Welina mai me ke aloha!
Long before the Royal Hawaiian Center took shape, this wahi pana (sacred place) was known as Helumoa, a vast coconut grove legendarily attributed to Kākuhihewa, the great 16th-century chief that ruled over O‘ahu. For centuries, Helumoa’s palms offered rest and refuge to generations of ali‘i, from Kamehameha I to Princess Bernice Pauahi.
We celebrate that legacy in this issue’s culture story, where Helumoa’s verdant past finds contemporary expression in our Royal Grove (page 52). This heritage unfolds not only in the center’s landscape, but in practice as our line-up of complimentary cultural programming animates the center into a living gathering place, with hula kahiko performances, lei-making workshops, and more (pages 12 to 15).
Elsewhere, we step into the rhythm of fitness trainer and Schellin Fit founder Justine Kurihara, who guides us through a day at the center: from morning shoreline rituals to an afternoon of shopping and an evening spent lingering over shared meals (page 32).
While you explore our center’s mix of luxury brands, international dining, and local boutiques, find stylish inspiration in this issue’s fashion editorial, showcasing the newest looks from Ferragamo, Hermès, Fendi, and Saint Laurent (page 22). Or turn to our favorite trends from the spring and summer runways, distilled for a certain tropical resort chic (page 18).
As you wander through all that our center has to offer, may your time with us echo what generations of visitors have experienced: the center as a space of shade and sustenance, of celebration and return. And may your ‘ohana (family) come together, again and again, to create new memories beneath the Royal Grove’s canopy.
He mai!

From morning workouts to matcha breaks and thoughtful finds, the fitness trainer and founder of Schellin Fit maps out her perfect day at the Royal Hawaiian Center.

Justine Kurihara’s path to fitness began in Los Angeles, where she first worked as a model. As she acclimated to the move from her native Tokyo to sunny L.A., she found herself drawn to the city’s wellness culture. Soon, she was deep into the city’s health and fitness scene, drawn less to the aesthetics than the structure of discipline and routine. Returning to Japan, she found herself at the forefront of a still-emerging category: the fitness model. Her popularity soared as wellness found a global foothold. Then, she met her future husband Takashi Kurihara, a former wide receiver for Japan’s national American football team. (More recent fans might recognize him on Netflix’s newest physical survival series, Final Draft.)
Eventually, Justine stepped away from traditional modeling and transitioned into fitness training, sharing her approach through her brand, Schellin Fit. Two years, ago Justine and Takashi took to the leap to live on O‘ahu full-time, wanting to raise their growing family outside of Japan. The Royal Hawaiian Center has become one of Justine’s go-to spots, where mornings at the beach often turn into afternoons of shopping and evenings dining out with family. Here, Justine takes us through her favorite places to shop and dine.

BANÁN
BUILDING C, LEVEL 1
After mornings at the beach, I love taking my family to get a treat at Banán. The Chunkadelic has become my favorite flavor, especially with the scoops of macadamia nut honey butter. And even though they’re satisfyingly delicious, the healthy ingredients make them so guilt-free.

LAGREE O‘AHU

ISLAND VINTAGE SHAVE ICE BUILDING B, LEVEL 1-KIOSK

Once a vast royal planting, Helumoa lives on in the Royal Grove as a celebration of the coconut’s enduring role in Native Hawaiian culture.

Once, Waikīkī was home to a storied ulu niu (coconut grove), a canopy of coconut palms said to number in the thousands. Some mo‘olelo (legends) traced the oldest trees to the 16th century, planted by Kākuhihewa, one of O‘ahu’s most powerful ali‘i ‘ai moku (ruling chiefs), as an act of tribute to the phantom rooster, Ka‘auhelemoa.
The rooster had been legendarily elusive, until one afternoon, when it appeared before Kākuhihewa and clawed at the earth at his feet. Kākuhihewa ordered that a coconut be planted at the marked spot at once. In time, the single palm multiplied into a broad swatch of niu (coconuts) stretching along Waikīkī’s shoreline. The place came to be known as Helumoa, or “chicken scratch,” named for the earth-scratching rooster of its legendary origins.
The grove was a defining feature of Waikīkī. It stood majestic in tintype photographs, palm leaves silhouetting the cutting profile of Lē‘ahi (Diamond Head) or towering over the humble cottage built for Kamehameha V. Written accounts, too, have recorded the grove through the years, from Native Hawaiian scholar Samuel M. Kamakau’s foundational chronicle, Ruling Chiefs of Hawai‘i, to Mark Twain’s dispatches from the islands. As Twain wrote upon arriving on O‘ahu, “We rounded the promontory of Diamond Head, bringing into view a Grove of Coconut Trees (the first ocular proof that we were in the tropics).”
Indeed, coconut trees swaying languidly along a white sand beach has defined not only Waikīkī, but all of the Pacific, a visual shorthand for a tropical escape. Yet, in Hawaiian culture, as across Polynesia, the plant is more than a mere ornament. It occupies a singular place as one of the foundational “canoe

crops” introduced by Polynesian voyagers, brought from their ancestral homelands: kalo (taro), ‘ulu (breadfruit), mai‘a (banana), and niu.
Although less cultivated than kalo and ‘ulu, the coconut was nonetheless indispensable. “There was no other plant that was as completely utilized,” wrote E.S. Craighill and Elizabeth Green Handy in their seminal Native Planters in Old Hawaii. Its trunk is carved into pahu, the large wooden drums instrumental to hula. Its fibers are braided into ‘aha, cordage used to lash together canoe parts and build houses. And, of course, there are the delicacies: from the popular haupia to the delectable kūlolo, a pudding of grated kalo corm and coconut cream.
It is no surprise, then, that royal groves such as Helumoa were planted by ali‘i across the islands. In Mānā, on the westside of Kaua‘i, once stood
a famous grove to commemorate the island’s new ali‘i. On Moloka‘i, a thousand trees were planted by King Kamehameha V, one tree for each of his warriors. It remains today as Kapuāiwa Coconut Grove. Meanwhile, in Waikīkī, the Royal Hawaiian Center calls the storied landscape of Helumoa home, where the center’s Royal Grove is a reminder of the ulu niu’s onceexpansive canopy.
Built in 2007 as part of the center’s major renovation, the Royal Grove may at first glance appear as another place to pause. In actuality, the vibrant fronds shading visitors are a contemporary echo of a deeper genealogy. Though the trees are only ornamental in nature, devoid of fruit for safety reasons, their mere existence is an invocation of Helumoa’s historic identity. For example, when a tree must be felled,

either due to age, safety, or construction, cultural director Monte McComber sets the trunk aside for Kumu Hula Brad Cooper, who then carves it into a pahu. Recently, McComber has planted a dwarf coconut, recalling the traditional way such trees were cultivated.
Still, even as the Royal Grove stands as a living testament of the niu’s celebrated place in Hawaiian culture, the plant’s future in the islands has grown increasingly uncertain. The coconut rhinoceros beetle, first detected on O‘ahu in 2013, has introduced a new and urgent threat. The stakes are not merely aesthetic. To lose the niu would be to lose the traditions that depend upon it: from carving pahu to braiding ‘aha. In this way, the Royal Grove acts as both a refuge and reminder. The kumu niu, its fronds shifting in the trade winds, was never merely ornamental. It remains a living thread across the fabric of Hawaiian life.

With a reimagined Waikīkī flagship, the House of Mana Up! celebrates Hawai‘i’s makers through an immersive blend of retail and craft.
The House of Mana Up! returns to Royal Hawaiian Center with a spirited new approach. Situated at their original location in Building A, Level 1, the newly renovated space presents a multi-sensory showcase of the islands’ entrepreneurial talent, bringing together more than 70 Hawai‘i-based brands across food, fashion, home, beauty, and wellness.
At its core, the space operates as both storefront and storytelling platform. Products are contextualized through their makers, many of whom have passed through Mana Up’s accelerator program, which has supported over 100 local companies in scaling globally while remaining rooted in Hawai‘i.
The reopening builds on that mission, foregrounding not just goods, but process

and provenance. A floor-to-ceiling installation by local glassmaker Arlie Pemberton greets one upon entering the space, the overhead lights refracting off outsized iterations of her signature glass puakenikeni lei. Across one wall is a mouthwatering array of Mānoa Chocolate’s award-winning products, including their new line of coffee roasted right here on the islands. Then there is, of course, the Kō Hana Rum tasting bar. The bar serves as the centerpiece of the store’s experiential retail approach, unique to its Royal Hawaiian Center location. At the bar, visitors can engage in guided tastings that pair Kō Hana Rum’s selection of agricole rum and cocktails with Mānoa Chocolate’s cacao confections. The result is less a traditional shop than an introduction to Hawai‘i’s most exciting local makers, positioning the islands not just as a place for leisure, but also a wellspring of innovation, craft, and contemporary design.
House of Mana Up! is located on Building A, Level 1.

Growing up, Melin cofounder Brian McDonell was obsessed with baseball caps. Like so many young men, he wore one everywhere. Yet, finding the perfect ball cap always came with growing pains. Just as he settled into a new hat, the silhouette or colorway finally beginning to feel like his own, it began to deteriorate. ”And that would always piss me off because you would have to go back and find the next one, break it in, and find yourself again,” said McDonell in a 2023 interview.
Then, there were the cues of highend style: the way a designer purse could elevate even the simplest outfit, a gesture that felt exclusive to women’s fashion. Sure, historically men had fancy watches, but the accessory was never enough of a bold statement. “To me, a purse and a hat had the same level of visibility in defining your wardrobe,” said McDonell. “But there was no way to stunt with it. So, the idea

disrupt the outdated ball cap industry.

From the outset, they treated the hat with the same rigor and intentionality as any other performance product. Instead of the standard cotton twills that defined most caps, Melin leaned into technical fabrics: antimicrobial linings, moisture-wicking interiors, and materials engineered to resist water, heat, and wear. Construction, too, was reconsidered. Details that had long been overlooked became central points of focus.
Professional athletes quickly took notice. Among Melin’s earliest supporters were skateboarder Ryan Sheckler and NFL linebacker Zac Diles. Their line-up of styles increasingly grew, spanning from microfleece lined baseball caps to water-resistant snapbacks. Meanwhile, understated designs elevated the caps beyond casual wear.
Now, Melin is bringing their celebrated styles to the islands, with their first Hawai‘i flagship at Royal Hawaiian Center. Here, hat obsessives can shop their wide range of silhouettes, including colorways and designs exclusive to Hawai‘i, like a camouflage green Compass Hydro finished with “Aloha, Honolulu.”
Melin is located in Building B, Level 1.

(Hawaiian language)
Brush up on your ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, the islands’ indigenous language, with this helpful guide of Hawaiian words and phrases throughout the issue.
ALI‘I ‘AI MOKU:
A chief who rules over a moku (district). Kākuhihewa, the ali‘i ‘ai moku of O‘ahu, was said to have planted the first coconut trees that became Helumoa.
‘AHA:
Sennit rope typically made from braided coconut husk. It was an integral part of daily life in Hawai‘i, used from lashing together houses to constructing canoes.
ULU NIU:
A coconut grove. Where the Royal Hawaiian Center now stands was once a royal ulu niu named Helumoa.
HELUMOA:
Meaning “chicken scratch,” it is the traditional place name for the wahi pana (sacred place) upon which the Royal Hawaiian Center was built. The name recalls the phantom rooster who appeared before Kākuhihewa and scratched the earth at his feet, marking the spot where the wahi pana’s first coconut tree was planted.
MELE:
A song or chant, most often accompanied by a traditional or modern instrument, such as a pahu hula.
MO‘OLELO:
Legend, tale, myth. One mo‘olelo credits the planting of Helumoa to a phantom rooster that appeared before Kākuhihewa.
PAHU:
A drum carved from treated and seasoned wood, typically coconut. Pahu hula serve as accompanying drums in hula performance, while the larger pahu heiau are reserved exclusively for ceremonial use.
