Students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) received some early holiday cheer when they received a gift from the Northern Canada Mini Projects in Chesterfield Inlet on Dec. 13.

Northern Canada Mini Projects is a growing public group with a busy page on Facebook.

VSS teacher Ana Leishman said every single student at the school revived a Christmas envelope from Mini Projects.

She said the annual process begins in early October when she sends Northern Canada Mini Projects a list of the number of male-and-female

students in each grade at VSS. She said mini projects aren't given the names of the students, just their grade and gender.

"Once they have our student breakdown, Northern Canada Mini Projects will put that on their group page and the students will be 'adopted' by people from the south," said Leishman.

"Someone, for example, might take five Grade 4 girls and five Grade 6 girls, or something along those lines, and they pack an envelope and send it to Northern Canada Mini Projects.

"They're regular-sized 8.5 x 11 envelopes the people who participate in the project might fill with things like, maybe, a colouring book

and crayons for the younger kids, maybe a little Christmas tree, a packet of hot chocolate, a pair of socks or mittens and something just for fun.

"They're small, but the kids love it and it's a pretty cool experience for them to open their own little gifts with their friends at school, play with them for a little bit and then take them home to show their moms and dads what they got at school."

Leishman said Northern Canada Mini Projects has been sending the holiday envelopes to the Chester students for the past four years.

She said the envelopes are a small gift that represent a really nice gesture from folks in the south, and the VSS students really look forward

to receiving the envelopes every year now.

"The youngest of our students have no idea what's going on but many of our older students always ask if they're getting Christmas envelopes again this year.

"It's not something that they've come to expect, but they really do get a little excited about it.

"And, you know, it really does send a message to our kids that there are people across our country who think about them up here in the North and really do care about them.

"That's a pretty cool message for the kids to receive at any time, but especially around Christmas."

January Õ∏¥Ö‰ Students record songs Rankin Inlet Grade 7 and 8 students took part in the Four Directions Project led by Darkspark – a not-for-profit arts organization that uses songwriting and recording to engage youth and promote crosscultural understanding – at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet in December.

The program helps participating youth discover how colonial prejudices and stereotyped prejudices were created, are maintained and may be broken.

Hamlet takes control Arviat Arviat's hamlet council announced the creation of the Nalauttaq Fund to replace the Bingo lottery system that was in place.

Mayor Bob Leonard said the fund was created so that hamlet council can support grant funding to support various communitybased volunteer groups.

He said hamlet council will, through an application process, award grant funding four times per year to successful applicants.

Apology given Arviat The long-awaited apology to the Ahiarmiut for their forced relocations by the federal government from 1949 to 1959 finally happened in Arviat on Jan. 22 when federal Minister of CrownIndigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada Carolyn Bennett publicly apologized to the Ahiarmiut on behalf of the Government of Canada.

February ᕖᕗᐊᕆ Standing against fire Baker Lake The strong sense of community spirit in Baker Lake was shown in the efforts of community members banding together to help negate the effects of a blaze that ripped through a municipal garage during the early-morning hours of Jan. 29.

The blaze destroyed the hamlet's fleet of six sewage trucks, a garbage truck, two front-end loaders and a D6 CAT bulldozer.

Two local firefighters were taken to the health centre to be examined after fighting the blaze, but no injuries were reported.

Homicide Arviat One man was in custody and one man was dead following the first homicide in Arviat in more than a decade on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Manasie Thompson, 29, died, while Albert Napayok, 30, was charged with murder in connection to Thompson's death.

Big recognition Chesterfield Inlet/Rankin Inlet Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) teacher Glen Brocklebank was named to the prestigious position of laureate trustee within the Arctic Inspiration Prize in March, while Canada 150 Medal winner Rosemary Sandy of Rankin Inlet was honoured as the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council's Wise Woman Award winner for 2019.

Sandy was honoured with the award for her efforts in keeping traditional knowledge of sewing and cooking alive.

March ∞îπ Financial boost Kivalliq A feasibility study on plans to extend renewable power from northern Manitoba into Nunavut received a major boost with the announcement that the federal government was kicking-in with a $1.6-million grant to the Kivalliq Inuit Association on Feb. 25.

The announcement was made by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Northern Affairs and Internal Trade Yvonne Jones.

Legend passes Rankin Inlet Nunavut mourned the loss of a musical icon with the passing of Charlie Panigoniak in Rankin Inlet on March 6. The much-loved entertainer and singer-songwriter had been battling Parkinson's disease for a number of years prior to his death.

Re-enacting trek Naujaat The Arctic Return Expedition began hiking across the tundra in its attempt to re-enact the historic 650-km trek from Naujaat to the coast adjacent to King William Island by Orcadian explorer John Rae in 1854, despite losing one of its members.

Filmmaker and photographer Garry Tutte suffered an ankle injury shortly after leaving Naujaat in April and had to withdraw from the expedition, leaving members David Reid, Frank Wolf and Richard Smith to try and complete the re-enactment.

Lady retired Rankin Inlet The Grand Old Lady on the hill closed its doors for the final time when the hamlet announced the arena's final day of operation would be Friday, April 12, in Rankin Inlet.

May ØÄ Medal haul Arviat Seven students from John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat combined to put-in an impressive showing at the 2019 Skills Canada Nunavut competition in Iqaluit.

Annie Kritaqliluk captured gold in the Job Demonstration category and Natalie Baker earned gold in Aesthetics, while Meagan Tassiuk (Public Speaking), Mallory Okatsiak (Hairstyling), and the team of Chasity St. John and Katy Suluk (Video Production) earned silver medals in their respective categories, and AbbeyRose Katsuak took home bronze in Traditional Sewing.

New building Baker Lake The minister responsible for Qulliq Energy Corp. (QEC), Jeannie Ehaloak, has granted permission for the QEC to proceed with the construction of a new head office in Baker Lake.

Construction of the new head office is expected to be completed by the fall of 2021 at an estimated cost of $13 million.

The project is also expected to resolve office shortage issues when the lease to QEC's largest office space ends.

Red hot Rock Rankin Inlet The Rankin Rock bantam team romped through the Toonyk Time minor hockey tournament with an undefeated record to cap a perfect season in Iqaluit. The Rock bantams won all four tournaments they entered this season, taking the championship banner in the Rankin Rock bantam tournament in Rankin, Nunavut's bantam territorial championship, Toonyk Tyme and the Winnipeg Jets Challenge in Manitoba.

June ̸ Female fishing champs Arviat/Rankin Inlet The top five winners in Rankin Inlet's cod derby were women, with Kayla Katrokra capturing the top prize of $10,000 with her catch measuring 23 7/8". Meanwhile, Natasha Komakjuak took home $10,000 for coming first in the Arviat cod derby with her catch measuring 69.5 cm.

Water woes Whale Cove It could be at least another two years until the community of Whale Cove can finally say goodbye to boil water advisories for good.

The news that Whale Cove could be waiting until 2021 for its aging treatment plant to be replaced came to light during a sitting of the legislative assembly when Arviat North-Whale Cove MLA John Main asked Minister of Community and Government Services Lorne Kusugak for an update on the situation.

Big donations Rankin Inlet Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) marked the opening of its second mine (Meliadine) in Nunavut on June 19 and 20 by donating $1 million to two community groups in Rankin Inlet.

On June 19, AEM board chairman Jim Nasso presented a cheque for $250,000 to the Rankin Inlet Fire Department and another $750,000 to the Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council.

Bad connection Rankin Inlet Northwestel announced plans to reimburse Rankin Inlet customers who had been experiencing extended service outages for

months in the community.

Customers complained about periodic outages in cellular and internet connectivity, which lasted anywhere between a few minutes to 12 hours at a time, on an almost daily basis for almost three straight months.

July ÀƒÄ Successful program Baker Lake A program teaching youth how to prepare meat and sew sealskin mitts met with early success, while helping to improve and nurture the cultural and traditional skills of its participants in Baker Lake.

The program is funded through the Baker Lake Health and Wellness Committee, instructed by elder Patsy Kaayak and focused on youth 12 to 17 years of age.

Book launch Baker Lake The culmination of two decades of pride, determination, wonder, discovery, talent, respect, and effort took place in Baker Lake when pencil artist Gerald Kuehl held the Kivalliq's premier book launch for Portraits of the Far North in the community on July 8.

Portraits of the Far North was released in June and features 106 drawings and written profiles of Kivalliq elders.

Of those 106 Kivalliq elders, 39 are from Baker Lake and their families all received a free copy of Keuhl's book.

Helping hands Baker Lake The Abluqta Society distributed food to 94 hungry people in Baker Lake, moving the society closer to its goal of opening a regular food bank.

The society is a non-profit social enterprise that strives to provide work experience opportunities for Inuit with barriers to employment.

It recently celebrated the first anniversary of its Thrift Shop, which sells recycled clothing, toys, and household goods at reasonable prices.

Tragic times Chesterfield Inlet/Rankin Inlet Officers of the Chesterfield Inlet detachment of the RCMP responded to a request for assistance in locating a person who fell into the water while rafting to an egg-picking location on First Lake on July 3.

The body of an adult male was recovered from First Lake, located about three kilometres from the community, with the assistance of members of the community.

Meanwhile, a nine-month-old baby was medevaced to Winnipeg after being injured when a gun was discharged in a home in Rankin Inlet on July 2.

The baby was in an adjacent room when the weapon was discharged.

Well, valued readers, another year has passed us by and another decade has come to end.

Life is good, but it, indeed, does go by fast.

All in all, 2019 was a good year for the Kivalliq region, especially our regional hub, Rankin Inlet, despite the fact our territorial capital, Iqaluit, is leaving us behind in the dust when it comes to the type of community amenities that attract successful business and productive people.

In fact, just the opposite is occurring as the list of talented, dedicated, motivated and inspired Inuit who leave Rankin for better opportunities in Iqaluit and beyond continues to grow.

Once a common term in its usage, "brain drain" is a particularly sinister occurrence in that its someSanikiluaq what debilitating effects on a community are often spread out over a period of time, so communities don't feel just how much they're being impacted by the exodus until they begin to struggle years later.

Feedback needed Rankin Inlet The Kagniqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) began looking for feedback from the community of Rankin Inlet on an important restoration project after the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) was approved for funds to conduct some coastal restoration projects.

The Rankin HTO recommended that coastal restoration activities be focused on allowing Arctic char to climb the Sulukpaugalik River once again, with the work being done mostly by local Inuit over the course of two weeks in 2020.

Local heroes Rankin Inlet A large group of kids gathered at John Ayaruaq Library at Maani Ulujuk Ilinnarvik for a special afternoon highlighted by RCMP officers and volunteer firemen – and their vehicles – on Aug. 8, in Rankin Inlet.

The Meet Your Local Heroes initiative was the brainchild of the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre in Rankin and its new executive director, Charlene Williams-Kaludjak, who took over her new position on June 3.

Language development Kivalliq/Nunavut It was announced in August that Inuktut Language Arts 1 (ILA1) – developed for kindergarten to Grade 6 by the Department of Education's curriculum development division – and Inuktut Language Arts 2 (ILA2) were expected to launch for field testing in the coming few months.

The ILA1 is designed to be used with students whose first language is Inuktut, and who are very fluent in Inuktut.

Program boost Arviat John Arnalukjuak High School (JAHS) looked to start the new school year on a bright note with the return of a full music program.

Teacher Gord Billard said Curtis Metcalf had returned to JAHS, where he ran a great music program about four years ago that included the start of an orchestra of students and teachers.

September ᓯᑎᐱᕆ Special needs Rankin Inlet Michael Tutanuak, 4, was back in kindergarten full time thanks to the efforts of his mom, Samantha Nakoolak, who wouldn't take no for an answer.

Tutanuak faces challenges with his speech and was told he may only be able to attend three days a week due to a shortage of staff at Leo Ussak Elementary School in Rankin Inlet.

Young hunters Rankin Inlet Upwards of 30 youths aged 13 to 19 began participating in a Young Hunter's program delivered by the Kangiqlinq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO) in Rankin Inlet.

The program was organized by HTO member Andrew Akerolik.

Student award Rankin Inlet Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik Class of 2019 graduate Katrina Anderson was presented with the Governor General's Academic Medal in Rankin Inlet.

The medal is awarded annually to the student graduating with the highest grade point average from a Canadian high school, college or university program.

Body found Baker Lake After almost six weeks of intense searches on air, land and water, closure came to family and friends when the body of Solomon (Sala) Tulurialik was finally located on Sept. 13.

The 29-year-old went missing on July 31 while trying to swim to shore after the boat he was on ran out of gas.

ITK awards Arviat/Rankin Inlet September saw Kukik Baker receive the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) Advancement of Youth award for Arviat's Young Hunter's program.

Rankin's Daisy Panika earned ITK's Advancement of Women award for her work on the Somebody's Daughter program, and Rankin's Krista Zawadski earned the Inuit Cultural Repatriation award for demonstrating leadership in recognizing and respecting Inuit cultural rights, and rallying against the misappropriation of Inuit cultural heritage.

October ÖúêበFiles found Rankin Inlet The North West Co. issued a public information release notifying Kivalliq residents that materials containing health information had been recovered from the Rankin Inlet landfill site this past Feb. 28.

The information belonged to patients of Sakku Drugs (since purchased by the North West Co.) and contained patient names, health card numbers, birth dates and prescribed medications.

Sewing buzz Rankin Inlet A large number of people took full advantage of a sewing machine workshop, including free repairs, at the Rankin Inlet Visitor's Centre from Oct. 7 to 10.

Facilitated by Winnipeg's Gary Israel, sessions were held on a walk-in basis, with repairs being done in front of people while they listened and learned.

Learning skills Chesterfield Inlet Regular classes were put on hold for a week as senior students at Victor Sammurtok School (VSS) finally got the chance to take part in Trades Awareness, Skills and Knowledge (TASK) Week learning opportunities in Chesterfield Inlet from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.

The TASK week initiative is a partnership between Agnico Eagle Mines, the Government of Nunavut, the territorial Department of Education and Nunavut Arctic College.

Tragic death Rankin Inlet An 11-year-old girl died when a 13-year-old driver lost control of the side-by-side utility vehicle they were driving in near Leo Ussak Elementary School in Rankin Inlet on Oct. 15.

Two other passengers in the vehicle – aged two and 13 – were treated for minor injuries at the Kivalliq Regional Health Centre and released.

It's been a tough road for the special needs child and his mom, Arlene Ikinilik, 28, but the two continue to defy the odds together as Brett enjoys life every day, despite the challenges he faced from being born with a defective heart and doctors telling his mom he wasn't going to make it.

Table Tennis triumph Rankin Inlet Members of the Rankin Inlet table tennis team brought home a total of eight medals from the territorial trials in Iqaluit, capturing gold in U15 women's doubles, silver in U18 men's singles, and bronze in U18 mixed doubles, U15 Mixed doubles and U15 men's singles.

Gholam Dareshoripour was selected for the Arctic Winter Games squad during the event.

Focus on issues Nunavut Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, 25, originally from Baker Lake, continued to remind the media her time in government is about the issues and getting results, not her age or gender, after the NDP candidate took 41 per cent of the vote to become Nunavut's Member of Parliament during the federal election.

December éπçበYoung chiefs Rankin Inlet Members of the Rankin Inlet Fire Department welcomed their six 2019 junior fire chiefs for a day to the fire station for all sorts of fun and tasty goodies to end the year on a positive note.

The six junior fire chiefs were Leo Ussak Elementary School students Kalluk Eecherk (Kindergarten), Naomi Osborne (Grade 1), Ariana Makpah (Grade 2), Gianna Hernandez (Grade 3), Lila Hunter (Grade 4) and Princess Rachael Grace (Grade 4).

Rankin Inlet A sewing program being operated by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre began gaining big time popularity after posting great early results in Rankin Inlet.

The program, funded through Indian Residential School Survivors money, saw 16 participants make their own amautik, which they were allowed to keep after completion.

Elder facility a go

New president

Kivalliq/Rankin Inlet The Kivalliq region finally heard the new it's long awaited when November saw a 24-bed, multimillion elder-care facility be approved for Rankin Inlet in the Department of Health's capital budget.

The facility will be the first of three constructed in Nunavut.

Kivalliq Kono Tattuinee bested incumbent David Ningeongan and former Whale Cove mayor Stanley Adjuk to be elected president of the Kivalliq Inuit Association on Dec. 11.

The election had to be delayed two days due to blizzard conditions affecting three communities.

Baker Lake Each of the eight candles on Brett-Granderson Arnalugaq Ikinilik's most recent birthday cake in Baker Lake marked one year the boy was never supposed to see.

Rankin Inlet Folks in Rankin Inlet rose to the challenge and organized an emergency fundraiser for elder Adele Angidlik, 86, who lost everything to a fire that struck her Rankin home on Dec. 23.
