KLINIK BANTUAN GUAMAN UNIVERSITI MALAYA (KBGUM)

Officially launched in 2017, the Legal Aid Clinic — otherwise known as Klinik Bantuan Guaman Universiti Malaya (KBGUM) — is a project established under the faculty’s Clinical Legal Education course. As a collaboration with the government’s Legal Aid Department, the Clinic is run by third and final-year law students, and supervised by the academic staff of the faculty as well as practising professional lawyers.

KBGUM aims to equip undergraduates with the proper procedures to be observed when dispensing legal advice to members of the public. It affords real-life experience to strengthen students’ theoretical and practical knowledge of the law. Apart from giving opportunities to students, KBGUM aims to reach out to marginalised individuals and provide them access to pro bono consultations — ensuring that everyone has the same access to the law.

O OPERATION HOURS

Due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, KBGUM was closed from 18th March 2020 until further notice. KBGUM plans to resume its operations in November 2022.

However, no follow-up appointments can be arranged after one has received legal advice. The Clinic however, can provide further information, therefore it is advisable for clients to provide all crucial information regarding their case during the appointment. Additionally, the entire process is subject to all rules of privacy, thus protecting the identity and details of the clinic’s clientele.

While much effort, skill, and time is dedicated to help those who come to the clinic for advice, there are certain cases that are not taken up due to several limitations, such as: 1.Cases involving the death penalty 2.Sexual crimes 3.Conveyancing cases 4.Accident cases 5.Syariah cases 6.Cases already represented by a lawyer 7.Cases where KBGUM have a conflict of interest
