GIVING CIRCLE SPOTLIGHT:
CITIZENS STATE BANK OF ROSEAU
Founded in 1905, Citizens State Bank of Roseau has deep roots in the Roseau community. From providing napkins for church events to advertising in local yearbooks to donating thousands to aid in flood recovery efforts, the bank has a storied history of supporting its Roseau community in a multitude of ways. “We are there, from the little to the big, and everything in between,” said Kelly Kofstad, Human Resources Officer. Citizens State Bank of Roseau this year is among the new inductees into NMF’s Giving Circles. The bank is now included in the Circle of Vision, having achieved the impressive benchmark of $100,000 or more in lifetime giving to NMF or its community and component funds. The bank has donated nearly $130,000 since 1996, when it first donated to the Roseau County Historical Society Endowment Fund. Kelly said the bank aims to donate to causes that benefit the local community. Through NMF, the donations from the bank have benefitted a variety of Roseau-area funds, including LifeCare Health Care Fund, Warroad Early Childhood Initiative Fund, Red River Valley Emerging Leadership Fund, Roseau Area Community Fund – and many more.
“(We) don’t do this for the spotlight or for the recognition,” Kelly said, “but because this is our community.” The bank’s giving extends far beyond funds housed at NMF as well. For its 115-year anniversary in 2020, the bank donated $115 to nonprofits of each of its employees choosing. “We let our employees decide, though we did try to keep it local, to around Roseau,” Kelly said. “Each of our employees represent the bank as much as the Foley family.” The bank is owned by the Foley family and is led by Robert Sr. (known as “Bob”) and Robert Jr. Kelly said the community-minded spirit embodied by the bank comes from the family’s own generous giving and their desire to lift up the community. “They are a very giving family, and we definitely have a family-feel here at the bank,” she said. “If any one of us has a need, they are the first who want to help.” To learn more about the ways to give or to speak to a member of our Philanthropy team, please contact: Dawn Ganje, Director for Community Philanthropy dawng@nwmf.org Ashley Johnson, Senior Development Officer | ashleyj@nwmf.org Kelly Martinka, Development Officer | kellym@nwmf.org

When you give a gift of cash to NMF or one of our funds, your donation helps to Build Better Lives, right here in northwestern Minnesota. Cash is an easy and simple way to give! To make a donation by cash or check, please use the enclosed remittance envelope.
If you are a producer and would like to donate a commodity you raise, NMF can facilitate that gift for you. There is additional tax saving by donating a commodity, including federal, state and selfemployment tax. Contact NMF for more information about gifting a commodity.

MATCHING GIFT
The NMF online giving portal allows donors to give once, or set-up a recurring gift on a weekly, monthly or annual basis. The gift can made via e-check or credit card. Set it and forget it – and make an impactful gift in the region.
Does your employer provide matching gift for donations you make to a charitable organization? If they do, please inform them of your contribution and ask them to “match” your gift. This is a great way of increasing the impact your giving has in the region.

If you have stock or appreciated stock to donate, as a charitable organization NMF is ready and able to receive your gift. Speak with your tax advisor on how a gift of stock may benefit you and your income taxes.
A gift remembering a loved one or honoring a special person in your life is a wonderful way to recognize the impact that person has had on your life or the lives of others. The gift can be in any of the types of gifts we have defined here.

PLANNED GIFT
Put your gift to use today and see the difference your donation can make. You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity – such as NMF – without having to pay income taxes on the money. This gift will satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD), depending on when you turn 70 ½ years of age.
A planned gift can help you leave a legacy for your community. This gift can be a bequest outlined in your will, or a more complicated trust. In any form, this gift leaves a lasting impact. Remember to speak with your tax advisor about the best and most advantageous way for you to donate.
