Jacob Bonta has 8 years of experience in designing and testing new chemical products for various industrial sectors. Hired by Valvoline in 2018, he leads lubricating grease research and development in North America and supports grease related operations for Valvoline globally. He has a B.S. Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University and is working on his Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Kentucky with an expected graduation date of 2024. His graduate research is focused on lubricating grease fundamental material properties. He has multiple patents issued or pending for chemical products with three being specific to lubricating greases. He is a member of SAE, STLE, and NLGI and holds the NLGI CLGS certification.

The Author Award for Development is presented for the best paper presented at our Annual Meeting that focuses on formulation, development, and manufacture of finished greases. Sven Meinhardt is the Global Technology Advisor for ExxonMobil Chemical’s Synthetics business. As a Phd Chemist, he has worked with the chemical and lubricants industry in different areas for more than 24 years. As a native of Essen, Germany, he studied Chemistry at the University of Dortmund with a focus on Organic Chemistry before joining Mobil Schmierstoff GmbH in Hamburg as Sales Representative for industrial lubricants. Following the Exxon-Mobil merger he was hired by ExxonMobil Chemical in 2003 and worked in various commercial functions before joining the Synthetics Business Unit as Business Development Manager in 2010. Since 2016 Sven has been working in the Performance Liquids Technology department. In his current assignment he builds on his extensive technical knowledge in lubricant applications and advises customers on the use of synthetic basestocks for the development of nextgeneration lubricants that can meet the continuously increasing performance requirements.

Clarence E. Earle Memorial Award: Johan Leckner, PhD. Sponsored by The Unami Group

This award is presented to an individual for outstanding contribution to the technical literature relating to lubricating greases during the year. Johan Leckner has an MS and PhD in chemical engineering from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He worked for six years as a researcher, first at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and then at Chalmers University of Technology. In 2009 he joined Axel Christiernsson International as Senior Development engineer and since 2016 he has been working as Group Technical Manager. In 2021, Johan was appointed as part-time Professor in Lubricant Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where runs research projects with a focus of understanding friction losses in grease lubricated mechanical components.

Ashlie Martini is currently a Professor and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of California Merced. She has written over 200 technical journal articles and recently published the first undergraduate level textbook on tribology called Introduction to Tribology for Engineers. She is a Fellow of the ASME and the STLE and has received numerous awards for research as well as for teaching and service. Professor Martini is an Editor of the journal Tribology Letters and an Associate Editor for the journal Tribology Transactions. She has also been on the Board of Directors of the STLE and the Chair of international conferences, including the Gordon Research Conference on Tribology and the STLE Tribology Frontiers Conference.

The award for Educational Excellence is presented for outstanding instruction as exemplified by subject knowledge and presentation skills in NLGI education courses. Erik Willett has served as the instructor for the ‘Polymers in Grease’ section of the NLGI Advanced Grease Training Course since 2018. He combines a passion for fundamental material science with the everyday practical needs of formulators. Erik has a doctoral degree in Polymer Science from the University of Akron and a Bachelor’s in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut. He has previously won the NLGI Development Author Award and PCC Gonsalves Award. Erik has recently become the new president of Functional Products, Inc., an Ohio-based lubricant additive company. He seeks to further the industry through innovation solutions to customer problems using polymer technology.

Tyler Jark has enjoyed working in the lubricants industry for 20 years and is Vice President of Sales West Coast Operations at AOCUSA. He is a Southern California native with a broad knowledge and appreciation of the lubrication industry as reflected by his early beginnings as a classic car enthusiast to his time invested in becoming a CLGS (Certified Lubricating Grease Specialist). He earned both his BS in Business Marketing and MBA degrees at California State University, Long Beach and is proud to serve as a NLGI Board Member. He enjoys spending time with his wife Rachel and daughter Johannah, going to church and working on his 1967 GTO.

Lawrence (Larry) Ludwig Jr. is the Chief Chemist/Technical Director for Schaeffer Mfg. in St. Louis, Missouri. He has been employed for 45 years with Schaeffer Mfg. Larry graduated from St. Louis University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He holds the coveted Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS) certification, certified Oil Maintenance Analyst –Level 1 certification (OMA), and Certified Metalworking Fluid Specialist (CMFS) certification. Larry is a member of NLGI’s Research Grant Reviewer Subcommittee and the current Co-Chairman of NLGI/ELGI’s Food Grade Lubricants and Biobased Lubricants Working Groups. Larry is married to his wife Kathy. His hobbies and interests include traveling, reading, history, hiking, football, college basketball, soccer, ST. Louis Blue’s Hockey, baseball especially St. Louis Cardinals baseball, track and field, swimming, PLAY VIDEO trivia, photography, and music.

This award acknowledges valuable work within the Institute in the technical development of greases, grease tests, or the promotion of grease usage. Wayne Mackwood is currently the Global Head of Detergent and Grease Technology for LANXESS, leading a highly skilled, dynamic and dedicated team of chemists at its West Hill, Canada Application Technology Centre. He is an expert in the design, manufacture and use of Calcium Sulfonate Complex Grease and has developed over 150 grease formulations for use in a broad range of applications. Wayne has spent the majority of his 30 year career as a Scientist but has also held roles in marketing and asset management. He has authored more than a dozen technical papers, contributed to numerous journal articles, holds two patents, and has given more than 20 presentations at leading conferences and seminars around the world. He has a Masters in Materials Engineering Science, with a focus on Tribology, from the University of Western Ontario. Wayne has been a member of the NLGI Board since 2011 and is currently serving on the Executive Committee as Vice President. He been awarded the NLGI John A. Bellanti Sr. Memorial Award in 2019, the NLGI Golden Grease Gun in 2021, and the NLGI Award for Educational Excellence in 2022.

Sudhir Sachdeva is the Chairman of Siddharth Grease and Lubes Pvt Ltd India and Trinity Lubricants and Grease FZC in Dubai. Since 1988, his journey from a modest beginning to leading a multi-national company is a testimony to his relentless efforts and unwavering commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and social responsibility. Mr. Sachdeva’s integrity, hard work, and visionary attitude have earned him respect and admiration from all quarters. He is considered a father figure in the Grease fraternity in India. Moreover, Mr. Sachdeva cares about the environment and is leading the change towards a better environment within and outside the company. He has a huge focus on sustainability and has a clear policy for Carbon Net Zero by 2045, and he has implemented various initiatives such as solar power generation, total conversion to PNG, rainwater harvesting wells, and an ETP for sewage treatment etc. Mr. Sachdeva’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and giving back to society also serves as a reminder that success is not just about profits and growth, but also about making a positive impact on the world around us. He was awarded the “LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD” by the NLGI – India Chapter in 2020.

Chemistry in 1974 from Central Methodist College, and his M.S. in Physical Chemistry in 1977 from Purdue University. For the 46 years since then, Andy has been a professional research chemist. Earle Memorial Award, the NLGI Fellows Award, the NLGI Author Award for Application, the NLGI Author Award for Development, and the NLGI Golden Grease Gun Award. Andy was a contributing author of the NLGI Lubricating Grease Guide, 7th Edition. Andy retired from full-time work on October 1, 2022. In December 2022, Andy assumed the responsibilities of Technical Editor for the NLGI Spokesman.

Bill Tuszynski

is a partner at The Unami Group, serving as a sales agent for three companies, and providing market development and market research consulting to clients. He started at Pennwalt Corp. (now part of Arkema) before moving to Inolex where he managed the Industrial Division. In 2005, with two partners, he purchased Ivanhoe Industries, a chemical distributor. He retired from Ivanhoe in 2016, forming The Unami Group, remaining as an agent for Ivanhoe, now part of Van Horn Metz. Tuszynski is a member of NLGI, STLE, ACS, AIChE, and AAAS. He is active in the STLE Philadelphia Section and received NLGI’s Clarence E. Earle Memorial Award in 2015 and 2022, serving as editor and co-editor for the NLGI Lubricating Grease Guide. He volunteers at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia. He holds a BS in Biochemistry from Manhattan College and a PhD in Chemistry from Cornell University.

Dr. Erik Willett is president of Functional

Products, Inc. which is a lubricant and grease additive company out of Macedonia, Ohio. In his previous role as VP of Technology, Erik supported Functional’s core strengths in polymer-based additives and customer-driven innovative solutions. Erik has a doctoral degree in Polymer Science from the University of Akron and a Bachelor’s in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut. He has won the NLGI Development Author Award and PCC Gonsalves Award, and serves the community as a technical reviewer for both NLGI Spokesman and TLT magazine. In his new role, Erik seeks to expand his company’s problem solving approach to fundamental challenges emerging in the industry.
