Thanksgiving Dinner

A FORT DODGE FORD TOYOTA TRADITION

As Thanksgiving approached more than a decade ago, the Johnson family got an idea: why not use the dealership as a place for a special community Thanksgiving meal?

The first such meal was served in 2009. The vehicles came out of the showroom. Tables, chairs and a whole lot of turkey went into the showroom.

That first dinner became an annual event. Since that first dinner, more than 15,000 individual meals have been served.

Those meals have been prepared by the culinary arts students at Iowa Central Community College. The Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota Thanksgiving meal is the single largest project the culinary arts students do every year.

``We think there’s a need on Thanksgiving day to make the day special,’’ said Casey Johnson, co-owner of the dealership.

The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the dinner from being held in 2020, but the Johnsons and the dealership’s staff plan to restart the tradition.

Meals on Wheels

A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN FORT DODGE FORD LINCOLN TOYOTA AND THE UNITED WAY OF GREATER FORT DODGE

DELIVERS HOT LUNCHES TO SENIOR CITIZENS

The Meals On Wheels program that delivers hot lunches to senior citizens in Fort Dodge is a part nership between Ford Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota and United Way.

Deb Johnson, co-owner of the dealership, was on the board of the Fort Dodge Community Foun dation and United Way of Great er Fort Dodge when Meals On Wheels was restarted in March 2017. Her interest in the program was a key factor in the dealership assuming the management of it about two years ago.

Barb Michaels manages the program. The meals are delivered by volunteers.

The meals are delivered Monday through Friday at lunch time.

The program provides about 60 meals each weekday. About 11,000 meals were delivered in 2020. No government funding is used to support the program. Donations and fundraisers pay the

This initiative started 15 years ago. Since then it has provided 140 cars to families that needed one.``It was a natural for us,’’ said Casey Johnson, co-owner of the dealership. ``The outcomes are very emotional and great success stories.’’

Collision damage and other kinds of auto body problems can be fixed at the ABRA Body Shop that is affiliated with Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota.

The shop is one of about 200 ABRA franchises in the United States. Dealership co-owner Casey Johnson said the shop works seamlessly with all insurance providers.

Adding the auto body repair capability made Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota a true full service dealership, he said.

The ABRA Body Shop opened about 10 years ago.

The Quick Lane Center at Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota provides more than just oil changes.

When changing a vehicle’s oil, staff members do a safety inspection and check to see if there are any open recall notices for that particular vehicle. ``People really can’t get that at a typical oil change center,’’ said Casey Johnson, co-owner of the dealership.

He said the center conducts more than 20,000 oil changes a year. The center serves all makes, models and years of vehicles, he added. ``The entire premise of it was quick and convenient,’’ Johnson said.

An Award Winning Dealership

FORD DODGE FORD LINCOLN TOYOTA HAS RECEIVED AN IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF AWARDS OVER THE YEARS.

Ford Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota has received an impressive number of awards over the years.

In 2004, it received the Salute to Dealers Award, the highest honor Ford Motor Co. presents each year. Casey and Deb Johnson were the first husband and wife team to receive the honor. It was presented to them by Edsel B. Ford II , the great- grandson of Henry Ford.

The Salute to Dealers Award recognized them for their outstanding commitment to the community. The Johnsons were one of nine dealers worldwide to receive the award that year. Casey Johnson described receiving that honor as ``very humbling.’’

In 2008, Casey Johnson was named the Time Magazine Dealer of the Year for Iowa. That honor also recognized the work Johnson has done to help the Fort Dodge community.

The dealership has also received nine President’s Awards from Ford and Toyota. Those awards recognize the highest measure of customer satisfaction, market share and employee training, among other things.

In 2017, Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota was the only dealership receiving President’s Awards from both Ford and Toyota in the state of Iowa.

THE JOHNSON FAMILY LOOKED FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND.

After experiencing strong growth at Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota from 1996 to 2012, the Johnson family looked for an opportunity to expand.

In November 2012, Ames Ford Lincoln was purchased. ``You have to have a great track record with a franchise to be able to buy another franchise,’’ said Casey John son, co-owner of the dealership.

A new showroom and service center was built in Ames. The family also owns Nevada Automotive, a large service center and used car dealership in Story County.

When Steve powell started his career in the auto industry 29 years ago, hybrids and advanced technologies weren’t offered. The longevity of today’s cars and trucks is impressive. “It used to be that a vehicle was about done when it reached 100,000 miles, “ Kinseth said. “Now it’s just getting started, as long as the proper maintenance has been followed.”
