TINY PORCH HOME
STUDIO: URBANBUILD YEAR: 2023 PROFESSOR: BYRON MOUTON WORK TIME: 6 WEEKS
The Tiny Porch Home was the winner of the URBANBuild Tiny Home competition. The URBANBuild program designs and builds inventive affordable housing projects around New Orleans. This year, rather than a full size single family home, the objective was to design a tiny home. While thinking about comfort, design, and affordability, we were also tasked with thinking about the tiny homes as a partially pre-fabricated unit and how the tiny homes could aggregate up to a four-plex. With an intricate manueverable screen, the Tiny Porch Home takes the semi-public space of the porch and transforms it into a fully public or private zone, while providing shading, light filtration, and beauty. It maximizes indoor-outdoor living and generates spaciousness with built-in furniture. The project will be built in Spring 2024 by students, including myself and then used as a home for people experiencing homeless.
As a partially pre-fabricated home, alternative construction methods had to be considered. While the floor and roof are framed using traditional wood framing, the walls use a panelized system. The interior surface is a finish plywood and the exterior finish is an MDF wood composite, separate from the panel system. The shutter and sliding door condition will be installed after the shell of the building has been completed. The interconnectedness of the indoor and outdoor space and opposite wall of millwork are highlighted in the perspective views.
Aggregating the tiny homes addresses the issue of urban density while mainaining the scale of the single story neighborhood that exists in most of New Orleans. Another strength of this scheme is the seamless fit into the context of tradtional New Orleans architecture while adding a modern flair to the fabric. Multiple options designs for the screen were conceived with the idea that each unit could select the screen they preferred. This provides variation to the facade and sense of ownership and individuality.

HOMES ON TRACK STUDIO: CORE HOUSING YEAR: 2022 PROFESSOR: PIA MENDARO WORK TIME: 6 WEEKS
Homes on Track is a collective housing project designed to foster an active and engaged community. Each home has direct access to a running track which serves as the main circulation around the complex. There is a track on each of the three floors which are interconnected by ramps. Three compact housing types are constructred using recycled corrugated metal from the nearby port. They fit into a steel grid, with the running tracks winding through the grid. Workout areas and communal outdoor kitchens are scattered along the track, creating pockets of interaction and community for the residents.

JEFFERSON ISLAND CENTER STUDIO: CORE SECOND YEAR PROFESSOR: WENDY REDFIELD WORK TIME: 6 WEEKS
Jefferson Island was once an industrial hub for salt mining and oil drilling. A tragic disaster decimated much of the island, but remnants of the factories and railroad tracks are still visible along with a historic home and gardens. This proposal reimagines the industrial footprint by mimicking the form of the factory and rehabilatating the old train tracks as a walking path through the island. The museum and archives have an industrial aesthetic with a steel frame observation deck and the entry tunnel evokes the way trains

INTERNSHIP: SUMMER 2023 MENTOR: MICHAEL BOSIO WORK TIME: 7 MONTHS
During the course of this internship I worked on a variety of projects from residential to commercial. I became proficient in Revit and learned about drawing conventions, building construction, and architectural and real estate development practices. There are 3 projects highlighted from my time at MKRED. Above, is an axonometric of the proposed retractable roof system for the restaurant, MONDAY NOLA. In addition to measuring, drawing existing conditions, and designing a proposal, I researched different retractable roofing systems and coordinated with numerous vendors about pricing, installation, and capacity. The client selected my design for construction. On the right are a few of the many interior elevations I drew for 1620 MLK hotel which will be completed in 2024. Below, are a few of the drawings from the complete permit set I drew for 126A W. Harrison, a gut renovation in Baton Rouge.

URBAN BUILD 19
STUDIO: URBAN BUILD PROFESSOR: BYRON MOUTON WORK TIME: 4 WEEKS
Tulane’s design-build program partners with local non-profits to provide affordable housing in economically challenged parts of New Orleans. This year, the program partnered with Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Crescent Care to design and build the last two units of a 4-plex. In partners, 7 schemes were proposed and the winning scheme will be built in 2024. The homes are designed for end of life care, creating a space that is a sanctuary for the infirmed as well as ADA accessible. A strong connection to the outdoors and the main space from the accessible bedroom were essential considerations. The caretakers bedroom, located closer to the entry has access to the kitchen while establishing a more private zone. The strategy minimizes building costs by concentrating the wet cores along the parti wall and mirroring the spacious plans. Both units get a front and back porch and tall ceilings to make the space feel more open. Another complexity to the project was how to connect these units to the existing units 1 and 2. This proposal continues the roof pitch of the second unit over a covered porch with a feature wall and then gradually decreases in slope.

THE CLIMBING HOUSE STUDIO: CORE HOUSING PROFESSOR: PIA MENDARO WORK TIME: 2 WEEKS
The Climbing House is a 5 bedroom house proposed for a set group of imaginary clients. The house had to be at least 5 stories and each floor had to be under 500 sqft. Diego, the rock climber, was the perfect client for the parameters, as his passion influences the design of the whole house. It serves as vertical circulation for him and any others willing to climb. Playful reading nooks, desks, and beds are punched into the walls at various points to save floor space and add intrigue to the climbing wall and facade.
