Fog, log The Universidad San Francisco de Quito has plans to develop a research center in the highlands of San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos. The site is characterized by extreme humidity, high winds, and a lumpy volcanic earth. The proposed building prototype adapts to these conditions (wood in a wetsuit) and plans for long-term management and strategies of expansion.

The exterior impression is hardened, shell-like, and resolute. The interior is light and large – an important space. It should demonstrate and establish a respect for the sustainable and specific use of materials. Since all imported materials must be shipped by boat from the mainland, their use is minimized in favor of invasive woods (each tuned to their strengths) and lava rock cladding. A hung trunk locks the trusses in place.

The project is also concerned with defining an architectural iconography specific to this place, with such a brief architectural history dependent on mainland practices.

Tiber rituals While Rome may compose a static image in the mind of the traveler, it is a radically changing city for those who live in it.

On the banks of the Tiber, this multigenerational housing complex straddles multiple scales of urban engagement and seeks to make daily life into ceremony.

The courtyard, piazza, and riverwalk are renewed in their connection to one another and are conceived as interactive monuments (nonuments) that resist spectacle by their ceremonial engagement. At times of flood, the mouth of the riverwalk amphitheater channels water into ponds in the piazza via underground ducts. This sparks a new ritualistic celebration. Events like this, as well as everyday opportunities for gathering, foster community between the resident families, who are accommodated by various unit types and sizes.

Doorstop chair In extreme suspension, bent steel and red oak flex to receive the sitter. A material language results from the process of (de)lamination.

A repurposed projection screen box was used to steam wood strips. Still warm, these were bent around a carefully planned formwork with the help of many hands. The steel seat was plasma-cut with the help of a local metalworking shop, then bent into shape with my whole body weight.

The chair sits quietly in my grandma’s bedroom.

Garden shed A steel sheet is placed in the prairie; the grass that grows around it is no longer wild.

Principles developed during the design of the Doorstop Chair are translated here at the scale of a pavilion, nestled into the grasses of Paynes Prairie.

Town wellness All play requires a magic circle, for suspended reality to operate within. An agreed upon set of rules allows for atypical behavior. Lessons from within the circle are then taken back into everyday life and applied.

This theory of play is employed in the design of a therapeutic space for gambling addiction recovery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where riverside casinos abound.

The center is composed of two new structures and two modified residential homes. The introduced structures adopt a familiar typology of the area, such that all four buildings share a neighborly impression. Inside, though, the rules of the neighborhood are suspended; each room – rectangular and gypsum-walled – floats independently within a large, shared volume. Safe and familiar spaces for growth are placed in an unfamiliar, joyful environment.

Therapy is a practice to take home.

Gulf tides A place to grieve.

Suspended walls of stone bare their deference to gentle erosive forces. Roots of fallen trees make picture frames.

Shired Island’s temporality is exaggerated and physical.

The site’s fleeting position against the tide, and its beauty, ask one to consider their own place among the sands.

Wolf dance The Tonkawa people believe that humanity originated from Red Mountain, dug from the earth by wolves.

This creation story is ritualized in their Wolf Dance, during which wolf pelts are worn and this initial birth is reenacted.

Having reacquired the site of their sacred mountain, the Tonkawa are planning to develop a center for tribe members and locals to connect with this land.

The proposed center seeks to confront the visitor with an emergence from, and return to the ground.

The center encompasses a library for culturally significant artifacts and texts, classrooms for youth and community education, and a presentation hall for large gatherings.

The castle dissolved Historic fortifications of Milan are taken as a symbol for the social barriers of life in the city. Stone walls and cladding break at the meeting of strangers.

Just North of Milan’s Porta Nuova, this hotel complex is positioned within both a historic locality and a growing internationality. At street level, the hotel tower adjoins a restaurant and courtyard with campanile.

Locals and visitors share company, break bread, dance.

Path of the bison Northwest of Rockdale, Texas, the land is streaked with swale-like landforms. Likely remnants of the San Gabriel river’s footprint, these shapes and their direction remind of human footpaths.

In this clearing, one is taken by strong gusts. Bison, once abounding, would lean into these prevailing Southeastern winds – their grazing directed by an ephemeral force.

The trail stop is a recessed streak among the other swale-like forms. A free-flowing curtain modulates the now eye-level horizon with respect to the wind. A wood frame under tension is anchored into the earth, creaking and bending as if shaped while grown. It is a place to rest in the earth and contemplate the intuitive forces which guide our movement. All things lean into the steady pressure.
