Scholarship Recipients Announced

by Dalene Hodnett, Director of Communications and Media Relations We’ve all seen the statistics about how our nation’s farmers and ranchers are declining in numbers while the world’s population is rising. A common concern is how we will feed 9 billion people by 2050 if, for example, the average age of a New Mexico agriculturist is currently 57. One of the answers is by educating the future about the importance of food production. This year’s New Mexico Farm & Livestock Bureau scholarship recipients are well on their way to being part of the answer. LynnMarie Jarratt, (upper right photo) received the John Augustine Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 and is headed to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to study Biotechnological Engineering. “I believe that pursuing the blending of emerging technologies with biological processes will provide a path to a greater quality of life and security for my community and our society as a whole,” said Jarratt. Raised near Los Lunas on a dairy owned by her mother, Janet Jarratt, a NMF&LB State Board member, LynnMarie writes “Even if I work in a field not directly aiding agriculture, I will always understand and love the principals and ethics instilled in me from my agricultural upbringing. As the third generation on our family farm, I appreciate how much agriculture has evolved, from the horse-drawn plow of my grandfather to the no-till drill and laser services we use today. One of the greatest threats to agriculture today comes from the naivety of people who do not understand farming, where their food comes from ofrthe ancillary benefits to wildlife Cont. on page 4 June/July 2014
