Classroom on the land School trips can see the student often become the teacher

A group of senior high students from Grades 10 to 12 took part in the first of a number of springtime trips out on the land at Tuugaalik High School in Naujaat on April 26.

The group's main guide was Laimmiki Malliki from the high school and there were also five senior high teachers on the journey.

Vice-principal Julia MacPherson said students from a few classes at the senior high level will be going out on the land again in the coming week.

She said 30 of the more than 50 students who returned their permission slips to go showed up on the morning of April 26.

"Laimmiki (Malliki) arranged the trip and had everything set up, and the group took off a little after 10 a.m. that Friday morning," said MacPherson.

"They did a little hunting and fishing and, even though many students were jigging, Grade 10 student Shane Mapsalak caught the only fish of the day, so he did a victory dance and cheer that was actually quite exciting.

"Grade 10 student Angelina Siusang-

nark, 16, caught her first caribou on the trip and she was very excited and proud.

"They butchered the caribou to cut up the meat and she took it all home to her family."

MacPherson said the Naujaat students love the land trips, which they see as a highlight of the school year.

She said the trips are an important part of the school's curriculum, in order to foster Inuit culture and language.

"Gregg Durrant and Nikki James, who are from Jamaica, went on the trip. It was Nikki's first land trip and they had a lot of fun and quite a few new experiences.

"The ice was clear of snow, so it had that deep blue colour with, kind of, ripples in it – and it was the first time Nikki had ever stood on ice like that, when it feels like it's water.

"The students were excited and trying to tell her that everything was OK, and she could take their hands if she wanted to walk on the ice, as they were all taking pictures in good fun."

MacPherson said the land trips are very important to the students and it's nice for everyone to have a chance to get out on the land to hunt and fish.

She said some of the students even went over to sit in the sand that had been

blown into a little hill out on the land.

"They just went over, sat in the sand, chatted, and just enjoyed being outside.

"It's also a really good opportunity for the students to interact with the teachers in a different setting, where the student becomes the teacher, especially for some of our teachers who are visiting here from the south or somewhere like Jamaica."

MacPherson said school administrators try to get every student on at least two trips per year, one in the early fall and one in the spring.

She said they hope to have two or three more trips before the end of May, with the final day of school being June 6.

"The Grade 8 and Grade 9 students will, hopefully, be going together, and we're hoping to send two more senior high classes.

"It will be a great opportunity for one class that's working on a project with a member of the health centre, and the other trip will be for any student who didn't get to go on the first one.

"The process of going out, learning and acquiring some of the land skills – setting up and taking down camp, packing a qamutiik, fishing, hunting and reading the land – that's all incorporated into our curriculum in each grade."

Rankin Inlet The Rankin Inlet Fishing Derby Committee has released the date – May 17 to May 20 – and cash prizes up for grabs at the annual Rankin Inlet Trout Fishing Derby, This year's trout derby has a $50 entry fee per household, including non-Rankin residents.

Registration opens this coming Friday, May 10, with Susan Hicks, Amy Kaludjak, Dayna Ussak, Loren Kaludjuak and Qovik Netser.

Measuring will take place on Tuesday, May 21, from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Rankin Inlet community hall.

Prizes and door prizes will be handed out at 6 p.m. at the community hall.

The draw prizes sponsored by the derby committee include two registered household draws of $250 cash prizes, an elder's draw of two $250 cash prizes for 60-years-ofage-or-older who registered, and a kids' draw of two new bicycles for 12-years-or-younger who registered.

Rankin fishing derbies have a 50-mile limit.

Awards announced Arviat Arviat's Alanna Copland is Nunavut's winner of the Canada Post 2018 Aboriginal Education Incentive Awards.

The awards recognize the commitment made by Canadians of Indigenous heritage who have chosen to return to school after an absence from formal education.

Since 2004, the awards have recognized more than 300 people from across the country.

Effective May 2019, the awards program has been renamed the Canada Post Awards for Indigenous Students.

The awards will be open to all Indigenous Canadian students who have resumed studies and completed at least one full year of study after being away from school for at least 12 months.

Applicants are required to submit an essay outlining the obstacles and challenges they have overcome in pursuit of further education. Each year, up to 25 winners across the country are awarded a $1,000 prize.

Athletes' banquet Baker Lake The 16th annual Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association banquet was held this past Saturday, May 4, at the Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School gymnasium.

Hamlet days Baker Lake: The hamlet of Baker Lake is currently hosting Hamlet Day Games, from May 6 to May 11.

Today's lineup includes disabled games at 1 p.m,, three games for ages 13-25 at 4:30 p.m., and, at 6 p.m. – all for adults – outdoor games, sinuqtaq and a piggyback run race.

Tomorrow, May 9, will see an elders' lunch and games at noon, while 6 p.m. will see four adult games – egg race with teaspoon, bunny hop race, back-to-back race and a wheelbarrow race – and 8 p.m. will feature an adult jigging contest followed by a square dance.

Strong showing at skills competition Arviat students bring home medals from 2019 Skills Canada Nunavut in Iqaluit

Seven students from John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) in Arviat combined to put in an impressive showing at the 2019 Skills Canada Nunavut competition at Iqaluit from April 26 to 28.

Annie Kritaqliluk captured gold in the Job Demonstration category and Natalie Baker earned gold in Aesthetics, while Meagan Tassiuk (Public Speaking), Mallory Okatsiak (Hairstyling), and the team of Chasity St. John and Katy Suluk (Video Production) earned silver medals in their respective categories, and Abbey-Rose Katsuak took home bronze in Traditional Sewing.

Gord Billard of JAHS, who coached the video production team and chaperoned the Arviat students in Iqaluit, said the competition was one of the smoothest he's seen in his many years at the event.

He said he was told by organizers that this year's competition had the largest number of participants ever in Iqaluit.

"I wasn't given actual numbers; just told it was the largest number of participants they've had in its 14-year history, so that made it a bit more special in my eyes," said Billard.

"I've been to this competi-

tion about 10 times, so I've seen the numbers go up and down during those years.

Billard said the competition ran like a well-oiled machine.

He said the new format, which split the actual competition between Saturday and Sunday instead of being held all on one day, proved itself to be of benefit to the competitors.

"That was a big change this year and, because the competition started on Saturday afternoon and finished on Sunday morning, the competitors had overnight to sit back, reflect on what they did that day, and give some thought as to how they were going to wrap things up," Billard said.

"The girls on our Video Production team (St. John and Suluk) used that time to think about the plan they had for their video and, when they went back on Sunday, they knew exactly the kind of editing job they were going to do."

Annie Kritaqliluk said she totally enjoyed Skills.

She said she started the competition thinking she'd never win anything, and then walked away with a gold medal.

"I'm very proud of myself for winning that gold medal," said Kritaqliluk.

"I'm very happy I got close to every Arviatmiut and saw a

lot of familiar faces in Iqaluit, and I love that I made new friends there.

"My very first time going to Skills Canada Nunavut and it turned out awesome, so it makes me think about trying again next year."

Final trip to Skills Okatsiak said she really enjoyed her third and final trip to the Skills competition.

She said she will miss having the chance to participate in the event every year.

"I was surprised that even though my scissors were gone, I still managed to finish in second place," said Okatsiak.

"And I was thrilled to see my family and friends again in Iqaluit.

"I'm so happy I got to participate in Skills for the past three years."

Striking gold at Skills Canada Nunavut meant a lot to Baker.

She said after winning gold, her second favourite part of the experience was making new friends.

"I had a chance to show my skill to people in Aesthetics and I really enjoyed that part of it," said Baker.

"I also enjoyed getting to see other people competing in different categories.

"It was great to see the different creations they had been practicing on for quite a

Billard said while none of the Arviat students qualified for the national competition, their efforts were justly acknowledged on their return to JAHS. He said the job done by this year's team compares favourably with how Arviat

students have done in years past.

"What I love about Skills is that so many students who take part discover they're good at something and, when someone from a big organization like Skills Canada Nunavut validates that with a medal, it even means some-

thing more," he said.

"It makes them realize there are things they can do well and earning a medal to validate that means an awful lot to many of them."

Oh, I shudder to think if looks could kill, but it is gratifying the number of them who glare at me as they join my line.

And, I would also offer a word of caution if you find yourself around the actual machines in those self -checkout lanes.

If they're the ones in a single row with the plugs visible behind them – or those charged ones where six or seven share the same terminal and those connectors all flow along the bottom – you can easily get all-tangled up in those darn things if you're not paying attention.

I've heard it's not pleasant, especially if you get all panic-stricken, wrap yourself up even worse around them and start pulling away trying to get free.

I can only imagine that must be almost as traumatizing as those people who walk the line inside the airport – you know, in front of the three check-in counters of their airline where there used to be seven – and come-up to say you "must" use the automatic check-in machine.

Well, I can guess that's pretty traumatizing for someone involved!

The trip was the first of many that will take place at Tuugaalik this spring.

Banner season for Rankin bantams Claim Toonik Tyme title for perfect 4-0 record in season tournaments

The Rankin Rock bantam team romped through the Toonik Tyme minor hockey tournament with an undefeated record to cap a perfect season in Iqaluit on April 21.

The Rock bantams won all four tournaments they entered this season, taking the championship banner in the Rankin Rock bantam tournament in Rankin, Nunavut's bantam territorial championship, Toonik Tyme and the Winnipeg Jets Challenge in Manitoba.

Head coach David Clark said although this was the

Rock's second straight bantam title in Iqaluit, most of the players on this year's team were different than the squad that captured it the previous year.

He said only three players were on both championship teams.

"Iqaluit had a good midget team this year, but their bantams were not up to our level," said Clark.

"It's one of those things where the cycles often go up and down in small towns with minor hockey programs.

"It's quite difficult, if not impossible, to have a competitive team in every age group

year after year.

"We never really had any close games in Iqaluit, but the boys had a good time and it was a good way to end a successful season."

In fact, when the final siren sounded to end the Rankin bantams' season, the team couldn't have asked for a more successful campaign, which was as close to perfection as you can get.

Clark said there were some Rankin bantams who played on the Junior Kivalliq Canucks regional team that lost the final game of the (Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre) MICEC

Annual Indigenous Minor Hockey Tournament in Winnipeg.

He said you learn a lot as a player when you win, but you also learn a lot, if not more, when you lose.

"I preached discipline and teamwork to these guys all year. The coaching staff and players put so much work into it and, for everything to come together the way it did, it was a nice feeling.

"We had six or eight players on the regional team, and that was their one loss this year and I know it stung.

"It's still with them today because they talk about it

more than the four tournaments they won."

Clark said the young players this year put in the hard work that's necessary to have such a successful season.

He said they showed up ready to work hard and learn at every single practice throughout the season.

"We set the tone at the beginning of the year and the kids bought into it right from the start.

"At the end of the day, they're a great group of kids to coach and they always put their work ethic first.

"That's, really, all you can ask for as a coach.
