Learn About Mobility Solutions and Earn CEU Credits for Free Advocating Automotive Mobility for your Clients: Driver Rehabilitation and Automotive Mobility Solutions (AAM) Course The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is offering an introductory level online course to provide allied healthcare professionals with an overview of a patient’s automotive mobility challenges, automotive mobility solutions, and the practitioner’s role in advocacy and referral. By learning about automotive vehicle modifications, healthcare professionals will be able to suggest options for caregivers or persons who want to drive or be transported, but need accommodations. Topics covered include learning about the importance of Automobility and Related Services, Driving as an Instrumental ADL, Diagnosis, Assessment, and five actual Client Case Studies. AROUND THE INDUSTRY Artificial Intelligence in the Auto Industry AI is making its way to the Auto Industry to improve marketing, vehicle design, and product life cycle. According to NVIADA and an article published by Danny Shapiro, “Beyond the automotive product lifecycle, generative AI is also enabling new breakthroughs in autonomous vehicle (AV) development. Such research areas include the use of neural radiance field (NeRF) technology to turn recorded sensor data into fully interactive 3D simulations.” (Shapiro, 2023). AI will soon play a huge role in our industry.

Technician Shortage Effects on Electric Vehicles Electric vehicles are on the rise and with that comes a need to fix them. According to REUTERS, “ A global shortage of technicians and independent repair shops qualified to fix electric vehicles (EV) threatens to increase repair and warranty costs for drivers, potentially undermining upcoming deadlines to cut vehicle carbon emissions. From Milan to Melbourne to Malibu, technician training organizations, warranty providers and repairers say that independent repair shops will be vital for making EVs affordable because they are far cheaper than franchise dealers.” (Carey, Lienert & Piovaccari, 2023)
NMEDA On The Road: 2023 PVA Healthcare Summit NMEDA was in Orlando earlier this year at the 11th Annual Paralyzed Veterans of America Healthcare Summit + Expo. The intensive three-day learning experience and product expo attracted a record number of clinicians specializing in the treatment of SCI/D, MS, and ALS. With various seating solutions and a vehicle from local QAP dealer United Access on display, we attracted the attention of VA healthcare professionals specializing in critical care, rehabilitation, and assistive technology. NMEDA’s Amy Schoppman and Trevor Jennings were on hand to educate attendees about QAP and the automotive mobility solutions that are possible through collaboration with NMEDA members, and our new(-ish) CEO Toby Cummings made his official PVA debut delivering remarks at an intimate NMEDA-sponsored VIP reception attended by PVA’s Board of Directors, high-level staff, and various VA personnel.

Have you heard about the “new guy”? NMEDA recently underwent a shift in leadership as Danny Langfield assumed a new role as the Executive Director of the Auto Mobility Research & Education Foundation (AMREF). This change left an open seat at NMEDA’s table, which was filled by Toby Cummings in July. Since Toby’s arrival, he has proven to be exceptionally active and committed to his role as NMEDA’s new CEO. His leadership has already begun to make waves within the organization. Some of you had the fortunate opportunity to meet and engage with Toby during the industry roundtables, in the expo, or even in the hotel lobby in Kansas City. However, if you didn’t have the chance to attend the Annual Conference, don’t worry. You can continue reading to delve deeper into the story of NMEDA’s latest addition.
What was your first car? My first car holds a special place in my memories, as it was a distinctive baby blue Chevy Luv pickup with a manual transmission. This particular vehicle marked the beginning of my journey into the world of automobiles and personal mobility.
What has been your most significant learning experience since assuming the NMEDA CEO role? Significant? Reflecting on my initial 90 days as the CEO I am going to attribute the Dealers Open Forum meeting at the annual NMEDA conference as the most significant experience. The Dealers Open Forum meeting served as a unique platform for me to connect with key stakeholders, industry experts, and passionate members of the NMEDA community.
