This is a guide to the Estate but also a look at some of the areas near and nearby the Estate

INTRODUCTION Dance is perhaps the most shining achievement of humanity. Words do not easily capture the vibrancy, the energy, the ecstasy and so much more of a Garba happening and its blissful blend of music and dance, glowing and flowing with grace and radiance. Every year around late September early October, for nine continuous nights Gujaratis all over the world dissolve in dances of delight and devotion during Navratri. The events are filled with the noise and swaying of people, the tinkling and jingling of the dancers and the delighted faces of the audience amazed by this rapture. Garba and Raas have been borne out of much wonderful and profound thinking and were conceived in ancient times, possibly 3000 years ago. Having survived and evolved, they continue to enrich and enliven us today. The dance and the music of Garba and Raas is spectacular and special; it transcends the dancers and the gathering in enchanting enlightenment.

7

8

Navratri Dance and music also have a greater higher purpose in life and Garba and Raas are infused with meaning and purpose. There is profound wisdom embraced in and by Garba and Raas and their surrounding and abundant philosophy and heritage. They have universal appeal and those of other faiths, and those of little or no faith, can all pleasantly engage in these dances. You do not need to have any belief or seek any meaning to take part. Take part as little or as much as you want and aspects of the grace of Garba and Raas will leave you enhanced and enriched. Engaging in this circular and cosmic dance also provides a wonderful chance to allow us to mix and mingle with our friends, our families and our wider society. This Dance happening provides a healthy and enjoyable way of refreshing and rejuvenating ourselves and the people around and about us. Though Garba and Raas are generally associated with Navratri. their scope and reach is far wider than the devotional worship during Navratri. As dances they can be done for other celebrations, and many times just for joy and for the sake of dancing them. Their delightful traits make them 9

suitable as universal dances, for most occasions during many seasons and amidst diverse places.

Universality One aim of this work to expand awareness of Garba and Raas and other dance forms. This may allow us to see how best these enriching dances may take place more often, at regular and frequent times throughout the year. This work also seeks to inspire and encourage others in the hope that our experience of Garba and Raas and Dance may be enhanced and improved.

Garba and Raas are not restricted to Gujarat. They are danced wherever there are Gujaratis. They are not the exclusive preserve of Gujaratis either, they are a common enchantment for all races, colours and faiths over all five continents and many places in between. It is important therefore that we daily embrace and appreciate the bliss and the benediction, that has been bestowed upon us, simply by having 10

the ability to move and to dance. We are also fortunate to have the chance to do this in the most graceful, elegant, wild and wonderful ways, in innumerable settings, to awesome melodies and tunes that line up all the ways to the stars. Passion There is a great deal in Garba and Raas to excite and enrich most everyone, young and old, male or female, rich or poor, any race, caste, creed or faith. Those who are passionate about Garba, and eagerly await its exciting and glorious arrival every year, know the enchantment that Garba brings. Those new to Garba, or perhaps disillusioned with Garba, may find this work interesting hopefully Dance is universal, it reaches, rejuvenates and refreshes.. everyone...everywhere.

Dancing The Dance The dance is a worship of the whole body and a worship by the whole body. Your bare feet step and thump and beat on the ground Your meridians and whole being shudders and flows with their impact; Refreshingly your feet carry you away. Rarely do people get a chance to wave their hands and use the power of their arms to swing and click, and have a great time while doing so. The dance allows us to transcend and it soothes and sustains us. It is a whole exercise for ourselves. The good Garba steps, shake, rattle and roll your body in the right blend and rhythm and create momentum like a gyroscope, so you can spin and oscillate in balance and in harmony and keep going on and on and on. After a time the steps flow well and an almost perpetual motion ensues and enfolds. This physical action in conjunction with the pleasant dance, the music, the radiant people and situation is a heightened way of enriching ourselves, our body and our being. The parry of the hits from the others and the many ways the sticks are clicked. Gentle, hard 13

soft - missed - with ferocity, with indifference, with a flirting glance, in a tantalising trance; with a aren’t we having fun glance. The eyes meet, the eyes of a stranger, those of a friend, the glance of a dancer, the gaze of a trancer. The way that some of the dancers move in such swirling and flowing motion, in harmony and glow, swift and speedy, In an instance they are gone to the far side, only to reappear moments later, twirling and swirling, spinning and weaving, again and again, round and around ..... all over the ground. These are not mere dancers, they are far more, taking part in this cosmic ballet of grace and devotion and being part of a wonderous performance, such that the gods and goddesses smile and play, dally and dance in wonder and merriment, gazing in amazement on the spinners and shakers, the spinners and swirlers, trancing around the ground in their devotion profound A communion, a bringing and coming together, a flowing and growing together. Magical, almost mysterious, It is not the kind of dance you see anywhere else. Atomic, this spinning around, fast and furious, echoing the motions of protons and

15

positrons, sparks and quarks, spinning and sparkling around a nucleus. The circle is the ideal shape, arrangement, composition, you would not find this fascination in a dance which has any other shape or arrangement. There is something about a circle which is divine, essential, foundational. A circle roots you, but also keeps you within, so you do not spin and shoot away. It seems natural to these dancers that they should move and flow in this way. And they flow and move and swirl and spin in the most awesome and amazing dazzlement. Here in a gyroscope you are held in balance and harmony and the gravity of the spin and spinning keeps you in orbit. It is a evocation of the spinning of the cosmos, the essence that holds the stars and planets in play and sway. This dance of devotion binding these dancers together in dancing deliriousness. This is not mere dancing, it is something on another cosmic scale. This is a differing dimension, it is sparkling and shining devotion, playing and flowing with the divine.

16

Is it any wonder that trance descends and transcendence and transformation happen.

Location The Estate is located next to woods and a small river, on the edge of a reservoir. The fresh air from the woods, river, reservoirs and heaths nearby maintain the fresh and clean atmosphere of the Estate and provide a contrast to the noise of the planes flying overhead The Estate is not in a remote area like many other trading and industrial estates, the Estate is on the edge of an area where people live, where they shop and work and go about their daily lives. The Estate Is well situated and located. It has good air, road and rail links . The Estate has good access to the motorway network with the M3 and M4 being nearby with the M25 just beyond. Feltham Mainline Station which is just a mile away provides a frequent service to London Waterloo taking only 30 minutes The Underground network is easily accessible with Hatton Cross Station on the Piccadilly Line 21

being just over a mile away and within walking distance And of course Heathrow Airport is nearby, only about two miles away. The Estate is located on the fringes of the airport. The Estate is well served by the following bus routes; NoNoNoNoN0No-

Yes the Estate has planes flying overhead, but you soon get used to the noise. Even though we do not alway look you never get used to the majesty of the planes, as we watch them close to landing or having just taken off. A multitude of people hover over the Estate all day long a hundred feet up

practice, buildings are commissioned and designed, constructed and built, refurbished and redecorated , fitted and fixed, let and leased, sold and disposed, We take much of our man made wonders for granted, as many of these are done all over the world,. Still, it occurs that so much intelligence, such skill, such experience and effort has gone into all the plans and the planning, capable and able thought and care expended, from conception to accomplishment, from marketing to completing. It was a long bitter struggle to have these ideals enshrined in law and then in practice. Donkey Wood Donkey Wood is located on the edge of the east boundary of the Estate. It represents one of the most attractive, best known and popular public open space sections of the riverside lands bordering the River Crane within Hounslow’s Green Belt. It is one of the most significant areas of semi natural woodland in the Hounslow area and supports a variety of wildlife interests but is perhaps best known as the location of the former Bedfont Gunpowder Mills, relics of which are still visible today In the past ten years considerable improvements have been carried out to make the woods and the paths more accessible. This is a peaceful place to take a walk and a alternative place to eat your lunch or a space to walk after lunch. There is a wooden walkway in Donkey Wood of over a hundred yards. A short stroll upon this to forget your troubles and cares, to wonder and ponder rambling on the wooded walkway, amongst lush greenery, beside the banks of a streamy river, with bridges and weirs, now here, then there.

69

And just next to you is the Estate, the tops of its gleaming steel building glimpsed through the trees, this oasis of tranquility, right beside a trading estate, a light industrial estate, this contrast of the natural and the man made world of concrete and steel. They both have their benefits and virtues, and this combination of the two of them beside each other is fairly unique and quite rare. Just turn through the the entrance and you find yourself in another world, a different aura, amidst the fauna and the flora. We are lucky to have these woods on our doorsteps. Good care has been taken, much cost has been expended; it is fitting that these woods and walks be appreciated and enjoyed

Local Area The bazaars and the malls and the hotels, walks, woods, rivers , stream, lakes, gardens, royal parks, palaces, airports, planes, boats, cruisers, golfing greens, heathland rambles, wildlife and flora and fauna all lie a short distance from the Estate This whole place and the area within ten miles around and about is outstanding in the richness of its beauty and so many places with picture postcard names and settings, with the look and the feel to go with that. There is a limit to what you can say about a trading estate but there is a great deal to be said about areas near and nearby

The River Thames The Estate has quick and easy access to several bends of the winding Thames as it flows from Isleworth to Windsor and beyond. A short journey soon brings you to the graciously flowing beauty of this enchanting river, 71

All the more enchanting as this is not in the middle of nowhere, but about 25 minutes from Central London. The proximity of the Central London adds to the richness of the place and makes you appreciate the setting more deeply. So many picturesque places to explore and all the while you are not far away from comfort and convenience. Twickenham Is just over 3 miles from the Estate and takes about 10 minutes by car. The River Thames flows in a wonderful setting at Twickenham. The walk along the riverbank from Twickenham to Richmond is filed with pleasant views and awesome vistas. You are walking on the waters edge, in a serene and fresh atmosphere. You can cross over the footbridge onto Eel Pie Island, where rock gods performed many years ago and discover there now a quiet peaceful secluded community

72

Twickenham has many shops and restaurants however just short stroll away and you discover the banks of the river, where the air is calm and the people are friendly. The quaint shopping walk that is Church Street. Brimming with boutiques and restaurants. During the summer on several days a week the street is closed to cars in the evenings. The restaurants lay out their tables in the open air and people eat and drink in a festive and fun setting. This is an experience not to be missed. As you walk and explore, you come to the Riverside Gardens of York House, where there are statues of water nymphs set around a fountain. A small road bridge lets you cross over into York House where you are met with a sunken garden, which is a rare sight and you can sit and relax and chill there. There is a small Zen setting with a pond and just sitting there takes you into mellow meditation. York House is now the office and chamber of Richmond upon Thames Council. In the past it was owned by a succession of aristocrats, the pretender to the French throne, Phillipe comte de Paris and later by Sir Ratan Tata the Indian merchant prince. 73

The pleasant journeys by bus to Twickenham Easy and quick access to many picturesque places A small guide to some of the most beautiful parts of the world Hampton Court Palace Hampton Court Palace is well known but few people walk along its southern banks, where there are pleasant locks and flowing weirs and you can sit and relax soaking in the river mood. State just writing about a few of the writers favorite places and here are many more Sunbury Where you are right at the waters edge, where there are never too many people. Web Presence For those familiar with the estate and the locale will know of the many facilities and attractions set out here, for those who are new or not so familiar hopefully this work will provide a guide and overview of the area, the businesses and its attractions To provide information for potential workers and occupiers, all mostly in one place. An intraweb for the estate and all benefits that follow from that. Even if the site serves no commercial purpose it is a way of preserving and recording this heritage. To help build a stronger and more united community. There are many diverse interests and many common interests, to be promoted and advanced. Could not find any other sites like this. They are all directed to selling or letting property, not connection between the people and the businesses on the estate. A blue print that can use all around the world There are many empty units perhaps a good web site may help in letting them 81

The site will be a reminder that everything on the estate has a value, a function and worth. Even the empty units serve to remind us of the hardworking activity going on all around the estate.
