The occasion very rare, my hair on the back of my neck prickled in the air.

My skin so fair, I should take c a r e but, secretly I enjoy the dare of my body b a r e .

I know that life is hard. But I never knew it was so complex. As a calm silver pool it beckons to me; the rays of sunshine glistening on its mirror surface reflecting fairytale endings I believe will come true. Now, I am old enough to swim. I dive in, with only a vague idea of its depth. I am thrown into a current where I must choose the pace of my watery dance. Whirling in a frenzy of black and white, my heart burns for the touch of color.

But the incessant motion with the jest of my step merely blurs my flooded eyes with shades of gray. I weave and turn in the silver spiral until a chill frost gathers upon my lips. My heart stands still, as my feet continue to tease the silty marble floor. I see many faces smiling, smiling, always smiling with no laugh. I smile too. Our faces are different, but our eyes bear the same dark shadows. A slow tear begins, ripping down the length of my face, behind the mask which has molded to my skin. I am tired of the jest.

I want to stop the motion. I feel heat on my face as the color red escapes the edges of my bleached smile, to drip down to my blackened feet. I look to unmasked faces and see clear eyes glistening with the same reflection that danced across the water’s surface.

My eyes are still dark.

I need the one without the mask. Ripping the plastic smile from my face, I thrust myself back to the surface and throw myself under the sky. The frenzy of the pool continues, but I now see that its color is shrouded by a gray mist. I turn my back on it, feeling its piercing chill scratch at my back.

It passes over me. Like a clammy wisp of smoke drifting away on the wind, it is gone. My head is lifted.

I look into the mirror surface.

The sun reflects its brightness into my eyes.

I reach to wipe the blood from my face, and find it is no longer torn. The mask lies on the green grass at my feet. I step over it.

There is an orange leaf in my hair. My feet are light. I wade back into the pool to rejoin the frenzy with a dance.

There are no fairytale endings here, because the unmasked savior, the dark phantoms, and the triumphant joys are real.

This is a poem that discusses how my life would be different if I were able to maintain a secret idenity, but it suggests that I am currently under the influence of an idenitiy that is mine only in name, causing a secret idenity to be liberating, allowing me to reveal my true self.

My secret is I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me, having an affair. Its the usual signs... phone rings but if i answer the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when i ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.”

I always stay awake to look out for her coming home, but she always walks up to the house from down the street, obviously getting dropped off away from the house for a reason.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down secretly I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really try to check on how she’s getting home. I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson motor cycle next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home to see who is bringing her home. It was at that very moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil. The real Question is: I wonder if this something I can fix myself or should i take it back to the Harley - Davidson dealership?

Being social creatures, we give in to the requests of our peers and the spur-of-themoment desires. On occasion, the results, upon later reflection, may not be what was expected, but the fruits are no less valuable. My secret isn’t just a personal secret, it’s a secret place where my climbing friends and I go once a year. I can’t tell you where it is or they’d kill me, nor is it for everyone, but it is absolute paradise for a seasoned climber.
