WORDS OF ALOHA Me ‘oe ka welina o ke aloha

For over 40 years, the Royal Hawaiian Center has remained the gathering place of Waikīkī. Spanning three blocks along the iconic Kalākaua Avenue, our center features an exceptional mix of luxury brands, international dining, and local boutiques, making it Hawai‘i’s premier shopping destination. Here, discover our over 110 shops and 30 restaurants situated within a vibrant, open-air setting that honors the islands’ beauty. The approaching holiday season calls for an air of celebration. Join us in commemorating the festivities with our line-up of events, from our annual tree-lighting ceremony at the heart of the Royal Grove to a multi-day Lunar New Year festival. For an island-style holiday, find stylish inspiration in our latest fashion editorial, which draws the latest luxury styles from houses such as Hermès, Fendi, Valentino, and Saint Laurent (page 26). Or get a look at our favorite trends from this season’s runways, curated specifically for a resortwear flair (page 22). The center stands in the midst of Helumoa, a wahi pana (storied place) steeped in heritage and culture. Here, we honor Helumoa’s history through a suite of enlightening cultural offerings (page 18). Join us at the Royal Grove for a celebration of mele (music) and hula as the sun sets beyond the horizon. Or take lessons on the art of lauhala weaving or lei-making, both free and open to the public. In this issue’s culture story, learn about how our beloved lei-making kumu (teacher), Aunty Macky, was shaped by a life-long love for the craft (page 52). As you wander through our offerings and uncover all that awaits, may you feel why the Royal Hawaiian Center has stood for generations— and will continue to stand—as the heart of Waikīkī, a welcoming oasis where you and your family can return, time and again, to create memories together. He mai!

RESTAURANT SUNTORY | BUILDING B, LEVEL 3

レストラン・サントリー | B館3階

Sukiyaki emerged in Meiji Era Japan as Western culture influenced more beef consumption. Typically, a hot pot of sweet and salty broth sits at the center of a table surrounded by trays of vegetables, tofu, and thinly sliced beef. At Restaurant Suntory, choose between washugyu (a cross breed of Japanese wagyu and American Black Angus beef) or Japanese Miyazai wagyu. Ingredients are simmered, transferred to individual rice bowls and dipped into raw egg before eating.

PF CHANGS | BUILDING A, LEVEL 1

P.F.チャンズ | A館1階

In China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, where chilis, spices, and mushrooms flourish in the muggy subtropical climate, the renowned cuisine is often spicy and fragrant. Suan la tang (hot and sour soup) is a typical dish, showcasing the region’s prized Sichuan peppercorns, a mouth numbing ingredient in the citrus family. PF Chang’s version—made with silken tofu and chicken—is rich, tangy, and spiked with just the right amount of black vinegar.

Dim sum, or “little eats,” has been a Chinese staple for over a thousand years. Although often bitesized, dim sum is not street food. These delicate confections are made by highly skilled pastry cooks and reserved for enjoyment in fine dining establishments such as Tim Ho Wan, known worldwide for Hong Kong-style dim sum. Among our favorites is siu mai, a pork and shrimp steamed dumpling wrapped in paper thin-dough gathered around the sides and left open on top.

ne Friday morning in Waikīkī, Maxeen Lauahi Shea— affectionately known as Aunty Macky—gathers a group of eager haumāna (students) in a quiet secondfloor setting of Royal Hawaiian Center. For nine years, she’s led this complimentary lei-making class, one of the center’s most popular cultural offerings, with all 24 seats quickly claimed each week. Today is no different. The two long tables are filled with a mix of first-timers, from Texas to Japan. Auntie Macky begins the class with a brief history of Helumoa, the land beneath where the center now stands, once entrusted to Princess Bernice Pauahi, great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, and later gifted by her to Kamehameha Schools. At 81,

Auntie Macky is soft-spoken but no less commanding. She continues with a primer on essential terms in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language). Pua, she says, means flower. She enunciates the word, then has the class repeat it, guiding them through its sound and meaning. As the group learns more words, like u‘i (beautiful) and nani (pretty), Auntie Macky passes out woven baskets brimming with orchids, tuberose, and lantern ‘ilima. Some students lift the blooms for a fragrant inhale before arranging them into patterns. Auntie Macky demonstrates the kui method: “You are sewing the flowers,” she says, gently guiding the needle through each flower’s piko (center). Soon, the room settles into a quiet rhythm—just birdsong and mele

Yet, it wasn’t until she joined the Department of Parks and Recreation that her love for lei truly bloomed, thanks to her kumu (teacher) Marie McDonald, a Moloka‘i-born lei expert and celebrated author who had become the islands’ foremost scholar on the craft. “She was just wonderful,” Auntie Macky recalls. “I was so lucky to have learned under her then.” Auntie Macky would later chair the Lei Day festival at Kapi‘olani Park for 15 years, finding joy in honoring lei-making every May Day. After retiring, she continued volunteering at local institutions like the Bishop Museum and the Hawaiian Civic Club. Then, in 2016, she was invited to become a kumu for the center, where she has introduced the craft to hundreds of attendees. “I enjoy lei-making,” she says. “To me, this isn’t work.” As the allotted hour comes to an end, Auntie Macky offers each student a pua kenikeni flower as a parting gift, the fragrant five-petal blooms freshly picked from her backyard trees. Many approach her with an earnest thank you; some shyly ask for a photograph. With their handmade lei hung proudly around their necks, the class leaves with more than just a new skill. They walk away with a piece of Hawaiian culture—the history, language, and craft—that Auntie Macky has so generously imparted.

At Kobe Jewelry, they don’t so much wink at you as throw their arms open wide, demanding you look. Yet nestled alongside the brilliance are pieces far more rooted in place: gem-coated turtles, golden plumeria scrolling thick and luscious across bracelets, and the unmistakable heft of classic Hawaiian heirloom designs. These are jewels that don’t just sparkle; they speak the language of the islands, flora and fauna cast forever in gold. “In a way my dad’s store feels like a time capsule because it hasn’t really changed,” says Sierra Jeong, the storeowner’s daughter. If Kobe is about legacy, a time capsule preserved in gold and scrollwork, then Laki Hawaiian Design is about reinvention. Here, hand-carved bangles meet rich black Tahitian pearls, while patterns inspired by taro leaves, rainforest botanicals, and marine life shimmer across bold rings and pendants. Each piece feels both rooted and refreshing, a modern homage to the islands’ abundance. Curate a stack of necklaces perfect for everyday wear, the perfect souvenir from your time in the islands. Or load up a necklace with a variety of charms for a uniquely maximalist affair. And then there’s Yumi Kim, where jewelry becomes less heirloom and more flirtation: a whisper of gold, the swing of a trendy gem or pearl on a playful hoop, paired with the brand’s signature floral dresses. If Kobe feels like permanence, and Laki like self-definition, Yumi Kim feels like play: the joy of trying on an island identity for a night, of catching yourself in the mirror, and knowing this sparkle is part of your story, too. Four shops, four different moods, four ways of slipping into Hawai‘i’s narrative. Taken together, they make Royal Hawaiian Center more than a shopping destination. It’s a gallery of adornment, where the islands gleam back at you in gold and coral and pearl, each jewel a chance to carry a piece of the place with you.

Carhartt WIP hangs alongside Awake NY, while Northface sits comfortably next to Tori Richard—brands that might seem worlds apart until you see how they’ve been reimagined in Island Snow’s curated space. It’s a far cry from the brand’s earliest days in 1979, when founder James Kodama opened a small shave-ice shop in Kailua that also sold clothing. The frozen treats drew people in, but the heart of the business was always fashion. “The shave ice was more of a gathering place,” says his son, Brockton. “Clothing was always where my dad wanted to be.” By 1981, Island Snow had its first Waikīkī shop, a kiosk tucked under banyan

trees at the International Marketplace. Over the next twenty years, the brand became synonymous with Hawai‘i’s evolving identity—part surf culture, part global street style. Island Snow was among the first to import Patagonia, and later, to champion streetwear labels before they hit the mainstream. “We always had our eyes on Tokyo, New York, LA,” Brockton recalls. “It was about what was new and cool, and bringing that energy back home.” The Waikīkī stores eventually shuttered in the late 2000s, when James considered retirement and his sons seemed destined for other careers. For a brief moment, it looked like Island Snow’s Honolulu chapter had closed. But retail has a way of pulling people back in. Brockton, after a short stint in accounting, realized spreadsheets couldn’t compete with the energy of a clothing floor. “I called my dad and said, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’” says Brockton. Within months, Island Snow was reborn under the next generation’s care. Brockton along with his brother Adam now helm the brand’s creative direction. Reopening in Waikīkī at the Royal Hawaiian Center felt inevitable. Island Snow already had a long-running relationship with Stüssy—operating its Hawai‘i stores for over 30 years—and the appetite for streetwear in Honolulu had

only grown. The new store leans heavily into that identity: Awake, Carhartt WIP, HUF, and Island Snow’s own line anchor the racks, while lifestyle crossovers like North Face and Patagonia blur the lines between function and fashion. That duality has created a broad audience. Customers who lined up for sneakers in the ’90s still stop by in their 40s, while teenagers now discover the same brands for the first time. “We shoot younger, but it’s amazing to see OG customers come back,” says Brockton. Today, Island Snow is both legacy and experiment—a family brand rooted in Hawai‘i’s culture, yet forward-looking enough to keep pace with global fashion. “I go with what I like,” says Brockton. “It’s a family business, but it’s also a reflection of our taste.”
