BROAD PROPOSITION:
YEAR 2 STUDIO: REGENERATING
My design accommodates for the regeneration of the landscape while heavily reducing the physical impact it has on the site. It repurposes the damaged area to enrich the growth of connections, including the guests with each other and with the natural elements on the site. The design functions aesthetically and practically through qualities introduced by nature, relying on the regeneration of the site to optimise the experience of the guests. Essentially, the flourishment of the landscape creates a synergy between the regeneration of the site and the guests experience, all accommodated within the design.
SITE REGENERATION:
VEGETATION
STEEL FRAMEWORK
CORRUGATED METAL
RUSTED METAL
My design for the accommodation units achieves regeneration by allowing for the opportunity for nature to redevelop and for people to reconnect with the rich landscape. This has been optimised through the consideration of various imperatives, primarily including the consideration of circular economy, sourcing sustainable materials from local sources and heavily reducing the damage to the site. The circular economy of the design includes the prefabrication of units to reduce the site damage that construction may cause, the high durability of materials to ensure a long lifespan and lowered maintenance requirements, and the recyclability of materials at the end of the unit’s lifespan. This approach to design lowers the impact the units have on the site and on the economy, allowing for regeneration and preservation on all scales. Fundamentally, the design visually and functionally blends with the landscape to emphasise the beauty and importance of the natural world, while simultaneously allowing for the opportunity for floral regeneration to rejuvenate the site.
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE:
YEAR 2 STUDIO: REGENERATING
The short stay accommodation units combine both the artificial and natural elements on the site, creating a unique and exciting design language that harmonises the industrial architecture existing on site with the natural landscape that flourishes and weaves throughout the structure. Guests become curious as they try and understand the architecture and layout of the design, as they are constantly shrouded in either flora or natural materials. Additionally, the atmospheres of the design accentuate tranquility and isolation, achieved through sensuous qualities such as the comfortable spaces and the large sudden views to the landscape. The facilities and accommodation present in the design uniquely allow each guest to have a reflective experience and a close connection to the sites rich natural elements. Fundamentally, the unique language and flourishment of nature in the design creates a curious and tranquil atmosphere for the guests, resulting in a unique experience for the guests.

This technical unit was designed for students to analyse an existing design and propose improvements to enhance it’s sustainable qualities. The design we examined was the VCE and Performing Arts faciltiy at Northcote High School designed by KTA. Throughout this project I came familiar with the Living Building Challenge, and I implemented the required standards into my design, considering material ethics, passive heating and cooling and circular economy.

PHASE 1 YEAR 3 STUDIO: MATERIALS, SOCIETIES AND LIVING PROJECT TITLE: HYDROGENEOUS
PROJECT BRIEF: This studio asks to consider how humans relate to the materials around them, and how appropriation leads to function and purpose. We were initially tasked with choosing an object to appropriate beyond its regular purpose, then to extract qualities from the object and transform it into a building system. We were to consider how the human body relates to the new system and then iterate the relationships the system has with other living and non-living objects. The final project was to design a co-inhabitance for 16 occupants, which were both human and non-human. To achieve this, we were tasked with collaborating with 4 other students to redesign our systems to synergise with each other, creating optimal living conditions for the occupants.
DESIGN PHASE 1: Initially I tested the umbrella’s physical capabilities and functions through different actions. This results in creating an array of appropriations when considering it’s properties and structure in relation to the human form. After analysing the materiality and capabilities of the object, the modified umbrella was transformed to achieve the structural role of a roof system. The column structure that acts similarly to the structure of an umbrella holds up the tensile fiberglass and polyester, which strengthens the occupants relationship with natural elemtns such as light, air and water. This sensuous relationship has been achieved through material permiability, which was present in a generic umbrella but has been amplified in this roof system.

PHASE 2 YEAR 3 STUDIO: MATERIALS, SOCIETIES AND LIVING PROJECT TITLE: HYDROGENEOUS
DESIGN PHASE 2: The final representation of the roof system focuses on the layers in the outer skin, the woven fiberglass, the waterproof polyester and the aluminium net frame. The axonometric detail exhibits the porosity of each layer and the modes of tension that morph the shape of the roof when affected by water. Visual callouts have been made to show material and functional spotlights, including plant growth and water behaviour. The system was named “hydrogeneous” after its hetrogeneous behaviour when affected by natural elements.
CONCEPT SUMMARY: The system enriches the appropriations that can be made with the umbrella, whether it’s with natural and non-living elements or with living clients. The primary appropriations that can be made with this new system include the manipulation of water, the accommodation of plant growth and the inhabitance of smaller clients such as butterflies and bees. These functions are achieved through its heterogeneous behaviour, which is the main difference between this system and a generic roof. The various layers of polyester, tpu film and woven fiberglass are under different modes of tension, which can be changed based on the weather. So unlike a regular roof system, this one can manipulate based on the exterior conditions in a way that enhances the benefits for the inhabitants.

PROJECT BRIEF:
DESIGN ISSUE:
The focus will be on the activation of site, from the temporary to the permanent and the ephemeral to the formal. We will be looking into what forms of interventions are possible in various conditions and critiquing existing typologies. Students will be encouraged to think outside of traditional architectural modes for their projects. Initial group work will be part of the semesters deliverables. The site I chose was the Royal Mint carpark in Melbourne’s CBD.
Covid has forced people to stay home, away from family, friends, work and people in general. Society can only maintain connection through digital platforms, including social media, online learning and dating apps. Recent studies have shown connections between online living and depression and anxiety, creating the want and need for people to connect in person again. With rules in place to stop physical connection, people are forced to remain at home, businesses are shutting down and multiple industries are losing money. The broad community is struggling in these challenging times, with fears that our way of life will never return to normal.
THESIS:
DESIGN INTENT:
The design will essentially bring people back together physically while maintaining a “covid safe environment”, enforcing safe bubbles of people bounded by the structure. It will fundamentally revive the community by allowing different elements of the community to thrive, governed by the creativity of the public. These elements were ones that deteriorated as a result of covid, including entertainment, leisure, activity and trade; being digitalised to stay relevant, but removing the face-to-face quality. ultimately, the design will revive and enrich the community in a creative environment.
Fundamentally, the design will allow the public to create their own space for their own function, whether it’s a group of friends wanting to socialise, a busker wanting to perform music, or a retailer wanting to sell goods. An array of parts will be available to the public to build their own community, with moveable frames to join or seperate spaces. the freedom of creativity encourages the public to communicate, rebuilding the community’s social and economic qualities along with boosting the health and happiness of the occupants.
the colony project.
FUNCTION DIAGRAMS The process of the design follows a pragmatic method, allowing the public to construct their own community using a versatile cube frame and an array of lightweight components. The occupants arrive and circulate through
The moveable cubes circulate around a grid that randomises the experience of the occupant, creating oppertunities to connect with or separate from neighbouring cubes. Voids in the grid allow for connectability
