It is amid a community of like-minded individuals that we often find ourselves pushed to the boundaries of our imaginations, where ideas are nurtured and experimentation blooms. In recent years, this type of collaboration was hampered by global events that pulled many of us into isolation. Now, as we once again find our communities, there comes a wellspring of fresh inspiration. In the following pages, we pay homage to the possibilities afforded by this boundless exchange of ideas, culture, and artistry.

We’re offered a glimpse behind the botanical curtain as the Garden Club of Honolulu returns after a five-year hiatus, bringing back its beloved flower show with a garden spectacle of grand proportion. We meet members of Honolulu’s creative community, whose interior lives are captured in intimate detail by photographer Mark Kushimi. Meanwhile, a writer travels to Japan in search of jazu kissa, Japan’s famed listening bars, and discovers how a mutual love of jazz ushered in a global movement.

This issue, we examine how collaboration begets ingenuity, sometimes across generations, as in the case of locally owned family business Aloha Tofu Factory and heritage jewelry brand HIE Heirlooms of Hawai‘i. As you read these stories, we hope to inspire you to find and nurture your own sense of community—wherever your creative pursuits may lead.

rowing up, both Noël Shaw and Meleana Estes were accustomed to the familiar collection of Hawaiian heritage clang of gold on gold sounding bracelets, two friends hope to from their matriarchs’ wrists, encircled in gold bands engraved revive a tradition that began with Hawaiian words in Old English lettering. Here in the islands, the gifting of Hawaiian gold bracelets is a beloved tradition marking milestones in the recipient’s life.

Estes’ namesake band, originally a gift to her mother in honor of Estes’ birth, became hers upon turning 16.

Two years later, Estes’ tūtū gave her a bracelet to mark her graduation from high school, and then another, one of her tūtū’s own adornments, on Estes’ 30th birthday. “Those are my heirlooms, and I haven’t taken them off since they were gifted to me when I was young,” Estes says.

When Estes and Shaw gave birth to their own children, they were unable to find heritage bracelets that fit their modern aesthetic. At the same time, the two friends noticed the tradition itself was fading, as practical household goods supplanted more sentimental gifts. “We’d seen enough baby showers and bridal showers where there was no heritage jewelry involved in any of the gifting,” Shaw says. “We wanted to change that.”

In 2019, during her search for the perfect Hawaiian bracelet, Shaw studied her family’s heritage jewelry collection and was surprised to find a bangle, dated New Year’s Day, 1881, that had belonged to her great-greatgreat-grandmother Lizzie Nakanealoha, a confidant of Queen Lili‘uokalani. Inspired by their family histories and frustrated with their fruitless search for tasteful solid-gold Hawaiian bracelets, Shaw, an entrepreneur, and Estes, a stylist and lei maker, decided to combine their talents and design their own. Four years later, HIE—meaning “to beautify” in Hawaiian—was born.

HIE is a modern take on a tradition popularized by the fashionable Queen Lili‘uokalani. For decades, the queen’s affinity for gold bracelets engraved with black glass enamel was thought to have begun with a gift she received from Queen Victoria at the British royal’s Golden Jubilee in London in 1887. However, the royal archives

have no record of such a gift, and a photograph of the then-chiefess taken 25 years earlier, in 1862, shows the newly engaged Hawaiian royal wearing at least one engraved gold bangle, thought to be her original Ho‘omana‘o Mau (“Always Remember”) bracelet.

And in 1885, when Lili‘uokalani sat for a portrait in her famous “bird dress,” multiple gold bangles adorned her wrist.

Jeweler Philip Rickard, author of Hawaiian Heirloom Jewelry: A Lasting Remembrance, interprets the text and symbols on the queen’s Ho‘omana‘o Mau bracelet—which includes chevrons, a Masonic compass, the fleur-de-lys, and the kāhili (Hawaiian symbol for royalty)—to mean, “Always remember that guidance from above protects me, and those I protect, by my good judgment and love of perfection, light, and life, for I am royalty.”

This integration of Old English heraldry and Hawaiian words and symbols is indicative of both the reach of Victorian fashion and Hawai‘i’s ties to the British monarchy at the time. After Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died in 1861, the British queen donned black mourning attire, including a gold bracelet engraved with black glass enamel.

Mourning attire and black enamel jewelry became fashionable throughout the Western world, and Lili‘uokalani followed suit.

“A lot of the royals at that time—just look at King Kalākaua—wanted to appear European,” Shaw explains. Traces of that desire are still visible today in what remains of the Hawaiian monarchy: the Old World grandeur of ‘Iolani Palace, the British Empire’s Union Jack on the Hawaiian flag. As the U.S. moved toward annexing Hawai‘i, Lili‘uokalani appealed to the British monarchy for protection, but ultimately Britain did not intervene when Americans usurped her throne.

Shaw and Estes believe Hawaiian heritage jewelry is, in some ways, inexorably tied to the poignant travails of the islands’ last sovereign queen.

One bracelet in the HIE collection is engraved with the words “Ke Aloha O Ka Haku,” or “The Queen’s Prayer,” a hymn Lili‘uokalani wrote while imprisoned at ‘Iolani Palace. In designing the piece, the pair hoped to honor both Lili‘uokalani’s grace and her determination to protect her people and culture.

Recently, Shaw and Estes met with a group from New York who weren’t even aware that Hawai‘i was once a monarchy. Estes explained to them, “Actually, we had a queen, and she was overthrown, and she was the epitome of a matriarch for our culture at that time and has remained that way today.”

Just as Lili‘uokalani added bracelets to her collection throughout her life to mark her personal history, bearing messages ranging from “Ho‘omana‘o Mau” to “Aloha ‘Oe” (“Farewell to Thee”), Shaw and Estes are now doing the same—adding their own solid-gold HIE bangles to their family bands.

“I’m getting noisier and noisier and happier and happier with all my jingle-jangle,” Estes says.

t’s June 2023, and the Honolulu Museum of Art has come alive with a vibrant array of blooms locally beloved, the Garden for the Garden Club of Honolulu’s Club of Honolulu’s botanical triennial flower show. And to mark its return after an unexpected five-year creations are a spectacle of hiatus—a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic—the year’s dazzling displays have been propagated, grand proportion. pruned, and arranged around a surprising theme: the ocean.

“Everyone wonders, ‘What does the ocean have to do with flowers and plants?’” says flower show co-chair Janice Fergus. “Because we’re on an island, everything came over the ocean—on birds, the wind, as seeds for plants.” Case in point: Mounted front and center on the museum’s main stage is one of the show’s pièces de résistance—a traditional sailing canoe nestled among a lush assemblage of staple crops brought to Hawai‘i by its first Polynesian settlers, including mai‘a (banana), kalo (taro), and niu (coconut).

and galleries, the show is a monumental undertaking, and one of only nine of this magnitude organized by members of the Garden Club of America, a nonprofit organization comprised of 200 regional clubs and some 18,000 members around the country. It’s a particularly impressive feat when you consider that the Garden Club of Honolulu runs the event solo. (Other clubs on the U.S. mainland have the ability—that is, the proximity—to partner with neighboring clubs for events.)

The Garden Club of Honolulu has been orchestrating this visual spectacle at the museum since 1931. According to president Kitty Wo, it was the success of that inaugural show, and the impression it left on national judges, that made the club an official member of the larger Garden Club of America organization. Yet it isn’t the prizes, recognition, or even the beauty of the botanical creations themselves so much as the camaraderie among garden club members that has kept the show going strong for nearly a century.

“After the plants go back home, and the flowers die, and the photographs get filed, what you have left is relationships and the friendships you’ve made during this process,” says flower show co-chair Phyllis Lee. “I believe [the show] strengthens our club in a way that no other project can. We have common interests to start with, but when you work on something like this, it just brings you closer.”

The flower show is the group’s most high-profile endeavor, but as one of the national organization’s

largest and most active clubs, it’s far from the Garden Club of Honolulu’s only initiative in plant education, conservation, horticulture, and botanical artistry. Other programs include monthly flower-arranging classes for inmates at the state’s only women’s prison, fundraising efforts for projects at local community gardens, and public classes on flower arranging, basket weaving, and plant education at Lyon Arboretum in Mānoa Valley. Members also tend to an area of Foster Botanical Garden that’s been in their stewardship for more than a decade. “All of these things help us prepare for the next show, in a way,” Fergus says.

“It’s a learning process that never ends. And I think all of us are always curious, always wanting to learn something new.”

espite its location just minutes from the urban density of Honolulu, the stretch of the Ko‘olau Range known as Tantalus somehow seems to inhabit a world of its own. As one ascends along its winding road, the air noticeably cools; at night, a dense fog descends down through the trees. As hikers, mountain bikers, and daytrippers make their way home, wary of traversing its hairpin turns in the dark, Tantalus is left for those who live there.

Interior designer Ginger Lunt is one such resident.

Though much of her family—Mormons from Utah who settled in Hawai‘i in the 1850s—has called Lā‘ie home for generations, Lunt’s parents bought and relocated to a property on the upper reaches of Tantalus Drive

when she was 12 years old. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the mountain and being surrounded by the forest,” she says. “All of its sounds, layers of green, and scents of flowers and eucalyptus.” For Lunt, Tantalus remains a calming oasis away from the crowded concrete jungle of Honolulu.

I’ve joined her on the mountain, making the 15-minute-or-so drive up from Makiki, many times in the past several years to document her and her fellow Tantalus residents. In a quest to tell their stories before some of them are no longer here to do so themselves, Lunt asked me to photograph the many remarkable houses in the neighborhood, and the equally remarkable characters who reside in them, in hopes of compiling the images into a book.

“My passion for architecture and design, paired with my connection to the Tantalus community and deep love for this forest, is what inspired me to work on this project,” Lunt says. “There is such an authentic quality to the people and the homes that are up on this hill.

There are homes built humbly and lovingly by their owners alongside homes created by well-known architects, all deeply inspired by the surrounding natural environs in different ways.”

Today, Lunt lives in a property just two houses down from her childhood home. It also serves as headquarters of her interior design firm, Tantalus Studio, affectionately named after the mountain on which it resides. Behind a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it wooden gate camouflaged by foliage, the elegant twostory house stands with simple bones and an open, welcoming façade that was originally designed in 1954. Thin support beams uphold a wrap-around lānai, framing an original lava-rock chimney and pouredconcrete entryway. Inside, koa wood floors, board-andbatten paneling, and built-in millwork were restored to their original glory in 2018 by Lunt and a team of local craftsmen. “It has a lot of classic 20th-century Hawai‘i design elements,” Lunt says. “Luckily almost all of the house was still original and had never been changed, which I love.”

Resident Kim Coffee-Isaak echoes the sentiment.

The active Tantalus Community Association member says the drive up the mountain is often polarizing for visitors. “When they get out of their car, they say, ‘Oh my god, that drive is so cool. It’s so beautiful.

We just love it up here.’ Or, they get out of their car and say, ‘Oh my god, how do you do that drive every day?’”

Over the years, the mountainside enclave has been home to artists and intellectuals, architects and hermits—a down-to-earth bunch with a mutual appetite for nature and serenity. But as it turns out, a neighborhood defined by its mystery and isolation also tends to attract people who value their privacy, making the book project a challenging undertaking.

Thankfully, having grown up on the mountain, Lunt is friendly with the many families she passes on her evening walks on the hill. Some, she’s known since childhood. In her company, old-timers open up about childhood memories of their own, like sliding down the steep hills on ti leaves and the firecracker battles between gangs of Tantalus kids who claimed the forest as their own. Former resident Joan White fondly recalls a set of stairs at the bottom of the mountain, where, for decades, neighborhood children could sit and wait for a ride up the hill from anyone with a Tantalus sticker on their car.

There were also the “great guava wars.” “When we were kids, we would colonize a guava tree somewhere and then sort of make a village in it,” Gill remembers.

When the fruits ripened, he and his friends would pick guava and haul them home in gallon-sized Folgers Coffee cans to his mother, the neighborhood’s de facto jelly maker. “My mom would spend the week making guava jelly and pass it around the neighborhood,” Gill says. “The whole valley smelled of guava jelly.”

Despite their shared appreciation for privacy, Tantalus residents maintain a strong sense of community. “They’ll really watch out for you,” White says. “They’ll help you out.” These are the stories of the community that Lunt and I hope to capture, from the mundane evening walks and chitchat about about the deplorable state of the road, to the neighborhood holiday celebrations and remarkable moments of aiding another in peril.

In peering into the hidden homes on the hill, we aim to shine a light on the lives lived within their walls.

decade ago, when Josiah Patterson rediscovered his love for photography after a multi-year hiatus, his hometown of Mākaha proved a convenient muse. Elsewhere on the island, O‘ahu’s oceanside vistas are obscured by endless crowds. Here, Patterson’s wife and daughter—his other muses—are often the only figures in the frame.

In the many sprawling scenes of sand and surf he would go on to capture over the years, it’s clear that Patterson sees the west side’s liminal landscapes with a certain reverence—drawn, still, to its churning waves and limitless blue skies, the imposing silhouette of Mount Ka‘ala, O‘ahu’s tallest peak, ever-present overhead.

No, it is the memory of my father at the piano, my mother queuing up LPs at home, and them singing duets while Dad jams a jazz riff, sipping two fingers of scotch.

I have them to thank for my lifelong fascination with jazz and blues.

1920s by way of luxury ocean liners traveling between the U.S. West Coast and Asia. Passengers and cruiseship entertainers alike—including Japanese musicians returning from the U.S. and Filipino jazz bands who mastered the music under American occupation— would disembark in cities such as Osaka and Kobe, transforming establishments into gathering places for a burgeoning jazz community.

Japanese jazz lovers began bringing albums back with them from America and opening kissaten, or coffee shops, devoted to playing recorded jazz imports on quality sound systems. During World War II, these jazu kissa, or jazz cafés, proliferated throughout Japan and became hubs of counterculture and pro-democracy ideas.

Post-war, when foreign records were unaffordable for most fans to import, jazz venues soared in popularity.

Local musicians came to study the form, seeking out hard-to-find editions among café owners’ robust record collections. Meanwhile, a surge in international travel brought a steady stream of touring American jazz musicians; today their visits are memorialized in signed record albums and photos displayed on the walls of jazz establishments throughout Japan. By the ’70s, Japan was home to as many as 600 jazu kissa, including newer, more modern establishments that stayed open later, served alcohol, and featured high-end sound systems.

On a recent trip to Japan, I went searching for these kissa, starting with Bar Martha, a modern kissa in Tokyo.

I found it in a dark alley among shuttered windows and

rusty garage doors. A tiny light illuminated a lone sign hanging above the kissa’s entrance, barely big enough to read: “Bar.” Inside, a man in a Sublime T-shirt and a long, pencil-straight ponytail pointed to a plaque explaining the house rules: “No photos. No talking.”

The bar was cavernous and bathed in amber light, with windowless walls of exposed brick and polished wood. In the far corner stood two rows of turntables with small desk lamps illuminating each deck. The surrounding shelves were lined with thousands of records. While this collection would be noteworthy elsewhere, regulars don’t bat an eye.

Some kissa boast more than 10,000 records.

“Stormy Weather,” a ’30s torch song covered widely by jazz greats like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, played over the bar’s giant Tannoy speakers, which stood level with the spirits gleaming on the top shelf. Men in black suits sat quietly sipping highballs.

Others wordlessly smoked cigars and drank whisky poured over giant spheres of ice. I imagine this kind of attentive listening was how my dad taught himself to play the piano growing up in New York, in the heyday of jazz and blues.

Visiting JBS Bar, one of the older kissa in Tokyo, was a different experience, although it, too, was tricky to find. On the third floor of a nondescript building

on a quiet Shibuya street, a rolling door concealed an entryway bearing the letters “JBS.” The tiny, brightly lit space inside had three tables and a handful of seats at the bar. In contrast to dark and sultry Bar Martha, this had a welcome-to-my-living-room vibe, but the owner, an older gentleman with a bald head and black-rimmed glasses, had no desire to chat. Drink offerings were basic: beers and highballs. Like Bar Martha, photos are prohibited.

In the last decade, jazu kissa have spread beyond Japan. Music lovers, inspired by their experiences in the country, are opening their own versions back home. But even as these Japanese-style “listening bars” gain global popularity, jazu kissa are disappearing in their home country. About 100 have closed over the past 50 years.

Owners retire or pass away; younger generations flock to cocktail bars and live music venues.

Still, they’re there if you know where to look, and nowhere does jazu kissa like Japan. At listening bars in America, the playlists are solid and the sound is crisp, but guests listen passively, more concerned with selfies and socializing. In Japan, a relentless attention to detail and strict rules help keep jazu kissa culture alive, if only for the die-hard few who continue to hold it in high regard.

ome of Paul Uyehara’s earliest memories are of his grandmother grabbing aburage, heart, Aloha Tofu Factory or deep-fried tofu, straight from the rises from humble origins frying machine. provide for their family. Uyehara promised himself that if no one else in his generation stepped in to take over the business, he would. After a stint teaching English in Asia, he returned to Hawai‘i to help out at the factory and eventually took the reins as president in 2004.

Today the company is the largest tofu manufacturer in the islands, producing up to 5,000 blocks of firm, soft, and aburage tofu in its 25,000-square-foot factory on any given day.

And it’s all still made using old-fashioned, laborintensive production methods that give the tofu its silky texture and fresh taste. Other soy products are produced here too, including smooth, creamy soy milk and natto fermented for more than 20 hours to yield a subtle flavor.

On days when production is in full swing, the factory is abuzz with workers mixing giant vats of milky white soybean curds and slicing massive slabs of tofu in smooth, swift strokes. Rectangles of firm tofu bob along the surface of long, shallow cooling tanks like buoys, waiting to be packaged. Then there’s the enticing scent of fried tofu, stirring the appetite.

Free of preservatives, the company’s tofu is made with a short list of ingredients: water, soybeans, gypsum, and nigari, a coagulant it sources locally from a salt farm, Kona Sea Salt, on Hawai‘i Island.

However, that isn’t the only local ingredient at the heart of Aloha Tofu’s ongoing success. Through the

years, Aloha Tofu has stood an enduring tale of community, with a state-wide network of restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels that choose to purchase from the small, locally owned business. Families, too, swing by the factory—located off a narrow, unassuming side street in Kalihi— for their fix of the company’s fresh, locally made tofu; some have been placing weekly orders for generations.

While many Hawai‘i businesses suffered devastating economic losses from the COVID-19 pandemic, Aloha Tofu’s sales dropped just 8 percent, something Uyehara attributes to its loyal customers, distributors, and partners. “The thing I like about Hawai‘i people is they try to support each other,” he says. “My suppliers said, ‘If you’re late [paying] me, that’s fine, we can figure it out.’”

When a fire wiped out the original factory in the mid-1960s, fellow Okinawan-owned tofu maker A‘ala Tofu allowed Uyehara’s grandfather to use its factory until Aloha Tofu got back on its feet.

Without that act of goodwill, Uyehara believes Aloha Tofu wouldn’t have survived. “It was another amazing example of community,” he says.

Although his sons aren’t interested in joining the family business, Uyehara knows that won’t be the end of Aloha Tofu. “We’ve been part of the community for 75 years,” he says, and regardless of who carries that legacy forward, “we think it’s important to continue to have a fresh product manufactured in Hawai‘i.”
