Welcome to the Thirty Fourth Annual Night of a Thousand Gowns. Reign XXXIII and The Imperial Court of New York thank you all for joining us on this special evening at The New York Hilton Midtown.

We are excited for what this evening has in store – including fabulous performances by International Recording Artist Cece Peniston, HIV/AIDS activist Jahlisa A. Ross, Drag Performance Artist Complete Destruction, and a dance performance piece choreographed by Sydney Erik Wright featuring dancers from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. We welcome all of our out-of-town dignitaries from around the United States, Canada and Mexico – it is truly an honor to have you here with us tonight sharing memories of this reign and making new ones.

To our community guests and honorees – thank you for joining us tonight and for all the support you have given The Imperial Court of New York’s fundraising and community outreach efforts throughout this reign and beyond for years.

elcome to the 34rd Night of a Thousand Gowns!

Tonight we welcome you to a new venue here at the New York Hilton. It might be a smaller ballroom, but we hope to provide you with the same over-the-top glamour, pomp and circumstances you have come to expect.

The Imperial Court of New York stands proud as a strong, diverse and important member of the LGBTQ+ community for over 3 decades. Our members have graced many events including Stonewall 50; Queens, Hudson and NY Pride; participated at AIDS Walk; Fire Island Invasion; presented student scholarships at The Center Garden Party; assisted at Gods Love We Deliver Thanksgiving; among others.

We have brought cheers to the residents of Providence Rest Nursing Home in the Bronx, served pot luck dinners at Trinity Place Shelter, and entertained seniors at Sage socials. We have also produced numerous shows and events throughout the year that benefitted many social service and AIDS organizations.

Tonight our beneficiaries are the Hetrick-Martin Institute and Hudson Pride, two very worthwhile organizations that provides critical services to the LGBTQ+ communities in New York and New Jersey.

THIS EVENING’S BENEFICIARIES Every year The Imperial Court of New York chooses one or more beneficiaries for our gala event. This year, the 34th Annual Night of a Thousand Gowns benefits the Hetrick-Martin Institute and the Hudson Pride Center.

HETRICK-MARTIN INSTITUTE The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), is the nation’s oldest and largest LGBTQ+ youth serving organization. HMI provides programming and services for more than 2,000 LGBTQ+ young people, ages 13-24, every year throughout the New York Metropolitan area. Services include emergency and basic needs, health services, arts & culture programs, and job readiness training. In 2019, HMI celebrated its 40th anniversary, recognizing and celebrating its four decades of work, and the impact it’s had in the lives of LGBTQ+ youth. HUDSON PRIDE CENTER Hudson Pride Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization that was established in the early 1990’s and serves as a home and voice for the diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) community and our allies in Hudson County, NJ. We advocate for our physical, mental, social and political well­being and create safe and vibrant spaces to gather and celebrate our lives.

In 1993, the Jersey City Connections Center was founded as a response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic providing love, companionship and necessary support services to the gay community.

Over 25 years later, the now Hudson Pride Center (www.hudsonpride.org) offers transformational health services, crisis prevention and education, and other critical resources necessary for the well-being of our LGBTQ+ community and their allies. We are humbled and honored that the Imperial Court of New York (ICNY) has chosen our center as the beneficiary of this year’s Night of a Thousand Gowns.

Hudson Pride Center (HPC) provides professional training and education to facilitate changes in attitudes and behaviors among service providers throughout the region who work with members of the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS communities. We serve on task forces and other local working groups to assist government entities in conducting local needs assessments to better identify existing gaps in care that LGBTQ+ individuals may be experiencing through unintentional, yet still pervasive, institutional marginalization. We routinely mobilize our volunteer and client base in response to calls for action on important social issues such as transgender rights, LGBT non-discrimination legislation and HIV funding.

At the heart of everything we do is our commitment to help change and save LGBTQ+ lives. We assist teenagers and young adults who have been kicked out of their homes or are bullied in schools and individuals interested in transitioning. We serve those looking for healthcare, HIV care or PrEP services and provide substance abuse education and prevention. We facilitate peer led support groups and create safe spaces for people to gather and celebrate their lives. We are here, and we want to help.

All HPC client services are provided free of charge with the incredible support of organizations like ICNY. We know that gaining access to care and support should not depend upon one’s ability to pay, but rather on need.

We also honor and celebrate ICNY, who for the last 34 years has partnered with agencies like ours. The illustrious members of The Court regularly attend and volunteer at our annual events, assist in local fundraising efforts and directly raise funds for our programs. This partnership is dedicated to not only improving individual lives but also the communities we serve each day through our advocacy efforts and on-going commitment to social and economic justice.

On behalf of our staff, board of directors, interns, volunteers, clients, members and community of the Hudson Pride Center, we want to express our profound gratitude to the Imperial Court of New York for honoring the activities and services we provide for the LGBTQ+ community.

KNIGHTHOODS Each year, the Monarchs confer knighthoods on deserving individuals for their outstanding service to the Court and the community. Four individuals will be honored this year at the Thirty-Fourth Annual Night of A Thousand Gowns.

Marti Gould Cummings is a New York City drag artist and political activist who currently sits on the Board of the Ali Forney Center.

Their work has taken them around the globe entertaining sold-out audiences. Their work in activism includes supporting organizations like the Hetrick-Martin Institute, The Trevor Project, and others.

Chris Dunbar is a multi-talented individual whose charitable and benefit work around New York includes projects with the American Theatre Wing, The Educational Theatre Foundation, and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Currently, Chris manages Industry Bar where his collaboration with the Imperial Court of New York began. Chris is extremely touched to be honored this evening and enjoys being involved in the New York City LGBTQ community.

Wendy Kaplan is the Director of Trinity Place Shelter and oversees all aspects of daily operations, program development and clinical services while ensuring Trinity Place Shelter is continually aligned with its mission to help LGBTQ youth and young adults heal and grow positively as they move toward independence and out of homelessness.

Elizabeth Schedl is the Chief Operations Officer at Hudson Pride Center. She is a community activist working for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Elizabeth has worked to educate and raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues while strengthening the Center’s services and cultural programs for both the youth and adult LGBTQ+ populations in Hudson County, NJ.

CeCe Peniston’s storybook beginning is magical in that CeCe spent most of her formative years in Phoenix, Arizona and got her first start singing before her church congregation. CeCe elevated to the level of true artist when a friend and Phoenix-based record producer, Felipe “DJ Wax Dawg” Delgado, asked her to record back-up vocals for a female rapper slated to release an album on A&M Records.

Soon after, CeCe showed her willingness to make her own individual mark in the business and landed her solo project commissioned by then A&M Records music executive, Manny Lehman. CeCe’s hit single known, today as “Finally”, was born and CeCe accomplished what all talented artists only dream of – inking a deal for her own debut album. CeCe became an international sensation and considered to be one of the most successful dance club artists in the history of the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Charts. CeCe was successful at scoring five major number one hits within three years. Her signature dance hit “Finally” reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and #2 on the UK Top 75. It became one of the biggest dance records in history selling over 3 million copies worldwide.

The first single off of her new album is entitled “Nothing Can Stop Me Now”, a title truly fitting for the next phase of CeCe’s life. The song is already gaining momentum and heating up at radio stations in New York City, Richmond, Charlotte, Augusta, Columbus, Little Rock, and Oklahoma City. Music Choice and Sirius Radio are also among the stations playing the single.

TONIGHT’S ENTERTAINMENT COMPLETE DESTRUCTION Complete Destruction has been practicing the arcane art of shapeshifting for ten years, and performing for seven. They are a member of the Imperial Court of Rhode Island at Providence, former XIV and current reigning Imperial Crown Princess: Her Most Imperial Sovereign Highness, The Destroyer of Worlds, The Unholy Priestess of the Cenobites and The Grand High Witch to Reign XXVII. They were Miss Gay Rhode Island 2015, and have headlined the Austin International Drag Festival for the past two years. Complete is a member of the Slaughterhouse Society of Boston MA. They host and perform most often at EGO Providence, and while being very bad at social media, invite you to look at the many faces they have worn on Facebook and Instagram under Complete Destruction. They are indebted to the Court System for continuously giving a strong and beautiful meaning to the art of drag through fundraising for those in need.

JAHLISA A. ROSS

Jahlove Serrano aka Jahlisa A Ross is a health educator, youth advocate, HIV/AIDS activist, androgynous model, runway coach, drag queen, background dancer, and choreographer to the stars. A Guatemalan/American native of Bronx New York, he contracted HIV a few days shy of his 16th birthday. At that point, he decided to take a leadership role among his peers and community and to be very public with his HIV status to combat the ignorance and stigma around HIV/ AIDS. He works in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention, outreach and research and he is working hard on the global, national, city and local levels to address the needs of HIV positive and HIV negative youth. Currently, he is part of a national campaign called “HIV Stops With Me”, the New York City “In Care” campaign, and the Janssen “Positively Fearless” global campaign. Jahlove uses his entertainment platform to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and education throughout the United States and beyond.

A late bloomer, Graham did not come out until he was 28 – and he has never looked back.

There were many reasons for this but in the end, as with most of us, his truth had to emerge and shine. Chief among the reasons was the relative invisibility of the gay community and a perceived lack of role models.

He learned when he came out, of course, that role models were all around him and had been for most of his life. His coming out was at the beginning of the AIDS crisis which was an astonishingly scary time for those entering the gay community.

These times refined Graham’s views of society and politics. A political and social activist for many years, he became even more so in response to the crisis with its heartbreaks and indignities by working with organizations that were, and are, responding to those who need help the most. Eventually this led him to join the Imperial Court of New York. He did so because of its mission and the panoply of programs it supports across the age/gender/orientation spectrums.

Within the Imperial Court of New York and beyond to the various realms that comprise the Imperial Court System, Graham has had the good fortune to be guided by many dedicated, committed individuals who share the common goals of helping others and making our world a little bit better place in which to live – all the while doing so by having enormous fun.

Perhaps the most significant outcome of his membership in the Imperial Court of NY was meeting his soulmate Keyth.

So significant in fact that Keyth honored him by becoming his husband in 2018.

Graham is looking forward to a fun, purposeful and successful reign. In addition, he gets to accomplish this with his best friend and husband by his side as his Empress. What could be better than that?

A LETTER FROM THE QUEEN MOTHER OF THE AMERICAS Thirty four years ago, I had the honor of crowning my son, Eagle Emperor I George and Empress I Sybil Bruncheon as the first Monarchs of New York at the historic Waldorf Astoria, and on that night New York joined the International Imperial Court System which now has chapters in 70 cities in the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico. The Imperial Court of New York has become a shining jewel in the crown of our International Monarchy for over 3 decades.

I most sincerely congratulate Emperor Antonio T Ventura and Empress Chuleta Divine on a most productive and visible reign. I look forward to the reign of my daughter and a Crown Princess of San Diego Madelyn Keyth and her husband Graham D’Craquer.

In this the 13th year of my reign as Queen Mother I of the Americas, I have been able to count on many New York monarchs as Chief Advisors and Heirs, including Empress Panzi, Emperor Tony, Empress Gefil, Emperor Tree, Emperor Henry, Emperor Jack, Emperor Rob; but none more than my beloved daughter, the Queen Mother of the North East Empress Coco LaChine who has been my right hand and my moral compass and at times has been my rock and I will always be grateful.

Empress Coco, Emperor Tree, Emperor Henry and Prince Billy and the Court of New York played a major role in my vision of having a National LGBTQ Wall of Honor in the historic Stonewall Inn which was officially dedicated during Stonewall 50.

The Imperial Court of New York has also had a big part in our national letter writing campaigns that have resulted in the Harvey Milk U.S. Postage Stamp, and the U.S.N.S. Harvey Milk, which is being built and dedicated in San Diego.

Greetings!

passion alive!

Being able to represent The Imperial Court of New York this past year as Emperor XXVIII has been a true honor and privilege. The many experiences and connections for the betterment of the LGBTQ+ community, I would not trade for anything.

Being able to take on this leadership role in our organization and community is truly special and I thank each and every member for their putting faith in me.

Over the past twelve months, we have been able to be a part of many exciting events and outreach programs, ranging from our own produced fundraisers and outreach programs (Hearts & Voices and Potlucks for Youth Shelters) to many of our community partner’s events (Tyler Clementi Foundation, Ali Forney Center, Trinity Place Shelter, Hudson Pride Center and more).

A truly high moment of the past twelve months was being able to be part of LGBTQ+ history, taking part in the 50th Anniversary of The Stonewall Riots and World Pride in New York City. As a 31-year old gay man who has many generations to thank for the privileges I have today – it was humbling to be able to participate in a remembrance of those that truly laid the path towards equality.

Forever, I will remember those that started this path and will always honor them by fighting for equality and providing a safe space/friendship for anyone who needs it.

A Legacy that started 34 years ago in 1986 in the middle of a major crisis for our community and world, The AIDS Crisis, where we became an organization of open acceptance and safety for members of our community.

Tonight we show that same acceptance and safety by being ourselves in all forms without judgement or fear tonight and by engaging and supporting our LGBTQ+ Youth of New York City and New Jersey through The Hetrick-Martin Institute and Hudson Pride Center.

Well! Let me tell you it has been a learning experience being Empress XXXIII of The Imperial Court of New York.

Empress XXXII Gaye Banter bestowed these wise wise words of wisdom to me “Each member is an essential piece of the puzzle for a successful reign” and I absolutely agree!

The ICNY membership is an awesome group of individuals all dedicated to the success of ICNY mission! It has been my honor to serve as your Empress XXXIII of The Imperial Court of New York, and Reign XXXIII, which was full of events, community service and support throughout the five Boroughs, of New York, New Jersey, and traveling all across the Imperial Court circuit.

I can’t say it enough to everyone but Thank You!!!! First and foremost, to my husband Joseph Sorsaia for being so understanding and supportive of me in my commitment to the Imperial Court of New York. On April 13th we will celebrate our 40th anniversary, and yes we made it and never had a fight! NOT! Emperor Antonio T. Ventura I have been very lucky to have a supportive easy-going partner, who learned very quickly of my strengths and weaknesses, and even though there is a big age difference between us we have almost the same values that kept us on track and driven. It has been pure pleasure reigning with you, and serving our community with love joy and goodwill.
