By WRAL Tech Wire MCNC has published a new map that shows the path that will be followed by the North Carolina Research and Education Network from the coast to the mountains.

The $144 million network expansion is scheduled for completion in 2013.

Most of the funding for the project is coming from the federal government.

However, the Golden LEAF economic development group also is providing substantial financial support - thus the name Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative.

The project includes 1,646 miles on new construction and nearly 2,600 miles of new infrastructure while stretching across 69 of the state's 100 counties.

GigaOm has an interesting story about a grant from the National Science Foundation to Johns Hopkins University for development of a 100 Gbps network. It will traffic data between the school and other locales including Google, the story says. It adds that gear from Cisco, Arista, Solarflare and Nvidia will be utilized. The piece adds details about the topography of the new network. The vision of Dr. Alex Szalay, who is heading up the project, is nothing if not ambitious: In his mind, the new way of using massive processing power to filter through petabytes of data is an entirely new type of computing which will lead to new advances in astronomy and physics, much like the microscope’s creation in 17th century led to advances in biology and chemistry. When thought of in that light, the creation of 100 gigabit per second (Gbps) research network at Johns Hopkins becomes not just a fast network, but an essential tool for research and discovery, an essential component of the 21st-century microscope.

The Johns Hopkins project is far from the only ongoing initiative.

This week, for instance, the North Carolina Research and Education Network — which is operated by MCNC (which initially was the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina) — said that East Carolina University has gotten a 10 Gbps upgrade. The press release offers details on the funding of the $144 million project.

The upgrade, the release says, will support online and distance learning programs, videoconferencing, economic development and other services. It also will encourage innovation in the state’s coastal region.

Still another recent piece of news on the high-tech, highereducation front was the near-completion of a network that will connect 63 universities and colleges in Indiana. The $35.8 million project soon will connect 21 Ivy Tech Community College campuses to the I-Light network. I-Light and Zayo Bandwidth were awarded $25.1 million from the Broadband Stimulus. Those funds were supplemented by monies from I-Light and Zayo. The release says that a new element of the project includes 626 miles of fiber connecting Ivy Tech campuses to 42 institutions already on the network. In addition, as many as 49,000 businesses and thousands of health, public safety, education and government centers in 80 communities along the route may be served, the release said.

What is extraordinary is that these announcements are ordinary.

Similar news — about a variety of projects, including the high-profile Internet2 — comes and goes on a regular basis. In totality, such advances provide an increasing percentage of the populace with higher-speed networking than what nominally is available from their ISP, at least in some area of their lives. It also, in a more indirect manner, most likely pushes the telcos and cable companies to up their capacities a bit more aggressively.

DOBSON — Surry County Schools is considering piloting a new technology policy that could become a model for the state if it receives approval from the Board of Education at the December meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Terri Mosley presented Technology Policy 10300 to the board last Monday night with the final vote expected in December. The policy would allow teachers to bring their personal technology devices such as iPads, iPods, smart phones and laptops for use at school in an effort to pave the way to allow students to do the same. Teachers would not be able to save information to their personal devices but they would be able to access and input data to the school system server and any software programs used by the school such as the Haiku learning management system.

“If they really want to use an iPad, it would allow them to combine technologies to make the best of the things available,” said Mosley.

If the board approves the policy in December, officials hope to have the internal infrastructure set up for teachers to start using their personal devices during second semester. If the pilot program with teachers proves successful, it would pave the way for students to be able to do the same in the future. Students in 11th and 12th grade would be the target group of this new project. By allowing them to use their own devices, officials hope to create an atmosphere that is similar to what happens in college.

With Career and College Promise, a new program from Gov. Bev Perdue, high school students can begin work toward a two- or four-year college degree while still in high school and will therefore not have to pay tuition for those classes. Students in this area will be able to follow one of two pathways. Through college transfer, they can earn credit toward a four-year degree. Students who complete a 44-hour credit program will be able to transfer their credit to all University of North Carolina institutions and many of the state’s independent colleges and universities. Students in the technical career pathway will earn course credits toward an entry-level job credential, certificate or diploma in a technical career. This means students will be spending more time on the campus of Surry Community College and, with their own devices, will be able to stay connected regardless of the campus.

Getting this program up and running, however, will not be an easy task for the school system. Several modifications have to take place to ensure the personal devices will be able to access the Internet through the school system’s server, thereby keeping the filters in place to block certain materials.

“We have to set up guest access at the schools so they will be able to access only unrestricted things,” said Mosley. “We have restricted access for our students and with our juniors and seniors involved in the new College and Career Promise program, they will have to have additional access. They will be able to experience what real college will be like and learn to filter and process information themselves.”

creates a smaller number of technology devices the school system will have to provide.

“Right now we’re about one computer per every 1.175 students. Financially over time in order to sustain 1:1 in the district, we need to see how this vision works,” said Jill Reinhardt, director of technology and career and technical education. “It’s about efficiency and money.”

While other school systems in the state are using different approaches to try to bring more technology into the schools, Surry County’s approach is unique.

“We’re working with MCNC which is our state connectivity provider. We have the backbone of the Internet through them. Their team is working with us on how the zone networks and the policies and procedures are going to play out so they can follow us through this journey. Nobody’s going to embark on this process quite like we are,” said Reinhardt.

“This is going to be very challenging with the personnel needed to make this take place and the fact that it’s going to require a great deal of rethinking. But it is one we think is very relevant and needed. We want to offer students an extended learning environment to prepare them for college,” said Mosley.

The restructuring of the networks and access points would start at the high schools because their wireless networks already are configured for guest access. From there, the technology department would move to the middle schools and then to the elementary schools.

Tired of trying to nab an Internet connection at tech events? One thing attendees at Tech Media’s 2011 Internet Summit can look forward to Nov. 15-16 is a high speed ”Super Connection” for wireless access to the Internet at North Carolina’s Raleigh Convention Center. So, they’ll be able to tweet, blog, and stay connected from the opening keynote to the final event.

For the thousands of gamers and spectators at the Raleigh Convention Center and the millions watching online, the recent Major League Gaming tournament that swept through the city last month went off like one of the carefully orchestrated Call of Duty maneuvers performed by the expert competitive gamers on hand.

But, as any gamer, IT expert or convention center marketing and sales team will tell you, there is so much more to the action than what you see on the screen.

For the IT crew at the Raleigh Convention Center, delivering an up to the minute, competitive and exciting experience for not only the gaming gladiators on the massive expo floor but the millions watching online meant developing creative solutions to meet both power, networking and A/V needs.

Major League Gaming puts on multi-million dollar productions in cities all over the country every week. To do that, they have to know their host venues can provide the strong IT backbone they’ll need to put on their show without a hitch.

Similarly, as the host venue for the Internet2 and Internet Summit conferences, our system has to go above and beyond what a typical convention center offers. The result is a connection at speeds of 10 gigabits per second.

These connection speeds recently allowed an innovator who invented an online communications system free of any lag or buffering to host a duet of classical musicians.

A violinist performed in the convention center while a cellist performed at Northern Illinois University — in perfect unison.

“As the way we meet and learn changes, we’re also focused on ensuring that meeting goers can access the Web from everywhere and anywhere at the convention center,” says Dave Chapman, RCC’s IT director.

Planners saw the need for advanced wireless connections

The annual Tech Media Internet Summit draws a large number of attendees. This year they will hear from more than 120 digital media thought leaders.

Tech prowess is now an important differentiator in a crowded market. The designers of the convention center in Raleigh anticipated this dawning age of Super Connection.

“This is going to be very challenging with the personnel needed to make this take place and the fact that it’s going to require a great deal of rethinking. But it is one we think is very relevant and needed. We want to offer students an extended learning environment to prepare them for college,” said Mosley.

The restructuring of the networks and access points would start at the high schools because their wireless networks already are configured for guest access. From there, the technology department would move to the middle schools and then to the elementary schools.

TGIF, and Happy Veterans Day for those in the US. Here’s a quick look at other news this week that slipped past my nets the first time around: North Carolina’s MCNC announced the completion of a 10G upgrade at East Carolina University. The extra bandwidth came as part of the $144M stimulus project expanding the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN). ECU needs the bandwidth to power its online and distance learning programs and videoconferencing and to serve as a main hub for other nearby anchor institutions.

Phoenix-based IO added a customer for its private cloud computing services. The Chan Soon-Shion Institute for Advanced Health, NantWorks, and National LambdaRail have signed a contract to leverage the company’s giant IO facility for what they are billing as the largest healthcare data center in the world. The healthcare vertical has really been stepping up to the bandwidth/colo buffet table lately.

Huawei continued its string of 100G-related news with another live test, this time on the network of Beltelecom.

The Belarus incumbent trialed the company’s 100G coherent gear on a link between Russia and Poland for 900km without regeneration alongside existing 10G and 40G wavelengths. They need 100G in Belarus already?

Limelight Networks (NASDAQ:LLNW, news, filings) took aim at the mobile space with a new product line.

Their Dynamic Site Platform for mobile allows for the tailoring of content-rich websites to those smaller screens without forcing them to use a separate mobile CMS. This is another of those managed services LimeLight is shifting its efforts toward, as it diversifies from the more commoditized side of the CDN space.
