As one of the islands’ oldest beacons, Barbers Point Lighthouse has weathered the shifting tides of Hawai‘i’s history.

Along Kalaeloa Boulevard, past the industrial baseyards filled with shipping containers and cement trucks and construction cranes, there is a narrow strip of coast. Barely a beach, it is a landscape of overgrown naupaka, a native shrub, and exposed reefs relentlessly pummeled by the rolling waves.

It is here, on the rugged limestone shores of Kalaeloa on O‘ahu’s southwestern tip, that the historic Barbers Point Lighthouse has stood sentinel since 1888.

In October 1796 the English brig Arthur, enroute to China with a load of sea otter pelts, struck the coral shoals at Kalaeloa.

The ship was destroyed and six of the 22 crewmen drowned—the first recorded fatal wreck of a European vessel in Hawai‘i. The area would be named Barbers Point after Capt. Henry Barber, who had helmed the ill-fated ship.

approved plans for a lighthouse. It took eight years to secure the funds—about $2,800 for a 42-foot concrete tower— and construct the lighthouse. For over 50 years, it was the tallest lighthouse in the islands, until it was surpassed by the 420-foot Makapu‘u Lighthouse in 1909. By 1930, it was showing signs of deterioration, and a new 72-foot tower was built three years later, equipped with a 700,000 candlepower light visible 15 miles at sea.

On the morning of the attack on Pearl Harbor, aerial combat between Japanese and U.S. fighter pilots erupted in the skies above the lighthouse. Keeper John M. Sweeney observed the action from his post. “Two parachutists were dropped close to the station; they were confused in the [kiawe] trees and prowled around the station all Sunday night,” he later wrote. The Army would commandeer

the lighthouse, installing machine gun emplacements inside. A decade later, with the fog of war lifted, the same spiral staircase welcomed trick-or-treating kids, ascending the lighthouse to receive candy from a “ghost” in the lantern room.

The lighthouse was automated in 1964, ending the long lineage of keepers. Today, its operation and maintenance is overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard, one of the 15 Hawai‘i lighthouses under its care. The lantern room and Fresnel lens have been removed and donated to the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon, where they remain on display. The surrounding area has seen its fair share of changes, too. The old sugarcane fields that once surrounded the lighthouse have been replaced with golf courses and strip malls.

As part of the yearlong arcade venture Arcademy, Corvid Academy students get a true taste of entrepreneurship in action.

As 2023 was coming to a close, vice principal Noah Borgia and his fellow faculty members were brainstorming ways to broaden Corvid Academy’s identity beyond its strong academic record. Too small for a traditional sports program, the Kapolei private school needed a unique draw that would enhance the student experience without requiring a lot of space or funding.

Around the same time, the educators had zeroed in on an essential aspect of workplace readiness that they felt was missing from the current curriculum—how to launch and run a business.

Borgia came up with a novel idea that would check both boxes: a work-based learning program designed around a functioning arcade. A longtime collector of classic arcade games, he offered to jumpstart the school’s foray into applied entrepreneurship by donating 10 machines, including Street

On the hillside peaks of Pu‘u Mā‘ili‘ili, among the medical buildings of the Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, lies a sanctuary of ancient wisdom. Here, at the Dr. Agnes Kalaniho‘okaha Cope Traditional Hawaiian Healing Center, skilled practitioners of Hawaiian healing arts nurture the community while passing their ‘ike (knowledge) on to others.

Opened in 2009, the center is named after the late “Aunty Aggie,” as she was affectionately known. Hawaiian tradition, states the center’s administrator, Juanita “Aunty Nalani” Benioni, stressing the importance of self-empowerment in addressing health. “We believe that in traditional Native Hawaiian healing,” she says, “the individual has to choose this route, this path, and needs to make the walk.”

The center offers three primary therapies: lomilomi (Hawaiian massage therapy), lā‘au lapa‘au (plant medicine), and ho‘oponopono (conflict resolution). A form of talk therapy, ho‘oponopono emphasizes forgiveness, effectively bringing people together who have become estranged. Benioni,

I’ve seen it work,” she says. Her goal in teaching ho‘oponopono techniques to others is to foster its positive, cascading effects. “They can take care of family issues before it gets to a practitioner here at the Healing Center.”

Lomilomi, the center’s most popular service, is not simply a massage.

Administered by licensed massage therapists trained specifically in the art of the healing touch, it addresses the body’s physical ailments, such as sprains or chronic pain, but also realigns the body spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Patients are encouraged to talk and let out their feelings. “They start to share things that they have never shared before, getting deep and then expressing it,” says Kaliko Chang, a lomilomi practitioner

In some cases, lomilomi crosses over into the practice of lā‘au lapa‘au, incorporating medicinal ointments and salves that can be used for a physical ailment. Practitioners teach patients how to craft traditional medicine through demonstration so that they can bring those skills back home.

Many lā‘au lapa‘au consultations, however, are conducted by phone.

“Most of our patients come from traditions of maybe a grandmother or aunty in their family who practiced traditionally, but they may be no longer here or the practice may be not completely remembered,” Benioni says.

“So, they’ll call and say, ‘I remember my kupuna asking us to eat the pōpolo berries. Do you know how many we’re supposed to eat?’” The Healing Center then shares its ‘ike on the subject during the call.

One particular walking trail called the Lā‘au Trail features additional healing plants such as lā‘ī (ti leaf ), kukui (candlenut), niu (coconut), awapuhi (ginger), and ‘ōlena (turmeric).

Benioni notes that while there isn’t enough scientific evidence to confirm lā‘au lapa‘au’s efficacy by Western medicine standards, the practice is rooted in centuries of ancestral knowledge. “We don’t say that any of our lā‘au cure anything. We just tell [patients] that, traditionally, this is what was used,” Benioni says, adding, “We believe these herbs are given to us by a greater power.”

The Healing Center is overseen by a Kūpuna Council, a council of elders who are master practitioners. They are responsible for ensuring that all practitioners are experts in their fields and that cultural knowledge is practiced and passed down correctly.

“The number one priority is to preserve what is left of traditional medicine and practice while the elders are still alive,” says Kamaki Kanahele, director of the Kūpuna Council and son of Aunty Aggie. He recalls how diligently his mom worked to secure the land and gather funds for the Healing Center.

by Cope, the Healing Center has had a profound impact on the immediate community. Since its opening 16 years ago, it has touched thousands of lives, spreading awareness of traditional healing practices while helping the community. “I hope to perpetuate the knowledge that [the Kūpuna Council] have shared over the many, many, many years to the next generation,” Chang says.

Kāneana has many stories to tell.

According to legend, the 100-foottall, 450-foot-deep cave named for Kāne, the Hawaiian god of creation, is where humankind first emerged from the womb of the earth goddess Haumea. Later, Nanaue, a half-shark, half-human shapeshifter, lured his victims into Kāneana, where he would devour them in the cave’s deepest, darkest corners. The demigod Māui is said to have resided there along with his grandmother. Another part-time resident of the cave was Haumea’s hotheaded daughter, the fire goddess Pele. But Kāneana has another story to tell, this one encoded in its rocks and being slowly retold, not in the language of myth and legend, but of science.

John Sinton and Deborah Eason are among those researchers telling Kāneana’s geological story—a story carved out of the mountainside by hundreds of thousands of years of pounding surf, exposed in the dike rock for scientists to read. According to Sinton, Kāneana’s dike complex indicates that this area was once a major eruption center for the Wai‘anae volcano, which rose from the ocean about 4 million years ago and stretched from Kāneana to Kapolei nearly 20 miles away. “What’s unusual about Kāneana is that its dikes run so

What’s also unusual is that the pattern seems isolated: “Further south in Nānākuli,” which was another eruption center, “the dikes have a radial orientation; they run all over the place.

For 25 years we’ve wondered: Why is Wai‘anae volcano so different from one end to the other?”

To understand why that question is important, you need to know a little about how the Hawaiian Islands—and O‘ahu in particular—formed. All of Hawai‘i’s islands were born from the same “hot spot,” a place where magma rises from the core to the surface of the Earth. As the Earth’s crust moves— in the case of Hawai‘i, the Pacific Plate, which is drifting to the northwest at a rate of 5 to 10 centimeters a year—new volcanoes punch through the crust and create islands. Volcanic activity ebbs the farther an island drifts from the hot spot. As it moves away, the volcano erodes, with parts of it falling into the sea. The farther southeast along the Hawaiian chain one goes, the younger the volcanoes are. The Hawaiian hot spot forms shield volcanoes, which have gently sloping flanks like those you can see on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island today. At one point in history, it was believed, O‘ahu had two such

shield volcanoes: the Wai‘anae (3 to 4 million years old) and the Ko‘olau (2 to 3 million years old).

Today the remnants of those volcanoes can be seen in the jagged profiles of the Wai‘anae and Ko‘olau mountains, with the broad saddle of Wahiawā between them.

That seems like a fairly straightforward creation story: Two volcanoes formed one after the other as the plate moved over the hot spot and remained connected. But as the features in Kāneana suggest, the story couldn’t be that straightforward. Sinton, who has been studying Wai‘anae volcano since 1979, was baffled by several nagging mysteries surrounding the leeward coast’s geology. In 2010, for example, researchers found lava in Wai‘anae valley that had a different chemical composition from the surrounding lava. It seemed to have come from nowhere, as if dropped from the sky or spit up from a deeper region of the Earth. “This unusual lava flow presented us with a real enigma,” Sinton says. “We know the lava reflects melting of the deep crust underneath the Wai‘anae volcano, but why is the chemical composition so different?”

Then there’s the question of leeward O‘ahu’s puzzling topography: The dry leeward side is where you find O‘ahu’s

largest valleys, but this is an anomaly, Sinton says. Big valleys usually result from erosion, and in Hawai‘i they are usually found on the windward sides of islands, where rain falls, water flows, and winds rage. Scientists had long surmised that leeward O‘ahu’s expansive valleys, such as those found in Wai‘anae and Nānākuli, were the result of catastrophic landslides. But what could have caused them?

Sinton, an emeritus professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, and Eason, a postdoctoral researcher at UH Mānoa at the time, along with researchers from France’s Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, published a paper in 2013 that answers these and other questions. Using sophisticated underwater mapping technologies and extensive geological sampling of the ocean floor, the team confirmed the existence of a third O‘ahu volcano, one that predated the Wai‘anae volcano by about 1 million years and Ko‘olau by approximately 2 million; both the Wai‘anae and Ko‘olau volcanoes formed on its flanks. This thinking, of course, reflected the fact that we didn’t have very good maps of the offshore region,” Sinton says. “We basically had only the islands to work with. As the data came in, we would look at these new maps and think, ‘Whoa, that doesn’t look right,’ but we had nothing that could confirm our suspicions.”

The existence of this older submarine volcano explains the leeward coast’s geological mysteries. For instance, as Wai‘anae volcano erupted, it ran headlong into Ka‘ena, which likely forced the younger volcano’s dikes into straight lines. The leeward coast’s

landslide activity can also be partially explained: According to Sinton, it’s common for volcanoes built on the flank of precursor volcanoes to collapse. Hawai‘i Island’s Kīlauea, which is currently “failing,” pouring its lava south, sits on the southeast flank of Mauna Loa. For Wai‘anae, most of its landslide activity occurred on the southwestern side, falling away from Ka‘ena. And those unusual rocks in Wai‘anae? It turns out that they didn’t appear out of nowhere; they share the same chemistry as the undersea rocks sampled from Ka‘ena.

But for Sinton, the discovery of a new volcano raises as many questions as it answers. For instance, it appears that Ka‘ena had an unusually prolonged history as a submarine volcano, only breaching the ocean surface late in its history. Once above water, the volcano stood about 3,000 feet above sea level—about the same height as Lāna‘i stands today—before it subsided into the ocean. Sinton estimates that Ka‘ena broke the surface about 3.5 million years ago, but when did it re-submerge and why? “We’ve only excavated and mapped a fraction of the area, just scratched the surface,” Sinton says.

“There are other things that we want to know about Ka‘ena volcano.”

For someone whose research has overturned long-held theories about O‘ahu’s geology, Sinton is circumspect, hesitant to use the word “discovery” to describe his team’s findings. To him it seems more like a confirmation.

He says that the leeward coast is a geologist’s dream: Ancient landslides exposed a million years of volcanic history, stacked layer upon layer like an enormous wedding cake. The arid conditions ensured that the rock remained beautifully exposed and accessible. Sinton recalls that as a young researcher he would trek throughout the area, often hiking Wai‘anae’s 4,000-foot Mount Ka‘ala and collecting reams of data along the way. In hindsight he wonders why it took him so long to theorize that there might be a third volcano somewhere under the sea.

“Ko‘olau is wetter, steeper, and more dangerous because the rock is weathered and brittle. Wai‘anae, on the other hand, is a beautiful place to work. As a result, it’s one of the bestmapped volcanoes in the Hawaiian chain,” Sinton says. “So maybe I should have been thinking more about the offshore regions. However, like most people, when I looked out at Ka‘ena Point, all I saw was a beautiful ocean.”

Wai‘anae’s fishing tradition lives on through the local fishermen who continue to cast a line along its storied coast.

Much like other coastal communities throughout Hawai‘i, Wai‘anae boasts a rich fishing tradition that stretches back to the time of the first Polynesian settlers. The name Wai‘anae—“waters of the mullet”—carries that memory: a time when the mullet were plentiful, gathering along this coast to mature before migrating to deeper waters to spawn and begin the cycle anew.

In those years, Wai‘anae’s streams ran steadily to the sea, nurturing fishing grounds that were unmatched anywhere on O‘ahu.

Today, many who live in Wai‘anae still fish not for sport, but to feed their families and, when the catch is plentiful, the community as well. You often see them as you drive down Farrington Highway, silhouetted figures up and down the coast. They stake their spots along sandy dunes and craggy reefs, hoping to be blessed by Wai‘anae’s bountiful waters, just like the centuries of fishermen who came before. Here, the ways of nā lawai‘a (fishermen) live on: in the salt-stiff lines coiled at dusk, in the stories traded over buckets of ‘ōpelu and akule, in the meditative solitude of a line cast along the shore.

In Wai‘anae, the restoration of a storied heiau has been generations in the making.

There is an old heiau at the precipice of a short-spurred peninsula along the Wai‘anae coast. Named Kū‘īlioloa, it rises more than 10 feet high, a tiered structure of lava rocks and boulders, some stones dating back centuries. California grass grows wild and tawny along its edges, and the ocean, which hems it in on three sides, is an unceasing surf against the basalt below. Climbing to the top, you meet the Pacific’s sheer immensity, a cerulean sweep that seems to run on forever. Standing at the heiau’s westernmost tip feels like standing at the end of the world.

It is said that Kamehameha I lingered here in 1795, shortly after the Battle of Nu‘uanu, before later setting sail for Kaua‘i to complete his unification of the islands, his place in history as the kingdom’s first ruler just over the horizon. Another, older story tells how the chief Lonokaeho sailed from Ra‘iātea bearing stones from Marae Taputapuātea, a Tahitian temple considered the ancestral homeland of Polynesia. After placing them at a temple on O‘ahu’s North Shore, he sailed south, pausing at Mauna Lahilahi, where he saw Kāne‘īlio Point jutting from Pōka‘i Bay. He returned north, gathered the stones, and laid

Some set up fishing poles along the point’s rough-hewn isthmus, Jawaiian music blaring from their speakers as they chat loudly in the heiau’s shadow.

Even those who make their way to the top venture there without realizing the gravity of the place, like the young couple from Utah I witness get engaged along its terraces. When I ask later if they knew this was a heiau, the newly minted fiancé replies, “What’s that?”

••• I meet William Aila Jr. one sweltering Sunday at the structure’s outskirts as he waters the native naupaka shrubs growing steadily among the boulders.

His faded blue shirt reads “Mālama Mākua,” a nod to the ongoing Native Hawaiian movement to protect Mākua Valley, a sacred site further up the Wai‘anae coast.

while technically the government’s responsibility, has fallen to Wai‘anae residents like Aila, who have stepped in amid budget shortfalls and a lack of protections specific to the site. “‘Āina needs to be cared for, no different than a human being,” he says. “People need to care for ‘āina, then ‘āina will care for people.”

Aila and his wife have been coming to the heiau every Sunday for nearly 15 years, tending to native plants, clearing rubbish left by visitors, and, occasionally, resetting stones that have shifted with time. It’s been hard going. Often, houseless will camp atop the heiau, forcing Aila and other community members to usher them off the property. Once, an individual let their unleashed dogs roam the grounds, and they proceeded to mangle all 14 of the native ua‘u kani (wedge-tailed shearwater birds) nesting within the heiau walls.

adopted the new faith and, urged by the missionaries, ordered heiau to be destroyed. For over a century, Kū‘īlioloa lay neglected. Then came the attack on Pearl Harbor, and with it, the U.S. military’s occupation of Kāne‘īlio Point and the heiau itself. They built a communications tower at its apex, remnants of which are still visible in the concrete trestles that punctuate the peninsula’s rock-strewn shoreline. One terrace, believed to have been a house site, was bulldozed and paved over with concrete. Many others were demolished, rendering Kū‘īlioloa unrecognizable.

The land was returned to the then Territory of Hawai‘i in 1956, after which it continued to be neglected.

By the time aloha ‘āina activist Fred Keakaokalani Cachola visited the site in the early ’70s, the heiau was reduced to a haphazard pile of stones, halfswallowed by kiawe trees. A native of Kōhala on Hawai‘i Island, Cachola had helped restore Kōhala’s sacred spaces, including Kamehameha’s birthsite at Kokoiki. When he later settled in Wai‘anae, the first thing he asked its kūpuna (elders) was where their wahi pana—their legendary places—could be found. “They tell him about a few, but they were also the generation of ‘no touch,’” Aila recalls, referring to the century of cultural repression that

took hold after the missionaries rose to influence in the 19th century.

Cachola managed to find Kū‘īlioloa, bringing along Marion Kelly, the Bishop Museum ethno-historian whose work is credited with salvaging many of Hawai‘i’s sacred sites. Over the next two decades, Cachola, with the support of the museum and the Wai‘anae Hawaiian Civic Club, raised the heiau from ruin, their work unfolding alongside the second Hawaiian Renaissance, a renewed awakening of Hawaiian culture, language, and history. In 1976, after completing its maiden voyage to Tahiti and back, the Polynesian canoe Hōkūle‘a was moored at Kū‘īlioloa. After school, students from nearby Mākaha and Nānākuli would gather along the heiau’s newly rebuilt terraces, its ancient role as a center for navigation restored at last.

Without the city’s support, though, the Wai‘anae community could only do so much. For decades after its restoration, Cachola, and later Aila, alongside organizations like the civic club and the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, labored to keep the heiau intact. Workdays were held to reset the shifting stones.

Native plants razed in a brush fire were replanted. Still, their resources weren’t enough to stave off the illegal

encampments and criminal activities that plagued the site.

“Growing up in Wai‘anae, I was like, there’s so many people taking care of the heiau. Why is it still this way?” says Joseph K. Simpliano, who in 2020 co-founded the Hawaiian-led nonprofit Kingdom Pathways with his wife, Carmen. Years earlier, he had been a soldier in Afghanistan returning to his native Wai‘anae for a brief leave. Seeing the abandoned cars and trash along the coastline, he says, it felt as if he’d never left the warzone. Then he learned of the heiau, its grounds overtaken by drug

activity and petty crime. Shortly after retiring from the military in 2017, he joined the neighborhood board, taking the Parks & Recreation chair expressly to advocate for Kū‘īlioloa.

He quickly ran into bureaucratic red tape that stalled any effort to move forward. “I noticed that no matter how hard he tried as chair, there was a lot of pushback,” Carmen says. She encouraged him to step down, and together, they founded Kingdom Pathways to pursue the changes Joseph couldn’t achieve from within.

Joseph’s time on the neighborhood board gave him insight into the government machinery, while Carmen’s work as a paralegal helped them uncover documents affirming the heiau’s significance. In 2021, they called a meeting with the city’s park director.

After the meeting, Carmen wrote a flurry of resolutions for the heiau, working with agencies to see them passed. One brought new signage at the entrance, identifying the site and its sacred status. Another shortened surrounding beach park hours—moving its closure from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m.— curbing much of the long-standing illicit behavior. Still, the work is far from finished. In progress is an ordinance prohibiting certain uses of the heiau grounds, including camping. The other thing that’s made a difference? Securing the release of funds long allocated for Wai‘anae but were left unused in the city’s budget since the 2000s.

“Tell me one other heiau that has these problems,” Carmen says. “I think that really hammers it home, right? But there are solutions. It may take a couple of years, but it can be done.”

I started going to the Nānākuli Boys and Girls Club when I was 6 years old—the clubhouse is a crosswalk away from my grade school, Nānāikapono Elementary. It was one of their bring-a-friend days, where you can experience the Club for a day without being a member, so I went with my friend Kalias to their afterschool program called A-plus.

I remember it was very loud and very intimidating. There were these two big blue doors that looked about 10 feet tall—like they were going to swallow me whole. But the staff welcomed me with open arms, and I ended up having the best hour of my life. Ever since that day, the Club has been my life.

The staff has helped me continue to grow, and they just want to see me succeed. All of the kids who come here have struggles, and we’ve been going through it lately. But we’re surrounded by a whole village. They

とても騒々しくて、なんだか怖いところだなと思いました。 3メートルはありそうな大きな青いドアが二つあって、飲み 込まれてしまいそうでした。 でも、 スタッフの人たちはあた たかく迎えてくれて、結局それまでの人生でいちばん楽し いひとときを過ごしました。 それ以来、 クラブが大好きにな ったんです。

see all the potential you have, and they bring it out in you. They’re the family when you don’t have a family.

Boys and Girls Club has so many programs, and I love them all. There’s Money Matters, where they teach you about finances and how to budget. Kids Cooking Local, where you can learn to cook. Project Alert, which is all about saying no to drugs and peer pressure.

But the ones that are at the root of who I am are the leadership programs—Torch Club for ages 7 to 12, and Leaders in Training for teens. They’ve grounded me in responsibility and being a role model, and they taught me to put actions where my words are. I’m learning how to be a valuable asset to not only myself but to my peers and, in the near future, to my country.

I also really love community service. One year we did a beach cleanup at Ma‘ili Beach. All of the Nānākuli Club kids came together to dig up this big glass bottle that was buried deep in the sand. Bonding over picking up trash and getting that glass bottle out was something that really touched me. I helped make the beach a safer place, but I also made a deep connection with these people.

Winning Youth of the Year is definitely an accomplishment. It took a lot of brain power, a lot of support, and a lot of tears to get to this point. It’s something I’m most definitely proud of, but the best part of the experience is making my Club proud.

でも、今のわたしの土台となっているのはリーダーシップ・プ ログラムですね。7歳から12歳の児童対象の〈トーチ・クラ ブ〉 とティーンエイジャーが対象の 〈リーダーズ・イン・トレー ニング〉。 こうしたプログラムで責任感を叩き込まれました し、 つねに人のお手本となること、有言実行の精神もここで 身につけました。 自分にとってだけでなく、仲間にとっても、 そ して近い将来は祖国にとっても価値のある存在でいるため にはどうしたらいいかを学んでいます。

わたしは地域に貢献するのも大好きです。 マイリ・ビーチの 清掃をした年がありました。 ナナクリ・クラブの子供たちみん なが参加して、砂に深々と埋まっていた大きな瓶を掘り起こ しました。 みんなでゴミを拾ったり瓶を取り除いたりしなが ら友達との絆が深まっていくことに心から感動しました。清 掃に参加したおかげでビーチは前より安全な場所になり、友 達と前よりずっと仲よくなれたんです。

The Club has really influenced me to be who I am and to Kūlia i Ka Nu‘u, which is also the motto at my school, Nānākuli High School: “We Seek the Highest.” I used to be this little shy girl—never like talk to anybody—but now I’m not scared to be my loud, funny, extroverted self. I love who I am, and the Club has taught me to embrace that. I take the inspiration that I get from the Club and I use it to inspire my classmates.

Next year, I’ll be going to UH Mānoa [University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa]. I plan on majoring in biology and taking pre-med courses, so I can enroll in medical school and become a travel anesthesiologist. I dream big, and I know many other kids from my community dream big, too.

目で、外向的な自分でいることが怖いと思いません。 自分が 大好きですし、 クラブはその気持ちを大切にしろと教えてく れました。 クラブからインスピレーションを受けたわたしが、 クラスメートたちにインスピレーションを与えられたらいい なと思います。

After I graduate, I see myself still being in the Club, volunteering with Youth of the Year or speaking to other kids about my experience. I know I can put us on the map and show them that good things come out of Nānākuli. If someone from a small community can achieve something like this, then they can memorize a speech or go through an interview, even though they are nervous. They can stand tall and be confident and think, “If Ladayna can win Youth of the Year and go to college, I can too.”
