BalsamWest FiberNET, a fiber optic broadband company owned by Drake Enterprises and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has buried a super highway in the mountains of southwestern North Carolina. The company’s wholesale broadband project is so audacious that it has been misunderstood by some and disbelieved by others –– a 300-mile fiber optic ring that has the capacity to enable download speeds of 1 TB/s one day and connects directly to the national telecommunications carrier hotel in Atlanta.
