Waiting for Proof: Toxicity Study and Remix for solo violin Noam Faingold
Program note “Waiting for Proof: Toxicity Study and Remix” is a solo violin piece written for Domenic Salerni. The work is part of an ongoing suite of collaborations with violinists to create works that engage with the mutual musical and social/conceptual interests of the composer and performer. My piece is an impressionistic study of the harmful behaviors of public figures. I aim to do this through explorations of musical textures and moods that traditionally signify confidence. Throughout this piece, I include character markings such as “doubling down” and “with unearned confidence,” in order to explore these manifestations of overconfidence. Rock guitar solo riffs and virtuosic polyphonic textures represent overcompensation, interrupted by static or hesitant musical moments that suggest a measure of insecurity brewing beneath the surface. In other moments, punctuations of dismissive, rhythmic laughter allude to both the internal mockery that insecurity brings about, and moments when these public figures dismiss concerns through external mockery.
Notes to the performer The performer should adhere as best as possible to the written note lengths and tempos indicated. Within reason, rubato may be added. Sections indicated as rhythmically strict should be kept so and durations of harmonics may be adjusted in order to allow them to speak clearly and smoothly. Except when otherwise indicated, the correct phrasing is the one that the player feels is most comfortable considering the directions given. Some large leaps may create difficulties in phrasing. When this occurs, the performer has freeom to play the phrases in such a way as to make the passage sound and feel confident. Crescendi to dynamics of mf or louder should have a projecting tone, emphasizing core or in-the-string playing, even when flautando is indicated as the general character. It may be necessarily to transform the sound to gradually change the contact point to increase the amount of concentrated core resonance in the sound through a crescendo, releasing it through a diminuendo. "Mocking" or "laughter" passages should create great sounding contrast to the passages they interrupt. Grace notes at the end of a slur indicate arrival pitches, not rhythms. Grace notes should be played like a snare drum "flam," as a quick rhythmic gesture, though still allowing the harmony to be audible. The "+" symbol indicates left hand pizzicato.
The
Duration: 7.5'
symbol indicates to play a D 3/4 tones sharp (halfway between D# and E), seen as part of a double stop with open E here.
