THIEF RIVER FALLS IS A

COMMUNITY IN BLOOM.

I

n addition to economic growth, Thief River Falls established a community fund with NMF in an effort to create a culture of philanthropy within their growing town. The Thief River Falls Area Community Fund’s mission is to support charitable, educational and public purpose projects that will enhance or improve the quality of life for residents and/or visitors of the Thief River Falls Area. The fund has already received a number of generous gifts from community members, and the fund committee members are working hard to create partnerships with residents, local business owners, and civic groups to identify where the greatest needs are within Thief River Falls. The public is able to donate online to the Thief River Falls Area Community Fund (TRACF) and download a grant application on NMF’s website (www.nwmf.org).

NMF also recently provided grant funding to Thief River Falls for a downtown revitalization project, and to Northland Community and Technical College for implementing a service learning initiative. The city has been holding public meetings to hear what residents would like to see happen to update the downtown area. Wider sidewalks and additional parking are common suggestions. Mark Borseth, community services director for the City of Thief River Falls, expressed his optimism for the downtown’s future, “Not only do we have DigiKey’s expansion underway, but Arctic Cat is moving jobs back to Thief River Falls from Georgia,” he told us. Arctic Cat is also moving their corporate office from Minneapolis back to Thief River Falls.

enter City Housing Corp. is a champion for homeless individuals with many issues. They own housing units in Duluth, St. Cloud, Rochester, and now Bemidji. They receive income by housing individuals with Section 8 vouchers and through Federal and State housing grant programs. They partnered with many stakeholders in the Bemidji area to complete a homelessness study in Bemidji. The assessment helped define how many housing units were needed. This study also identified how many police calls and emergency room visits were related to homeless individuals, which outlined the existing cost to tax payers and the healthcare system.

Park Place Apartments in Bemidji NMF provided a $20,000 grant for the Park Place Apartments to help hire and train new staff in Bemidji. The funds are matched by Minnesota Department of Human Services LongTerm Homeless grant ($40,000), and Beltrami County (all sources $301,182). A site director, a tenant advocate, and case manager will be hired with NMF grant support. They will also offer staff training prior to opening their doors.

With the inevitable population growth that will come with industry expansion, the city has tried to get ahead of the demand by building additional housing units. They are also currently renovating an old hospital building into new apartments that will overlook the Red Lake River.

The city’s achievements are an example of what great things can be done when communities come together. Industry leaders are investing in the community, and our region, because it has proven to be a value for employees and their families. These stories are a testament to our region’s values.

n June of 2017 The Northwest Minnesota Foundation was proud to help finance a portion of new grocery store that will be constructed in Red Lake, MN. The store is being built to replace the existing grocery and will still be owned and operated by Red Lake Inc. dba Ogaakaaning Enterprises, which is an entity owned 100% by the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.

Established in August 1984, the Trading Post provides a full service grocery store with a deli, smoke shop, laundromat, and fuel sales. In the autumn of 1988, the Ponemah Market opened for operation to provide similar products and a local shopping option for the Ponemah community. When the tribally-owned grocery store was established in Red Lake about 29 years ago, the main purpose was to create jobs.

Today, as the Red Lake Nation grows, the focus includes profitability and sustainability for continued support of the Reservation’s economic and social needs.
