Jallianwala Bagh The shame of a Nation Monday, 16 December 2013

Sardar & Nehru Vallabhbhai, upon deciding to devote his life to the cause of Indian Independence, said, “ No doubt my law practice is flourishing...but the struggle is bigger than that. My practice may or may not be there tomorrow. My money will be blown away tomorrow. Prison

it was only a matter of time!

In March 1930 Gandhiji had the brilliant idea of his now famous

Salt March to protest against the British taxing salt, an item which could be easily scooped up from any sea shore. Sardar was sent ahead to organise the march and he was immediately arrested and sent to prison. This was the first of his many spells in prison over the next sixteen years. Many other national leaders and others were also arrested and imprisoned.

Bardoli THE SATYAGRAHA In April 1928 he was asked by Gandhiji to lead a campaign in Bardoli. It needed a person who could campaign full time, hence Vallabhbhai resigned from his municipal duties so he could devote his whole time to the campaign in Bardoli. Vallabhbhai carefully examined the peasants grievances in Bardoli, the main thrust of which was that at a time when the peasants were suffering, the British imposed a massive increase in taxes and imposed punitive fines for non-payment. He travelled all over the area

and made the peasants strong in their resolve to resist payment of the taxes. The people were afraid that their lands would be

“I know that some of you are afraid of your lands being confiscated by the British....do not be afraid, the British can hardly put your lands on their backs and carry them away to England. confiscated. He said to them

...and so they Called him

Sardar

After a long hard and bitter struggle, the British relented and better terms were reached and some suffering of the peasants was relieved. This was almost unheard of. It was news all over India and Vallabhbhai became a much admired and nationally renowned figure. It was at this time in June 1929 that he was acclaimed as Sardar ( The Chief ).
