deep. Go this

“Teaching 70-minute classes is an intellectual game changer.”

You hear that sentiment a lot from our faculty, and that’s because at NMH, we do things differently. With our distinctive CollegeModel Academic Program (CMAP), you take more core academic courses in a year than at other schools: three full-year-equivalent courses each semester, which adds up to six for the whole school year. More like college. And whatever the course, whether it’s STEM Physics or World Literature or Comparative Politics, you’ll get to know the subject inside and out. You’ll also have more opportunities to get to know your teachers — some of the most inspiring and knowledgeable people you’ll ever meet.

Small classes. Big conversations. NMH’s class size — roughly 12 students — makes for meaningful debate and in-depth discussion. Our faculty members teach roughly 30 students each semester — so they have more time and attention to share.

Mary Hefner

BIOLOGY TEACHER “One of the things we do in the linked Honors-AP Biology class is study the biodiversity of plant life in NMH’s forest. It’s both satisfying and fascinating to bring students into these woods — a place I know so well — and lead them toward discovery.”

“At the beginning of this course, I knew little to nothing about biology, but I ended up taking the AP exam and completing my own independent study project.”

Gus, junior

DEERFIELD, MA “This class was partially inspired by E.O. Wilson, who coined the term ‘biodiversity’ and who also visited campus recently. The greater an area’s biodiversity, the better it can adapt to change.”

Come explore.

Our 1,353-acre campus is a remarkable learning environment — from the woods to the Connecticut River, from the quiet corners of the library to the bustle of the dining hall. Find your favorite places.

know. Find your footing, then apply what you

Because knowledge is only the beginning.

At NMH, we’ll challenge you to take what you learn and use it to navigate complex situations and solve real problems on and off campus. Our social entrepreneurship course — part of the Center for Learning Through Action — mines student ingenuity to create business models that address social, economic, environmental, and educational issues. Become one of our Ecoleaders and help the school develop new sustainability practices. Join our Uruguay Immersion summer course and you’ll stay with a host family in Montevideo, where you’ll do everything — from homework to community service to simply hanging out — in Spanish. Participate in our Model UN program, and you might find yourself on a plane to Qatar. NMH is one of the few U.S. high schools invited to participate in Georgetown University’s prestigious Qatar Model UN conference.

Where will you go? Our College-Model Academic Program (CMAP) allows students to travel with their classmates and teachers for one to three weeks while continuing their studies. Sophomore Humanities students can go to Brazil, Morocco and Spain, or South Africa, integrating religious studies, world literature, and world history. Juniors can travel to destinations across the United States to study American History and American Literature. The New Zealand program for upper level students combines English, history, and environmental studies.

So much is possible. What will you do?

stand strong. You can

Because we’ve got your back.

At Northfield Mount Hermon, no one goes it alone. With so many opportunities and experiences within your grasp, how will you find a path that’s fulfilling, focused on achievement, and maybe even life-changing? Every NMH student is surrounded by a network of compassionate adult mentors: advisors, teachers, coaches, and residential staff. It’s what we call our Partnership of 12. We guide you on your individual journey and help you become the best version of yourself.

Sky-high aspirations? We’ll get you there.

Down to earth,

NMH is a bustling, vibrant place — because li just as important as academics. That’s what bein

around the clock.

life outside the classroom is ng well-grounded is all about. We love good food. Meals at NMH are nutritious, creative, and, most important, delicious. Veggies, maple syrup, and cider come from our very own campus farm, and we always try to buy ingredients from local producers. Your home away from home? The NMH dorms. They range in style from grand to cozy. Depending on the size of the dorm, there are one to five faculty members — plus their families — in residence.

All students participate in our “workjob” program, contributing a few hours each week in the dining hall, in a school office, on a cleaning crew, or on the farm.

Get dressed up and dance at Dwight Night. Run a race for pie. Get competitive at Hogolympics (NMH’s mascot is a “hogger”). We have some great traditions at Northfield Mount Hermon — ask about them when you visit campus. Learn to make the right decision at the right time. Our Student Life Seminars promote responsibility, integrity, and moral leadership.

Lend a hand. Our service learning program draws nearly a third of our students, who volunteer more than 6,000 hours every year, both on and off campus.

With dozens and dozens of clubs, organizations, and affinity groups, you’ll have no trouble making the most of your out-of-class time. And if you don’t see an organization that speaks to you, start a new one! On this campus, more is more.

We all bring something different to the school. Multiculturalism is at the core of NMH. From our Diversity and Social Justice course to events that students get to help organize and lead, mutual respect and tolerance are our top priorities.

Weekends are busy. On campus, you’ll find lots of activities and events. Or venture off campus on a trip to the mall, the local movie theaters, other boarding schools for dances or events, and nearby towns for dinner and shopping.

Boulo

BEVERLY, MA “Everyone in the dorms is the same age but from completely different backgrounds. The best friend you’ve been searching for could be in your dorm. And he could be from France!”

Aidan

BOXFORD, MA

“People here become really close and open with one another. We do a lot of things together as a group, and life throughout the year is very laid-back.”

Aran

SINGAPORE

“NMH is just incredibly welcoming and feels like home. And the food really surprised me. The food at my old school was nowhere near as good as here.”

Lay the foundation. Living in the ninth-grade dorms helps students build relationships with a diverse group of peers and get comfortable in their new environment.

Cultivate your creativity. Is there something in the air at NMH? Could be, because over the years, we’ve graduated more than our fair share of leading performing and visual artists — Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy winners, a MacArthur Foundation “genius,” an award-winning White House photographer. And that’s just the beginning. Arts offerings at NMH include dance, music, theater, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, video and film, and digital design. Our philosophy is all about process — that all students benefit from exploring their artistic side. Yes, the talent and skills that emerge in AP Drawing are pretty amazing, but no more so than the enthusiasm on display in the Dance for Athletes class. Prepare to try something new — and be inspired!

63,000 square feet of imagination. The Rhodes Arts Center is heralded as one of the finest high school arts buildings in the country. It contains visual art studios, music practice rooms, two dance studios, a concert hall, two theaters, an electronic-music studio, and an art gallery. The RAC, as it’s known, hosts 60 student performances a year, plus exhibits by visiting and campus artists.

NMH has 65 teams in 20 sports — one of the most comprehensive high school athletic programs in the country — so you’ll have no trouble finding your niche at NMH, whether you’re a varsity competitor who’s been training for years or you’re just starting out in a new sport. Our goal is to help you achieve more than you thought you could. At both the individual and team levels, you’ll run faster, jump higher, pursue excellence, and have fun doing it. You’ll gain ground at NMH. Fun facts: More than 75 NMH alumni are currently playing on NCAA sports teams, and we send more basketball players to the Ivy League than any other high school in the country. Our rowing alums include a member of the U.S. national team that won Olympic gold and a World Championship, not to mention other NCAA champions.

Get out there. If you’ve been to campus, you know that NMH is perfectly situated for all kinds of athletic adventures. Besides our roster of traditional sports, the Outdoor Education Program offers all sorts of activities: mountain biking, rock climbing, or canoeing, anyone?

Well-prepared to

thrive. Are NMH students competitive?

Absolutely — but not in the way you might expect. Instead of competing against each other, our students are engaged in the relentless pursuit of personal best, and team up to tackle real-world problems. That might mean using engineering know-how and 3D-printing to get unused hotel toiletries into the hands of local shelters. Coding a financial aid estimator. Honing debating skills on a Model United Nations trip to Greece. Or creating protocol for remediating gasoline spills in freshwater environments. The world’s a competitive place. By fostering creativity and collaboration at every turn, we’ll make sure you’re more than ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead. You’ll be ready for whatever the future holds.

Character counts. Developing empathy and tenacity is just as important in our community — and the world beyond campus — as intellectual rigor. In our 9th and 10th grade humanities courses, students ask themselves big questions: Who am I? What does it mean to be human? What is my place? How then shall I live?

David, Columbia University NMH is like walking into a candy shop for the mind. One of my biggest influences was my math teacher. He built this love of math in me — specifically, the idea that math can be used to interpret the world. I was also influenced by a guest speaker who came to campus, a researcher who talked about the amazing potential of graphene, a revolutionary material that is one of the hottest topics in materials science today. I spent two summers studying graphene, and I’ve published two articles in scientific journals as a result of this research — one of which I presented at the SPIE Smart Structures/NDE Conference in San Diego. Intellectual curiosity — that’s what NMH helped me develop.

Eyes on the stars. Feet firmly planted. We want you to be prepared for any environment and any kind of future. Ultimately, an NMH education is about building a solid foundation. We guide students onto a path that’s fulfilling, full of accomplishment, maybe even a little bit world-changing.

Xiaoxian “Lily”, Cornell University “NMH taught me how to be an independent student and to strive for the best — not just the best grade, but my own best performance. This attitude is especially helpful in challenging courses; I am taking some junior- and seniorlevel college courses as a freshman.” Eli, Union College “The academics at NMH were challenging and prepared me very well for a similar standard in college, but the most important skill I learned from NMH is how to interact with people different from myself.” Abby, Dartmouth College “At NMH, students engage with their peers and teachers both in and out of the classroom. This fosters both scholarship and lasting friendships, as it allows for an environment of students interested in learning.” Charlie, Duke University “NMH faculty are not just people who teach us material. They are also mentors in what we do outside the classroom, and that is really powerful.”
