It is well used in many different art forms: fine art, movies, TV shows, theatre, and anime. One of the many anime that use flower symbolism is Ouran High School Host Club.

Ouran High School Host Club, or OHSHC, focuses on Haruhi Fujioka, an honor student who attends the elite Ouran Academy. While looking for a quiet place to study, she wanders into what she thinks is an empty music room. What she actually wandered into was a host club3 , 4 and is flabbergasted when she realizes it. While trying to leave, she accidentally knocks over a vase worth 8 million yen5 . To make up the debt, she has to work as a host herself. Due to her androgynous appearance, most of the club thinks she’s a boy. By the end of Episode 1, all of the hosts realize she’s a girl. That is the beginning of wonderful friendships and hilarious plans to keep the rest of the school from finding out her gender. It is one of the most loved romantic comedy shows in anime. The host club consists of seven characters, all unique with different personalities. All of the characters are represented by a colored rose. Roses also show up in the opening credits, and the theme song “Sakura Kiss” mentions roses in the line, “If I had to choose a rose / in this garden of romance / maybe we could take this chance / maybe you’re my love.” The rose in the line embodies the love the hosts have for the main character.

Dark blue roses represent unrequited love, loyalty, and mystery6 , 7. This rose exemplifies the tall, mysterious Takashi “Mori” Morinozuka. Many of the moments that show his rose’s meanings are his loyalties to the Haninozuka family which the Morinozukas served until the families merged. This rose perfectly represents the sweet little Mitsukuni Haninozuka or Honey. One of the many ways he expresses his rose’s symbolism is by his endless smile and happy demeanor. Honey’s femininity is shown through his love for cake and stuffed animals and his rejection of gender roles.

One way we can interpret grace is how well he fights; his swift yet calculated movements almost guarantee a win for him. The sweetness can be interpreted in two ways: his love for sweets or his general attitude towards people. His kindness can be attributed to his future wife, Reiko Kanazuki, and how he helped her up after she tripped on his beloved stuffed bunny. The joy and happiness can represent his love for the host club and his friends who are a part of it.

Orange roses represent desire, fascination, admiration, and strength15. This rose embodies the more mature brother of the Hitachiin twins, Kaoru Hitachiin. While more mild-mannered than his brother, Kaoru usually goes along with Hikaru’s schemes. Kaoru admires Hikaru but also wishes they could expand their little world16 and not depend on each other as much. Before Tamaki befriended the twins, they were anti-social and self-centered but longing for someone to tell them apart. While slowly opening up to Tamaki and others, they became more sociable and less dependent on each other. Kaoru admires how easily some people accept others, as they were betrayed by a maid they trusted. It also shows strength to try and open up after a betrayal such as that.

Light blue roses represent unrequited love as well as sensitivity and feeling17 18.This rose exemplifies the more hot-headed twin, Hikaru Hitachiin. Hikaru has a hard time hiding his emotions. While in Karuizawa, Haruhi runs into a friend from middle school and Hikaru treats him poorly. He also becomes emotional during Episode 21 when he is separated from Karou due to the Black Magic club meddling in the Test of Courage Tournament. His unrequited love is about his crush on Haruhi. The reason for the crush may have been Haruhi’s ability to distinguish Kaoru and him apart from each other19. He eventually confesses his love20 to Haruhi and is rejected by her21. Even after he is rejected by Haruhi, he invites her to visit the New Year’s Shrine22 to let her know they’ll still be friends.
