GN 'not meeting' youth mental health needs Nunavut Eighty-two per cent of GN professionals involved in a review of children's mental health services say availability is not meeting needs and 72 per cent say the quality of services isn't adequate.

These are some of the findings revealed in Our Minds Matter, which was publicly released by the Representative for Children and Youth's Office this week. One of the document's key

recommendations is that the GN should establish an in-territory facility that would allow children to be admitted for mental health treatment.

"These services should incorporate family engagement and healing and be grounded in Inuit knowledge, culture, and parenting practices," the report states.

The report calls on the Department of Health to ensure that out-of-territory mental health services for children and youth are in place when those services cannot be provided within Nunavut, and that appropriate follow-up takes place after patients

return to their communities.

The Department of Health should also deliver a comprehensive training program to provide supports to children. Communities with more than one mental health worker should have one dedicated to youth, the report further recommends.

In a written response, Angela A. Petru, acting GN director of communications, stated that several government departments are working to address mental health and well-being of children and youth in various ways.

'Worst house ever' – housing tenant Hall Beach residents worry mould, sewage backups affecting family members’ health

Public housing tenants George Qayaqjuaq and Josh Alorut are troubled by numerous deficiencies plaguing their residences, including extensive mould, and they say repeated complaints to the local housing organization haven't resulted in action.

Qayaqjuaq and Alorut are also worried about possible effects on their families' health. Qayaqjuaq's two-yearold grandson, who suffers from severe asthma, lives with him. Qayaqjuaq said he has a letter from a doctor that verifies his grandson's health issues, which could be exacerbated by mould. He passed the letter on to the community's housing committee three months ago, he said.

"They never respond or call back," said Qayaqjuaq.

Alorut and his spouse have four children, ranging from one to six years old.

Each spring, members of the household suffer from itchiness and break out in rashes.

Alorut said some nurses at the local health centre think mould could be the cause, but others aren't so sure. Either way, he's concerned about flourishing mould under his

home in a five-plex. The unit's exhaust fan and ventilation system don't work and none of the three crank-operated windows in the house will open. Although one window is shattered and there's a gap between the front door and the door frame, there's not proper air circulation, Alorut asserted.

"I tried telling housing staff to fix this, but (it's) never fixed," he said. "It's hazardous."

'Work orders processed in a timely manner' Jerome Sheaves, manager of the Hall Beach Local Housing Organization (LHO), declined to comment on specific circumstances.

"All that I can say is that all work orders are processed in a timely manner and we do the best that we can with the resources that we have to rectify the problems brought forth in front of us," Sheaves said, directing further questions to Nunavut Housing Corporation officials in Iqaluit.

Amittuq MLA Joelie Kaernerk said he plans to raise the predicaments of both tenants in the legislative assembly during the spring sitting, which starts this week.

"I will do everything I can to have these individuals' con-

cerns heard. This is a serious issue, especially the children's health," Kaernerk stated to Nunavut News.

Terry Audla, president of the Nunavut Housing Corporation, said he encourages tenants to make repeated contact with their local housing organization if they're certain housing deficiencies are impacting their lives or the structural integrity of the building.

"I encourage the tenant to keep the LHO informed. Call in and physically show up in the office and make sure that it gets addressed," Audla said.

"Put emphasis where emphasis is needed."

Hall Beach has $247,000 designated for modernization and improvements of its public housing units in 2019-2020, according to Audla.

The Housing Corporation estimates 80 per cent of its 5,400 residences Nunavutwide are affected by mould, but much of it is "relatively minor," Audla said. Approximately 60 to 70 per cent of public housing units have been inspected so far.

Local housing organizations have to prioritize urgent plumbing, heating and fuel tank issues before they deal with mould, particularly smaller incidences – within a 70 cm by 30 cm area. In

This is the mould in one of the three bedrooms in George Qayaqjuaq’s A-frame public housing unit in Hall Beach. He’s worried the extensive mould around the house is worsening his two-year-old grandson’s asthma. “Where I live is the worst house ever,” says Qayaqjuaq. those cases, tenants can wipe away the mould themselves with household cleansers or even soap and water, Audla said. Mould on the outside of units isn't as pressing as mould inside, he added.

"At some point they (LHO staff) will get to addressing the mould remediation aspect," he said, adding that

mould removal training has been provided to housing maintainers in communities and new homes have improved ventilation to prevent mould.

That's not reassuring for Qayaqjuaq, who not only has extensive mould but his sewer tank has overflowed on multiple occasions – again on May 19 – and it's not due to a lack

of pump outs by the hamlet, he said. As well, smoke escapes inside the house from the chimney, heating fuel is dripping onto the floor and the leaky windows allow rain to pool in the sills.

"This house needs major renovation," Qayaqjuaq said.

Arctic Fresh, an Iglulikbased online retailer that brings groceries and other products to Nunavummiut, is ambitiously aiming to serve all of Nunavut, perhaps as soon as next year, says CEO Rhoda Angutimarik.

The company, which is currently operational in 13 communities, recently earned a social enterprise award through Startup Canada, an organization that supports and promotes entrepreneurs.

"It means a lot to me," Angutimarik said of the award. "I'm very honoured to have it. Helping (others) means a lot to me ... we're trying our best to provide good, nutritious, affordable food to families all over Nunavut."

The business has realized rapid expansion since launching in January 2017. Because Arctic Fresh sources food and general goods from suppliers in Ottawa, Angutimarik and her spouse Merlyn Recinos started out using a friend's garage for temporary storage in the nation's capital city. It wasn't too long before they had to acquire a warehouse and hire more staff.

"It kept growing and growing ... I'm surprised. I'm happy. I'm thrilled," Angutimarik said, adding that her company now employs up to eight people full-time.

In addition to groceries, Arctic Fresh added a broad range of wholesale household products that could be ordered during sealift last year.

"It went well so we're doing it again this year," said Angutimarik, who has been a school teacher for 13 years and had no previous business experience prior to this venture.

Outside of sealift season, Arctic Fresh has an arrangement with Canadian North to fly cargo into communities.

Despite the expanding demand, it hasn't all been smooth sailing. Becoming officially registered with Nutrition North Canada was challenging, Angutimarik admitted. She was determined to get it done, however, and she and Recinos eventually succeeded.

"There are times when (customers) come to me and (offer) thanks and tell their stories. It makes me want to work even harder for them," said Angutimarik.

Students benefit from science fairs Ignite the potential in youth, says association president

An Inuksuk High School student is reaping the rewards of participating in the first regional science fair in the Qikiqtaaluk in almost 20 years, and then the CanadaWide Science Fair (CWSF).

"It was such an amazing experience. I'm so glad that I got to participate in such a thing. I met so many different people who were like-minded, who really wanted to change the world in a positive way," said Penelope Armstrong about the national fair held in Fredericton, N.B. May 15 to 17.

"It was so nice to be around people who were similar as me, but who also were very different, and were all eager to share their ideas."

Roughly 500 students from across Canada participated.

Further, Armstrong explains science fair participants had to pick an award and apply for it.

She chose SHAD – a 27-day STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) and entrepreneurship based summer enrichment program at a university.

"Four different judges came during judging day and I had to present my project, explain why I deserved the SHAD (scholarship) and during the award ceremony, they called my name," said Armstrong.

Her project was one of the top three of six regional projects at the Qikiqtaalummi Science Fair and addressed the question "What is in your

water?" by analyzing Iqaluit water from various locations for pH, alkalinity, chlorine, and hardness.

"Kids in Nunavut have great potential, as any educator would say," said Wayne Robinson, Clyde River's Quluaq School science teacher and president of the Qikiqtaalummi Science Fair Association.

He says science fairs ignite that potential and motivate students to do better at their academics.

He points to Grade 9 Quluaq student Nikita Hainnu, who took home the Ted Rogers Innovation Award with her project Solar Cell Phone Charger at the regional level.

"She encountered a problem, and she was very tenacious, she pushed through and found a way to solve it," said Robinson, adding Hainnu's tenacity in working on her project led to innovation.

While the Qikiqtaalummi Science Fair Association is new this year, and resurrected the regional fair after almost two decades since the last one, Robinson and fellow board members – Clyde River's Rohan Hollingsworth and Iqaluit's Steve Penney, Tara Vandeveer and Rick Armstrong – hope to see more schools participate next year. Quluaq and Inuksuk were the only two schools to participate.

"It's a small start in the right direction," said Robinson.

The board members will debrief and hope to help other schools and science teachers in the region to get motivated.

"We really want to expand now that we know it can be done. We'll look into a drive

to push all the communities to join in," said Robinson.

As an example, Quluaq School held its first science fair in 10 years this year, which saw more than 35 projects designed and executed by students. The community came out in full support, said Robinson.

Inuksuk High Grade 12 student Alysha Lippert and Grade 9 student Lena Chown also attended the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

"My time at CWSF has

been, to say the least, a privilege and an honour," said Lippert. "I have felt so lucky to have been given the opportunity to meet other young Canadians from across the country; to have learned and grown from the projects of others, as well as my own, and to experience the events, cultures and insights that the fair has to offer."

Chown adds, "CWSF has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I've gotten the chance to meet so many smart

and amazing people who have really opened my eyes to a whole new world of science."

Fundraising made attendance at the national fair possible.

"With generous donations from corporate and private sponsors, we sent five individuals, a delegate, a chaperone and three innovative young scientists, to this premier science fair," said Robinson.

Contributors included: World Wildlife Fund Canada, Kakivak Association, Order of

the Royal Purple Iqaluit, Mary Anne Lenio, Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council, Armstrong Graphics and GoFundMe donors.

Armstrong encourages all students to get into science projects.

"Even if you are not interested in science, it showed me what university is going to be like, and all the different people out there, because Iqaluit is kind of isolated sometimes. I definitely recommend it," she said.

In Nunavut's old and overcrowded public housing units, mould is a constant worry. The Department of Family Services says it is the number one obstacle to keeping homes in good shape.

We're surprised, then, that Nunavut Arctic College is only now reviewing the housing maintainer program with the possibility of adding mould remediation to the curriculum. What took so long?

The housing situation in Nunavut is a constant crisis, with mould aggravating the lack of supply and overcrowding. And there's not nearly enough money to fix any of these problems.

Often, the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) faces an uncomfortable dilemma: do you fix or replace?

Debriefing sessions Northern News Services

Several times I have reminded my wife to make sure and go through a debriefing session to minimize vicarious trauma occurring with her. Nine times out of 10, we are seeking the session to be done by a 'professional', someone with credentials on the wall and that's okay when in fact we can do this with careful considerations. Let me see if I can shed some light.

The term 'vicarious trauma' simply means the projection on you of the individual's situation you are dealing with. There are times when we become so involved in hearing some of the details of the circumstance that we actually feel the trauma that was experienced by this distraught person, and some of the stuff hits us pretty hard.

We may not realize it during this brief talk, but it enters your psyche and emotional domain and stays there until a trigger goes off.

So many times we are told to let it out, talk about it and let go, but pride and guilt keeps the trauma within. When this is allowed to pile up, something is said and we blow up with dire results. You've read in previous issues how words can never be retrieved or taken back.

Once you've said something, it is done.

One of my favourite things to do in regards to debriefing is to go to our cabin and stay a night or two and relax and unwind as it were.

heart beat, no immediate pressures, no telephone or television to distract us. After a good meal and a quick tour of our space, we sit and talk about the week and how it affected us individually. This exercise is just to ensure we keep nothing inside or let it build-up, instead releasing as soon as possible the unfortunate experience of the people seeking guidance and assurance.

In my view, people are strong and have the ability to self-analyze, but not all of us are capable. We men like to say and think we have everything under control, but in fact are the most stubborn when it comes to debriefing and talking about our situations and circumstances.

Our pride gets in the way and hinders our growth as individuals, but we soon learn that by helping ourselves we become more aware and are then able to help others.

I hope we understand that this is about not allowing stuff to build up inside, that it is wise to talk about it and then to let it go.

Nutrition North worsens food insecurity We really don’t know what this program is doing, says report co-author

Food insecurity in Nunavut's 10 largest communities rose by 13.5 per cent during the transition to Nutrition North Canada, which offers subsidies to retailers, from the Food Mail Program, which offered subsidies for shipping via Canada Post.

This hike in the percentage of food insecure households from 33.1 to 46.6 per cent took place between 2010 and 2014, according to the study titled Food Insecurity in Nunavut Following the Introduction of Nutrition North Canada, published May 21 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"If anything, this is an underestimate," said Andree-Anne Fafard StGermain, who co-authored the study with Valerie Tarasuk and Tracey Galloway.

"It's the 10 largest communities. And it's not like the sample is representative, even of those 10 communities. If we were to include all 25 communities in Nunavut, we'd probably have way higher rates if we think of what came out of the Inuit health survey in 2007 with rates of 60 per cent and above."

The study – which took the authors more than two years of honing in on the available data – makes clear that people are not able to meet their food needs.

"It's a different way of saying what's been said for many years. There have been so many groups that have criticized the program and made recommendations on how to improve it. If (the program) was really effective those rates

probably wouldn't be going this high, wouldn't keep creeping up," said Fafard St-Germain The study does not definitively state the program is to blame.

"But we wouldn't expect things to be getting worse," she said.

"The government is saying there's more and more food being shipped to those communities. How can that be true while we see rising rates of food insecurity? How can those two things co-exist at the same time? Well, we don't really know who is accessing that food. Is it possible it's a very specific segment of the population accessing that food, while for the other segment things are just getting worse?"

Not all can afford to buy food Fafard St-Germain makes the point that just because Nutrition North does bring the costs of some foods down, it doesn't mean people can afford to buy it.

She also says a program like Nutrition North can't be expected to bring Nunavut food insecurity rates down to the national level.

The authors are interested in determinants and consequences of food insecurity, and their relationship to policy initiatives.

Fafard St-Germain says Nutrition North is the only federal initiative in the country that aims specifically to improve people's ability to afford and access food.

"Food Mail had been in place for a very long time. It's kind of a landmark in policy landscape, for the North especially," she said.

She adds the hope is the study can be an advocacy tool.

"To say, 'We really need Nutrition North to be evaluated against a more tangible outcome, something that is more meaningful in terms of people's ability to put food on their table,'" she said.

"This kind of model of food subsidy has been in place for over 50 years, the Food Mail program and then Nutrition North. The rates of food insecurity have always been very high ... and worse now.

"Maybe it's time we move past a food subsidy program and start thinking of the other kind of actions that are needed to meaningfully and sustainably bring those rates of food insecurity down.

"We wanted to really bring forward this notion that we really don't know what this program is doing."

A scathing 2014 report from the Office of the Auditor General stated essentially the same thing.

The federal government held extensive consultations throughout the North beginning in 2016, and communities shared their needs and ideas. In December 2018, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade Yvonne Jones travelled to Iqaluit to announce changes.

Some changes were made to the $99 million program's subsidy rates and food eligibility list, but the retailer subsidy structure remained.

"I think a lot of people have a lot of ideas how to improve it, but the extent that they're really listened to is questionable," Fafard St-Germain.

Embarking on a space odyssey

Sanirajak/Hall Beach Students explored space and science during Odyssey Week at Arnaqjuaq School in Hall Beach earlier this month.

With two visiting Actua instructors in the community to help celebrate the special theme, the school was opened up to residents to experience some of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workshops as well as the hands-on challenges relating to the phenomena of space. For example, there was a demonstration that simulated the Canadarm, which is attached to the International Space Station. At Arnaqjuaq School, the "Canadarm" was constructed out of cups and string and it was used to pick up a rocket that was printed on a 3-D printer.

Mittima Food Bank Society needs a home

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet Every two weeks the Mittima Food Bank Society provides, on average, 100 packages of food to support families in Pond Inlet.

The society of volunteers, operating officially since August of last year, has no home, with the local Northern and Co-op delivering fresh foods to the community hall, where seven volunteers distribute staples such as flour, eggs, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, soups and other items, explained board member Salah Abouelnaga.

"It's family support," he said. "It depends on family size. Up to nine get one package and more than nine get two."

On May 18, 86 families – roughly 460 people – in the community were provided with packages. The community had a population of 1,617 at the 2016 census.

Abouelnaga says the society hopes for support from the Government of Nunavut for premises, where it would like to run a soup kitchen, along with the food bank.

"Our ambition is to have a place, with a kitchen, so people have country food, not only store food. So the people will be happy, with more interaction in the community. It's good for people, good for the community," said Abouelnaga.

Currently, the society, made up of five members, is serving food packages for the community with $55,000 from the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, $62,000 from Baffinland Iron Mines Corp., $9,322 from the Northern, and donations from Arctic Co-op, the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, Arctic Kingdom, as well as other fundraising efforts.

Bears looking healthy

Kugaaruk With 18 of 22 polar bear tags spoken for in Kugaaruk, the harvested animals seem to be in good condition, according to Raymond Kayasark, chair of the Kurtairujuark Hunters and Trappers Association in Kugaaruk.

"They're pretty healthy. I haven't (heard) anybody complaining about a polar bear with no fat," Kayasark said when asked about concerns relating to bears losing weight due to effects of climate change on their habitat.

The bears generally survive on seals, but they will also consume birds and birds' eggs, among other things, said Kayasark.

"They're good hunters," he said.

There is, though, the rare polar bear that struggles to catch food for prolonged periods and is skinny as a result, he added.

The recently harvested predators have been tracked relatively close to the community, although in places with rough ice it's not possible to pursue them on snowmobile, Kayasark noted.

Busy May for Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik Grade 6 class

Iqaluit Jason Hatt's Grade 6 at Aqsarniit Ilinniarvik class has been busy this month.

They put the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principle of avatittinnik – respect and care for the land, animals and environment – into action.

"On Wednesday, May 15th, the class decided to make this a reality by cleaning the grounds on and adjacent to the school building. Gloves and garbage bags were provided to make this initiative possible," said principal Brian Manning. "They did a terrific job and have since challenged the other classes at the school to make a similar contribution to the environment."

Most recently, Hatt welcomed author Aviaq Johnston to their classroom.

"They had been studying her book entitled Those Who Run in the Sky," said Manning. "The students were excited to meet her and to discuss the writing process with her. We thank Aviaq for sharing her time with our Grade 6 students and for her efforts on behalf of Nunavut writers, present and future."

Johnston's second book, Those Who Dwell Below, is soon to be published.

Wii day at the library

Ikaluktutiak/Cambridge Bay The after-school drop-in program at the May Hakongak Community Library featured some physical activity and video games on May 21.

Librarian Maria Raillard donated a Nintendo Wii video game system. Youth were able to act out and play soccer, ten-

nis, Guitar Hero, Mario Kart and use a dancing mat, as the Wii is interactive. Access to video games won't be a daily privilege, however – the emphasis will remain on reading, Raillard acknowledged. To that effect, the library is well-stocked with books written in the Inuit language.

"We have them in bilingual and also just in Inuinnaqtun," said Raillard. "We're encouraging kids and adults to come and read those kinds of books to help the kids develop language and keep their native language."

A Father's Day craft session is also coming up soon, she added.

Pang fishing derby a success

Panniqtuuq/Pangnirtung The community of Pangnirtung came out in force for its fishing derby May 4.

It was a double derby – with sculpin fishing in Pang from Kijjiniq to Nuvuattiaq and char fishing at Ammituq Lake outside the hamlet. The derby in town was for people without snowmobiles, said Corey Alivaktuk.

"It went well," said Alivaktuk, who along with Patrick Kilabuk, measured the char out at Ammituq Lake.

The derby ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alivaktuk says there were about 120 fish measured on the nice, sunny, calm day.

The top three winners for the adult category are: Abraham Keenainak, with a 63.9 cm char, won $7,000; Joanne Kilabuk, with a 60.4 cm char, won $5,000; and Eena Angmarlik, with a 58 cm char, won $3,000. In the children's category, the winners are: Jayden Mosesie, with a 59 cm char, won $700; Janae Keenainak, with a 53.9 cm char, won $500; and Jenna Nowyuk, with a 53.5 cm char, won a bicycle.

Kitikmeot sees 22 graduate ᓄkᓴNKusi

Environmental technology, office administration and early childhood education specialists emerge in Cambridge Bay and Taloyoak

Nunavut Arctic College programs have bolstered three fields by fostering 22 graduates in the Kitikmeot.

There were 12 office administration grads in Cambridge Bay in late April and another three in Taloyoak.

Kitikmeot campus staff also guided five students to their environmental technology diplomas and led two students to their early childhood education diplomas.

Kathleen Hokanak not only achieved her office administration certificate, she earned honour roll status. Fresh out of high school in 2016, Hokanak had an interest in the office administration program but it wasn't being offered in her community until the fall of 2018.

She wound up being hired by Qillaq Innovations to fill an office job in the meantime.

"I was overwhelmed with that," Hokanak said of the employment opportunity, but added that she didn't abandon her ambition to fur-

"There was so much more to (Microsoft) Word so I got kind of confused with it," admitted

Hokanak, who also earned the academic award for the office administration program even though she continued to work while pursuing her college studies.

She plans to remain with Qillaq

Innovations for the foreseeable future.

"I really enjoy working here. It's a nice group of people to work with, they're fun," she said, adding that her boss is very understanding.

A sure sign of spring is the community carnivals held across Nunavut. In Cambridge Bay, it's the Omingmak Frolics that brings residents together for entertainment and amusement.Lead-up events, like the $10,000 community bingo, started on May 3 and the final activities concluded May 20, with a volunteer appreciation barbecue May 25 at the community hall.

Many family activities with great food, music, games, races like the past "Sports Day" held in Cambridge Bay each spring.

Springtime weather brings many brown faces – wind tans, they call it raccoon faces. It was great to see visitors from nearby Kugluktuk participate also. Ikaluktutiak is known as one of the friendliest welcoming communities in Nunavut.

Simply wonderful magic! This year at the 2019 Omingmak Frolics, residents of Cambridge Bay were amazed to have magician Ron Guttman from Thornhill, Ont., entertain all ages with his tricks. Many left with big smiles and curious about how he did his tricks. Ron we hope you had an experience of a lifetime traveling to the Arctic. Quana for the laughter and smiles. Safe trip home.

Fast and furious racers! Snowmobile races are one of Cambridge Bay’s Omingmak Frolics’ popular events, and this year the winners of the Women’s Open Cross Country snowmobile races were: 1st Kelsey Maniyogina, 2nd Catherine Anayoak. These ladies were also executive members of the Omingmak Racing Committee who worked tirelessly to organize this year’s races, fundraising and meetings and keeping the records in order. A lot of hard work and volunteering paid off for these two hard working ladies. Congratulations girls!

Bingo! Elders had fun playing bingo during the Omingmak Frolics celebrations, at the CCC (Continuing Care Centre) May 20, with a few prizes and a light lunch. Always nice to visit our elders there, great staff, they sure look after their elders!

Look at these little racers! Too small! Children in Cambridge Bay each year enter the 120 mini snowmobile races during the Omingmak Frolics. First prize went to Brady VandenBrink, second to Neveah Emingak, third prize to Samaya McCallum. They each won cash prizes. Congratulations kids.

Home cooking must have done some good for Iqaluit.

The Iqaluit Huskies won both of the banners at the Nunavut 18U Volleyball Championships on home soil earlier this month as the girls beat Rankin Inlet in straight sets to win the title while the boys defeated Gjoa Haven for their gold medals.

coached the Huskies girls to victory and said it was a tough straight-set win.

"We played them in the round-robin and we beat them in three sets," he said. "They have a strong team – just as strong as we are – and they're very well-coached. I think the home crowd and the momentum we had got us through."

It was a perfect weekend for the Huskies recordwise as they won all of their matches and almost in terms

Football comes to Nunavut Iqaluit Yes, you read that right – football is coming to the territory.

Volleyball Nunavut and the Canadian Football League are teaming up to host a flag football youth clinic and coaching symposium in the capital from May 31 to June 2 at the Arctic Winter Games Arena. The youth symposium is open to anyone born between the years of 2002 and 2009 and they will be split into

"I've been lucky with this group," he said. "They've played together for a long time and they know the systems and they know what to expect from each other.

There was just one new player this year and Stevenson said she's already showing she'll be a player for the future.

"She's only in Grade 8 and she's tall with some good skill," he said.

Stevenson had a second team in the tournament, known as Inuksuit, and while

two groups: U14 and U17. The first two days of the clinic will be spent learning the rules and basic skills, with the final day being a chance to put everything into motion with games being played.

The coaching symposium is open to anyone 18 and older, with the first two days being used to learn the rules and strategies involved while the final day will see the coaches work with the youth teams during their games.

Today, May 27, is the final day to sign up for both sections.

Award winners wanted Nunavut The annual Sport and Recreation Awards banquet will be held in Iqaluit this coming October, with plenty of people to be honoured for their work in the field.

Those awards include four being given out by the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN): One Ocean Expeditions Youth Leader, Community Organization, Baffinland Iron

"She played her last game and she went out a champion, which was the best way to go out," said Stevenson.

"We're hoping to defend our title next year and we have a lot of Grade 11s who will be making up the core of our team next year."

Nominations are open and will be accepted until May 31. The nomination form is available at the RPAN website.

Keynote speaker announced Nunavut In addition to the award winners at the Sport and Recreation Awards banquet, there is always a keynote speaker and this year's guest is someone who's well-known to the territory.

Russ Sheppard was announced as this year's keynote speaker by the Recreation and Parks Association (RPAN) earlier this month. Sheppard is known as the teacher who introduced lacrosse to Kugluktuk in the early 2000s and was the inspiration behind The Grizzlies, the movie which chronicles the growth of the sport in the community and how it helped improve the lives of young people in the community.
