Air Force and RCMP delivering Toys for the North

As part of the 11th Toys for the North Campaign, the RCMP partnered up with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) who dropped off a plane full of toys in Iqaluit’s RCMP Hangar, which will be then distributed to various communities in Nunavut.

Every year the RCMP teams up with the RCAF and various toy companies to help bring toys to Northern children for Christmas, something V Division Commanding Officer Amanda Jones says she is thankful for.

“It’s a very exciting, a great initiative to bring toys up for young people up here in Nunavut, I think its just incredible,” said Jones. “The kids deserve it, they need a Christmas.”

This year the children of Iglulik, Sanikiluaq and Coral Harbour will be getting presents. Pond Inlet will also be getting a special set of gifts in the form of hockey gear. As of Dec. 7, officers and volunteers were still wrapping presents.

The RCAF and RCMP feel particularly warm about Toys for the North in Nunavut given how

much it costs to buy and ship goods to the territory.

“When you think of how much it costs to transport stuff here, if we could help out and get stuff here for free it’s great,” said Acting Deputy Wing Commander Jenna Simpell, who flew in with the toys being dropped off in Iqaluit.

For Simpell it was also a chance to see another part of the RCAF’s operations she doesn’t normally see.

“I’m a logistics officer so I don’t really get to see this side of stuff. For me it was really interesting to see the Air Force in action, doing good for Canada, it’s an interesting and unique experience,” Simpell said.

She later adds the RCAF is excited to take part in Toys for the North and to be a part of Operation LENTUS, the latter is to help purify Iqaluit’s river water as part of the ongoing water crisis aid.

Toys for the North has been bringing toys to remote Northern regions since 2010, and despite recent challenges presented by Covid-19, it continues to press on.

In addition to Iqaluit, other hubs to drop-off toys for Toys for the North include Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL and Thunder Bay, ON.

Inuit Special Constables and their sled dogs celebrated Qikiqtani Inuit Association and RCMP unveiled a new monument in Iqaluit Dec. 2

The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) and the RCMP unveiled a new monument dedicated to the RCMP’s Inuit Special Constables and their Qimmiit (sled dogs) in front of the RCMP’s V Division Headquarters in Iqaluit on Dec. 2.

Featuring an Inuit Special Constable and a sled dog, the life-sized statue in front of the RCMP building was carved by Inuit artists Looty Pijaamini and Paul Maliki.

“V Division RCMP is honoured to have had the opportunity to work with QIA and the Inuit carvers on this incredible project that will recognize the courageous work of the Inuit

Special Constable and the qimmiit,” said V Division RCMP Commanding Officer Amanda Jones.

Jones stated that it was the Inuit Special Constables – and those Inuit men and women who gave their aid before the role was established – that ensured the young RCMP men were able to perform their duties, guiding long patrols by dog sled and by boat.

“Without them, the RCMP would not have survived,” Jones added.

QIA president Olayuk Akesuk praised the monument as another step towards reconciliation as outlined in the Qikiqtani Truth Commission report, specifically recommendation three. “Since 2010, we have been implementing the recommendations com-

National non-profit meets with Iqaluit’s Black businesses owners

A non-profit, charitable organization for Black business owners in Canada reached out to Nunavut’s Black business community for the first time in Iqaluit on Dec. 3. at the Aqsarniit Hotel.

The Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA), an Ontario-based national organization, came North to showcase it’s Business Advisory Implementation Development Services program, designed to offer support to Black business owners with marketing, staffing and tax law.

Nadine Spencer, CEO of the BBPA, said Nunavut’s relative isolation and low population has previously hindered networking opportunities between Black business owners.

“They feel a little isolated,” she said, “it’s one of the things we want to be seen. We want to make sure we bridge that gap.”

The owners of one of Iqaluit’s Black-owned businesses, the Nunavut Wellness Spa were excited to have this opportunity to connect with the BBPA. “It’s exciting they took the initiative to come up and see what they have to offer,” said Patience Sibanda, one of two owners of the Nunavut Wellness Spa in Iqaluit, alongside Tatenda Chimhanda.

Chimhanda noted many Black-owned businesses in the territory are smaller enterprises and there aren’t many Blackowned businesses with a large presence in the territory.

“Nunavut being the land of Inuit, there is a lot of support being given to Inuit businesses which is very essential,” Chimhanda said, noting that the two have received a warm reception to their business, even teaming up with the Government of Nunavut and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association on some projects.

While the isolation is one of the things which makes the situation different for Black-owned businesses in Nunavut, one of the similarities with the south, Spencer noted, is the lack of access to capital.

“Whether you’re in Nunavut or Ontario, or Halifax or Winnipeg, it’s the lack of access to capital, lack of access to networking, lack of resources,” said Spencer.

Sibanda and Chimhanda first got the idea to start a spa in Iqaluit when they saw a gap in wellness services in the territorial capital.

“In the past we’ve had wellness practitioners, but we’ve had a vision to build almost a one-stop shop for people to get their aesthetics, acupuncture under one roof,” said Sibanda.

“Our business being Black-owned has been welcomed in Nunavut, in Iqaluit and we really do appreciate that we’ve been welcomed to this place and we’re able to provide those services to everyone and especially Inuit,” said Chimhanda.

Former Inuit Special Constable Lew Phillip, born 1947, spoke in Inuktitut and recalled life in Arctic Bay decades ago.

He reminisced on regularly meeting with RCMP officers in Pond Inlet, the nearest police station at the time, sheltering and helping feed the officers when they were in Arctic Bay. “They were clothed and fed by the people of these communities. Moving forward he’s hopeful and wants to move forward beyond all the painful experiences that happened in the 40s, 50s, and 60s when there was the culling of the dogs,” interpreted RCMP Cst. Pauline Melanson on behalf of Phillip.

From the early to mid-20th century Inuit Special Constables accompanied RCMP members serving as translators, guides and generally helping southern RCMP survive in the Arctic.

Hunting tags expected to help Kinngait deal with rising bear encounters Much later formation of sea ice part of the problem, says community’s mayor

Kinngait residents terrified by polar bears repeatedly coming into the community since early December may soon get a break as a dozen polar bear hunting tags are available for distribution.

“It’s going to be a big relief when people find out that they can hunt polar bears once again,” said Mayor Timoon Toonoo.

Numerous residents have reported sightings and encounters involving single and multiple bears over the past several days.

Toonoo said he heard of one incident where children were playing outside a home when a bear approached. An adult quickly ushered the youngsters inside, picking up and carrying one of them in the rush to ensure their safety.

“It was a very close call,” Toonoo said, adding that the bears most often come into town at night.

The community’s conservation officer left his position in October, according to the mayor.

The consequent disruption in communication resulted in the Aiviq Hunters and Trappers Association (HTA) being unaware that 12 polar bear tags were accessible, said Toonoo. The community was under the impression that all the tags had been used.

He attributes the increasing interactions with polar bears to climate change.

“Global warming is affecting us,” he said.

“Normally, this time of the year, we would have

access to the ice all the way down to probably 15 miles, 16 (miles). We would see polar bears out there hunting for seals … but they’ve got nowhere to hunt.”

Ice has only recently started forming in the bay near the community, he noted.

He said he can remember travelling from Dorset Island to Baffin Island over solid ice in September decades ago, but that wasn’t possible until January this year.

“It’s a big difference right now,” he said.

Toonoo added that the lack of demand for polar bear hides, and resulting lower value, has made hunting bears less appealing to hunters in general.

The Department of Environment confirmed that hunting tags for the Foxe Basin sub-population are available in Kinngait for the 2021-22 polar bear harvest season.

In a statement, the department noted that wildlife deterrence continues in the Qikiqtani community through a combination of the RCMP, visits from conservation officers based in regional headquarters and co-ordination with the HTA and the hamlet — however, the department noted that it had not received any complaints about polar bears in Kinngait recently.

The law also allows individuals to kill wildlife in defence of life and property. The Department of Environment investigates such incidents. If it is determined that the action was justified, the meat, hide and other animal byproducts are returned to the community.

As the organization is in its 25th year, it’s striving to raise $250,000 to help fund its various programs, now and into the future. It has already passed the $192,000 mark since the campaign kicked off on March 6. Eighty-three donors from across the country have made contributions.

Two of the founders of the society, Emily Angulalik and Kim Crockatt, are back at the forefront of co-ordinating the programming.

“It’s the passion of wanting to preserve your language and to see the outcome of the work that we are doing here,” said Angulalik, the executive director.

She estimates that there are between 300 and 400 fluent Inuinnaqtun speakers left, residing in Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven, Baker Lake, Sanikiluaq and the NWT community of Ulukhaktok.

Among the initiatives that PI/KHS has created to further the Inuit language are podcasts with Elders and a mentorship/apprentice program.

The podcasts, known as Inuinnaujugut and which run from 15 minutes to an hour, have made a return after a pandemic-related hiatus.

Available through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts, they feature Elders talking about their personal and family histories and environmental observations.

“You want to engage yourself in their language of storytelling,” said Angulalik.

The mentorship program involves six participants to date, each spending 12 to 15 hours per week immersed in Inuinnaqtun with an

“You need to be committed,” Angulalik said.

There’s also an approach known as a language nest, which focuses on families and children.

An Immersion Day Camp for families was held over the summer and the society aims to foster language nests permanently, including through the cultural centre, where PI/KHS is based. There, two rooms are designated as Inuinnaqtun-only. It’s become more common to hear Inuinnaqtun in the cultural centre daily than it is English, according to Crockatt, the society’s finance and operating officer.

“Everybody seems to really enjoy it, and it works,” she said. “People have learned that they don’t have to be afraid anymore of making mistakes, or not being as confident as they think they should be.”

Much of the work that the society is doing – 45 projects in total last year alone – is being digitized so that individuals and families far and wide can access it.

The society also aims to help members heal from the effects of intergenerational trauma and “work instead to build intergenerational support systems.” That means having mental health support workers available on occasion in addition to Elders.

Its online language curriculum called Inuinnaujunga, which translates to “I am Inuinnait,” starts with a 10-lesson beginner’s module that is “deeply informed by intergenerational trauma and the consequences of being denied one’s language. Uqahukhiutit will take learners on a very personal journey of reconnection, helping them understand and embrace their identity in relation to their kinship network and the land.”

Angulalik describes herself as an optimist when it comes to how effective the society’s endeavours will be.

“We may not be as fluent as our ancestors were but we can definitely hold a good conversation with your fellow peer or an Elder, then wow, that is amazing,” she said.

With 83 per cent of Nunavummiut over age 12 fully vaccinated and a whopping 92 per cent having received their first dose of protection, Nunavummiut are already doing what they can to protect their neighbours.

Proof of vaccination would be a proactive step in ensuring that public spaces remain as safe as possible for all Nunavummiut, including our youngest and most vulnerable.

Soon Santa, who lives close by, will make his annual visit to those who were naughty or nice.

Weather is cold and winter has been a fast and quick snap of cold cold weather. Temperatures have already reached to -50’s. So we hope you all are dressed up warm to walk to school or work. The Christmas street lights on Omingmak Street have been turned back on since the Christmas holiday is upon us.

Christmas lights around the community look so beautiful and peaceful. This time of year organizations and businesses have their holiday parties of potlucks, suppers, gatherings,

celebrating each other and their co-workers with good food, games and laughter.

This year, due to the pandemic, Christmas activities and gatherings are once again limited. A schedule and calendar of activities during the holiday season has been done up and we hope you all get a copy made up by the Recreation Department from the Municipality of Cambridge Bay offices. Quana Hogaluk, Melissa and Valter for your assistance in getting the Christmas Activities 2021 program ready. It will also be available in Inuinnaqtut for our Elders to follow, quana Hamlet for ensuring that information is translated to Inuinnaqtut, language of the Inuinnait, for our Elders to understand.

We had some special visitors meeting in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut this past few days from all over Nunavut. Our newly elected Premier P.J. Akeeagok, the members of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly and the Board of Directors from Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated and their staff. We hope you all are enjoying your welcome and visit to our friendly hospitality community of Iqaluktuutiak. There have not often been meetings since this pandemic started, so there have been limits on attendance and they were not open to public.

Everyone is abiding by the restrictions from the public health office of Nunavut. Everyone continues to wear their masks and residents have been dligent in receiving their vaccinations. Quana to the public health nurses Nicole and staff for ensuring residents are safe and healthy and receiving the booster shot and vaccines.

Be safe everyone, more restrictions as the pandemic is still around the world, and is close to our homeland. Continue to watch your health, wear masks, keep washing your hands and enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Stay well, eat well, and be safe. Stay warm.

Nunavut’s isolation makes situation for women in territory tough; says Qulliit president

On Dec. 6 the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council partnered up with Pauktuutit and the Nunavut Law Society to organize a community walk to commemorate the 30th National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, also

known as White Ribbon Day. In 1989, 14 women were murdered at the Polytechnique Montreal on Dec. 6, a violent act of misogyny which led to the national day of recognition being designated in 1991.

The walk was attended by around 25 people and it went from the Igluvut Building to the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, where a qulliq lighting ceremony was held with guest speakers from the three organizations.

The Inuksuk Drum Dancers from Inuksuk High School also performed at the museum, giving their support.

A rose ceremony was held, where guests laid down yellow roses to commemorate missing and murdered women, which was followed by a moment of silence.

Nunavut’s geographical separation from the rest of Canada makes the situation for women in the territory facing violence all the more tough, says Qulliit President Sileema Anugoyuak.

“We’re so isolated, if you’re in Toronto and you want to get up and move, you go 30 kilometres one way and you’re in a new city or town. But here you have to spend a lot of money to get out of the community, and it’s so expensive to live up here.

There’s so many factors.”

A testomonial video by Pauktuutit’s Break the Silence campaign was also played at the museum, showing impacts of the violence women also face in Nunavut.

Indigenous women also are disproportionally impacted by violence, according to Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada , Indigenous women make up only four per cent of the Canada’s female population but consist of 16 per cent of all women murdered in Canada between 1980 and 2012.

The amount of resources offered to women facing violence has improved however, says Angoyuak “whether its programming or finding help or solutions,” she said, there are people out there who can help.

Oral history caught in the nick of time

Traditional place names maps are on their way to Arviat homes, thanks to the work of local Elders and the Nunavut Heritage Trust.

The maps are part of a long-running project by the organization to collect traditional place names and create maps for each community or region in Nunavut. The trust has documented more than 10,000 traditional names since beginning this effort 20 years ago.

Many Elders contributed to the Arviat map during the trust’s community engagement sessions, but one sticks out: Donald Uluadluaq.

“We were told we better hurry up and get there because he wasn’t going to be alive much longer,” recalled Lynn Peplinski, traditional place names manager for Nunavut Heritage Trust, while she and her team were compiling information for the Arviat map.

She quickly made plans and got on a plane to meet him in the nursing home in Arviat with his daughter. Uluadluaq was connected to an oxygen tank and needed frequent naps, but over the course of seven days, Peplinski and her team went through every name on the map with him.

“He passed away 10 days after we left,” she said, noting how close the timing was.

The Arviat maps have something previous ones don’t, too: they’re waterproof. Two copies of the map will be sent to every household in Arviat.

Peplinski said there are remarkably few conflicts that arise in place names during her community tours. Most Elders have clear ideas of what’s what, and if they don’t, they suggest the right person to talk to.

“The Elders that we work with are so careful to make sure that what is written down is exact,” said Peplinski.

“What usually happens is they’ll identify names for a certain area, and then they’ll get to a boundary and they’ll say, ‘Beyond this point here, you really should talk to so and so.’ So even if the person might know the names beyond the boundary, they don’t feel like they’re an authority.”

What separates Indigenous naming conventions and European ones, explained Peplinski, is that Indigenous names tend to describe the area – “big mountain” or “good place to hunt seals” – whereas European names tend to refer to travel sponsors, kings or other people.

“It’s a very interesting difference between the European way and the Indigenous way of naming places,” said Peplinski, adding that the Indigenous way makes “the land come alive.”

It is rare to find Indigenous places named after people, but there are a few, such as Mittimatalik, or Pond Inlet, which is named for where the remains of Mittima are.

Otherwise, Inuit would not traditionally name places after people because they didn’t want to give the sense that any single person owned that land.

In Arviat, and commonly in Nunavut, the sad truth is some of the traditional names will never be captured, as they were lost when Elders familiar with those areas passed on.

What’s important for Peplinski now is that this project doesn’t end with waterproof maps, as nice as those may be – she wants the Indigenous place names to be the official names with the Government of Canada.

“It’s really important that these projects follow through to the end, the end being that the names become official,” she said. “As long as the names are not official, they’re vulnerable to being lost.”

‘He has created the love of dance’; Kugluktuk remembers Colin Adjun

Renowned fiddler, jigger and square dancer dies at 77 after inspiring other musicians

Northern fiddling legend Colin Adjun died on Dec. 3, but his legacy will live on in his home community of Kugluktuk in many ways.

Kugluktuk Hamlet Council has decided to name the local community hall after Adjun and also chose to award him the honorary key to the community shortly before his death, said Simon Kuliktana, the community’s mayor and a fellow musician who performed with Adjun on numerous occasions.

In the coming months, a day will be set aside to pay tribute to the beloved entertainer, he added.

“It is a big loss to our community,” Kuliktana said.

Adjun, 77, was known as the Fiddler of the Arctic. With multiple albums recorded, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contributions as a musical artist.

“One thing about Kugluktuk, they love to dance, they love to jig, they love to square dance, and you can see that right from the toddlers, they’re trying to jig,” said Kuliktana. “I was telling Mavis (Adjun’s wife) that Colin had created a culture… I think that’s going to be his legacy

in Kugluktuk. He has created the love of dance, the love of square dance and the love of jigging.

He has left that impact within our community, but not only in our community, in the Kitikmeot and right across the North.”

Yellowknife fiddler Lee Mandeville witnessed Adjun’s love of dance in addition to absorbing his mentorship as a violin player.

“His stamina was amazing. He’d be on stage entertaining everybody and then when somebody else picks up the fiddle, he’d go on the dance floor and grab a partner. He just loved it,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve met anybody that loves square dancing as much as him.”

Mandeville was just nine years old when he first saw Adjun in action close to 35 years ago.

“I was intrigued by him because the way he interacted with the audience was pretty unique … people were dancing pretty lively. It just put a bug in me, I wanted to do something like that,” he remembered. “He was a charismatic character.”

And Mandeville did just that four years later, pursuing his love affair with the musical instrument at age 13, with a helping hand from Adjun.

“He encouraged me all the way through. He was a really positive guy, generous. He shared his music. He taught me a few songs. I really liked Faded Love and Red River Jig,” he said.

Iqaluit’s only thrift store reopens its doors Piviniit greeted by long lineups and a full parking lot

On Dec. 4, after a brief hiatus, Iqaluit’s Piviniit Thrift Store reopened to long lineups and lots of customers, moving to it’s new location at building 778 along Fred Coman Drive.

“We were expecting to be busy on the day of our re-opening but were still blown away by the amount of shoppers,” said Anika Bychok, Piviniit Society’s volunteer co-ordinator, so much so they had two people working at the cash register that day.

As a way of saying thank you to Iqalummiut, Piviniit gave away as many $5 gift cards as they could during its reopening. There was also a contest held, with one customer winning $50

worth of Piviniit gift cards.

“We also had a lot of people stop by on Saturday to drop off donations that they had likely been holding on to since we closed in Building 655 at the end of September,” said Bychok.

She also noted many customers on Dec. 4 were impressed by the increased size of the new space, with more room for people to move around in and to store donations.

Piviniit is grateful to receive help from its new landlord True North Properties Group, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association for providing funding to help renovate 778 and the Uqsuq Corporation for subsidizing fuel costs in the new location.

The organization took to social media to thank everyone who attended, “we are definitely feeling the love today,” read a statement by Piviniit on Facebook on the reopening.

Music Festival.

“I was amazed at how many different walks of life knew him. It just showed me that (through) his musical talent, he had a lot of connections,” he recalled, adding that his parents also listened to Adjun’s music, as do his children and grandchildren. “He would never refuse if he was asked to play, that was Colin.”

Multiple federal parties allow in members as young as 14, according to litigants

A group of 13 students from all across Canada have filed a court challenge to lower the federal voting age to be more in line with the major federal parties. The challenge is arguing the age of 18 set out in the Canada Elections Act is unconstitutional.

One of these students is 15-year-old Katie Yu of Iqaluit, who is not only the only student from Nunavut, but from all three territories. She argues its important not only for youth in general to have a voice, but also Nunavummiut,

given the younger population of the territory.

Yu got involved in the movement through UNICEF Canada’s Youth Advocacy program, which she described as sessions that taught youth about advocacy in government.

“Towards the end of the year we developed recommendations about issues we cared about and took a more active approach to advocacy,” said Yu. That active approach is culminating in filing a court challenge, with the students citing other countries such as Germany, Brazil, Austria, Argentina and a few others as examples of giving youth more of a voice.

“We want to not just give youth a voice in elections but to uplift the youth voice in society in general, because its such a fundamental democratic right,” Yu explained.

The Liberal, Conservative and Green parties each allow members as young as 14 to join their respective parties, while the NDP does not have a set minimum age at the federal level, according to a release from the group.

Yu is particularly passionate about climate change and mental health, issues which particularly impact youth in Nunavut.

“If youth had the right to vote then politicians would be more responsive

to youth concerns because they have to serve their constituencies and we’re currently not part of the constituency that can vote,” she said.

She argues it would make politicians more reactive to these issues if youth were part of the electorate.

“I think elections would turn out differently and youth would be more encouraged to get involved and have a say,” said Yu. While Yu says she doesn’t expect all youth to vote if given the chance, it’s still “important to give them the opportunity to do so.”

The movement to lower the voting age has already reached the munici-

pal level in some parts of Canada. In June, the City of Vancouver officially endorsed lowering the voting age to 16 in municipalities across B.C. The P.E.I. provincial government also struck down an attempt to do so in April.

“We want our rights as citizens to be protected as youth,” said Yu. “Nunavut specifically, we are facing these issues in unique ways – Nunavummiut are often less represented in national conversations and discussions, I think its really important to uplift the youth voice in Nunavut and the voices of Nunavummiut in general.”

-Testing protocols for the southern workers have been in place since the beginning of the pandemic. Laboratories have been established in Val-d’Or, Que., and Mirabel Que., as well as in the Meliadine and Meadowbank sites in the Kivalliq region. Southern employees and contractors are tested before they board flights.

Workers are retested again after five days at the mine sites to address risks related to the incubation period. Nunavummiut workers are tested upon arrival to site, again after five days at site and once more the day before returning home.

-As of Nov. 15, all employees, contractors and visitors are required to have two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

-Face masks are mandatory at all times in the workplace and common areas.

-A thermal scanner has been installed to check the temperature and monitor for fever of every employee entering the cafeteria, where eating

schedules are staggered to reduce crowds.

-Sanitizing products are available in common areas.

-Enhanced room cleaning practices are in place and hospital-grade cleaning products have been adopted. In addition, more employees were put on the cleaning team to sanitize common areas.

-Posters promoting hygiene are on display around the site to keep people informed.

-Heavy equipment and light vehicles must be thoroughly cleaned by the driver at the start and end of each shift.

Baffinland Iron Mines -All workers at the Mary River mine had to be fully vaccinated no later than Sept. 1.

-Pre-travel Covid-19 screening requirements and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing labs at travel hubs to facilitate pre-flight testing requirements.

-A fully prepared isolation wing on site, should the need arise.

-Mandatory mask wearing in line with or above and beyond public health and Transport Canada requirements.

-Enhanced cleaning and hygiene protocols for all high-touch surfaces.

Nunavummiut workers spent time retraining and learning Covid protocols upon their return to mine sites

Hundreds of Nunavummiut miners returned to work during the summer and fall and it wasn’t just a simple process of picking up where they left off.

A retraining phase was put in place to ensure that mine staff were once again familiar with their job duties and responsibilities. The employees also had to be made aware of changes to the workplace since they were sent home in March 2020 to minimize the risk of Covid-19 transmission to Nunavut communities.

Arviat’s Ashton Kadjuk, an underground shift supervisor at Agnico Eagle’s Meliadine mine 25 kilometres north of Rankin Inlet, was one of those miners. He retrained alongside other supervisors who remained on the job.

“It was a different experience to go back to work but our department has done a very good job to get me back into work,” he said. “They put all the steps forward to make sure I’m ready for work.”

There are numerous workplaces underground and it took some time to get to know the lay of the land since he was last there 16 months earlier, Kadjuk said, as an example.

There were also many new safety protocols in place to contain Covid-19 in the workplace.

Signing in for a shift used to be done via pen and paper, but to eliminate the risk of spreading germs, that changed to a digital process, he noted.

Visits to the cafeteria now begin by making use of a hand-washing station. The cafeteria seating was changed to incorporate social distancing and Plexiglass panels were installed to thwart the passing of microbes.

“I think that’s a very big improvement,” Kadjuk said of the measures.

As a supervisor, he said it’s become part of his job to remind his co-workers to follow Covid safety protocols.

Community cares The lengthy sabbatical was difficult in some respects, Kadjuk acknowledged.

“My community did a very good job, like

they always do, coming together and helping each other out,” he said. “It helped everyone get through that.”

He added that he concentrated on his music and artwork at times to fill his days while away from the job.

Agnico Eagle paid employees 75 per cent of their base salaries throughout the period.

“I was very grateful for that,” Kadjuk said of the steady income.

David Akeeagok, then-minister of Mines as well as Economic Development, made a statement in September to draw attention to the importance of the mining industry and its impact on Nunavut’s economy.

“Mines are the largest private-sector employer of Nunavummiut, and mine employees have been disproportionately impacted by the border restrictions and isolation requirements. Facilitating the return of Nunavummiut mine employees to work was a complex undertaking and required the cooperation of many parties,” Akeeagok said at the time.

Hope Bay challenges The situation at the Doris North gold mine on the Kitikmeot Hope Bay property, acquired by Agnico Eagle when it took over TMAC Resources in February, proved more challenging recently.

A Covid-19 outbreak occurred at that site in late September, forcing the mining company to scale back production in early October and temporarily reduce the number of staff to no more than 40.

A ramp-up began in November, after a thorough cleaning of the facilities at Hope Bay, according to Alex Buchan, Agnico Eagle’s director of Western Nunavut Affairs. The number of personnel at Doris North has climbed back to 190 — all required to have received their vaccinations — but there are still no Nunavummiut among their ranks.

“We continue to monitor and assess the pandemic situation — and, in particular, the Omicron variant — and we look forward to potential rehire of workers early in the new year,” Buchan stated.

“We will be focusing on underground mining at Hope Bay for the remainder of the year in order to build up our ore stockpiles. This allows us to effectively feed our processing plant.”

Christmas events in the capital

Iqaluit Iqaluit’s Santa Claus Parade will feature a new twist this year, the City of Iqaluit announced on Thursday.

The parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18. Those who want to register floats can do so online.

Santa Claus will be entertaining visitors and taking pictures at the Elders Qammaq following the parade.

A new addition will include a Winter Wonderland event at Iqaluit Square near NorthMart and the Elders Qammaq. Festivities will be taking place at the square with books on hand and candy and warm beverages being served on Friday, Dec. 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Flooding forces health centre to close

Taloyoak The Taloyoak Health Centre has been forced to close due to flooding, according to the Department of Health.

Damage to the building is being assessed to determine when it can reopen.

Emergency care, pre- and post-natal care and infant care are the only services that will be offered until further notice, the department stated on Dec. 6.

Residents of Taloyoak are asked to call the health centre at 867-561-5111 before arriving. The facility will be accessible through the side door by the garage.

The eye team will operate out of the old health centre. However, the dental team has cancelled its appointments.

Vaccinations are postponed.

Covid-19 testing can be arranged by calling the hotline at 1-888-975-8601 to determine if a test is needed.

Ikurraq Food Bank has new champion

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet As a young mother in Calgary, Sally Cormier-Ittinuar needed her local food bank.

“I was in dire straits,” remembers the Rankin Inlet woman, who moved to the Kivalliq from New Brunswick almost two decades ago. “It was a life-saver for me. I was so grateful that the food bank was there for myself and my son, so I know what a vital service it is.”

She’s now taken over the role as “champion” of the Ikurraq Food Bank Society, a role Mary Fredlund filled for 25 years. The society had warned that the charitable organization could close if a new leader couldn’t be found.

Those shoes will be hard to fill, “but we sure will try,” said Cormier-Ittinuar.

The food bank serves 40 to 60 people per week. Everyone from Elders to families use the services.

Currently, she’s spending about three evenings a week at the food bank, which is entirely run by volunteers. The staff’s philosophy is to offer a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental place where anyone can come for help.

Cormier-Ittinuar has some big dreams for the space in the future, but for now is learning the ropes and looks forward to incorporating some new ideas down the road.

“I think it’s running smoothly right now,” she said. “I’m just going to keep it at the same pace and go from there.”

RCMP make arrest following cab robbery

Iqaluit The RCMP acted on information received on Dec. 3 about the armed robbery of an Iqaluit taxi cab earlier that day and made an arrest.

Jimmy Nukiguak, 22, faces a charge of robbery. His bail hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 9.

The suspect allegedly pulled a knife after entering the cab and made off with cash close to midnight, the Mounties reported on Dec. 3.

Military drawing water from river, City ponders plastic problem

Iqaluit The City of Iqaluit is searching for a solution to another problem the ongoing water crisis has created: the piles of empty plastic water bottles from the massive volumes of bottled water flown in to meet local water needs.

On Dec. 6, the city announced it will be switching to purified river water from the Sylvia Grinnell River, provided to the city by the Canadian Armed Forces in Operation LENTUS. Therefore, water pick-up depots in the territorial capital will no longer be providing bottled water. Iqalummiut are being asked to bring their own containers to refill.

On the same day, the municipality requested that residents crush and store empty water bottles in recycling bags with the lids put back on. The city is asking Iqalummiut, if possible, to keep these recyclables in their possession until the municipal government can develop a solution to the influx of bottled water.

The city is currently working with partners to develop a recycling management plan. For the integrity of the tentative plan, the city is asking people not to mix other recyclables with the discarded plastic water bottles in recycling bags.

Pedestrian hospitalized after hit and run

Iqaluit A pedestrian in Iqaluit was hospitalized with injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Dec. 7, and the driver, allegedly intoxicated, is accused of driving away after the incident.

The RCMP say officers responded at 159 Nipisa Road, near the Quickstop, at 5:35 p.m. The victim was taken to Qikiqtani General Hospital by ambulance. She remains in stable condition with “significant” injuries, according to police.

The Mounties later located the male suspect at his residence, with assistance from information provided by members of the public. The man was arrested and faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failure to stop and remain after an accident causing bodily harm and driving while prohibited.

The accused, whom the RCMP did not identify, is currently being held in jail until he attends his bail hearing.

Vaccine passport required

Arviat Everyone 12 and older will have to show proof of vaccination to enter municipal buildings in Arviat as of Monday, Dec. 6.

The hamlet announced the decision on Facebook and disabled comments on the post.

“In order to access hamlet buildings, you will be required to present a proof of vaccination card or QR code before entering,” wrote the hamlet on Facebook. “You may also be required to present a photo ID if needed.”

Unvaccinated people can still use hamlet services if they call to make an appointment beforehand.

The vaccine passport will not apply to those younger than 12 for the time being.

The hamlet will accept requests for accommodation for anyone unable to get fully vaccinated. Requests must be made in writing to the senior administrative officer at sao@arviat.ca.

Arviat is following Rankin Inlet, which enforced its municipal vaccine passport Nov. 30.

Pond Inlet’s Mason Parks wins National Child Day logo design contest Iqaluit’s Patrick Witzaney-Chown and Meriva Manebou runners-up

Ten-year-old Mason Parks from Pond Inlet is the winner of the Representative for Children and Youth Nunavut’s (RCYNU) logo design contest held for National Child Day, Nov. 20.

“I feel proud of myself,” said Mason. “It is Inuit hunting,” he added, describing the winning drawing.

Hunting and being out on the land is an activity which Mason enjoys.

“Every opportunity he wants to go out hunting and camping,” said Sherry Parks, Mason’s mom.

In this contest the RCYNU asked kids from across the territory to create a logo of what children’s rights means to them. The winning logo will be featured on the RCYNU’s new T-shirt, which is expected to be ready in a few weeks.

Over 30 young Nunavummiut took part in the contest, from the Kitikmeot, Kivalliq to Qikiqtaaluk.

Representatives from RCYNU picked three winners from the various contestants, the three winners will each receive fishing or camping gear worth $500, in addition to RCYNU swag, which will include the new T-shirt.

For Sherry it came as a surprise to be chosen as a winner.

“We’re not very lucky with draws and things like that so it was actually really surprising to get a phone call to say that my son has won the logo contest.”

The two runners-up below Parks were Iqaluit’s Patrick WitzaneyChown, 10, in second place and Meriva Manebou, 14, also from Iqaluit.

The United Nation’s adopted the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on Nov. 20, 1989. As a signatory to the Convention, Canada has a commitment to ensure all children are treated with dignity, respect and have every opportunity to have a voice, be protected from harm and to ensure their basic needs are met. This

commitment extends to all children across Canada.

“Our children are our future, specifically for the logo the picture that Mason draw, especially in Nunavut, it’s a child’s right to know and understand the hunting culture,” said Sherry.

According to the Government of Canada, National Child Day provides an excellent opportunity for educators, parents and caregivers to educate children about their rights.

Seniors duke it out in the Soo

Another adventure for Nunavut’s curlers saw them hit Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., for the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, which wrapped up on Dec. 12.

ᕌᐱᓐ ᒪᑲᐃ ᖁᙱᐊᖅᐳᖅ ᐊᑕᐅᓯᐅᔪᒥ ᐃᒋᑕᒥᓂᒃ ᑐᕌᖅᑎᓪᓗᒍ ᓯᑯᒥ.

Both rinks hailed from the Iqaluit Curling Club with the women’s rink consisting of skip Geneva Chislett and her rink of Diane North, Robyn Mackey and Denise Hutchings while Peter Mackey skipped the three-man outfit of himself, Jeff Nadeau and Greg Howard.

Neither team was able to hit the win column during the round-robin phase and both ended up in the seeding pool to determine final placings and which pool each team would play in for the 2022 event.

If you’re wondering why one of the curling games between the United States and Japan at the Mixed Doubles Olympic Qualifier in the Netherlands wasn’t shown in the Olympic livestream, you aren’t alone.

This happened on Dec. 4 with people shown one of those blue screens popping up telling viewers to watch the game in the World Curling Federation’s live feed. The official line was that it was due to a sponsorship conflict, but others who took a close look figured out what was perhaps the real reason. One of the event’s sponsors was a company called EasyToys. For those of you who aren’t aware what EasyToys deals in, I’ll give you a hint: bedroom motivation.

The tournament’s organizer, Dagmar van Stiphout, told the Associated Press that he wasn’t the right man to have an opinion on what’s normal in other countries and perhaps those who made the decision to not broadcast the game should be asked. And he’s right. Make them explain it away, though I can understand the decision in a sport where the terms “hurry” and “hard” are used rather liberally.
