijnt, allows a progressive evolution of space by permitting a participative negotiation of the design during each step of the urban development. These spatial and social components take into account the logic of economical, political, legislative and administrative phenomena which determinate the town’s genesis. They create an invisible landscape of date formed by constraints and opportunities.

Quel est le point de départ quand nous envisageons une nouvelle ville issue d’un territoire quasiment vierge ? La problématique du programme nous invite à élaborer le masterplan illustrant la projection de la ville dans 20 ans. Mais autant qu’un dessin puisse illustrer une vision future de la ville, il est complexe de préméditer un résultat face aux potentiels événements pouvant survenir durant son développement. Habituellement, la définition du masterplan dépend de la réalisation détaillée de la forme de la zone de construction, définie des décennies auparavant. De plus un masterplan, comme un puzzle, sépare la ville en zones pragmatiques, mais il ne peut fonctionner que s’il est déterminé comme un tout. La qualité de la ville dépend des interactions entre ces zones pragmatiques, et des relations entre les habitants avec leur environnement.

Au lieu de se focaliser sur le masterplan définitif, nous avons décidé de rechercher le processus capable d’assurer et d’inscrire ces relations dans le temps. Nous suggérons de définir des séries de paramètres – niveau de mixité, distribution de masse, régulation des habitations, espace partageable, niveau de mètres carrés disponibles par personne, dépendance énergétique ; comme des référents nécessaires au développement de la ville.

Ces paramètres, basés sur des opportunités économiques et environnementales, établissent le futur style de vie et les qualités intrinsèques de la ville. Ce type d’approche, inspirée du plan d’urbanisation de Maxwan pour la Leidsche Rijnt, permet une évolution progressive de l’espace tout en autorisant la négociation participative du design, à chaque étape du développement urbain. Ces composantes spatiales et sociales prennent en compte la logique des phénomènes économiques, politiques, législatifs et administratifs qui déterminent la genèse de la ville. Ils créent un espace invisible de données, modulé par les contraintes et les opportunités.

It is a long life Dutch tradition to tame nature in order to keep a constant balance, putting the picturesque forward. Utrecht, the green heart of the Netherlands, is rapidly invaded by the urban world, putting the balance in risk. The studied site – Kanaleneiland Noord – characterized by post war social housing, is withdrawn from Utrecht’s city center and has a strong lack of identity.

The project propose inserting the site with a catalyst - making the district a carbon zero by dividing its abundant public space into energy generators. Starting with the private zone where each apartment unit receives a 3x3m piece of land of its own on the roof top, through the semi-public spaces where each building shares it piece of collective natural beauty to cultivate (according to land use map) and through the public space between the buildings where production of the neighborhood constructs a new economy within its inhabitants and the ones of the city.

C’est une ancienne tradition néerlandaise de dompter la nature afin de maintenir un équilibre constant, en mettant en avant le pittoresque. Utrecht, le coeur vert des Pays-Bas, est rapidement envahi par le monde urbain, mettant cet équilibre en risque. Le site étudié - Kanaleneiland-Noord - caractérisé par des logements sociaux d’après-guerre, est retiré du centre-ville d’Utrecht et a un manque aigu d’identité.

Le projet propose d’ajouter un catalyseur au site - réduire l’empreinte carbone du quartier a zéro en divisant l’espace public abondante dans les générateurs d’énergie. En commençant par le privé où chaque unité de logement reçoit un morceau de terre de 3x3m propre sur le toit, à travers les espaces semi-publics où chacun des bâtiments devient le propriétaire d’un territoire naturel collectif à cultiver (en fonction de la carte d’utilisation du sol) et par l’espace public entre les bâtiments où la production du quartier construit une nouvelle économie pour leur habitants, ainsi que pour ceux de la ville.

The project’s site – Place des Manèges - has no distinct spatial qualities. Surrounded by plain restaurants and souvenir shops, it is a transition space crossed by thousand of tourists going from the train station to visit the chateau, and back to Paris. Highly touristic spot, it could only stay that way. The project doesn’t pretend in giving the square back to the people of Versailles but aims towards its major population – the tourists. They come for a day visit at the chateau and it’s majestic gardens through the traversable Manèges square – that becomes a place of passage in the meantime while waiting to see the monuments.

The place is monochrome, simple, uniform. The project reinterprets the garden à la Française – its monumentality and originality. Its elements (le bosquet, la topiaire, la stature, la fontaine) are being alternated, revised, reinterpreted and frozen throughout the project’s site.

On the center of place des manèges are the basin and it’s fountain, along with the statues between every arcade. The stairs are dotted with big vases. Along the maréchalerie, enormous topiaires (topiary) edge the alley until all the way to Avenue de Paris. At last, the architecture school’s courtyard reinterpret by perforated skin, the lights and shadows of a bosquet (coppice). These elements, like the ground, are nothing more than a silhouette, a flat profile of golden concrete. Place of strolling and contemplating, the project professes itself as a spectacle, a peculiar and phantasmagoric space between the daily journey and the famous chateau.

La Place des Manèges ne compte aucune qualité spatiale. C’est un site bordé par des restaurants et magasins de souvenirs, qui se trouve entre le château et la gare Versailles Rive Gauche, terminus du RER C. Chaque jour des milliers de touristes traversent cette place ou la longent. Lieu hautement touristique, il ne peut que le rester. Le projet est dédié à sa population principale : les touristes. Ils sont venus pour la journée dans un but précis, visiter le château et repartir en fin d’après-midi par le même chemin qu’à l’allez, le RER C. La place se traverse. On y flâne peu car le château et son parc restent les lieux touristiques par excellence où il fait bon se promener. Le parcours entre la gare et le château n’est qu’un trait d’union, un « en attendant...». Il s’agit alors de l’emprunter agréablement.

Le projet se veut monochrome, simple, unitaire. Le jardin à la française y est revisité dans toute sa monumentalité et son originalité. Ses éléments (le bosquet, la topiaire, la statue, la fontaine) y sont détournés, remaniés, réinterprétés et figés sur toute la zone du projet.

Sur la place des manèges se trouve un bassin et sa fontaine, ainsi que des statues entre chaque arcade. L’escalier se trouve doté de grands vases.

Derrière la maréchalerie, d’immenses topiaires bordent l’allée jusqu’à l’avenue de Paris. Enfin, la cours dans la continuité de l’entrée de l’école avenue de Sceaux réinterprétera par une enveloppe perforée, les ombres et lumières d’un bosquet. Les éléments ne sont qu’une silhouette, un profil plat en béton teinté doré, comme le sol. Lieu de déambulation, de contemplation, le projet se veut être un apparat. Un lieu étrange et fantasmagorique situé entre le voyage et le château.

The temporary heterotopic gallery is composed of a simple 10’x20’ rectangular base and ceiling (divided into 3) and 30 identical revolving shades. Each shade, sized 2’x11’, rotates on a central axis and is of bipartite nature – one side is made of a white metal panel while the other is a mirror. Adjusting the position of the shades allows the artist not only to be the master of his creation but also the director of its mise en scène, composing microclimates within the exhibition space. However, the skin can also generate microclimates within the gallery: when put on an asphalt road - the gallery’s climate turns gray, while surrounded by vegetation - the climate becomes green and when floating on the river - the climate is blue.

des volets invite l’artiste à non seulement maitriser son œuvre mais aussi à être le propre directeur de sa mise en scène, composant des microclimats dans l’espace d’exhibition. La galerie intègre les climats hétérotopiques qui fonctionnent comme un outil de perception, nous permettant de contempler le travail de l’art, la ville, le monde et l’architecture ellemême.

La surface kaléidoscopique de la galerie fonctionne comme un camouflage, mêlant l’avant et l’arrière plan. En détaillant la construction, le spectateur observe l’environnement autour de lui. Cependant, la surface peut aussi générer des microclimats au sein même de la galerie : disposée sur une route d’asphalte, le climat de la galerie devient gris ; alors que lorsqu’elle est entourée de végétation, le climat devient vert et quand elle flotte sur la rivière l’ensemble devient bleu.
