The Scholarship Committee had their hands full this year when trying to choose four winners from a crop of outstanding candidates, but the field was swept with a slate of women who show great promise. Jordan Woodbury, daughter of Maggie and Wade Woodbury, is a senior at Grants High School. She won the $1,000 John Augustine Memorial scholarship for a student studying agriculture at New Mexico State University. She plans on becoming a vet after years of showing steers and pigs in 4-H while being Jordan Woodbury, winner of the John Augustine involved in rodeo. The Erik L. Ness Ag Communications Scholarship for an Ag Comm major studying at NMSU went to Lauren Schlothauer, daughter of Angie and Clay Schlothauer of Las Cruces. Already a sophomore, Lauren has an active presence on social media with her Dare to Cultivate blog, Instagram, and Facebook pages. “Few people in our society realize that they interact with agriculture on a daily basis and I hope to change that. Agriculturists face many challenges in promoting the industry because of critics of modern animal agricultural practices and biotechnology. Unfortunately, these critics receive a large majority of attention. As an agricultural communicator I have the privilege of telling agriculture’s story and more specifically the story of our farmers and ranchers.”

Kenzee Criswell, Valedictorian of this year’s graduating class at Elida won a $500 scholarship from NMF&LB. The daughter of Waverly and Roy Lee Criswell, she also plans to study ag cont. page 3, see “Scholarships” June/July 2015
