[DONOR] INTEGRATIVE ARTS FACILITY [DONOR] INTEGRATIVE ARTS FACILITY

Our team understands the importance of craft in architecture and desires to highlight craft as labor and craft as innovation. We plan on using innovation as an inspiration to push the boundaries of OSU’s traditional campus design standards while reflecting on what it means to expand your knowledge as a student in higher education. By using the design guidelines as a starting point, rather than the end goal, we aim to create a facility that will be at home in an ever-changing campus. Our team looks to the idea of craft as labor as a guiding principle to highlight the effort and skill that goes into the construction industry, which is very similar to the effort and skill that is poured into any work of art. To imitate perfection would be to discount the hands that have created the facility.

Most buildings on campus are horizontal in nature, and are designed much wider than they are deep. The majority of buildings are three stories tall, with a fourth floor “attic”.

Social Sciences and Humanities
Punched windows with cast stone trim tend to dominate the campus, allowing small slivers of light into the building at any one opening.

Edmon Low Library
Buildings on campus are classified as foreground or background buildings. Foreground buildings are iconic to the University and tend to receive more unique detailing.

Spears School of Business
Symmetry is emphasized strongly in the OSU Design Guidelines, especially in instances where there are two entrances.
STRICT ADHERENCE

McKnight Center
The McKnight Center breaks away from punched windows to feature large curtain walls, making it appear much lighter than the typical OSU building.

Endeavor Lab
The Endeavor Lab combines OSUs brick blend with curtain walls and expressive shading structures, making it unique on the campus.

ROOF DRAINAGE
The roof consists of 4 unique levels: the two wings are even, and the studio and penthouse rise above them. In order to avoid the need for visible gutters or scuppers, the penthouse and roof drain onto the two wings, which direct water to interior roof drains.

PV PANELS
7,200 SF of PV Panels are situated on the South wing of the building, which is equal to 20.9% of the building’s area. The panels are angled at 36.01° for maximum efficiency. These panels help to reduce the building’s expected EUI from 48.27 KBtu/ft2/yr to 2.10 KBtu/ft2/yr.

Envelope
Cast stone, red brick, and curtain wall systems enclose the Integrated Arts Center, resembling OSU’s typical designs while pushing forward to a more modern design.
HVAC
A system comprised of two Air Handling Units, serviced by a ground source heat pump (GSHP) and a chilled water pump will keep the building comfortable year-round.
Structure
Structural steel is exposed throughout the project to highlight the craft of the construction industry, and OSU-orange brace frames are showcased in the Open Studio.
Organization
The open studio serves as both a hierarchical and organizational center, rising above the brick wings with its curtain walls.
