”Deep Dive into Autopoiesis” Collage | Phiscal Models To better understand what autopesis really meant, I was given the challenge to create a collage using images that relate to autopesis along with nomadism mixed within. I created two different collages. The first being very chaotic with a sense of random paths people take not knowing where the journey might take them. The other shows migration from the city to an autopoietic house.

Another aspect of this exercise was to create physical models that represent the idea of autopesis. This model had to be created using different types of paper and to not use any glue or tape. The first and sec-ond row was my prototype so I didn’t care about the connections, but only to see if my concept could work. After seeing that my concept will work, the third row became my final model, having random free flowing lines filled in spaces in-between. Creating unique space that could be used for shelter.

Throughout the MAXXI art museum, there are examples of autopoiesis, improvisation, liminality, and nomadic elements. These are not my images down below, but autopoiesis can be seen by the dynamic flow and changing form of the central staircase. Looking at the ceiling diffusers, a rhythm can be found depicting improvisation. Liminality can be depicted with the connection of spaces with the flow. And finally, nomadism can be seen as the art itself inside the museum. This museum is constantly getting new collections and relocating the old.

dy Drawdel | Render After finding these elements, we were tasked to make a drawdel highlighting the elements found with the studied building. A drawdel is a haft drawing haft model.

Autopoiesis is the stairs elevating in height, front and center. Liminality is the darker brown areas, showing the in-between. And finally, the improvisation was adding rhythm in key spots. This drawdel can be seen as art and can be hung on the wall.

The final project for this class was to design a cafe and art gallery along with incorporating the terms learned over the semester. Zareen Bedita (5th year) was my partner for this final project. Together we came up with a prototype that represented the terms quite well and used this concept as the core of our final project.

The site for this project is just off the campanile green at SDSU which consisted of 5,000 sq ft. The autopoiesis roof changes its shape throughout the structureand, showing change in growth. We improvised the orientation of the pillars along with the tables connection with the pillars. The liminality aspect is the connection between the two halls located in between the site, making the main path through the building a limital space. The nomadic aspect is college students always coming and going throughout the space. The gathering space outside invites people to use this space as they would like.

Interior Renders These renders show the cafe area of the structure, where one can purchase food and refreshments and enjoy them.

The glass curtain wall highlights the beauty of the SDSU campus, along with highlighting the autopoietic roof.

Elevation, Section The section and elevation of the structure better show the free-flowing roofs the structure has along. It also highlights the random angle of the poles, coming out of the structure with cables holding up the roof. The outside gathering space sinks into the ground to create a unique atmosphere that doesn’t cause a scene to the surroundings unless wanting to.

Interior Render This render shows the art gallery space along with some of the dining area on the other side. The art displayed shows collages and models made by our class earlier this semester.
