Trauma & Critical Care Surgery
Division of Trauma & Critical Care
Clinical
The Division of Trauma, General Emergency Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care was key in the Department of Surgery's COVID response. The service demonstrated great flexibility to respond to the pandemic by remodeling the service and then rebounding during reactivation. Division faculty are active in community and state policy initiatives to decrease violent crime in the Chicago area, which continues to rise, and focus on these initiatives is critical.
Research
Dr. Schwulst has continued scientific achievement and received an R01 Research Project grant this year. Dr. Anne Stey submitted an application for a K-grant titled “Timeliness of Management of Trauma Related
Hemorrhage and Trauma Related Coagulopathy.”
Education
Our faculty have increased their leadership roles within the Department of Surgery’s Residency Program –
Dr. Joseph Posluszny was named Clerkship Director and Dr. Nabil Issa continues as Clerkship Sub-I Director. We matched two new fellows this year. Drs. Issa and Shapiro won teaching awards.
